Exclusive: Participant has boarded Abacus, the drama that Justin Lin will direct based on a script by Kenneth Lin and James Schamus. Participant joins as financier, and producer alongside Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment. Lin is producing with Ernesto Foronda and Elizabeth Urwin for Perfect Storm. Also producing is Mark Mitten. Exec producing are Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren, along with Steve James, who helmed the Oscar-nominated 2016 documentary on which the film is based.
Perfect Storm Entertainment acquired the rights to the James-directed docu Abacus: Small Enough to Jail in 2017, after the film had a breakout premiere at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival. James separately directed the docuseries America to Me and City So Real for Participant, so the fit is good here.

“A Kid Like Jake” director Silas Howard will direct an Lgbtq-focused horror film “Moonshadow” for Gunpowder & Sky, the content studio announced Monday.
Gunpower & Sky will partner with Yomyomf and Nonetheless Productions to develop the film. Ernesto Foronda (“Better Luck Tomorrow”) and Daniel Foerster wrote the screenplay for “Moonshadow,” which was inspired by Daniel Foerster’s own experience with Lgbtq conversation therapy. The film will chronicle a transgender teen who is sent to a science-based conversation camp, where he quickly learns the youth are being transformed into something non-human.
“With a battle over transgender rights playing out on the national stage, and as a member and advocate of the trans community, I feel it is critical to be a part of the conversation,” said Howard. “The current generation of young people is living with entirely new expectations about gender and sexuality, and ‘Moonshadow’ is for them.”

Jim Parsons gay? Well, as per the New York Times, yes, the Big Bang Theory actor "is gay and in a 10-year relationship." No more details are given out. No explanations as to why the Times made a point of outing Parsons, who says nothing about his private life or sexual orientation during an interview focusing on a Broadway revival of Harvey in which Parsons stars in the old James Stewart movie role of the, huh, eccentric bachelor whose pal is a big rabbit (Harvey) that only he can see. In addition to his stage work, the Houston-born, 39-year-old Parsons has been seen in movies and on television since 2002. His TV breakthrough was, of course, The Big Bang Theory, which has earned him two Emmys and a Golden Globe. On the big screen, Jim Parsons hasn’t made much of a mark yet, as he has almost invariably been cast in minor supporting roles.

"Sunset Stories" directors Silas Howard and Ernesto Foronda have an interesting take on filmmaking: "All film production feels like painting a picture on the railroad tracks with a train barreling down on you," says Howard. "You can paint up until the last minute pulling it off the tracks before the train smashes into your work." Looks like they pulled off the tracks in time, as "Sunset Stories" will be screening at this year's SXSW Film Festival. What It's About: It’s about an Ocd nurse who runs into her past while on route to pick up an organ transplant and the 24-hour journey she goes on to find all that she lost. The Directors Say: "In 'Sunset Stories,' May blames magical thinking (which is often linked to Ocd behavior a way of trying to control one’s life) as the reason she runs into the one person she left 5 years prior.

The biggest chunk of the line-up has been announced today, which has some great premieres including 21 Jump Street, Tiff and Sundance hit The Raid, Will Ferrell‘s Casa de mi Padre, the documentary Girl Model (which we liked at Tiff), as well as the next from Broken Lizard, The Babymakers. One of the highlights is the unbelievably smart and hilarious 21 Jump Street, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Both of those are World Premieres. Other highlights include The Hunter, Killer Joe, The Babymakers, frankie goes boom, God Bless America, The Imposter, The Raid, Bernie and Casa de mi Padre just to name a few. After the jump, read descriptions of all the films that have been announced so far. Before I copy and paste the rest of the list, a few minor notes.

Last week while Bloody Disgusting was on the Los Angeles set of Takashi Shimizu's new film, 7500, we had a chance to speak with Roy Lee about that film as well as a few upcoming projects. While I can't say too much about 7500 right now, Mr. Lee was able to clue us in on a progress report in regard to Spike Lee's Oldboy remake. Things are gearing up fast, We are planning to shoot Oldboy in March, and we should start preproduction in late January. On if they had retained anything from the draft by Better Luck Tomorrow writers Ernesto Foronda, Fabian Marquez and Justin Lin, No. This is completely separate. A brand new script by Mark Protosevich. ...

The Weinstein Co. has pre-emptively bought Kung Fu High School, a novel by Ryan Gattis. Neal Edelstein and Mike Macari are producing under their Macari/Edelstein banner, and Ernesto Foronda will write the screenplay. Sources said Bob and Harvey Weinstein aggressively beat out rival bidders in the rich deal, which will net the novelist a seven-figure payday, while the screenwriter will receive $800,000 if the movie is made. The project comes with a progress to production with reversion clause, so if cameras are not rolling in one year, the rights revert back to the producers.

Writer-director Justin Lin -- whose feature "Better Luck Tomorrow" made a controversial splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival -- has signed to make "The Tenth Justice" his follow-up project for Fox 2000. The deal, nearing completion, will see Lin develop the project with his writing partners Ernesto Foronda and Fabian Marquez. The project is adapted from the New York Times best-selling novel by Brad Meltzer, centering on Yale Law School graduate Ben Addison, who gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving the Supreme Court following the revelation of a verdict. The Fox 2000 project will follow the same story line, but the protagonist has been changed to a female lead.
