Dolls, dolls, and more dolls! The horror genre is an ever-twisting blade that goes in deep when a good, and original concept is copied, replicated, and beaten over the head until it’s nothing more than a watered-down caricature. They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but are we so sure about that? Today I have an interesting Horror Movie Rip-off between two evil entities covered in rubber that cherish their higher gods and massacring anyone and everyone in their path. One that spawned countless sequels, tv shows, a cemented horror legacy, and worldwide notoriety, while the other I may have glanced at on the racks of my local blockbuster back in the day.

Ed Gale, the actor who played Chucky in the 1988 horror film Child’s Play, admitted to having sexually explicit online conversations with a boy he thought was 14 when he was caught in a sting operation by the child advocacy group Creep Catchers Unit.
The Southern California-based group, which enlists adults to pose as minors to coordinate meetings with potential predators, confronted Gale at his Hollywood apartment, local reports say. The 59-year-old actor admitted to soliciting child pornography from the supposed child with the intention of “hooking up.” By his own estimations, Gale said he may have spoken with 10 other underage victims.
According to local reports, two LAPD detectives entered Gale’s apartment during the Creep Catchers sting. The group stated that the detectives confiscated electronic devices from the actor, but he wasn’t taken into custody.
Gale later played Chucky as the in-suit performer in 1990’s Child’s Play 2 and 1988’s Bride of Chucky.

It’s hard to believe now, but just a few decades ago, Marvel movies did not dominate cinemas. In fact, the very first big-screen adaptation of a Marvel property is one of cinema’s best-known flops, 1986’s Howard the Duck. Based on the satirical character created by Steve Gerber, Howard the Duck baffled audiences with its surprising amount of duck nudity and off-key jokes. Not even the intervention of executive producer George Lucas, who planned to make a Howard the Duck before even starting Star Wars.
Obviously, Marvel and Lucasfilm have both recovered from the experience. The same is true for stars Tim Robbins and Lea Thompson, although it took a lot longer to bounce back. In a recent interview with the podcast Celebrity Catchup: Life After That Thing I Did, Thompson called the response to the movie “devastating.” It even overwhelmed Thompson’s breakout as Lorraine Baines in Back to the Future.

On this date, 35 years ago, the world was changed forever.

Oh wait, just kidding. It took a few more decades, and some much better movies, until the MCU engulfed the industry.
One of the craziest non-blockbusters ever produced, Howard The Duck was optioned and developed with mega-franchise aspirations. Howard The Duck is a film so uncomfortably weird that, even now, it must be seen to be believed, though I’ll do my best to discuss its relative non-charms here.

May’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as we have a ton of great titles hitting Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD, so I hope genre fans have their wallets ready for all the killer selections coming out this week. If you happened to miss it in theaters, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man is heading to various formats on Tuesday, and if you’re a fan of Japanese filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto, you’ll definitely want to pick up Arrow Video’s Solid Metal Nightmares Collector Set.
Arrow is also keeping busy with two other titles this week – Lucky McKee’s The Woman, Blood Tide (1982) – and Blue Underground is bringing to cult classics to the world of 4K finally with their new releases of Maniac and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. And as if all of that wasn’t enough, Vinegar Syndrome is resurrecting both Dolly Dearest and Pale Blood this week,...

I know a lot of you are excited about Avengers: Infinity War, so while we wait for it to be released, which seems like a lifetime away, we have a great retro mashup trailer for you to watch! It comes from Darth Blender and it features a mashup of footage from several classic superhero films that were made in the 80s and 90s. I'm sure you'll remember some of these if you were up to speed with what Marvel was doing during this era. Below the video, you'll find a list of all the films that were used and all the characters that the actors are meant to play.
I love that Chuck Norris in The Punisher! It also features Burt Reynolds as Iron Man, David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Winter Soldier, Dennis Quaid as Star-Lord, Eddie Murphy as Falcon and more!

Looking back on it now, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why Tom Holland’s 1988 movie Child’s Play should have worked. While it’s not the first “killer doll” story ever produced—audiences had already seen the “Talky Tina” Twilight Zone episode, Anthony Hopkins in Magic, and even Stuart Gordon’s Dolls—it is dependent on a premise so potentially silly that its success was unlikely, particularly for a mainstream studio horror film. That it is very good in addition to being financially successful—subsequently inspiring another five sequels—is some kind of magic trick.
Like a lot of high-concept horror of the ’80s, Child’s Play navigates a difficult path by having a knowing sense of humor about itself while still playing the material straight. Yes, some of this stuff may seem silly, so Holland has several of the characters acknowledge that fact and sometimes embraces...

Child's Play Collector's Edition Blu-ray: "The "chills come thick and fast" (Los Angeles Times) in this riveting, jolt-a-minute thriller about an innocent-looking doll inhabited by the soul of a serial killer who refused to die. From the director of Fright Night, Child's Play comes complete with "excellent special effects" (Leonard Maltin) and a slew of special features that make this Blu-ray your "friend to the end!"
In this "clever, playful thriller" (The New York Times), only six-year-old Andy realizes that Chucky is responsible for a spate of gruesome murders, including that of his unsuspecting babysitter. Tom Holland’s Child’s Play, the best killer doll movie not produced by Charles Band, is getting the special-edition treatment from Scream Factory, in the form of a two-disc set being released next week. The A.V. Club has been granted an exclusive clip featuring an interview with Ed Gale, who portrayed the murderous Good Guy doll in select scenes throughout the film:
Making Chucky believable was a team effort; if audiences weren’t scared of a homicidal “My Buddy” surrogate, the entire film would collapse. Credited as “Chucky Stunt Double,” Gale portrayed Chucky whenever director Tom Holland needed the doll to move without wires through the use of oversized sets. But, in the clip, Gale explains that while he did play Chucky, several puppeteers, the writers, and the voiceover work of Brad Dourif also brought life to the horror icon. The doll sequences in Child’s Play are...

This has been a big week for Chucky fans! Earlier this week, we got not only a Blu-Ray box set collecting all of the 'Child's Play' films, but a brand new 'Child's Play' sequel 'Curse Of Chucky' written & directed by Don Mancini. And so, we've just been given this bizarre 25 years of Chucky tribute video. I say bizarre because it's a "megamix" by Mike Relm. You'll either find this "mix" terribly annoying, or maybe you'll find it charming and awesome. I fall somewhere in the middle as I've always found anything Chucky related irresistible. Have a peek below!
Also, can't get enough Chucky? Read our review of 'Curse Of Chucky' by Scott Weinberg, our interviews with series creator Don Mancini, as well as Ed Gale, the man in the Chucky suit. John Squires also whipped up this great piece showcasing the best Chucky toys on the market!

There’s never been a better time to look back on the Child’s Play franchise than this week, which sees the long awaited release of the sixth installment in the series; Curse of Chucky. Today, we shine the spotlight on one of the unsung heroes of the franchise; an actor by the name of Ed Gale, who actually played Chucky in the three most beloved installments. In fact, he’s the only actor to date who has physically portrayed the pint-sized terror.
Though it’s mostly Brad Dourif and special effects artist Kevin Yagher who are credited with bringing Chucky to life, the character never would’ve been able to move around on screen if it weren’t for Ed Gale. Inside the Chucky costume in Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2 and Bride of Chucky, Gale is essentially to the franchise what Kane Hodder is to the Friday the 13th...

Welcome to Issue 12 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: What we can learn by defining Howard The Duck.
Pardon me, but I’ve been re-watching Howard The Duck. The 1986 live-action creature-feature “sci-fi/comedy,” PG-rated zoophilia and notorious flop.
It’s not a good movie. It’s an enjoyable movie, but not because of what is on screen…okay, scratch-that. It has the most physically attractive appearence of Lea Thompson on film and this time, she’s not the mother of our main character, so you can totally lust after her up until the end where it seems like she’s actually going to have sex with this duck.
Ducks, who – by the way – are basically rapists across the board. But that’s neither here nor there.

I finally got to attend a Famous Monsters Convention! I.ve been a huge fan of the magazine since I bought my first issue when I was 8 years old in 1969 at Wood Drug Store at the corner of Taylor and Manchester in Kirkwood. It was issue #64 with Basil Gogo.s painting of Vincent Price from House Of Wax on the cover and from then on, I lived for the magazine, buying all subsequent issues and eventually tracking the earlier ones until I acquired a complete run. In 1973 the first Famous Monsters Convention was held but I was too young to attend. The magazine, run by legendary editor Forry Ackerman, ended its original run in 1983 after 191 issues. Famous Monsters returned to newsstands (sans Forry) in a couple of brief incarnations (including an on-line form) over the next couple of decades and another Famous Monsters Convention was held in 1993 (I wish I...
