Do you remember when you first saw the trailer for "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens"? Whatever you thought of the film, the moment when Han Solo (Harrison Ford) returns to the Millennium Falcon after all these years was powerful for fans. If the line, "Chewie, we're home" didn't make you tear up as a "Star Wars" fan, your heart is made of stone. Back in 2017, Ford told Star Wars Insider (via ComicBook.com), "I spent a lot of years [in the ship], so it was fun to see again. I didn't remember it as well as I thought I did." However, there was one thing that Ford did remember about the Millennium Falcon through the original trilogy -- that it was falling apart.
That ship, of course, has been referred to in the films with a few disparaging remarks including being called a "bucket of bolts" by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher...

When “Haunted Mansion” production designer Darren Gilford was working with director Justin Simien to bring the beloved Disney ride back to the big screen, he had a rather unique perspective. As a former Imagineering intern, Gilford had learned first-hand how the Disneyland attractions were conceived.
Gilford’s design entry point for the film was a bible devoted to the ride from Imagineering. “I got to know what was canon for Disney,” he says. “We really tried to be as true as we could to the original Haunted Mansion from Disneyland. It was going to be heavily based on all the icons from the ride.”
The film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Hadish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson as the crew who try to rid a stately old home in New Orleans of its 999 ghosts. But the exterior of Gracey Mansion was actually built on a backlot in Atlanta.

It was an honor for production designer Darren Gilford to work on Disney’s new adaptation of “Haunted Mansion.” As one of the first creative Imagineering interns in the ’90s, the attraction has always held a soft spot for Gilford. “It was an opportunity to do something very different,” he told TheWrap. “I’ve never done [something like] this. I’ve only done one other period piece before.” And to see the finished product on the screen, Gilford and his team knew their Haunted Mansion history.
“When we started the project, we had a bible. An Imagineering Haunted Mansion bible which is like a sacred document,” he said. That bible laid out all the nitty-gritty about the ride, which the design team employed to craft recreations of the ride’s iconic portraits, as well as the wallpaper and various other items found inside the house. “There were so many Easter eggs in the details,...

When it came to finding a villain for Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” horror comedy, the obvious choice was the legendary 19th-century Hatbox Ghost from the popular Disneyland/Disney World attraction. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) and screenwriter Katie Dippold (the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot) even invented a spooky New Orleans backstory for him.
Voiced by Oscar winner Jared Leto, the Hatbox Ghost became a creepy, Voldemort-inspired trickster. But creating the look of the character (designed by Dneg and animated by Ilm) provided its own set of challenges apart from other 998 apparitions that haunt the Mansion. “The character itself went through many different iterations because its involvement grew as our movie was being developed and created,” production VFX supervisor Edwin Rivera (“Joker”) told IndieWire.
“And I think the realization was that he made for a great bad guy,” he continued, “and we wanna see a lot more of him. So...

Disney’s Haunted Mansion seeks to course correct from its looser adaptation of the famous theme park dark ride in 2003 with a new, much more faithful feature-length adaptation. That’s a tall order considering the original attraction opened in 1969, amassing decades’ worth of lore and history within its hallowed, spooky walls. Yet director Justin Simien and writer Katie Dippold carefully thread 999 happy haunts into a cohesive but densely packed storyline that brings every bit of the grim grinning ghost funhouse antics, mythology, and details you’d expect. But it’s Simien and Dippold’s poignant approach to grief and death that solidifies their Haunted Mansion as worthwhile gateway horror for a new generation.
Once a promising young scientist, Ben (Lakeith Stanfield) now drinks his life away when not leading ghost tours in New Orleans. Ben’s deep in the throes of grief, trapped at a crossroads after his beloved wife’s passing.

In 2003, audiences watched Eddie Murphy drop into “Haunted Mansion” in Rob Minkoff’s poorly received riff on Disney’s famous ride. Now 20 years later, Justin Simien, director of “Dear White People” and a former Disneyland ride operator, is trying his hand at putting the “grim, grinning ghosts” of the popular theme park attraction on the big screen — and the results are impressive.
Simien’s “Haunted Mansion” is a wondrous blend of horror and comedy, tinged with emotional resonance in its story of grief and how we try to connect with those we’ve lost. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”) and a solid ensemble, “Haunted Mansion” is a worthy take on the ride and a sleeper hit for families looking to find a fun summer film.

The Haunted Mansion is a dark ride attraction located at Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, and Tokyo Disneyland. The ride is set in a large, creaky mansion that is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of its former residents. Riders are led through a series of rooms, each of which is decorated with creepy props and features a different ghostly encounter. Some of the most famous scenes in the ride include the Ballroom, where a group of ghosts are dancing, the Conservatory, where a casket floats in mid-air, and Madame Leota’s Séance Room, where a disembodied head floats in a crystal ball. Someone at Disney decided this was enough substance to turn this into a feature film. Not sure why.

Once upon a time, Hollywood movie magic looked a bit different. In this age of CGI, with some blockbusters relying so heavily on digital effects that they border on fully animated features, it’s easy to forget how science fiction and fantasy once looked. This is why the throwback technical elements in Star Wars: The Force Awakens are so exciting to behold.
One could go on for quite some time about all these details, many of which come up in the extensive special features included on the Blu-ray. One production design revelation in particular that's worth celebrating is that the final fight scene between Kylo Ren and Rey, set in a dark and snowy forest, was shot on a set.
Initially, a location shoot was considered. Such a choice worked wonders for the forest sequence in House of Flying Daggers (2004) , certainly.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

Oh how the tables have turned! While Sci-Fi and Fantasy films normally do well at the box offices while garnering critical acclaim amongst fans, they’re usually snubbed during awards season. However, things seem to be slightly changing with the list of nominees at two recent award shows. There are few hidden gems that almost seem as if they snuck-in with the rest of the bunch.

Do Not Read This If You Have Not Seen The Movie! Rick Carter, who signed on to "The Force Awakens" even before J.J. Abrams, always looks for the Zen in a movie, so the first thing he did was huddle with George Lucas to figure out how to visualize The Force. It was like a meeting between Yoda and Obi-Wan. "He told me that when he was young he used to look at everything as though they were through binoculars, and as he got older, the view shifted to the other end," recalled the two-time Oscar winner ("Avatar," "Lincoln"). "The tableau was no longer as vivid up close. And I could relate to that. It's one of the reasons that I co-production design with younger people and wanted Darren Gilford. His attention to detail and execution allowed me to go in deeply as well as stand back. Also, Darren has...

This December, when J.J. Abrams. Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally hits theaters, it will continue the narrative of the original trilogy. With the big three stars, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, as well as others returning, there is an obvious continuity, but Abrams went to even greater lengths to connect The Force Awakens to the original trilogy. Talking to Thompson on Hollywood at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, production designer Darren Gilford (Oblivion) discussed how they used old school special effects at every opportunity, trying to replicate the way George Lucas did things on the first film back in 1977. He said: J.J.'s mandate from day one was authenticity and being as true to the original trilogy as possible. And he felt the prequels were flawed by the fact that they had every [CG] tool known to mankind and used everything at their disposal. ...

The generational theme of J.J. Abrams' "The Force Awakens" naturally carried over to the crew, including the production design partnership between two-time Oscar winner Rick Carter ("Lincoln," "Avatar") and up-and-comer Darren Gilford ("Oblivion," "Tron: Legacy"). Gilford told me it was a very fluid, symbiotic collaboration built on a back-to-basics, hybrid philosophy via Abrams for maintaining continuity with the original trilogy. This entailed shooting as much in-camera as possible and using lots of practical sets, models and matte paintings. They also reverse-engineered the VFX to accommodate, for example, 2D forced perspective backings rather than relying on CG set extensions from Industrial Light & Magic. You can glimpse this in a corridor shot in the Comic-Con making-of reel (see below). Of course, there's plenty of CG but only when expedient. "A big part of it was the two generations working together, and...

Academy invitee Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything.' Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

It is a fascinating moment to be a "Star Wars" fan. Right now, there is arguably more energy being expended on all things "Star Wars" than ever before. I remember the feeling in the early days of development on what became "Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace," when there were just rumbles of a possible new film or even *Gasp!* a new trilogy of films. Hell, I remember when the Special Editions were just a rumor. I remember when a friend of mine called and said, "They're not a rumor. I have something to show you." He came by my house with a videotape, and on that videotape was the very first teaser trailer for "Star Wars: A New Hope - The Special Edition," the very first new "Star Wars" footage in what had been fourteen years at that point. It was mind-blowing. It made me reassess...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

According to reports, Brit actor Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years A Slave") has been cast in director J.J. Abrams' prepping feature, "Star Wars: Episode VII".
Before Ejiofor riveted audiences with his performance as 'Solomon Northup' in "12 Years A Slave", he impressed genre film fans as 'The Operative' in writer/director Joss Whedon's 2005 feature "Serenity".
As "Episode VII" continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, wrote the screenplay for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and co-wrote "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."
Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on "Episode VII."
Dp is Dan Mindel, production designers are Rick Carter and Darren Gilford, costume designer is Michael Kaplan, Spfx supervisor is Chris Corbould, sound designer is Ben Burtt and VFX supervisor is Roger Guyett.

While there may not have been any official "Star Wars VII" casting announcements as of yet, we now have a breakdown of the official "Star Wars VII" production crew. Joining J. J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who are currently in the process of writing the screenplay, are director of photography Dan Mindel, sound designer Ben Burtt, production designers Rick Carter and Darren Gilford, special effects supervisor Chris Corbould and, of course, composer John Williams and producer Kathleen Kennedy.
Hopefully, now that this list of crew members is out it won't be long before we get some updates as far as "Star Wars VII" cast members go. Until then, we here at MTV News will just keep speculating as to which Star Wars Expanded Universe characters might be popping up in the new trilogy. Take Ben Skywalker for example, the son of Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker.

Yesterday's announcement that J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan would be taking over scripting duties on Disney "Star Wars: Episode VII" also included a little bonus down the bottom of the press release.
Namely it confirmed some of the key crew members who have been signed onto the project and are already at work on the pre-production phase ahead of the shoot at Pinewood Studios in the Spring.
Dan Mindel ("Mission: Impossible III," "Star Trek," "Star Trek Into Darkness") is director of photography, while John Williams is returning to the series to score the soundtrack.
Rick Carter ("Lincoln," "Avatar") and Darren Gilford ("Oblivion," "Tron: Legacy") are the production designers, while Michael Kaplan ("Star Trek Into Darkness") is the costume designer.

We’ve got new Star Wars: Episode VII info for you today. Word has come down from Star Wars.com that in addition to helming the upcoming film, J.J. Abrams will be penning the screenplay with Lawrence Kasdan.
Kasdan has plenty of experience in the world of Star Wars. He was co-screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. As previously announced, Kathleen Kennedy is executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.
“I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script,” states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
“There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.

Until now, Star Wars Episode VII was always going to be written by Michael Arndt. Within two weeks of the announcement that Disney were buying Lucasfilm, and launching a new Star Wars trilogy, word came that Arndt was the man to tell the first tale, months before J.J. Abrams officially came on board.
But now a press release from the franchise’s official website reveals that Abrams and long-time Lucasfilm collaborator Lawrence Kasdan are assuming screenwriting duties.
There’s no indication from the release as to why, and whether or not Arndt will be credited on the film, though Lucasfilm’s President, Kathleen Kennedy, notes, “Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point,” which would perhaps suggest that at least some of the work he’s been doing for Star Wars Episode VII will remain in place for Abrams and Kasdan to build on.

I've heard rumblings that things weren't going very well with screenwriter Michael Arndt on Star Wars: Episode VII. It looks like those rumblings were right. Arndt is no longer writing the film. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) are now taking over the duties of developing the script. There's no reason given as to why he was let go from the project, but he must not have been cutting it. Maybe there were some creative differences. Remember, he was brought on before Abrams was involved, so maybe they just didn't mesh well. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had this to say in a statement to StarWars.com,

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the visionary director of Tron: Legacy and producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.
When director Joseph Kosinski wrote the story for Oblivion in 2005, he listed in the treatment a soundtrack from the mastermind behind M83, Anthony Gonzalez. He felt that M83 was an artist whose music fit the story he was trying to tell, and knew that when he made the film, his temp score should become his permanent one.
The French native, who has toured internationally with bands from Depeche Mode and The Killers to Kings of Leon, debuted in 2001 and recently released his first double-disc album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” as his sixth record.
