Early synopsis reads: In the serene heart of the Heavens, as Lucifer questions the very fabric of angelic existence, a division grows, leading to a celestial war that threatens to tear apart the divine realm, with destinies forever changed. In a realm of celestial brilliance, angels live in harmony. The Morning Star, Lucifer, shines brightest, leading the heavenly choir. Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Rainbow and Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner.

As much as fans might crave it, Led Zeppelin won’t be making any new music. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones gathered to jam after their disastrous Live Aid show in 1985, but that reunion crashed before it took off. Their one-off 2007 performance at the O2 arena in London was the last time we saw Zep’s three surviving members playing together. Since they won’t be coming together to make new music, Led Zeppelin fans might want to explore the work of these four bands.

Page said the key to Led Zeppelin’s first album was having all four band members share the spotlight. Not many bands can have their drummer or bassist command the group, but Zep was one of them.

Slim Wilson lived a hell of a life. A tramp in the classic sense, he hopped trains and traveled the country, picking up all manner of scars from bullets and knives along the way. For money, he did odd jobs and threw dice, but Slim proudly proclaimed he wasn’t a gambler — he was a cheat. He was also a pimp, did time for murder, and was in Missouri State Penitentiary for armed robbery when he met the folklorist Bruce Jackson in 1964. On top of all that, Slim was, to Jackson’s ears,...

Deep Purple’s 21st studio album Whoosh! comes with dire warnings and dry wit, all propelled by one of the tightest still-working bands playing today. The record was produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin, who helped Pink Floyd build The Wall, taught Tim Curry to Read My Lips, and brought suspense to the Alice Cooper discography. For their third collaboration, Ezrin invited Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse, and Don Airey back to Nashville, where Deep Purple recorded 2013’s Now What?! and 2017’s inFinite.
The first single off the album, “Nothing At All,” is a cautionary observance on what people have done to the planet we’re renting short-term. The second single, “Man Alive,” casts a worried glimpse into the future. The single “Throw My Bones” takes on time and space. The music videos for each of the songs feature a Spaceman sitting in for the band.

Deep Purple have released their new song “Nothing at All,” the third single from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band’s upcoming 21st album Whoosh!
The sprightly new track finds Ian Gillan and company playfully tackling the concept of nothingness — both philosophically and as a course of action. It also as serves as a criticism of the damage humans have done to the Earth: “And the junk that sails out seven seas/Is very nearly up to my knees.”

Chicago – In 1973, director Norman Jewison fashioned a radical film version of the rock opera/Broadway show “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and the cinematic innovations plus stellar cast equaled a timeless movie musical classic. Josh Mostel portrayed King Herod and Barry Dennen was Pontius Pilate in the iconic film.
Jesus Christ Superstar (Jcs) began it’s life as a rock opera, a concept record released in 1969 with Ian Gillan of the rock group Deep Purple singing the part of Jesus. Two key members of the album’s cast went on to do the film … Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate. The Broadway show adaptation opened two years later, and the 1973 film followed with Ted Neeley as Jesus.

Deep Purple is one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they completed the “unholy trinity” of 1970s British hard rock sound. The group will release their 21st studio album Whoosh! on June 12. The album reunites the band with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, who worked with the iconic band’s last two albums.
Whoosh! comes four years after Deep Purple’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Black Sabbath first attempted to tour America in 1970, they had a Hell of a time. “We had to face the mayor of [every] town,” drummer Bill Ward once recalled. “We were banned all the time. They were afraid of us. They thought we were going to put a spell on you.”
Although Mick Jagger and Sammy Davis, Jr. had already publicly flirted with satanism, Black Sabbath — whose members all wore crosses to ward off evil — were much too scary for the United States. Their self-titled debut album sported a witchy woman on its cover,...

Jeff Fenholt, who played the title role in the original Broadway production and tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical Jesus Christ Superstar and later became a TV evangelist, died Tuesday. He was 68 and apparently ailing, and though his son and friends in the faith community confirmed his death, details were scarce.
“Yesterday, my dad – Jeff Fenholt – went home to be with the Lord,” wrote son Tristan Fenholt on Facebook. “Like all of us, he was not a perfect man, but he knew the perfect Savior (Jesus), and loved to share the gospel with as many people as possible. Black Sabbath’s songs have been covered many different ways — by soul singers, jazz combos and even a fast-food-themed parody band. But it still must have been a surprise for Tony Iommi and onetime Sabbath singer Ian Gillan (best known as the frontman for Deep Purple) when the Armenian ensemble the Naregatsi Orchestra presented them with a cover of the Technical Ecstasy deep cut “She’s Gone” at a special concert in Yerevan today. The ensemble, dressed in traditional garb, played the song on traditional instruments including the dulcimer-like qanun,...

When an earthquake decimated parts of Armenia and killing between 25,000 to 50,000 people in 1988, the world was in shock. The Ussr earmarked the equivalent of billions of dollars to help rebuild, the U.S. sent medical aid and search dogs, and people from all over Europe came to help. Perhaps the most surprising fundraising effort, though, came from a who’s who of rock and metal legends calling themselves Rock Aid Armenia. The supergroup, which featured Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Queen’s Brian May and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi,...

In the spring of 1982, Ozzy Osbourne’s life changed in an instant. In the years since Black Sabbath had fired him, in 1979, he’d picked himself up again, put out two successful albums that helped redefine heavy metal and garnered a following that rivaled that of his previous band. A big part of why things came together so easily for him was because he’d forged a creative partnership with a flashy young guitarist named Randy Rhoads who helped him work out his musical ideas in a way his previous bandmates hadn’t.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s a show that you may have quit or written off, but were happy that you gave a second chance?
(This could mean a show that got better as it went along, a show that course-corrected, a show that you felt got lumped together with others and therefore didn’t get a fair shake at first, or one that you see differently because of some changed perspective in your own life.)

In a Valley of Violence Is a Small Western Packing a Bloody PunchFantasia Film Festival 2016
Writer/director Ti West’s filmography is populated mostly with dark genre fare of the thrilling and/or horrific variety, but while they typically have moments of humor you’d be hard-pressed to call any of them comedies. The possible exception there is his 2011 chiller, The Innkeepers, which delivers more than enough laughs and smiles to justify the label while also being legitimately scary. I’d argue it’s his best film due in part to the masterful balance in tone he creates throughout.

December is a month that increasingly sees few releases of new albums, so the closer this list gets to the present day, the fewer albums of importance there are to discuss, and most of those are hip-hop albums.

Traffic: Mr. Fantasy Aka Heaven Is in Your Mind (Island)
Shortly after Steve Winwood quit the Spencer Davis Group (of which he was the lead singer and organist), he formed Traffic with some guys he'd jammed with at a club in Birmingham: guitarist/vocalist Dave Mason, saxophonist/flutist Chris Wood, and drummer/lyricist Jim Capaldi. After a couple of hit singles, they convened at a country cottage and put together the debut album by Traffic, titled Mr. Fantasy in their native country. By the time it was released, Mason had already quit.
The English and American editions were rather different. Not only did the U.S. LP (on United Artists) have...

Black Sabbath star Geezer Butler, Tom Morello and actor Ewan McGregor are among the first wave of celebrities paying tribute to Deep Purple star Jon Lord, who passed away on Monday after suffering a pulmonary embolism.
Jon Lord was one of the founding fathers of rock veterans Deep Purple
Morello and McGregor offered their respects on Twitter.com, while Butler posted a tribute on his website.
Rage Against the Machine star Morello writes, "Rip the great Jon Lord, Deep Purple's cornerstone/keyboardist. So many great great songs and that incredible Sound of his! Thankyou."
And fan McGregor adds, "Jon played with my great friend Tony Ashton. They'll be jamming upstairs now!"
Meanwhile, Butler took to his blog and posted: "Very sad to hear of Jon's death, following his battle with the demon cancer. One of the great musicians of my generation. Tony Iommi recently worked with Jon, and said...

Think about this, have you ever asked yourself the question… “If I didn’t have music in my life, where would I be and what would I do”? The truth is, without music the world would be a cold and shallow grave. Music can free the mind to new experiences just by listening to it, let alone creating it. The harp can sooth the savage beast and who doesn’t understand that more than Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi. At least that is the way these pioneers of rock and roll see it, as should we all. There is absolutely no one on this planet that should be deprived of this experience. In...

Coming this May to the UK will be a new 2-cd Deluxe Edition of Black Sabbath's 1983 album Born Again, the only album they recorded with Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan. The upcoming release, which will be a remastered expanded edition, will contain the original album, along with a second disc containing 2 bonus tracks, including "The Fallen," a previously unreleased studio outtake recorded during the original album session. The album will also have 9 tracks from the BBC Friday Rock Show broadcast of Sabbath's August 1983 appearance at the Reading Rock Festival where they performed Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water." See full track listing here below.
Unfortunately, the 2-dc Deluxe Edition will only be released in the UK, not in the United States (the original album has never been released on CD in the U.S., though it is available on mp3). The release is set for May 30, 2011 and is...

Some of Heavy Metal’s greatest headbangers have joined together to form a massive supergroup for charity.
Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan will front WhoCares, a charity band that also features Whitesnake keyboardist Jon Lord and Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain. Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has also joined the band for two charity songs due out shortly.
According to Gillan.com, the band “has recorded two brand new songs with the intent to support the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia, fallen in love with the country and the people and have dedicated a lot of work to a nation still shocked after the earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988 at 11:41am.”
