Film Adaptation of J.K. Rowling Children’s Book ‘The Christmas Pig’ in Early Development (Exclusive)
J.K. Rowling’s bestselling children’s book “The Christmas Pig” is set to get a film adaptation.
Variety understands the project is in a very early stage of development in-house and a production company has not yet been attached.
Rowling’s production company Bronte already produces the BBC/HBO adaptation of her adult detective series “Cormoran Strike.”
“The Christmas Pig” was first published in 2021 with illustrations by Jim Field. At the time of publication, Swift Films made a series of promotional videos for the project.
The book tells the story of a boy named Jack, who loses his childhood toy Dur Pig — nicknamed Dp — on Christmas Eve after his stepsister throws it out of the family car. Although Jack is offered a replacement called Christmas Pig as consolation, he misses his old faithful friend and casts Christmas Pig (abbreviated to Cp) aside.
To cheer Jack up, Cp proposes a plan to rescue his best toy.

Probably the biggest title on the House of Mouse streamer’s calendar this month is the exclusive streaming premiere of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” the ground-breaking and record-setting concert film tracking Swift’s Eras Tour. The new “(Taylor’s Version)” edit will feature the concert film in its entirety for the first time, plus the song “cardigan” and four additional acoustic songs.
Also premiering this month, “X-Men: The Animated Series” gets a long overdue revival with the new animated series “X-Men '97,” featuring the returns of original cast members Ray Chase, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and more. Plus, the British historical adventure “Renegade Nell” finally gets its series premiere at the end of the month.

“The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.
For producer Sarah Brocklehurst, the Sundance premiere also marked something of an enjoyable full circle, landing almost five years to the day after the Sundance 2019 debut of “Animals.” The film, which screens at the Berlin Film Festival, also marks the first feature from her Brock Media banner.
“Animals,” based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel about hedonism and friendship (described as a “Withnail for Girls”) and starring Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat, may not have been Brocklehurst’s debut film (that was 2012’s “Black Pond”), but she claims it was a career game-changer. “It proved to myself and probably...

The last time TV audiences saw Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott – detective fiction’s reigning will-they-won’t-they king and queen – they were hugging outside a fancy perfume shop. The private investigators had solved Troubled Blood’s cold case, exposed a serial killer, and had time left over for some belated birthday shopping for the newly divorced Robin.
An almost-kiss between them turned into a heartfelt hug and Strike’s declaration that Robin was his best friend, leaving them still tantalisingly apart but ready for their next adventure.
That next adventure is now on its way, confirms Deadline and the BBC. Filming is currently underway on The Ink Black Heart, with Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger back in the lead roles, and Tom Edge back as the show’s screenwriter and creator.

One Night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living, just as they were on they day they died, 30 years before.

When hanging out with your nerdy pals, there's a chance that one question will enter the conversation: "Which is the superior Hollywood Chris?" Most of your friends will be "Saturday Night Live"-avoiding Chris Evans fans since he's the All-American hunk, while others might side with "Extraction" franchise star Chris Hemsworth, as he's the perfect blend of a Golden Retriever and a Ken doll. And though there are other stars named Chris to choose from (including the dinosaur-fighting Pratt), there's one Chris that deserves the most respect: Chris Pine.
With his classic-meets-avant-garde aesthetic, Pine represents those who color outside the lines, enjoy lavender lattes with an extra shot of espresso, and listen to live recordings of Fleetwood Mac on rainy days. He's a performer who is immensely talented as an actor but also possesses the kind of dreamy singing voice that is impossible not to swoon over. Plus, Pine isn't afraid to laugh at himself,...

Exclusive: Jk Rowling’s production company Brontë Film and TV has posted a 74% drop in profits after Covid closed theatre performances of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
Brontë Film and TV was established in 2012 as a vehicle through which to adapt Rowling’s work. She founded the company with her literary agent Neil Blair and is the majority shareholder.
The outfit’s pre-tax profit was £1.8M ($2.2M) in the 12 months to March 2022, compared with £6.9M over the same period the year before. Brontë Film and TV’s revenue halved to £8.8M, according to a UK Companies House filing.
The company’s earnings report blamed “lower income streams and profit shares from theatrical productions which were closed for a large part of the [financial] period due to Covid restrictions.”
Brontë’s subsiduary, Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, reported revenue of £3.5M, which was down £6.6M, or 65%, compared with 2021. Its pre-tax profit fell 84% to £1.1M.

The BBC is reportedly preparing to renew its crime drama Strike, based on the books written by Jk Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
Season six – which is yet to be confirmed by the corporation – would adapt The Ink Black Heart, the sixth novel in the detective series.
It would likely see Tom Burke reprise his role as the gruff private investigator Cormoran Strike, alongside Holliday Grainger as his sidekick Robin Ellacott.
The Ink Black Heart, published in August 2022, involves a storyline about a woman who is killed after being accused of transphobia.
In recent years, Rowling has made headlines for sharing her controversial views on transgender rights. She was first met with a backlash in June 2020 after calling out an article’s use of the phrase “people who menstruate”.
Since then, Rowling has repeatedly come under criticism for various comments, which many have accused of being transphobic.

This is more like it! No, episode two of Troubled Blood wasn’t any more generous with the Robin/Strike underpants progress, but it was several times more exciting than the opener by dint of having something happen in the present day. Double points for that thing being Holliday Grainger’s Robin wearing a disguise and doing a fake accent (tick that off your Strike bingo card).
It wasn’t just one fake accent this episode, but two. First there was the welcome return of fictional toff Venetia Hall, then there was a cockney teenager in a baseball cap who infiltrated a nursing home with a chorus of innits and awrights. Robin’s Mr Ben selection of improv personas has always been one of Strike’s highlights, and this was no different. This isn’t promising. As a TV show, Strike‘s appeal has never been the ingenuity of its cases, with their cardboard characters, pantomime twists and baroque plotting. Instead, it’s always been about the chemistry between leads Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger, and an all-round sense of retro comfort. In the first episode of four-part series Troubled Blood, the chemistry was missing and the retro comfort had been swapped for a retro case that sucked the energy out.
Things start well enough, with a change-of-scenery trip to Cornwall where Cormoran is visiting adoptive parents Ted and Joan. She’s dying of cancer but keeping her terminal diagnosis a secret. More unexpressed pain for our King of unexpressed pain! Just what the doctor ordered. And here comes Robin, driving her clapped-out Land Rover all the way from London to St Mawes, a knight on a...

Strike: Troubled Blood really is an extraordinarily fine crime drama, where a range of exceptional talents come together to create something that is actually greater than the sum of its very formidable parts. That is something rare and to be cherished. And indeed watched, and I can unreservedly commend this four-parter as a highlight of your festive viewing. It starts brilliantly, but gets better, and there are some surprising and compelling star performances to come.
It’s the latest adaptation, by Tom Edge, of the Strike detective works of Jk Rowling, and probably the best. Tom Burke is once again in the title role of Cormoran Strike, the gruff but clever private investigator. Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. And his affection and respect for his resourceful business partner, Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) always threatens, or promises,...

Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. And his affection and respect for his resourceful business partner, Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) always threatens, or promises,...

With his record-setting Parasite recently earning another achievement––landing among Sight and Sound’s poll of the greatest films of all-time––expectations couldn’t be higher for Bong Joon Ho’s first major studio blockbuster, a sci-fi epic starring none other than Robert Pattinson. With production having kicked off this past August, we now have the first look and some more details.
Adapted from Edward Ashton’s recent novel Mickey7, Bong is upping the ante for his Warner Bros. production with the title revealed to be Mickey 17. The sci-fi tale follows a disposable worker drone sent on an expedition with humans to colonize the ice world Niflheim. If any mission is too dangerous, Mickey is sent and if he dies, a new body can be regenerated with its memories intact.
The number refers to how many clones he runs through after continually meeting his death, and it’s clear to...

Strike is Back! Which is excellent news, but more excellent by far is that both Strike and Robin (street names Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger) are on the show this week to talk about it. Plus Guy Pearce is also around to chat A Spy Among Friends, which marks the launch of Itvx, a streaming service that also brings us Tell Me Everything, enabling us to get in touch with our inner Gen Z.
Plus we delight in (or endure) a little country music (depending on taste) in George & Tammy on Paramount+, and we get back in touch with our European brethren as the Dutch take our pronunciation to task, and the Spanish take issue with us perpetuating falsehoods about their accent. It's been quite a week!

Warning: contains spoilers for The Capture Series 2 Episodes 1-4.
The Capture series two, episode four ends on a cliffhanger that could have come straight from an episode of The Twilight Zone – a man answers the telephone in his hotel room and hears his own voice speaking back at him. It’s time they met face to face, other-him says, then there’s a ring at the door. He walks over and there on the video intercom is… him, his own face looking up at him and waiting to be buzzed inside.
What are we talking? Hallucination? Apparition? Clone? No, The Capture isn’t a fantasy or sci-fi, it’s a political thriller set (more or less) in the real world. This is technology, sufficiently advanced that, as Arthur C. Clarke might say, it’s indistinguishable from magic.

You have to wonder whether Holliday Grainger misses the corsets. It’s been five years since the star of Strike last wore the punishing vintage garment; an eternity really, given that she spent the better part of a decade bound into one playing frothy aristocrats in shows such as The Borgias and haughty royalty in films like Anna Karenina. “I’ve worn so many I think my bloody liver is bruised,” she cackles, a trace of her native Manchester accent peeping through the negative space of her vowels. The short answer, then, is no. She does not miss the corsets.
These days, Grainger is about comfort. The actor calls me from bed one afternoon, her hair pulled back from her high-boned, full-moon face, which is bare. Not celebrity bare (meaning concealer and mascara) but actually bare. She’s in workout clothes and her rosy cheeks are rosier than usual. I...

Britain produces cop shows with an abandon that defies our present moment’s global supply shortages. Just this week, ITV launches two new procedurals – Ridley and The Suspect – while the BBC brings back its hit surveillance drama, The Capture, for a second season. It is a national addiction on a scale usually reserved for tea consumption, football hooliganism and insincere apologies. Within this obsession, The Capture represents the genre at its classiest and, though it might upset some patriots at our state broadcaster to say so, at its most American.
Holliday Grainger – surely one of the most charismatic actors to remain predominantly constrained to the small screen – returns as Rachel Carey, now promoted to Dci and working within the bubble of Correction. Correction, as The Capture’s first series exposed, is hi-tech audiovisual manipulation software, used for the planting of digital evidence by the authorities. As such, viewers can be fairly confident that,...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Capture Series 1.
The most effective horror films are the ones that make menace out of everyday things – the TV in Poltergeist, the shower in Psycho, little girls with long, wet hair in… everything. Surveillance thriller The Capture does the same by turning the simple act of walking down a city street into a paranoid, pulse-raiser. Look up at the street corners and lampposts and you’ll see them, CCTV cameras feeding a data network that, combined with deepfake technology sufficiently advanced to make it indistinguishable from magic, can make you anybody’s puppet.
That’s what happens to Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) in The Capture Series 1. First, Shaun’s barristers got him acquitted on the charge of unlawfully killing an unarmed Taliban insurgent on tour in Afghanistan. After serving six months in prison, Shaun was freed when his legal team called into question...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Capture series one.
The Capture‘s first series saw Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) go full circle. In episode one, he was released from prison – acquitted for a crime he had, in fact, committed – and then in episode six, he was imprisoned for a crime of which he was innocent. In between, the BBC surveillance thriller introduced viewers to a world in which you literally can’t believe your eyes. As Dci Rachel Carey (Strike‘s Holliday Grainger) discovered, the intelligence services were using ultra-sophisticated deepfake technology to conjure up court-admissible ‘evidence’ to ensure the criminal conviction of anybody they wanted convicted.
The situation turned out to be even more morally murky when the CIA whistle blower threatening to go public with the practice of CCTV footage “correction” turned out to be a double (triple?) agent planted by the CIA so that some elements...

Australian director Sophie Hyde has quite an impressive resume of films highlighting the complicated ways sex, gender, and relationships shape our day-to-day lives. Her debut fiction film, "52 Tuesdays" is a stunning story about a teenage girl coming of age as one of her parents undergoes gender transition, which earned Hyde the Directing Award at Sundance the year of release. Her follow-up film, "Animals," stars Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat as two party girls forced to accept the complicated mess that is adult female friendship. Now, in her third narrative feature, already one of the best films of 2022,...
