Will Smith and Chris Rock's heated exchange at the 2022 Academy Awards will go down in Oscars infamy. The annual show took a sharp turn on March 27, 2022, when Smith slapped Rock in the face after the comedian made a cruel joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her buzz cut. The "Red Table Talk" cohost has been candid about her hair loss and alopecia, so Smith took offense to his wife's medical condition being a punchline.
The shocking moment moved rather quickly during the Oscars, leaving many viewers with unanswered questions - mainly why Smith chose that moment to confront Rock. For those unaware of their previous encounters, Smith's actions may have seemed extreme. However, several of Smith's peers have defended him - including his "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" costar Janet Hubert. On March 27, 2022, Hubert shared a now-deleted Instagram post (via Entertainment Weekly) with a screenshot of Smith giving his acceptance speech captioned,...

Who says you can't go home again? Sometimes, you need a mom's unconditional love when things get tough.
After she and Ryan broke up, Helen flew home on Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 7 for some Southern cooking and her mother's love and advice. Back home, Paula offered Maddie comfort and meddling to get the ladies to reconcile.
Dana Sue had lots to stress over as she learned about her daughter's lies, and Sullivan's was vandalized.
Helen was suffering, so she went to her safe place -- home. Helen was like the prodigal daughter; her mom welcomed her home with open arms.
Like most mothers, she knew a crisis precipitated this sudden visit home. I loved how Helen's mom kept singing and cooking until Helen finally broke down. The duet Heather Headley sang with Janet Hubert was mesmerizing.
It should tell Helen something that neither her mother nor her friends thought she was happy with Ryan.

Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers explore uncharted territory in their romantic Netflix adaptation "The Perfect Find," starring as 40- and 20-something-year-old coworkers who get into a "forbidden fruit" entanglement. The movie, based on bestselling author Tia Williams's novel of the same name, follows the meet-cute-gone-wrong of fired-and-rehired fashionista Jenna (Union) and her random fling-turned-colleague Eric (Powers) - who happens to be the son of Jenna's tyrant boss, Darcy (Gina Torres). The film also stars Aisha Hinds, Db Woodside, Janet Hubert, and La La Anthony.
"I think that that intimidation, and it's not in a bad way, it's more to just keep me on my toes really."
The unconventional love story in director Numa Perrier's vintage Hollywood-inspired rom-com challenged Union and Powers in more ways than one. But working alongside Union, Powers says, especially encouraged him to stay on his A game. "I mean, you just want to make sure you're up to par,...

The Perfect Find is a film directed by Numa Perrier starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers. Based on the novel by Tia Williams.
It’s Friday, the perfect day for a romantic comedy with enough arguments to enchant the most sensitive hearts and also with enough tests to scare away (definitely) those who are looking for something more in cinema.
Another romantic comedy? Yes, but this one has its very funny moments and, despite the formula, manages to entertain thanks to the brilliant and inspired performances of its supporting characters.
Alisha Hinds and Gina Torres are spectacular and add the finishing touch to this romantic comedy that, this time, really is a comedy.

Don’t expect this combination to revolutionize cinema, because it definitely won’t. It’s a story about romance between generations, a portrait of success in a city...

‘The Perfect Find’ Review: Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers Charm in Fashion-Forward Netflix Swooner
Fashionista Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) took quite the tumble from her position in New York’s world of style. In “The Perfect Find” — Netflix’s visually vibrant, cinema-loving, if not quite perfect, rom-com — her professional and romantic plummet is documented in opening credits that cleverly use an animated collage to relate her story.
So, when we meet Jenna in person ,she’s without a job, and her man (D.B. Woodside) of 10 years has moved on … or so it seems. The 40-year-old is sporting baggy sweats, and not because she’s headed to the gym. She’s been living in her parents’ home licking her wounds, for a year, when her mother calls her out on it. The scene between mother (Janet Hubert) and grown-ass daughter is amusing and promising. As are the musical and visual choices director Numa Perrier makes that evoke Old Hollywood in a film with characters decidedly not Old Hollywood.

“Bel-Air” creator Morgan Cooper said since day one of developing the reimagined version of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” he and Will Smith found “organic ways” to include the original cast members.
From a viral reimagining to a meeting with Smith and onto Peacock screens, “Bel-Air” is now the streamer’s most-watched original series. While it is inspired by NBC’s original sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Cooper told TheWrap that he was very intentional about the show having its own identity and even refused to watch “Fresh Prince” during “Bel-Air’s” early development.
“When I was making the short film we released in 2019, which got this started, it was really important to me throughout the whole process of creating it to not watch ‘Fresh Prince’ at all,” Cooper said, adding that the series won’t perfectly mirror the storylines from its predecessor. “We’re not going to extrapolate ideas from it,...

AMC has cancelled another show as it was being produced. Last month, it was revealed that the second season renewal of Moonhaven had been rescinded. Now, comes word that Demascus has been axed as well.

AMC has opted not to move forward with the series “Demascus,” Variety has confirmed.
The show was ordered to series at the cabler back in February 2022 and had completed production but will no longer air on AMC. The news comes after Variety exclusively reported that AMC was also not proceeding with Season 2 of the legal drama “61st Street” or with its planned series adaptation of the novel “Invitation to a Bonfire.”
The decisions were made as part of cost cutting measures announced by AMC in December 2022, in which the company stated it would take write-downs for up to 475 million. That figure included 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizational restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing. Just prior to that announcement, AMC Networks CEO Christina Spade abruptly departed the company after less than three months in the role. James L. Dolan was then named interim executive chairman by the board of directors shortly thereafter.

For the first three seasons, Janet Hubert played “Aunt Viv” on The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air, dealing out wisdom to Will Smith’s Philadelphia transplant. Aunt Viv remained a constant on the show, but starting with season four, Daphne Maxwell Reid stepped into the role, giving pop culture enthusiasts a new term for sudden recastings. But to actors who replace other actors, the term “Aunt Viv” might have negative connotations.
At least, that’s the impression viewers get when watching Don Cheadle‘s reaction during an interview with GQ. “It’s famously known online how you ‘Aunt Viv’d’ Terrance Howard for the role of Rhodey,” the interviewer observed, prompting a look of shock from Cheadle. “I ‘Aunt Viv’d’ him?” he asks with incredulity, before clarifying, “I did not move Terrance out of a role.” However, he stumbles when trying to explain exactly what happened. “That’s… they had decided they weren’t…...

It was the news that no one was really expecting. On Saturday, Netflix announced that the hit fantasy series The Witcher was being renewed for a fourth season. So far, so good. But there’s a catch: Henry Cavill would be stepping down from the lead role, to be replaced with The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. Cavill had played the grey-haired demon slayer Geralt of Rivia for two seasons (with a third forthcoming) to a warm reception from fans. To fans of the Witcher books, or the massively successful video game adaptations, Geralt is a Big Deal, and Cavill had thrown himself into the role with gusto and all the requisite reverence. Reactions to the news have, then, been predictably sour, ranging from doom-mongering predictions of creative decline to threats of a boycott. But is this really justified?
After all, The Witcher is hardly the first TV series to recast a character.

Cruel!”, “Completely disgusting!”, “Candy ass!” – these are just some of the barbs that Hollywood stars have unleashed upon each other over the years. But which actors said them? And about whom?
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte might have been romantically entangled in I Love Trouble, but they also had a few tangles – and not the good kind – with each other off-set. And even though Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams went on to date in real life after The Notebook, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for those two, either.
A lot of this is ancient history. And the stars and their fans probably want to move on.
But before we bury the hatchet, why not stir the figurative pot a little more, with this long list of actors who have clashed on set…

Veteran actor Denise Dowse, who is best known for her roles as vice principal Yvonne Teasley on "Beverley Hills 90210," scientist Dr. Olivia Biggs in "Bio-Dome," and Judge Rebecca Damsen on "The Guardian," died on August 13, 2022. More recently, Dowse is probably most recognizable as Dr. Rhonda Pine in the award-winning HBO dramedy "Insecure" from Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore.
Dowse's sister Tracey kept fans informed about the 64-year-old's condition when she was admitted to the hospital after contracting a virulent form of meningitis that resulted in a coma. A few days later, an update was released via Instagram breaking the news of the actor's passing:
It is with a very heavy heart that I inform everyone that my sister, Denise Dowse has gone forward to meet our family in eternal life. Denise Yvonne Dowse was the most amazing sister, a consummate, illustrious actress, mentor and director. She was my very best friend and final family member.

Lawrence will play Demascus’ irascible Uncle Forty, a man who has seen better days. Despite his failing health, Uncle Forty is eager to be acknowledged as the (currently self-proclaimed) patriarch of the family.

In the new Peacock series “Bel-Air,” Cassandra Freeman becomes the third actress to take on the role of Aunt Viv. The series reimagines the classic ’90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” where Janet Hubert originated the role followed by Daphne Maxwell Reid, and it would be daunting for any actress to step into their shoes. Luckily, “Bel-Air” creator Morgan Cooper and showrunner Rasheed Newson assured her, “Don’t worry about those shoes,” recalls Freeman in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. “‘You’re here to create your own shoes, so what would that look like?’ And that really freed me up.” Watch the video interview above.

Jada Pinkett Smith is ready to move on from Will Smith and Chris Rock's Oscars altercation. Two days after the televised incident, Pinkett Smith shared her first public response via an Instagram post with a simple pink graphic that reads, "This is a season for healing and I'm for it."
Pinkett Smith's post comes after her husband issued a formal public apology to Rock. "My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable," Smith wrote in an Instagram post. "Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."
He added: "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place...

Janet Hubert is speaking out in support of Will Smith following one of the most shocking scenes in Oscars history.
Hubert, who originally appeared as Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, took to Instagram to react to Smith smacking Chris Rock during Sunday's Academy Awards telecast.
“So Proud Of You!” she wrote in response to Smith’s acceptance speech before addressing the slap.
“There is only so much one can take… sometimes you have to slap back,” she shared.
“Celebrate the win… nothing else matters."
"Both actions were incorrect but Chris didn’t need to go there. Met him once… it was enough for me… very mean spirited.”
The heated moment played out when Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith being in "G.i. Jane" because of her shaved head.
Smith made his way up to the stage and slapped Rock, to the surprise of Rock and everyone at the star-studded event.

“Bel Air” star Cassandra Freeman is the niece of one of the biggest African American art collectors in the United States. This was a quality the actress was eager to bring to her character ‘Vivian Banks’ in the reimagination of “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” for Peacock.

I don’t know what it is recently, but I’ve really been enjoying the unapologetic nature of Lifetime’s TV movies, in particular those that skirt around the horror genre. It seems, at least to me, that Lifetime has taken the reigns from the likes of Syfy, who years ago produced cheap but fun movies that riffed on bigger budget movies and, ultimately, made their films almost a genre of their own. And Lifetime is doing the same with their films – taking their traditional over the top dramas but scaling them back a little, throwing in the tropes, cliches and stereotypes of horror and thriller movies to create their own hybrid films.

No matter what it turned out to actually be, “Bel-Air” was always going to raise some eyebrows by its premise alone. As every network and streaming service scrambles to make the best (or at least most) use of their in-house IP, a grim reboot of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” for Peacock sounds like something ripped straight from a “30 Rock” joke about NBC trying to make it 1990 again through science or magic. Transforming the neon flair of the popular Will Smith sitcom into a flashy drama could be the inevitable nadir of the Hollywood reboot machine going through its recyclables. But in 2022, there are far worse and stranger inspirations for shows than older ones that succeeded — and at least in its first three episodes, “Bel-Air” proves itself far from the worst offender.
Irrespective of genre, the basic concept of “Fresh Prince” — scrappy kid from the supposed “wrong side of...

When William Jackson Harper turns on his warm, steady charm, he proves an impossible actor to resist. Even when portraying a neurotic breakdown, as he did frequently as an ethics professor on “The Good Place,” or embodying someone who makes questionable decisions, as he does on “Love Life,” Harper imbues his characters with a grounded sincerity that shines through their darkest days. That “The Good Place” eventually bet the house on Harper’s ability to anchor the most significant romance in the universe came as no surprise, even as that romance threatened to swallow the entire series whole. Harper was simply that charismatic, justifying the gambit with every focused gaze and tender smile.
It’s tempting to say that it was only a matter of time before Harper landed a romantic comedy role worthy of his talents, if only because he so clearly deserved it. That assumption of inevitability would,...
