“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.
Here are our current predictions in alphabetical order. No movie will be deemed a frontrunner until I see it.
Frontrunners:
Will Files (“War for the Planet of the Apes”)
Richard King (“Dunkirk”)
Mark Mangini (“Blade Runner 2049”)

We’re all familiar with how silly movie sound effects can sometimes be, but one of the things that David Fincher’s cult classic “Fight Club” is best remembered for is its willingness to get as down and dirty with its sound design as it did with those bloody fight scenes.
In a new tribute video by Film Radar, “The Beauty of Sound Design” reveals what went into achieving the uncomfortably realistic noises of fists cracking against faces. The truth isn’t for the faint of heart, but then again, neither is the film.

Most films aren’t necessarily interested in depicting violence honestly. If they did, most fights would be over after the first punch, and then we wouldn’t have movies like The Raid: Redemption, The Raid 2, and well, every other action movie that isn’t part of The Raid franchise.
Other times, the authenticity of violence is part and parcel of a film’s raison d’etre, as is the case of Fight Club. As this new video from Film Radar shows, the tried-and-true sounds of socking wouldn’t play out in a movie that aims to depict the real damage fists can cause.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.
What may come as a surprise to some is that Adam McKay’s comedy-drama about the 2008 financial crisis did rather well. It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...

"All is Lost" is nothing if not a showcase for post-production sound. Bereft of dialogue, a story told virtually through score and sound effects editing, it would be a dream project for any sound editor. And so it was for Oscar nominees Richard Hymns and Steve Boeddeker. But the film's post-production fate was in flux for a time as affordability was a huge consideration for the indie production. It finally did make its way to the halls of Skywalker Sound, however (where it was known affectionately as "Bob on a Boat"), and Hymns actually came to it first through his wife, who had worked for star Robert Redford's company for 10 years before they married. At a reception, the actor "was talking about this film he'd just finished and it was set on a boat with no dialogue," Hymns recalls. "As a sound editor, I'm salivating. And I love sailing.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

In All Is Lost, J.C. Chandor's nail-biting drama set on a 39-foot schooner in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed character (Robert Redford) fights for his life – rain, storms and sharks be damned. But, as this behind-the-scenes clip proves, despite the relatively calm setting – no exploding cars, no invading aliens – a calculated plan was always at close hand.
