"Transformers One" has released its first trailer, finally giving the public the peek that CinemaCon attendees got last week. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film looks to offer a breezy and colorful animated adventure akin to the "Spider-Verse" films.
Does the title "Transformers One" sound like a misnomer to you? Audiences have already been subjected to eight of these movies and they're infamously not good ("Bumblebee" is innocent and 1986's "The Transformers: The Movie" barely skirts by on nostalgia despite how cynical it was). Well, you see, the ninth "Transformers" movie will be going back to the beginning. Set on Cybertron, the home planet of the Robots in Disguise, the film is set before the Transformers got to Earth, before the Autobots and Decepticons went to war, and before Optimus Prime and Megatron had those names.

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.
The Tiger’s Apprentice follows the well-covered, formulaic path of a young protagonist discovering a family secret and bearing it against some sort of antagonist. In this particular case, Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese American boy living in San Francisco, is the latest in a...

The highly anticipated addition to the action sci-fi franchise Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts opened in theaters on June 9. According to Deadline, “the movie has pounced on a $110M opening weekend. Combined with domestic, that gives the Autobots and Maximals a global debut of $170.5M, coming in ahead of projections. The Steven Caple Jr-directed franchise reboot was No. 1 worldwide and at the international box office for the frame.” The film’s exciting score is from Jongnic “Jb” Bontemps.
Bontemps is a uniquely modern film composer, harmonizing a classical education with his rich tech background. As a maestro of Silicon Valley he wrote everything from The CW sci-fi series 4400, the Netflix docuseries We Are: The Brooklyn Saints, Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, the Netflix and Shondaland-produced documentary about the Debbie Allen Dance Company’s award-winning production of The Nutcracker, and the Netflix documentary Murder To Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story.

If you’re the kind of superhero enthusiast who would like to ask, “Why so serious?” to the gloomy fanboys who live by Joker memes and other grim-and-gritty signifiers, “DC’s League of Super-Pets” is a goofy, colorful throwback to those comic books of the 1950s and ’60s that allowed no costumed avenger to go un-sidekick-ed.
While not as anarchic or outrageously hilarious as “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,” this latest all-ages animated adventure from DC Comics and Warner Bros. nonetheless has — and offers — lots of fun with the four-legged counterparts of a Justice League that’s more “Super Friends” than Snyder Cut.
We open on the final moments of the planet Krypton, where puppy Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) hops into baby Kal-El’s spacecraft to join him on his sojourn to Earth. Decades later, Krypto is a devoted ally to Superman (John Krasinski), aiding him against villains...

Multimedia Music today announced it has closed a deal to acquire master and publishing rights to a 48-title film score catalog from Atlantic Screen Music in what it calls a “mid-seven figure transaction.”
Atlantic Screen Music includes rights to scores including “2 Guns,” “Lone Survivor,” “The Host,” “Dredd,” “Escape Plan” and “Broken City.” Multimedia said that, cumulatively, the films have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box office and even more through ancillary channels.

“Akira” – repeatedly claimed as one of the greatest anime films of all time – has done little to support the sales of its followup film, “Steamboy.” Katsuhiro Otomo’s equally monumental second feature doubly hit the books as one of the most expensive animated movies made to date. With a budget of 2.4 billion Yen ($26 million Usd), this ambitious production cost over 180,000 drawings, 440 CG cuts, and around ten years of production for a 2-hour production.
Needless to say, it was epic.
Like “Akira,” “Steamboy” tells another cautionary tale of mass destruction. This time, however, the film takes place in Britain at the peak of the Victorian era. Here, the film begins at the heart of the Industrial Revolution: Manchester. The film opens when the 13-year-old James Ray Steam (Anne Suzuki) receives a mysterious package from his grandfather. Apparently, an accompanying letter says, this unwieldy contraption is a “steam ball...

At a point when comic book cinema is at its greatest height, maybe it is time for more films to arrive based on other properties that fall outside of usual suspects Marvel and DC. The grounds are now so fertile that we could see virtually anything from a comic book root grow and thrive on the big screen. We live in an age where, in the last few years, two (soon to be three) Ant-Man films have been made, Aquaman became the Dceu’s largest grossing film, Joker swept the board in academy award nominations and Avengers: Endgame dethroned Avatar’s box office crown. Anything is possible and the world seems ready for any new comic book films, let alone one based on successful material and with future aspirations.

At this point, it’s hard to imagine that any comic book properties haven’t been mined for film. However, we have a new one in Bloodshot, but it does seem rather unlikely to start up a new franchise for star Vin Diesel. While on paper, this flick must have seemed like a cool vehicle for him, it instead offers up nothing we haven’t seen before, along with a visual style where you can never see anything during the myriad action scenes. In short order, you become disengaged and frankly rather frustrated. Those who expect a sequel from this initial outing are likely to be very disappointed. The movie is based on a comic book, as you might imagine. Ray Garrison (Diesel) is a soldier we watch get murdered early on, only to be brought back to life through nanotechnology by the Rst corporation, led by Dr. Emil Harting...

Director Peter Berg and star Mark Wahlberg putting their collaborative stamp on the Spenser novels (as well as the television show Spenser: For Hire) was always going to go one of two ways. Either their cinematic style would take the character and property in interesting new directions, or their version wouldn’t vibe. Well, Spenser Confidential falls way more into the latter category than the former. As a throwaway Netflix release, this has some mild charms. As a Berg/Wahlberg collaboration, it’s one of their most forgettable. It all adds up to a final product that never really makes a compelling case for its own existence. Sadly, it’s nothing more than instantly forgettable. The film is a comedic action outing, while more or less functioning as an origin story, as well. We meet Spenser (Wahlberg) right as he’s about to become an ex-cop. Having savagely beaten his...

Hitting theater Christmas 2018 is Paramount Pictures’ Bumblebee starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. Check out the first trailer from the upcoming movie.
There’s a lot going on in this sentimental and nicely cut trailer, including the shot of what appears to be Decepticon Starscream (G1). The voiceover of Bernie Mac as Bobby Bolivia (Transformers 2007) at the start of the trailer was a nice emotional touch.
Transformer fans have been waiting a long time for a stand-alone Bumblebee movie and from this first trailer for the prequel, director Travis Knight looks like he’ll deliver an emotional story of a girl and her Autobot. I can’t wait for December!
Additionally the film’s score is composed by Dario Marianelli. The previous Transformer movies were from composer Steve Jablonsky.

Does your memory go as far back as 2010, or have too many catastrophes and cataclysms blurred your vision? Peter Berg’s tense account of the Bp Gulf Oil Spill debacle covers twenty hours of technological peril, as Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell battle idiotic executives and a badly-cemented oil well that’s fixing to blow sky high — and to turn a massive floating oil rig into a hellish inferno.

Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. There were no real Song snubs, but notably Score has eliminated presumed nominee Arrival,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

I always like when an actor hooks up with the right filmmaker. Often, it can lead to great things. For Mark Wahlberg, teaming up with director Peter Berg a few years ago led to a fantastic film in Lone Survivor. Later this week, they pair up again for Deepwater Horizon, a movie that could well be of some note. Later on this year, they’ll be together again for a more overt awards player in Patriot’s Day, but that’s for another day. Tomorrow, we get their take on the famous oil spill tragedy, focusing on some of the heroism that went down on that day. It could be in line to become an under the radar hit, so watch out. The film is a look at the disaster in April of 2010 on an offshore oil rig. Called the Deepwater Horizon, as you might imagine, the rig would explode...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last several years, you’ve most likely heard of Game of Thrones, the HBO-developed adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s long-running ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series of novels. With the show’s seventh season set to premiere next summer, Game of Thrones shows no signs of slowing down in terms of popularity, even with HBO planning to end it after the eight season.
There’s plenty to love when it comes to Game of Thrones; it’s a wonderfully cast show with an interesting and diverse set of characters, and the attention to detail on display is nothing short of spectacular. It’s also hard to ignore the show’s original music, especially its iconic theme song, which is composed by veteran musician Ramin Djawadi. You’ve probably heard Djawadi’s work before; his music can be...

Starring Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg, Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Deepwater Horizon. This intense, gripping movie is one of the must-see films of 2016!
On April 20th, 2010, the world’s largest man-made disaster occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, Battleship), this harrowing story honours the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.
The film is based upon an article by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul published in The New York Times.
Berg and Wahlberg previously collaborated on the superb 2013 American war film Lone Survivor based on the 2007 book. The movie opened to strong financial success and a generally positive critical response.
Berg’s upcoming film also stars Golden Globe nominee Kurt Russell, Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson.

Hollywood has no shortage of talented composers crafting mostly serviceable tunes for the next young adult literary adaptation or prestige awards tearjerker. But for every auteur like Hans Zimmer and John Williams, you have musical yes men pounding out ominous notes in anticipation of the next horror movie jump scare or making ratatat noise to underscore a superhero chase scene. The film world screams for diverse sounds, but is often left wanting when scores become interchangeable to feed the Hollywood machine. The current film decade is no different from any other in terms of talent, mediocrity, and ingenuity, but could always use a boost from professionals who bring specificity to the table. These five forgotten or diminished artists, each among them with varied yet singular skills, are screaming to be brought back into the Hollywood fold to create their signature sounds.

Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. The event's fifth annual slate of nominees were announced today, and it's a pretty standard assortment of names we've been considering at the forefront of this year's Best Original Score Oscar race, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Hans Zimmer to the ubiquitous Alexandre Desplat. The nominees were chosen by an "Hmma advisory board and selection committee," and winners will be voted upon by "music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, performing rights organizations, film music journalists and music executives," according to the press release. You might raise your eyebrow at something like "Interstellar" being on here when it hasn't been screened for these purposes (or much at all, for that matter). The nominations are also based on hearing music via...

Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Price: DVD $29.99, Blu-ray Combo $42.99, Blu-ray 3D Combo $52.99
Studio: Paramount
Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth installment in Michael Bay’s seemingly unending, mayhem-embracing action-thriller-science fiction franchise, arrives in a handful of configurations, including a four-disc Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and a three-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack featuring more than three hours of content.
From selecting fierce new cars to designing new Transformers characters to constructing elaborately detailed sets, the bonus material truly seems to want to cover it all. It also includes some funny asides (an Angry Birds-inspired trailer!?) and expanded images from Age of Extinction as they were seen in IMAX theaters during the film’s theatrical run in the summer of 2014.
I’m assuming you know all about the film and franchise, so let me enlighten you further with a detailed description of the supplements on the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo editions.

Everyone has been concerned about finding out who'll end up playing Doctor Strange in Marvel's planned adaptation, that the following nugget from San Diego Comic Con seems to have gone unnoticed. During the “Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection” panel -- which also included Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), and Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise) -- Scott Derrickson's Sinister/Deliver us From Evil composer Chris Young stated that he looked forward to working with the director on his next project. Perhaps not aware of the level of secrecy Marvel like to maintain when it comes to their movies, he elaborated when pushed: “Am I gong to do Doctor Strange? Oh, I better had. All I know is, I spoke to [Scott Derrickson] and did a little pitch on the phone and he kind of laughed. He didn’t say, ‘and by the way,...

While Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was busy dodging Doctor Strange rumors during the Dreamworks panel, composer Christopher Young let a few tidbits slip on the upcoming superhero film in the middle of "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection." The panel consisted of six film and television composers - Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise), and Young (Deliver Us From Evil) - discussing their work on various projects. During the conversation, the frequent Scott Derrickson collaborator commented on his possible involvement in the director's 'Marvellous' next project. "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection," moderated by Salem's Shane West, was an entertaining look into the world of scoring film and TV (and video games, which is apparently the most secretive of all mediums), but the highlight was when Young hinted that he might be continuing...

Steve Jablonsky would be among the millions excited about the opening of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” tomorrow if he weren’t so fatigued. “I barely know what day it is,” he says. Since last December, he has worked on the score for Michael Bay’s new “Transformers” film. He’s so tired, he’s not even sure how much music is in the film. “It’s about two hours of music,” he says. “We could figure it out, but we’re all too exhausted.” He has another algorithm: Working on one Michael Bay film is like “scoring two-and-a-half smaller films.” He finished the score in early June, mere days before the movie debuted in Hong Kong. “Some people have told me not to mention how last minute it was, but at the premiere, Michael stood up and said, ‘I finished this film 40 hours ago.’ This one was the craziest film of them all.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Night Visions, their debut full length album, reached #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and had the best first-week sales for a full-length debut by a new rock band in over six years. Paramount has released an exclusive Transformers: Age of Extinction featurette via iTunes Trailers which highlights the bands work on the film, including their song "Battle Cry", their thoughts on the film and what it was like to work with Michael Bay, Steve Jablonsky and Hans Zimmer.
