Cosmic horror and VR screams untapped potential. Which is probably why developer Games by Stitch are looking to capitalize on it with Broken Spectre, which was announced to be heading to the Meta Quest on June 21. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer that debuted at the UploadVR Summer Showcase.
From the mind of Michael Monello, who was producer on The Blair Witch Project, Broken Spectre takes inspiration from the likes of John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft. The game puts players in the role of Casey, whose father disappeared twenty-five years ago while hiking into the inhospitable wilderness of the Coldblood Mountain National Park in northern Canada. When Casey discovers he may still be alive, she sets out into the wilds to find the truth. In doing so, she not only uncovers the story of her father’s disappearance, but also horrors involving mutated experiments, gruesome clues, and bizarre cult rituals.

Poet best known for The Song of the Banana Man who went on to become a prolific playwright and screenwriter
In his groundbreaking poem The Song of the Banana Man, the writer Evan Jones, who has died aged 95, conceived a new form for Caribbean poetry that merged the cadence and language of Jamaican patois with that of standard English.
Written in 1952, broadcast on the BBC’s Caribbean Voices radio programme in 1953 and published in Barbados in Bim magazine in 1954, the poem captured the pride of a Jamaican farmer who works the land during a time when the huge sugar estates owned by foreign concerns were being replaced by locally owned smallholdings, and records the stirrings of an agitating workforce that was heading towards self-determination.

Paarl (South Africa), Jan 17 (Ians) Spinner Bjorn Fortuin claimed 3-14 as he along with Evan Jones (4-32) helped Paarl Royals rip through Durban’s Super Giants and claim a 10-run victory at Boland Park here on Tuesday.
Fortuin ripped through the top order, claiming the wickets of Kyle Mayers (12 off 11), Quinton de Kock (0 off 2 balls), and Dwaine Pretorius (0 off 1 ball) to leave the visitors struggling on 29-3 after 4.3 overs.
Wickets continued to fall just as it seemed the Super Giants were getting themselves back into the game, which stifled their momentum to leave them on 68-4 at the halfway mark.
Heinrich Klaasen (56* off 39 balls) combined with Keshav Maharaj (17 off 10) for a quick-fire 26-run partnership to get the Super Giants back in the contest.
However, Evan Jones bowled a superb 18th over, removing Maharaj and Hardus Viljoen in successive deliveries to leave the Super Giants needing 33 runs off the final 12 balls.

The funniest thing about Seth Rogen and Jason Segel auditioning for the role of Cheddar Bob in the 8 Mile movie with Eminem was that both guys knew that they didn’t stand a chance in hell of getting the role since neither one of them felt right for the part. But they auditioned anyway, and it was about as bad as one can imagine since neither man looks or even sounds the part that was finally taken by Evan Jones. To their credit, both men realized that they weren’t cut out for it, but they made the attempt anyway, which

Seth Rogen had a chance to land the role of Eminem’s sidekick in the 2002 film “8 Mile” but, um, let’s just say the audition didn’t go so well. In fact, Rogen considers the experience, “the weirdest audition I ever did” to this day.
Rogen talks about the ill-fated audition in his new book, “Yearbook,” a collection of anecdotes from the actor’s Canadian upbringing, as well as his misadventures in showbiz. He writes that when he was asked to read for the role of Cheddar Bob — a friend of Eminem’s character, Rabbit — he was told that the film’s casting director was so uncomfortable with the “rappery” quality of the dialogue that actors vying for the role would have to bring a buddy to run lines with instead.
“Which is f—ing nuts,” Rogen said.

Seth Rogen reveals in his new book “Yearbook” (via Insider) that his decision to go out for a supporting role in Eminem’s autobiographical drama “8 Mile” resulted in “by far the weirdest audition I ever did.” The comedian auditioned for the role of Cheddar, the friend of Eminem’s Rabbit. According to Rogen, the “8 Mile” casting director was not comfortable reading lines with the auditioning actor because of how “rappery” the dialogue was. The production asked each actor to bring someone to the audition with them to read lines, so Rogen brought his friend and “Freaks & Geeks” co-star Jason Segel, who also happened to be auditioning for the role of Cheddar.
“We asked our agents if our auditions could be scheduled one right after the other, so that one of us could audition for Cheddar, with the other reading the Rabbit part, and then we’d switch,...

Centurion, March 13 (Ians) Northerns Cricket Union on Friday announced their senior men's and women's teams that will compete in the South African provincial cricket tournaments.
Ahead of the men's and women's senior provincial tournaments in Kimberley and Cape Town respectively, Northerns have selected two very experienced sides.
"This has been a very tough season for so many of our players, with so much uncertainty. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, it took a long time for club cricket to get going," Northerns Cricket Services Manager Charlotte Serwadi said.
The two squads have plenty of experience and ability littered across them, and they are expected to challenge strongly for honours.
"Our women's team will be led by Gandhi Jafta, and she can count on the support of the likes of Robyn Searle, Khanyisile Skhosana and Ricea Coetzer, just to name a few. The team has been preparing diligently, and we are looking...

Is Joseph Losey’s elusive, maudit masterpiece really a masterpiece? Stanley Baker’s foolish lout of a writer ruins his life pursuing the wanton Jeanne Moreau, and it’s hard to tell if she’s punishing him or he’s punishing himself. Losey’s directing skills are in top form on location in Venice and Rome for this absorbing art film. Pi’s overdue and very welcome disc sorts out the multiple release versions for the first time, and in so doing finally makes the show critically accessible. Co-starring (swoon) Virna Lisi and James Villiers.

Myopic Harry Palmer, the great cook, lover and reluctant spy, returns to where his trouble with the British Army began. This time he’s tangled up in a political snarl that might have dire consequences: not only are the Russians involved, ex-Nazis are on the payroll. Israel may have an agent in the field, and not necessarily working in Her Majesty’s interest. Michael Caine’s star quality shines through in this second Harry Palmer spy yarn, filmed on German locations in high style by Guy Hamilton.

“Kinder der Eisigen Dunkelheit!” If those words don’t give you a chill, you may be one of ‘The Damned.’ Joseph Losey’s fascinatingly morbid reflection on atomic terror was too much for England in 1961, wasn’t released in the U.S. for four full years, and then only after being shorn of nine minutes of footage. An ‘impossible’ Cold War scenario puts military authority on the same moral plane as delinquent street thugs. Losey transplants his subversive sensibility to England, and the result is one of the top political sci-fi tales of all time.

King and Country (1964) is a major transitional work for director Joseph Losey and star Dirk Bogarde. Both had been compelled to work in genres that didn't particularly suit them: though Losey had made some strong thrillers, Bogarde had been typed in light comedies from the Rank Organisation or else rather anemic period movies. This Wwi drama offered stronger meat. The story reached the screen circuitously: J.L. Hodson wrote a war memoir from which playwright John Wilson extracted and expanded one narrative, then adapted as a screenplay by regular Losey collaborator Evan Jones. An ordinary soldier, Private Hamp, (Tom Courtenay) is tried for desertion. It's obvious to his defending officer, Bogarde, that Hamp has suffered a breakdown and shouldn't be held responsible for his actions. It's obvious to us, sitting on our 21st century couch a hundred years later, that this is a case of Ptsd: Hamp simply walked away from...

"You're not the bad guys, we are." Is anyone excited to see this? Stx Entertainment has revealed a second, final trailer for the action crime thriller titled Den of Thieves, also known as Criminal Squad in Europe, from writer/director Christian Gudegast. The tale is familiar: a man gets sent to prison and must learn the inner workings and street code of the hard knock life behind bars in order to survive. But in the case of “Shot Caller,” a pretty decent cast is assembled for what looks like an otherwise standard run through this sort of material.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Omari Hardwick, Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, Emory Cohen, Jeffrey Donovan, Evan Jones, Benjamin Bratt, and Holt McCallany star in the film about an innocent man who gets locked up, and soon becomes transformed by his incarceration.

Ben Cresciman's Lynchian, psychological thriller Sun Choke hits VOD and iTunes on August 2 and ScreenAnarchy has a healthy exlcusive to share. In the clip below, horror icon Barabra Crampton (Re-Animator, Road Games) delivers some news to an inflicted Sarah Hagan (Freaks and Geeks) that puts a smile on her face. But are her intentions entirely good? Well, you'll have to see the film, won't you? The emotionally intense and often surreal thriller has drawn early comparisons to Polanski's Repulsion. In her review, ScreenAnarchy's Michele "Izzy" Galgana described it as "a fever dream sprung from the mind of an unreliable narrator..." when she saw it at the Stanley Film Festival. Besides Crampton and Hagan, Sun Choke stars Sara Malakul Lane (Kickboxer: Vengeance), Jim Beoven and Evan Jones. ...

One of four films at this years Frightfest to feature 80s horror icon Barbara Crampton (the others being We Are Still Here, Road Games and Tales of Halloween), Sun Choke stars the wonderful Sarah Hagan, who many will remember from TV shows like Freaks and Geeks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer – where she played one of the potential slayers, Amanda, Here Hagan channels that same sweet, shy persona with an underlying edge she had in Buffy. With Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lake Bell and Jon Bernthal already cast, action drama Shot Caller is continuing to round out its roster. Latest to sign up is Matt Gerald, lately perhaps best known as Daredevil's Melvin Potter. The movie finds Coster-Waldau as a gangster freshly released from the slammer who is “encouraged” (read: ordered) to pull off a major, violent crime with a rival gang on the streets of Southern California. Gerald's role is that of a parole officer with a grudge against some particular gang members. The director is Snitch’s Ric Roman Waugh, who also wrote the screenplay. The ex-stuntman reportedly went undercover as a parole officer to do the necessary prison gang research. That's some hardcore method writing right there.Omari Hardwick, Benjamin Bratt, Emory Cohen, Juan Pablo Raba, Evan Jones and Jeffrey Donovan bulk up the rest of the cast, and production is already underway in...

Joining Jones are Hilary Swank as the pioneer woman Mary Bee, Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, David Dencik, John Lithgow, Tim Blake Nelson, James Spader, William Fichtner, Jesse Plemons, Evan Jones, Hailee Steinfeld, Meryl Streep and Barry Corbin. The film doesn't yet have a domestic distributor, but should it end up at Cannes and be well-received it could very well have one soon enough. Check out the trailer below. sb id="913981" height...

Sun Choke Begins Production: “Janie (Hagan) is just trying to get well. As Janie recovers from a recent violent psychotic break, she’s subjected each day to a bizarre holistic health and wellness regimen designed, and enforced, by her lifelong nanny and caretaker, Irma (Crampton). Janie begins to veer off the road to recovery when she develops an obsession with a young woman, Savannah (Lane), which Janie feels an inexplicable yet profound connection to. The obsession turns increasingly invasive and wedges all three women into an ever-tightening and terrifying struggle for control. Will Janie pull herself back from the precipice of insanity? Or will she go over head-first, taking anyone nearby down with her?

The Minnesota couple's Phoenix wedding would be perfect -- all the friends and relatives gathered, a lovely hotel, a beautiful bride, love in the air.
But the best man, the aptly-named "Lumpy" (Tyler Labine), is out of control -- binge drinking, singing along with every song, a sloppy drunk in every sense.
"Why don't you call it a night?" the groom (Justin Long) begs.
"You're cuttin' off the Best Man?"
No point. Lumpy carries the party to his room, injures himself, staggers out into the desert in the middle of the night and dies.
It's "Best Man Down," but the bride, Kristin (Jess Weixler), is upset -- that her honeymoon, "under a palm tree, in a kaftan, sipping Mai Tais," is ruined. She's a self-medicating ball of stress, and Lumpy's bull-in-a-china-shop stampede through her "big night" has stripped all the sympathy from her. She is irked as all get out...
