Prosecutors dropped charges against Adnan Syed on Tuesday in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee — a case that was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial” — after additional DNA testing further undermined his conviction, his lawyer said.
Emily Witty, a spokeswoman for the city of Baltimore’s state’s attorney’s office, said in an email that her office had dropped its case against Syed and would release further details about its decision later Tuesday.
The state’s attorney’s office announced it would not prosecute the case further based on DNA testing results that excluded Syed, the Maryland Office of the Public Defender said in a statement. The Circuit Court dropped the charges Tuesday, resulting in the dismissal of the criminal case, according to the public defender’s office.

Baltimore prosecutors have dropped their charges against Adnan Syed, subject of the hit 2014 podcast Serial, who was in prison for 23 years for the murder of his high school ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. His conviction was vacated last month, and prosecutors have said they will not pursue another trial.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

A new book presents the history and designs behind such games as Speedball and Xenon. Here's our review of The Bitmap Brothers: Universe.
Games
In movie-making, as in other forms of art, we're used to the notion that some people's work is recognisable at a glance. But what about videogames? Back in the 80s and 90s, the Bitmap Brothers were among the very first design teams to create games so distinctive in their look, sound and feel that you instantly knew it was one of theirs. Having first exploded onto the gaming scene in 1988 with Xenon - a kind of variation on Toaplan's arcade shooter Slapfight, except you could transform into a tank - the Bitmap Brothers set about creating a style that was slick and unspeakably cool.

William Blake: Echoes of Etta
Birdland Jazz Club June 4, 2012 William Blake rocked (and I do mean rocked!) Birdland this past Monday evening with his show Echoes of Etta. With cleverly and unobtrusively contemporized arrangements by Michael Thomas Murray, Mr. Blake served up choice offerings of Etta James songs. Using his high, mighty, and absolutely solid killer blue-eyed soul voice, Mr. Blake knocked the over-produced Etta emulators off the chart, singing with a vocal certainty and emotional sincerity that puts the others to shame. Echoes of Etta was just that: Mr. Blake's skill allowed him to vocally honor Ms. James's artistry, yet still maintain his own identity as the amazing singer he is.
In the spring of 1962, I heard "Something's Got a Hold on Me" on the radio, and ran out to Hollywood's legendary Wallach's Music City at Sunset and Vine to buy the "45" (ah, for the days of listening...

Emmerdale star Andy Walker has spoken candidly about how his life has changed since he lost the use of his limbs. The 33-year-old, who made his debut on the soap earlier this year, was left paralysed from the neck down in 2006 after suffering a diving accident while on holiday in Goa, India. Emmerdale fans have recently seen Walker appear in the role of Steve Kelly, who tried to help regular character Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock) come to terms with life as a tetraplegic. Walker told The Mirror: "Of course it's a negative thing and initially you can't imagine life without moving your arms or legs. There's a lot of adjustment and I've had bad times myself. In the first year I found it hard to get used to having carers. I was impatient, frustrated and I stopped chatting up girls." However, he added: "I've sailed single-handed (more)...
