We could have received another popular cinematic universe if Universal had been successful in kickstarting the Dark Universe. Sadly, 2017’s The Mummy, which was supposed to kickstart the universe involving the classic Universal monsters failed hard and the plans were scrapped. However, the failure was taken very positively by The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman.

Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, was a reboot of the classic Mummy franchise and featured a unique take. It was very different from the iconic Brendan Fraser movies most audiences were familiar with. The critics and the audiences bashed the film for several weak points. Despite being such a massive mess, Kurtzman stated that the film taught him a lot.

Way back in 2002, the excitement for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones diminished somewhat. Late Night with Conan O’Brien sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to mock the fans lined up for the premiere, resulting in a segment in which comedian/puppeteer Robert Smigel launched nerd jokes at the assembly.
Most of the jokes were pretty obvious, including the last bit, in which a man cosplaying as Mr. Spock gained the knack for cursing and walked up and down the line with his middle finger extended. But while the perceived Star Wars vs. Star Trek rivalry has become an old toxic cliché at this point, the fact is that the two franchises don’t actually overlap very much in terms of their core missions. Trek favors optimistic philosophical inquiry and Wars emphasizes fantasy and adventure.

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
At the end of the Star Trek: Discovery season five premiere “Red Directive,” Dr. Kovich finally levels with Captain Burnham. The mission that she and her crew had been on throughout the episode has escalated beyond even Admiral Vance’s clearance, to a level that only someone as deep within the Federation as Kovich can understand.
The mission involves the Progenitors, the source of all humanoid life in the universe. “A few thousand years ago, we’d have found them gods,” says Kovich. But to long-time Trekkies, the Progenitors are also the topic of a remarkable episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As much as we all love Star Trek and its wild world of alien races, the fact remains that the large majority of those aliens are just regular-looking humans with different bits of putty slapped on their foreheads. Romulans, Klingons,...

Since 2017, Star Trek: Discovery has been the flagship of the reborn Trek franchise on TV. Call it “NuTrek,” call it the continuing mission, call it “Star Trek Phase 3.” It doesn’t really matter. The fact is, Disco has been the focal point of new Trek canon since it hit nearly seven years ago. Now, with season 5, Discovery will be ending its journey, leaving Strange New Worlds and the forthcoming Starfleet Academy as the two live-action Trek shows for the foreseeable future.
But about that canon. As executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently said in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, any new Trek film created outside of the streaming TV shows will have to “have to honor all the canon we’ve created since Discovery.” To be clear, this doesn’t just mean outright new events and characters, but all the ways that...

“Star Trek: Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+’s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.
A new season also means new challenges for any Starfleet captain, and IndieWire can exclusively share a new clip from the premiere episode that promises a big one for Burnham. On a recovery mission to secure a mysterious ship, Burnham receives information from her crew about signs of life on board. But as her supervisor Kovich coldly reminds her, her mission requires her to neutralize the potential threat “by any means necessary.”
Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, “Discovery” was a prequel to the groundbreaking original 1966 “Star Trek” series, taking place a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other...

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery.
When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series, and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.
Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early...

When producer Alex Kurtzman launched Star Trek: Discovery nearly a decade ago, the idea of bringing the Star Trek franchise back to TV was a gamble. Back in 2015, the most popular science fiction TV series were either on the SyFy Channel or Doctor Who. After having gone out with a whimper with Enterprise in 2005, could Trek rematerialize as a fully rejuvenated version of itself? Could a mainstream audience be enticed back to the final frontier by yet another new crew? At first, the answer was maybe.
After several delays, Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017 on a newly minted streaming service, CBS All-Access, and the reviews were mixed. After the departure of Bryan Fuller, some critics felt Disco’s first season had a patchwork quality, amounting to a Trek tapestry that was as challenging as it was audacious. Since its debut 1966, Star Trek has been about boldly going forward. And no Star Trek series has gone further forward than Discovery. After a rocky first few seasons set about a decade before The Original Series, Discovery found its place by jumping to the 32nd century, farther into the future than any other entry in the franchise.
As Discovery prepares to end its mission with its fifth and final season, fans might be wondering what’s next for the 32nd century and the TV franchise as a whole. With Strange New Worlds staying in Disco’s original pre-tos era and Lower Decks and Prodigy exploring the period after the Next Generation movie Nemesis, Disco’s exit seems to leave the 32nd century unexplored.
But not so fast, says Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “I think you can expect more of [Discovery’s] 32nd century,” Kurtzman teases in an exclusive interview for...

It may be going on eight years since a "Star Trek" movie has graced the big screen, but the franchise is arguably more fruitful than it has ever been. Several shows are currently on air, including the much-beloved "Strange New Worlds" as well as "Discovery," which is entering its final season, and plenty more "Trek" is on the way. One of the shows fans have to look forward to in the future is "Starfleet Academy," which will offer a glimpse into the world of the famed school for those who want to boldly go where no man has gone before. And it sounds very much like Paramount is sparing no expense with this particular series.
In a recent cover story for Variety about the future of the franchise, it was revealed that "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" will have the largest single set ever created for a "Star Trek" TV show.

Ah, the wonders of the internet. When humanity first discovered electricity, the original trailblazers couldn't have possibly known what they'd eventually unleash upon our species. On one hand, the invention of computers and our entire online ecosystem as we know it means we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. But, on the negative side of the equation, we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. Is anyone else hearing that echo here?
Yeah, let's just put it this way -- in a time when studios are relying on popular franchises and IPs more than anything else, the ever-present specter of, ah, passionate fans with strong opinions looms large over the vast majority of productions. Hyperbolic fandom feedback isn't exactly a new phenomenon, judging by how audiences originally responded to divisive movies like "The Empire Strikes...

The longest-running Star Trek series on Paramount+ is coming to an end with the upcoming fifth season. But of course as tends to be the case when any show ends (especially now), we have to wonder what the chances are of Discovery continuing in any way, whether it’s a revival, a movie, a spinoff, or characters appearing on another Trek show. TV Insider asked just that question when speaking with executive producer Alex Kurtzman ahead of Discovery‘s final episodes. “I think the chances are good,” the EP tells us, but when pressed if there have been any talks about anything, only says, “I’m not going to spoil anything for you.” Of course we immediately think of Mary Wiseman‘s Sylvie Tilly, who left the U.S.S. Discovery and has been teaching at Starfleet Academy but does rejoin her former crew during the final season, given Paramount...

“Star Trek” fans got a couple fascinating details in a March 27 report by Variety on the future of the franchise on Paramount+. The biggest for sure is that the character of Rachel Garrett, the first female captain of the USS Enterprise, will be appearing in the “Section 31” direct-to-Paramount+ movie that’s going to star Michelle Yeoh.
The actress Kacey Rohl will be playing Garrett, who was the captain of the Enterprise-c in the first half of the 24th century and was the subject of one of the most beloved “Next Generation” episodes ever: “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (she was played by Tricia O’Neal in the original episode).
That time-travel episode was about how the Enterprise-c was ripped out of history at a battle with the Romulans where it was supposed to have perished; instead the ship was hurled 22 years into the future where it meets Picard’s Enterprise, the Enterprise-d. As...

Star Trek: Section 31 recently wrapped production, and Variety has the first look at Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou in the upcoming Paramount+ movie. The sprawling cover story (which is well worth a read) also spills on the surprising return of a character who hasn’t been seen in over thirty years.
The Star Trek: Section 31 first look features Michelle Yeoh as the morally dubious Georgiou having a word with someone with a few cybernetic enhancements. The last we saw of the character was on Star Trek: Discovery when she stepped through a portal to somewhere in the past. The exact timeframe remains unknown, but thanks to the addition of one particular Star Trek character, we may have a much better idea.

“I can’t believe I get to play the captain of the Enterprise.”
Anson Mount is sitting across from me on one of the Toronto soundstages for the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which is set in the years when his character, Capt. Christopher Pike, led the legendary Federation starship with a young Spock and Uhura. We’re speaking on the sleek Enterprise bridge, and Mount is recounting the out-of-body experience he had the first time he sat in the iconic captain’s chair. “I had this immediate flashback to playing ‘Star Trek’ as a kid,” he says. “I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.”’”
“Strange New Worlds” is the 12th “Star Trek” TV show since the original series debuted on NBC in 1966, introducing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a hopeful future for humanity.

Approaching the final season of Star Trek: Discovery feels bittersweet. The adventures of this crew have been unique, primarily because of their time-jumping. The future of Star Fleet always had potential, and Discovery tapped into that well. No matter how you feel about Star Trek: Discovery, it’s been a show that wears its heart on its sleeve and opened the door to new viewers in the process. The final season kicked off at SXSW 2024, and the big screen premiere lived up to the venue.
Star Trek: Discovery Plot

His betrayal landed him a rotation with Star Fleet, and he bounces around the galaxy, helping relocate those displaced by the Dma. When an 800-year-old Romulan ship suddenly appears, Kovich (David Cronenberg) joins Discovery to pick up its cargo. However, a pair of salvagers,...

When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. The cancelation of "Star Trek: Discovery" came as a surprise for the cast and crew. It seems that word of the show's cancelation came just as director Jonathan Frakes was filming the last few episodes, and the showrunners had to rush to wrap up the series in a satisfying way, re-writing a few scenes to indicate that this was indeed the end for the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery-A. Early word is that the fifth season of "Discovery" will boast an archaeology-forward, galactic Indiana Jones-style adventure story extrapolated from the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Chase".
Naturally, the cast and crew of "Discovery" are feeling wistful. Sonequa Martin-Green (who plays Captain Burnham), Wilson Cruz (who plays Dr. Culber), and executive producer Alex Kurtzman spoke at this year's SXSW -- which /Film attended -- and they were given a moment to ensure that the series was given a proper sendoff.

"Star Trek" might feel like a property at the peak of its powers these days, but things were very different as recently as 2017. "Star Trek Beyond" had just wrapped up the trilogy of "Kelvin-verse" movies on the cinematic side of the equation, but Trekkies continued to wait for the franchise's grand return to its small-screen roots. Not since the end of "Enterprise" in 2005 had fans been able to enjoy "Trek" television, an over decade-long gap rivaled only by the 13 years between "The Animated Series" and "The Next Generation." Then, "Discovery" arrived on the scene, kickstarting this current era that has since flourished into a genuine Golden Age with multiple shows streaming concurrently.

When showrunner Michelle Paradise and co-creator Alex Kurtzman sat down to begin planning what would ultimately become the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” they had one big goal: “Bigger and bolder,” of course, Paradise said.
They didn’t originally know the program would be coming to an end, but they still wanted to take some big swings when it came to keeping the story fresh for Season 5 — and that means compelling villains.
“They’re kind of like the Bonnie and Clyde of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” Kurtzman said to IndieWire about the new baddies that fans will meet in the premiere episode. “But like all great villains, they have a sympathetic story. You know the old adage: The villain is the hero of their own story. That’s very true for them, and I think ultimately you’ll love them as much as you’ll see them as the villain.

Quick, who’s the most important person in Star Trek? Jim Kirk? Jean-Luc Picard? Morn?
No, no, and maybe, but not who we had in mind. The most important person in Star Trek is the character who has appeared in every series, except The Original Series: William T. Riker, the character immortalized by Jonathan Frakes.
Of course, Frakes played Commander Riker for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His twin/clone/variant Thomas Riker showed up as a Maquis agent on Deep Space Nine, while Q shenanigans brought Will to the Delta Quadrant on Voyager. No one, not even Frakes, likes Riker’s appearance with Troi in the finale of Enterprise. But everyone loved Riker and Troi’s vocal appearances on Lower Decks. And, yes, it takes some fudging, but Star Trek: Very Short Treks allowed Riker to blast his trombone with the Star Trek: The Animated Series crew,...

In 2017, the venerable “Star Trek” science fiction franchise had gone a full twelve years without a new series, after Upn aired the series finale of “Enterprise” in 2005. That changed when Paramount released “Star Trek: Discovery” on their CBS All Access (since rebranded to Paramount+) streamer, kicking off a new era for the IP.
Now, seven years later, the series is set to take its own bow. The fifth and last season of “Discovery” is set to premiere this April, and Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the series’ swan song.

Paramount+ has officially confirmed the release date for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, with the first two episodes of the final season set to premiere on the streaming service on April 4th.
