MGM has released the official trailer for Zach Braff’s latest directorial effort, “A Good Person,” which stars “Midsommar” actor Florence Pugh opposite Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, Molly Shannon and Morgan Freeman. The upcoming drama sees Pugh transform into Allison, a traumatized car crash survivor recovering from opioid addiction. Years after the accident, Allison begins to confront her past through an unlikely friendship with the father of her late fiancé.
Braff and Pugh previously worked together on Braff’s 2019 short film “In the Time It Takes to Get There,” where Pugh plays the 18th century equivalent of a social media influencer. Following their collaboration, the two began a relationship.
“The movie that we made together genuinely was probably one of my most favourite experiences,” Pugh said in the interview. “It felt like a very natural and easy thing to do.”
Braff is best known for playing the recurring role of J.

The third incarnation of the venerable story of a blended family of twelve, Cheaper by the Dozen, starring Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union as the heads of house, plays out as predictably as one might expect heading into it, but there is an earnestness to the family dynamic at work that makes the whole business worthwhile once all is said and done.
Adapted from the novel by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, the film tells the tale of a family, the Bakers, as they navigate the waters of their now wildly frenetic life as they try to keep their family business – an all-day breakfast restaurant – running smoothly.
Of course, this is easier said than done as there are numerous obstacles to the family’s enduring happiness, the grandest of which is a move to a sleek, gated community that portends a higher station in life for the...

The remake of the 2003 film – itself a remake – follows the Bakers, a mixed family of 12, headed by Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union
It feels very Disney to have Cheaper by the Dozen premiering on the company’s streaming service, Disney+, in 2022. The family film is the remake of a remake – the 2022 version puts a new spin on the 2003 movie of the same name, which updated the 1950 movie based on the the semi-autobiographical novel by siblings Frank Butler Gilbreth Jr and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. It’s also potent nostalgia bait for young millennial parents; the 2003 version, starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt as the parents of 12 rowdy children, was a reliable (if tepidly reviewed) family-friendly staple of the 2000s whose brood contained a bevy of millennial-beloved stars – Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo, Tom Welling, Alyson Stoner.

Families are like branches on a tree. They grow in different directions, yet their trunk and roots keep them together as one. But for Paul and Zoey Baker in Gail Lerner's new remake of "Cheaper By The Dozen," their family tree might as well be a small forest. Under one roof, this family has two parents, nine kids, one cousin, and two adorable dogs. On top of that, there's an ex-wife and an ex-husband who do their best to stay as involved as possible as well. With all that going on, Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union's characters certainly have their hands full...

What began as an autobiographical lark for a brother and sister scribbling down stories about growing up in a radical family of an unconventional size has turned into the basis for Hollywood’s decades-long obsession with their familial farces. The portrait of charming, controlled chaos within Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey’s novel “Cheaper by the Dozen” has been adapted for the screen twice before, produced during two drastically different eras. Each version retained the name but featured varying outcomes for the characters, with the 1950s iteration featuring a not-so-plucky ending compared to its more current counterpart in 2003. Yet the resonant themes, centered on an unsinkable family’s resilience during trying times, are what tie them together.

A joyless exercise in IP mining, “Cheaper by the Dozen” is all the more depressing for its glimpses of unfulfilled potential.
No one really needed to follow up a 2005 sequel of a 2003 remake of a 1950 adaptation of a 1948 autobiographical novel. But if you’re going to attempt to bring this story into the present day, you couldn’t ask for a better team than director Gail Lerner and writers Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry (“Grown-ish”). And who wouldn’t want to see a charmingly practical Gabrielle Union reign over lots of cute kids and a loving — if lackluster — husband played by Zach Braff?
Other than Braff, who isn’t actually supposed to be playing lackluster, it’s hard to say where everything went wrong. Lerner, Barris, and Henry all work primarily in TV, but that shouldn’t have been an unscalable obstacle. Barris co-wrote 2017’s raucous “Girls Trip,” and...

One need only peek at advertisements for Disney’s new Cheaper by the Dozen to glean that this is not a paint-by-the-numbers reboot of a classic franchise.
Led by Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union, the Gail Lerner-directed film features a multicultural cast of actors who teamed to tell the story of the blended Baker family living, laughing and navigating all the challenges that come with life in present-day Los Angeles. Upon closer examination, the script, from Kenya Barris, Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry and Craig Titley, reveals how the creative team met those challenges head-on through scenes tackling racism, racial bias, depression, bullying and addiction, to name only a few.
“We’re blended racially, culturally, with a variety of different abilities,” Union told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet ahead of the world premiere at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre. “We’ve got co-parenting. We...

As we limp into the third year of the pandemic, placating platitudes like “nothing is ever set in stone” continue to be the order of the day, as does tremendous flexibility when it comes to something relatively minor like, oh, when your next favorite movie is coming out. Despite the unpredictability of 2020 and 2021, female filmmakers continue to make great strides, from winning the top awards at the majority of last year’s biggest festivals, notching only the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar (Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”), and churning out big-time box office hits.

Visitors to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., usually start their tour in the belly of the facility, where exhibits drive home the horrifying efficiency with which millions of African people were snatched from their homeland and sold into slavery. As the tour continues upward through the building, visitors traverse centuries of the Black experience in America until they reach an exhibit reflecting the present day.

Editors Note: Earlier this week, Prentice Penny, showrunner of HBO’s Insecure, wrote a guest column this week for Deadline reflecting on the recent string of high-profile comedy series pulling older episodes featuring blackface scenes. In it, he wrote about Hollywood’s “sliding scale” that made it possible for so many episodes of so many series to make it through all layers of approval to the air with the offensive material. He called upon peers to “be uncomfortable and accountable,” urging them to make 60% of their shows’ staffs on every level people of color. The column received a strong response and opened a conversation. After we published it, black-ish executive producer Gail Lerner, a veteran comedy writer-producer and friend of Penny’s, reached out with her own response, sharing her internal struggle over an old TV episode featuring a blackface-related gag she was involved with, while offering her own plan...

Having given many Americans their first exposure to the true significance of Juneteenth back in 2017, Black-ish this season continued to spotlight hard truths around race and wealth – sometimes from a very personal perspective.
“I then came back with the story of one family trying to out-black the other black family on the vacation,” star Anthony Anderson said during Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television event, discussing the partial inspiration for the Kenya Barris-created show’s writers for Season 6’s “Kid Life Crisis” episode.
“There’s always another door you can enter when you come into a room someplace,” the multiple Emmy nominee said of the competition of wealth and access that African American families too often find themselves forced into in predominantly white environments, like luxury holidays.
“Those are the things that I pitch and try to come up with throughout the season,” he said. “It’s all based on personal experiences,...

The Johnsons have a bright future ahead of them at ABC.
Black-ish has been renewed for a sixth season. The network confirmed on Thursday it was bringing the critically acclaimed and award-winning comedy series back for the 2019-20 TV season.
Additionally, the Black-ish universe will be growing, once again.
ABC has also placed a series order for Mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson's experience of growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s.
A backdoor pilot for the series, titled "Becoming Bow," was originally slated to air May 7, but the episode will now be held for next season, presumably to air as part of the first season of the spinoff.

The “Black-ish” universe is expanding again.
In addition to renewing the family comedy for a sixth season, ABC has also picked up the Bow-centric prequel series, the network announced on Thursday. Titled “Mixed-ish,” the new comedy is set in the 1980s and stars Arica Himmel as a young version of Rainbow Johnson, the character played by Tracee Ellis Ross in the flagship comedy.
Per ABC, the new series will see Rainbow Johnson recount “her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white.

The Johnsons will be back for another go-round. ABC has picked up a sixth season of its hit comedy series black-ish for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, the network has given an early season order to mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
The black-ish renewal is not a surprise for the praised single-camera comedy centered on an affluent African-American family struggling to raise their kids in the largely white culture of well-to-do suburbia. Also not surprising was the pickup for mixed-ish, which had emerged as ABC’s strongest comedy pilot.
ABC had intended to air a “Becoming Bow” episode of black-ish on May 7, which could have become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. With the mixed-ish series order, that episode will now be held for next season, ABC says. Bless This Mess, “The Predators...

ABC has renewed “Black-ish” for a sixth season and has also put out a series order for a prequel to the show titled “Mixed-ish.”
The spinoff series, which has been in development since February, focuses on the experience of Tracee Ellis Ross’s character, Rainbow Johnson, growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
“Black-ish” centers on the Johnsons, an affluent black family in a predominantly white neighborhood. Parents Andre “Dre” (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow are trying to raise their kids, who are growing up in very different worlds than they did, to have the right values and appreciate their roots.
Season 5 of show has been posting solid ratings to-date, with an Live+Same Day rating of 0.80 in the key 18-49 demographic, and an average of 3.33 million viewers per episode.

What would the characters of "Girls" look like in 40 years?
That's the premise of "Girls Season 38," a video parody written and directed by Gail Lerner. Hannah, played by "SNL" alum Laraine Newman, is still broke, living with Marnie and looking for something to write about. "Am I too old to be wearing rompers and eating street lobster and compulsively hooking up with random guys?" she asks.
In the clip we see that little has changed over the last four decades -- Marnie is still pining over Charlie, Jessa seems completely unfazed by everything (including her serious health issues) and Shoshanna is obsessing over the smallest details of her new relationship.
Newman, who shared the video in a blog for the Huffington Post this week, described herself as a huge fan of the show and Lena Dunham. She revealed that she channeled her inner Lena when approaching this project: "I am...

John Quaintance and David Feeney have been elevated to executive producers and co-showrunners on Fox‘s freshman comedy Ben And Kate. They will co-run the series with a creator/executive producer Dana Fox. They succeed Garrett Donovan and Neil Goldman, who departed over a month ago. Gail Lerner, who came on board following Donovan and Goldman’s exit to lend senior-level support several days a week, is staying on. Ben And Kate is the lowest-rated member of Fox’s new Tuesday comedy block. It launched to mostly positive reviews and landed a six-episode back order from the network, bringing its freshman season to 19 episodes. CAA-repped Quaintance previously worked on Notes From The Underbelly, Perfect Couples and Whitney. Feeney’s series credits include According To Jim and 2 Broke Girls. He’s with UTA.

Fox brass have said they would be patient with the network’s new Tuesday comedy block, and they are proving it today with back orders to modestly-rated freshman series The Mindy Project and Ben And Kate. In its second outing, the workplace comedy, which gets a sizable DVR bump, logged a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating in Live+same day. Dana Fox’s Ben And Kate has received a six-episode back order. It most recently posted a 1.6 demo rating at 8:30 Pm. Fox has new comedy The Goodwin Games on tap for midseason, which was part of the reason for Ben And Kate‘s six-episode order. Chicago – NBC revealed their Fall schedule today and there were multiple surprises including comedies moving to Tuesday and Friday nights (we were wondering where all of the sitcoms would go) and a Fall cycle of the hit singing show “The Voice.” Other major news is that “Smash” is being held for mid-season. The network also revealed that six new shows — two dramas, four comedies — will premiere in the Fall.
The big news for comedy fans is that Thursdays have been tinkered with again as the final season of “30 Rock” will kick off the night at 7pm Cst, followed by “Up All Night,” “The Office,” and “Parks and Recreation.” In the 9pm Cst timeslot that was the kiss of death last season with “Prime Suspect,” “The Firm,” and “Awake,” the network has given up and will air the low-rated but inexpensive “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
The Eye continued its reign as the #1-rated network this past season. Its procedurals (NCIS, CSI, Criminal Minds, Mentalist) dominate the marketplace, about half its sitcoms (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) are strong performers, and though it only launched four shows last Fall it turned two of them (Good Wife, NCIS: La) into major hits.
The network isn't resting on its laurels though as this year it launches three dramas and two comedies in the Fall, and the high-profile "Criminal Minds" spin-off mid-season. As a result some long running dramas like "Cold Case," "Ghost Whisperer" and "Numb3rs" along with its more recent and lesser performing sitcoms have all been given the axe.

It has become part of TV development lore: David E. Kelley spends his days fishing and writing in Northern California until he calls his reps and his producing studio, Warner Bros. TV, to tell them he has a pilot script ready.
The latest spec from "The Practice" creator, the legal drama "Kindreds," quietly was taken to networks this month. It sparked a bidding war before landing at NBC during a pilot-pickup season in which specs are hotter than ever before.
NBC's pilot orders for spec scripts include "Kindreds" and J.J. Abrams' "Undercovers," both from Wbtv, as well as "The Event," by writer Nick Wauters, which was reworked through Ums.
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas' comedy spec "Livin' on a Prayer," from 20th TV, received a green light from CBS in a rich pre-emptive deal. It joins two other 20th TV comedy specs-turned-pilots: "Traffic Light," by "Wedding Crashers" co-writer Bob Fisher,...

The most buzzed-about new comedies of the fall, ABC's "Modern Family" and NBC's "Community," are single-camera shows. And all major comedy-series Emmys for the past two years have gone to single-camera shows.
But multicamera comedies are hotter than they have been in years. They dominated early pitch sales in the summer, sparking heated bidding and landing major commitments.
Of the comedy projects with production commitments so far this season, only Greg Garcia's "Keep Hope Alive" at Fox is single-camera. A number of production commitments have gone to multicamera projects, including Mark Brazill's "The Rednecks & Romeos" at Fox, Matt Tarses' "True Love" at CBS and Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith's "18 Years" at ABC, with several more pending.
"Multicamera comedy is absolutely making a comeback this development season," said Glenn Adilman, head of comedy at Sony TV, which is behind a number of high-profile new multicamera projects, including "True Love" and "18 Years.
