Grimmfest keep on delivering the goods despite a worldwide pandemic. Their latest treat comes along with the May Bank Holiday and includes Cody Calahan’s latest movie Vicious Fun.
Set in the eighties, the crazy story has us follow a horror movie journalist (instantly relatable to a big chunk of this films audience!) who somehow ends up in a self-help group for serial killers. When his attempts at blending in don’t go to plan he has to work out a way to survive… I’m glad the word fun is in the title of this movie. It is often something that people seem to think is a less than positive way of describing films. But I love films that are fun and it is a perfect description here.

To celebrate the 28th September digital release of Becky we’re giving away an iTunes voucher.
Slickly and smartly directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion (the duo behind cult horror comedy Cooties), this grisly cross between Home Alone and Last House on the Left features a fantastic lead performance from from Lulu Wilson who turns from a sulky teen into pint-sized Rambo. Becky is a no-nonsense thriller, propelled by a pulsing score, and featuring comedy A-listers Joel McHale (Community) and Kevin James like you’ve never seen them before. With sterling support from Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale) and hulking former pro wrestler Robert Maillet, Becky is a trip you don’t want to miss.

For this review round-up installment, this writer is diving into a pair of films that celebrate two fearsome females in very unique ways: Becky from directing duo Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, and Josephine Decker’s Shirley, which pulls back the curtain on the life of acclaimed writer Shirley Jackson. These films couldn’t be any more different from each other, and I highly recommend seeking out both of them just as soon as you can.

Exclusive: From what we’ve been able to pull together, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour continues to reign with $300K in its ninth weekend at the domestic box office from a theatrical marketplace that remains largely shut down coast to coast.
Our sources believe that the sequel has made slightly more than $3M from theatrical ticket sales since Easter weekend outside of the $100M-plus from the pic’s PVOD release.
Deadline exclusively heard some hopeful news Monday, with sources telling us that June 12 is being eyed as the big reopening date for cinemas in California. The state’s Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to reveal plans soon.
Of the 5,500 theaters in the U.S., various sources have provided different figures to us as to exactly how many have reopened. Seven hundred cinemas is about the average we hear, with drive-ins repping 43% of that figure. In regard to the most theaters open by territory,...

There should be special place in movie hell for lazy filmmakers who get off showing adults terrorizing children and animals. Is there an easier or cheaper way to jolt an audience? We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.
The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.
“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.

Comedians going dark can sometimes lead to a real cinematic discovery. They don’t even need to necessarily go dark, but to show another side of themselves is often a joy to witness. Look no further than Adam Sandler’s revelatory turn last year in Uncut Gems, continuing what he’s been able to show in work like Punch Drunk Love. Now, Sandler’s pal Kevin James takes a crack at it in the thriller Becky, a gory gender swapped take on material covered far lighter in Home Alone. James is certainly chillingly evil here, but the mean streak, especially in relation to dogs, found here ends up soiling the picture. The movie is a thriller, beginning with some father/daughter drama. Becky (Lulu Wilson) is headed to her family’s lake house with her father Jeff (Joel McHale) and their two dogs, sometime after her mother/his wife has passed away.

"You're clearly a special girl!" Quiver Distribution has released a new red band trailer for Becky, the latest from filmmaking team Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion. A teenager's weekend at a lake house with her father takes a turn for the worse when a group of convicts wreaks havoc on their lives. Lulu Wilson stars as the titular Becky, who decides to fight back against the criminals in her own way and save her family. Kevin James also co-stars as one of the ruthless neo-Nazi thugs. The cast includes Joel McHale, Amanda Brugel, Robert Maillet, and Ryan McDonald. The original trailer from last month was pretty good, this one looks even better. I really, really hope the film is as good as it seems from these trailers, no more let downs please. The hand-drawn graphics in this new trailer are a great addition, I dig it. Thirteen can be a petulant age, but hell hath no fury like the pubescent heroine of “Becky,” who has the ill luck to confront a gang of escaped cons — though that’s definitely worse luck for them, as it turns out. Offering fairly brutal action on the verge of black comedy, this indie thriller from the directorial duo of Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott is lean, mean, nasty fun that will appeal to genre fans with hard-edged tastes. It may be less appealing to surprised fans of comedian Kevin James, who’s a long way from “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” as the sadistic chief villain here. Selected for Tribeca this year, the feature is instead going straight to digital and on demand (plus available theatrical venues) on June 5.

The 2020 summer movie season is one like never before. With social distancing and shelter-in-place regulations shutting down theaters across the world, the film industry is in uncharted waters. What was set up to be a season for studios to unleash expensive and highly anticipated tentpoles has been truncated and diminished by frequent calendar adjustments and looming uncertainty.
Many of the films that were poised to be the biggest hits of the summer have been pushed back. Marvel’s “Black Widow,” Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman 1984” have all staked out new release dates for later this year. Some movies, such as Universal’s “F9” and Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” have been delayed as far as 2021.
The shutdown has also led studios to experiment with digital and video-on-demand (VOD) releases for films that were originally scheduled to debut in theaters. “The King of Staten Island,” “Artemis Fowl...

After making a career in sitcoms and comedies, Kevin James is traveling down a darker path. The King of Queens and Paul Blart actor is playing a neo-Nazi who terrorizes a family in the search for a certain item. Coming from Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the directing duo behind Cooties and Bushwick), the first trailer has now landed ahead of a June digital release.
We’ve seen the likes of Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, and more pivot to darker material, and here James seems to be strictly chewing the horror-thriller scenery. Also starring Lulu Wilson, Amanda Brugel, Robert Maillet and Joel McHale, see the trailer below.

Although he may be best known as Doug Heffernan in The King of Queens or a diehard mall cop in the Paul Blart movies, Kevin James plays an altogether vicious villain in the home invasion thriller Becky. Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (the filmmakers behind Cooties and Bushwick), Becky is coming to VOD and Digital on June 5th, and the film's trailer offers a look at James' intense character that's a far cry from his comedic roles.

Aside from horror, I've watched a lot of sitcoms over the years, and as someone who has seen The King of Queens in its entirety, I'm genuinely curious to see Kevin James play what is being described as a "merciless" villain in the upcoming home invasion movie Becky. Turner Latin America’s new English-language film label Particular Crowd has kicked off its partnership with Canadian shingles Breakthrough Entertainment and Black Fawn Films with horror-comedy “Vicious Fun,” now in post.
“An outrageous mash-up of dread and humor, ‘Vicious Fun’ lives up to its title,” said Craig McGillivray, Breakthrough Entertainment’s VP of distribution. “We are thrilled to have Turner Latin America’s new movie banner, Particular Crowd, as a partner on this film, and look forward to sharing the howls and horrors we’ve created together,” he added.
“Vicious Fun” tracks Joel, a mordant 1980s film critic for a national horror magazine, who finds himself ensnared in a self-help group for serial killers. To avoid becoming the next victim, Joel tries to blend in with the murderous pack.

Short film almost always equals low budget. Now, this is of course not a problem, but I point it out when talking about The Shipment because it either spends a low budget extremely well or it has a much bigger budget than any short I have watched before [this was actually made for $1million! - Editor Phil].
I say this because of how visually stunning The Shipment is. I was not expecting it to look this great. The spaceships look futuristic, vast and stylish, the characters (through practical effects and CGI I believe) look like something out of a new Star Wars movie and the world which it is all surrounded by looks nothing short of jaw-dropping! The Shipment really does need to be seen to believed. I could easily assume that the budget for the CGI effects alone took up the majority of this films budget.

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.
Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

"Why are you doing this?" "I like it." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a stylistic action thriller film titled Polar, the latest film by a Swedish filmmaker named Jonas Åkerlund, who also directed the black metal film Lords of Chaos - which is also getting released early this year. Polar stars Mads Mikkelsen as a master assassin who comes out of retirement to contend with a group of young hit men. The cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, Ruby O. Fee, Fei Ren, Anthony Grant, Josh Cruddas, Robert Maillet, Julian Richings, Johnny Knoxville and Richard Dreyfuss. It's based on the Dark Horse graphic novel "Polar: Came from the Cold" written by Victor Santos. This looks super stylish and comic booky, with tons of cheesy action scenes. Might be fun, but I don't think it's going to be any good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jonas Åkerlund's Polar,...

It’s a Mads, Mads world. Netflix has released the trailer for its Mads Mikkelsen-Vanessa Hudgens movie “Polar,” and lots of people who lived by the gun are going to die by the gun.
In the action flick, the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla — a.k.a. The Black Kaiser (Mikkelsen) — is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm, per the streaming service’s official description. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.
Also, Vizla’s pending $8 million pension seems like a pretty good (company) reason to off the hard-to-off dude.

Some films are just crap, but Septic Man is literally about it. In the first few minutes you may get to see a lot of human waste, but if truth be told if the movie has a bigger problem than that… it may be slightly constipated.
Jack (Jason David Brown) is a sewage worker who is known to be good at his job. When government official Phil Prosser (Julian Richings) gives him an offer he can’t (or isn’t) allowed to refuse he finds himself investigating problems in the city water system which are leading to a plague of diseases, even death. When he finds the source though he finds himself trapped in the water treatment facility at the mercy of two strange brothers intent on killing him.

A long-standing cultural paranoia has come to pass amid The Strain’s strigoi siege: A popular goth-rocker is, in fact, an evil demon seeking to insidiously infect the minds and hearts of his followers. That would be the show’s ostensible Marilyn Manson stand-in, Bolivar, whom the Master has selected as his latest vessel. During a showdown with Quinlan, the newly rejuvenated lord of darkness explains that he selected Gabe on account of his loyalty. Although it’d suffice perfectly fine if Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan kept Bolivar around purely to achieve the aforementioned satire. Either way, the Master 2.0 looks pretty badass, so it’s an upgrade for both him and the host. (We will miss you, Robert Maillet.)At the Throggs Neck warehouse that’s currently doubling as a feeler nursery, the Master and Eichhorst find themselves staring down Setrakian and Quinlan several yards away. It’s...

Once Richard Sammel completes his role as Nazi turned vampire Thomas Eichhorst on The Strain, he’d like to display his lighter side on a series like Suits. Seriously. Talking on the phone from his home in Paris, the 53-year-old German-born silver fox makes a point to highlight more comedic work he’s done on stage and screen. And in conversation, he’s markedly looser and more cerebral than his tightly wound, ultimately corrupted Strain alter ego. Hollywood remaking a foreign film is far from a new phenomenon, and adaption in this manner has yielded some truly great films. We have seen such successes like Seven Samurai transformed into The Magnificent Seven, and Infernal Affairs altered into The Departed.
On the other hand, there are movies like Brick Mansions. This remake of the Luc Besson / Pierre Morel French parkour action fest District B13 has much in common with the original including plot structure, action sequences, and even shares one of the co-leads. What it lacks is energy, craftsmanship, and originality. Fans of the original have little reason to examine this new take, and those coming in fresh will also find it difficult enjoy this tired dud of an action movie.
