According to Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese is the true godfather of modern cinema.
Coppola took to Instagram to call his “longtime friend” Scorsese the “world’s greatest living filmmaker” while including the trailer for Scorsese’s upcoming epic “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“My longtime friend Martin Scorsese has a new film coming out this month, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,'” Coppola captioned. “He is a wonderful person and the world’s greatest living filmmaker. His new film delivers on every level.”
“Killers of the Flower Moon” stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro as swindlers in 1920s Oklahoma, preying on the oil reserves of the Osage Nation. Lily Gladstone stars as DiCaprio’s onscreen wife.
Meanwhile, Coppola recently wrapped production on self-funded “Megalopolis” with Adam Driver, Talia Shire, Shia Labeouf, and Dustin Hoffman.

This post contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 6, "Far, Far Away."
"Ahsoka" is delving into the origins of one of the most interesting factions in the "Star Wars" galaxy: the Dathmiri. This race of space witches made their first live-action appearance in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" through the presence of Darth Maul, a Nightbrother of Dathomir who became the Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) and was enjoying a nice successful career in the dark side until he was rudely cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi. (We'll get back to Maul in a moment.)
Episode 6, "Far, Far Away," reveals that the Dathmiri actually came to that galaxy far, far away from another galaxy far, far away. Their true home is Peridea, a grim planet whose rings are made up of the disintegrating bones of dead star whales. Peridea is the other end of the purrgils' migration path, and the...

There are literally hundreds of films and TV shows about or featuring King Arthur going back well over a century – there are silent films, musicals, animated films, comedies, dramas. You name it, there is a King-Arthur-themed version of it. There are not a small number of “Best of…” lists floating around the internet as well. But how do you know which of the recommendations is really going to scratch your King Arthur-shaped itch?
MGM+’s new series about King Arthur, The Winter King, is a combination of gritty historical fiction and “low” fantasy. It is also fairly grim and violent. But there are lots of different ways to tell a story about King Arthur and his knights, with or without round table, Merlin, the Lady of the Lake and so on. Here, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite films and TV shows about or featuring King Arthur,...

For years, the idea that Martin Scorsese could have directed "The Godfather Part II" has been a part of the filmmaker's sprawling lore, a fact so fun that sharing it with your gangster film buff friends is all but guaranteed to make them temporarily short-circuit when considering the possibilities. What would Scorsese's take on the story of Michael Corleone look like? Would the filmmaker's spin on Mario Puzo's world be a "Goodfellas"-level classic, still considered among the best movies of all time as Francis Ford Coppola's take was? It turns out, Scorsese himself doesn't think so.
The filmmaker recently spoke with Deadline about his upcoming film "Killers of the Flower Moon," a movie about a series of historical Osage Nation murders that's set to be a crime epic in its own right. During the conversation, the topic of Scorsese's potential involvement in "The Godfather Part II" came up,...

Director JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions, will kick off a new live-action TV series for HBO Max, based on Vertigo Comics "Madame X" (aka "Madame Xanadu"), a character identified with 'Nimue', a 'sorceress' from 'Arthurian' mythology made popular by Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur":
"..'Nimue Inwudu' is the youngest sister of 'Morgana' (aka 'Morgaine Le Fay') and 'Vivienne', the 'Lady of the Lake'. The sisters are descendants of the 'Elder Folk', survivors of 'Atlantis' who evolved into the race known as the 'Homo magi'.
"She cast an imprisoning spell on her former lover 'Merlin', blaming him for manipulating 'Camelot' and the course of history for his own gain. Merlin has the last laugh, though, as he succeeds in stripping her magic away from her, forcing her to use potions to maintain her immortality.

Make It Reign: Interview with King Arthur's Charlie Hunnam Make It Reign: Interview with King Arthur's Charlie Hunnam Melissa Sheasgreen5/11/2017 10:01:00 Am
Fresh off the stage at the legendary Hall H at San Diego’s ComicCon, where he spoke in front of thousands of fans, Charlie Hunnam moves on to a panel of journalists for a mini press conference in a huge hotel ballroom before making his way over to the other side of the room for our one-on-one interview. Despite the intense schedule, he seems charming. Just as we’d hoped.
Hunnam — best known for TV roles on Sons of Anarchy and Queer as Folk and films like Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak — stars as King Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, director Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of the classic tale.
But with Ritchie at the helm, it’s clear this will be anything but a classic retelling.

The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table receives its most impressive screen treatment in Excalibur, from visionary director John Boorman (Deliverance, Hope and Glory).
All the elements of Sir Thomas Malory’s classic Le Morte Darthur are here: Arthur (Nigel Terry) removing the sword Excalibur from the stone; the Round Table’s noble birth and tragic decline; the heroic attempts to recover the Holy Grail; and the shifting balance of power between wily wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson) and evil sorceress Morgana (Helen Mirren).
With Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson in notable early screen roles, Excalibur serves up “one lush, enraptured scene after another.” (The New Yorker)

As reported back in January, Warner Bros. have finally hit on an idea for King Arthur that they like. Word that Guy Ritchie has returned to the project, having left it once before, is this morning thoroughly borne out by the fact that his King Arthur now has a release date. Warners have nabbed the otherwise unoccupied tentpole summer slot of July 22, 2016, proving by divine providence (or at least studio edict) that Guy Ritchie is to carry Excalibur.Back in 2010 when he was working on it before, Ritchie's thrust was thought to be very much based on Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, the 15th Century text that assembled most of the popular tales of Arthur (the Knights of the Round Table, the Holy Grail, Merlin, Gareth, Lancelot and Guinevere, Arthur's battles with Rome, Tristan and Isolde and so on) into a single narrative. The implication was that, in contrast...

Normally, I’m not a TV kind of person. I prefer books, and the longer the better! True storytelling is what I love, and in a time where narrative culture is more and more determined by the length of a Twitter message, the spinning of a grand old-fashioned tale has become a rare thing on television. Such a rare exception was the BBC series Merlin – until it was announced late in 2012 that the show wouldn’t be continued after the end of series five. When I read that in an interview, my first thought was that it seemed quite a daunting task, if not even an impossible one, to tie up all the loose threads that were glaringly left hanging about...

Sword And Sorcery is casting a powerful spell on popular culture again.
That's largely due to the Camelot and Game of Thrones series, as well as the BBC's Merlin (which returns for a fourth run later this year) and a number of King Arthur projects circulating in Hollywood.
Abaddon Books is promising we can now find out why they call it The Dark Ages.
Tomorrow it publishes Malory's Knights of Albion: The Savage Knight, by Paul Lewis.
It's the second book in the Malory's Knights of Albion 'shared world' series, billed as "a new take on the well-known sub-genre, filled with savagery and knights who live and die by their bloodied swords."
In this new novel, Sir Dodinal the Savage is burdened with a terrible rage and turns his back on Camelot to find peace in a quiet Welsh village. But even here there is none.

The story of King Arthur can definitely be described as enduring. Rooted in the Dark Ages, it was shifted into the Middle Ages (with all the associated knights in armour, chivalry and damsels) by Sir Thomas Malory's classic 15th century work Le Morte d'Arthur.
With all the myth and mystery surrounding this semi-historical tale, not to mention its ingredients of love, power and betrayal, it provides rich material for literature, TV and film.

In 2011, Starz will be giving its audiences a taste of historical drama with Camelot, a wholly original approach to the timeless Arthurian legend, from the creative team behind such landmark series as The Tudors, Life on Mars and Torchwood, as well as critically acclaimed film The Departed and upcoming The Tourist. The series will be based on Thomas Malory’s 15th century book,” Le Morte d’Arthur” – still considered the definitive work on the subject. However, “Camelot” will employ a modern telling of the Arthur legends that is relatable to contemporary audiences. “The story of Arthur isn’t history, it’s mythology, and Camelot isn’t a place but an idea of hope that has resonated intensely at different times throughout history,” Starz, LLC, President and CEO Chris Albrecht said. "The creative team has envisioned a highly entertaining and distinctly original TV program that fits in perfectly with our lineup,...

In a move that seems to have been inspired by their break-out success with Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the premium cable channel Starz has okayed a second TV fantasy series, Camelot, a contemporary retelling of the King Arthur legend. Despite its modern setting, the show will be based on Le Morte d'Arthur, Thomas Malory's 15th compilation of most of the King Arthur mythology. The ten-episode series will reportedly debut in mid-2011. Last year, NBC aired Kings, a contemporary retelling of the King David legend, but without much ratings success. Camelot will be produced by Graham King, who won an Oscar for The Departed (and who also has in the works movie versions of the children's fantasy The Invention of Hugo Cabret and the sci-fi novel Hyperion) and two producers of The Tudors, Morgan O'Sullivan and Michael Hirst. Starz' first original TV series was Crash, but has had its greatest success with their second offering,...

Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall is working on a new TV series called Camelot, based on the King Arthur story, for American cable channel Starz.
Chibnall has also written two episodes of the new Doctor Who series starting on April 3, as well as penning stories for Law & Order: UK and Life on Mars.
Starz president and CEO Chris Albecht proclaimed (somewhat inaccurately for those of us who know the origins of the Arthurian legend): "The story of Arthur isn't history, it's mythology, and Camelot isn't a place but an idea of hope that has resonated at different times throughout history."
The 10-episode show will premiere in the first half of 2011, says The Hollywood Reporter. It will use Thomas Malory's 15th century work Le Morte d'Arthur as a basis for what is described as a romantic adventure series.

Chris Albrecht is building "Camelot" at Starz.
In its first series order since Albrecht took the reins as president and CEO, the pay cabler has greenlighted a contemporary retelling of the Arthurian legend from a producing team that encompasses four countries -- the U.S., U.K., Ireland and Canada -- and is led by Oscar-winning producer Graham King and "The Tudors" masterminds Morgan O'Sullivan and Michael Hirst.
The 10-episode "Camelot," slated to premiere in first-half 2011, marks the first project from King's recently launched Gk-tv. It uses Thomas Malory's 15th century compilation, "Le Morte d'Arthur," often considered the definitive work on the legend of King Arthur, as a starting point for a take on the tale that looks to weave authenticity into a narrative relatable to contemporary audiences.

Just two days ago, I brought you the rundown of what filmmakers were dusting off their Tennyson, Le Morte d'Arthur, T.H. White and John Boorman and heading back to that spot that was once known as Camelot. One of them is now officially official, as Variety reports that Guy Ritchie is attached to direct a new King Arthur film for Warner Bros. But instead of the Warren Ellis script that was being bandied around, Variety says it'll be scripted by Ritchie and John Hodge.
Beyond that, there's as little to go on as there was in the scraps of my previous Arthurian article. Variety notes that it will be a "re-imagining" of the Arthur myth, but that it's drawing on Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d' Arthur. This 15th century collection of tales has been the basis of just about every Arthur story to date, including John Boorman's Excalibur.

Captain America Casting Whirlwind: The movie blogs erupted all day Tuesday with rumors John Krasinski had come out as the frontrunner to play the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America based on an earlier list of candidates. Well, guess what, it wasn't true. Instead, now Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) is the frontrunner alongside Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). However, it appears to be quite a commitment, a nine-picture commitment in fact, the follow-up film in the deal is said to be The Avengers. The First Avenger: Captain America is still set for a July 22, 2011 release with Wolfman director Joe Johnston helming the pic. [Heat Vision / Deadline / Fox 411]

Last week it was reported that Guy Ritchie was planning a King Arthur movie*, and now Variety has turned up a few tidbits to add to the mix. It seems that this news story will be based on Thomas Malory's 15th century collection of Arthur legends, Le Morte d'Arthur, and that Ritchie is already working with John Hodge (Trainspotting) on the screenplay. For those of you not au fait with 15th century literature, Malory's book was started when he was in prison in the 1450s, and assembled all the popular tales about Arthur into one easily-readable (if Middle English is your thing) package. The sections of the book focus on Arthur's birth, his struggle against the Roman Empire, his knights Lancelot and Gareth, the story of Tristan and Isolde, the quest for the Holy Grail, Lancelot's affair with Guinevere and the breaking of the Round Table and Arthur's death.

X-Men and Superman Returns director Bryan Singer will direct a remake of the 1981 fantasy movie Excalibur for Warner Bros.
The project is in development with Legendary Pictures, the same production house that produced Superman Returns with the director. According to Variety, Legendary and WB have been working for months to secure the rights to the original movie which are partially owned by the director, John Boorman. Boorman's film was based on the story written in the 15th century by Thomas Malory.
The '81 movie retold the legend of King Arthur and how he came to be ruler of Camelot and war with his half-sister Morgana. It starred a plethora of British stars just starting out in their film careers such as Helen Mirren, Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart and Nicol Williamson as Merlin.
However, don't expect Singer to make the new Excalibur as his next film as the project doesn't have a screenplay yet.

What's so special about May?
Of course, it's the grande dame of film festivals, the Festival de Cannes, which has been held in May for the past 60 years. But Thomas Mallory's hoary observation about the "lusty month of May" also applies to the global boxoffice, with summer tentpoles now staking out their day-and-date claims to the month with unprecedented gusto.
Internationally, the May syndrome received a major lift early this month when Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 3 set all-time international opening records of $176.6 million for a conventional weekend opening and $231 million for a six-day blast.
DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's animated sequel Shrek the Third got off the ground in four international markets this past weekend. Then, on Wednesday, Disney/BVI's third film in the Pirates franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," lifts off in France and explodes around the globe by the end of next week.
Even before Spidey 3 ratified that May is a hot month for tentpoles as well as maypoles, the major studios penciled in or locked in no less than six potential blockbusters for May 2008. Dibs on overseas dates, tentative or firmed, have been taken by Paramount for Iron Man, May 2; 20th Century Fox, The Day the Earth Stood Still, May 9; Warner Bros. Pictures, Speed Racer, also May 9; Disney/BVI, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, May 16; Paramount, the fourth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, May 22; and Fox, Starship Dave, May 30.
And May hopes have extended to 2009, as well. Two studios have eyes on May 22, 2009, with Fox pitching James Cameron's Avatar and Paramount with Monsters vs. Aliens.
Many believe the flowers-after-showers month first came into global prominence with Universal's initial The Mummy in May 1999. It was a time when the overseas market was just starting to take hold as a viable summer outlet as new air-conditioned multiplexes began to proliferate.
"It is the start of the U.S. summer," Paramount Pictures International president Andrew Cripps said. "And as such, day-and-date tentpoles need to go into that period to maximize worldwide boxoffice and to certainly get out in key markets before piracy eats away at revenue potential and to tie into certain holiday times."
David Kornblum, vp international sales and distribution at Buena Vista International, is of the school that believes that giant hit movies put global audiences in the mood for more of the same.
