8 Feet Tall and Light as a Feather: Walker and Lamattina Chronicle the Life and Love of a Puppeteering Legend
You’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know Big Bird. Of the many beloved creatures that sprang from the genius of Jim Henson, Sesame Street’s Big Bird may well be the most universally recognizable. Bearing the spirit of a child within the body of an 8-foot canary yellow behemoth, Big Bird became a larger than life icon of children’s television. Yet, despite Caroll Spinney’s famed collaborators and lengthy list of accolades that include Emmys, Grammys, and even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you may not recognize the lanky, mop-headed man who has brought the bird, as well as Oscar the Grouch, to life for the last 45 years. Following the success of Constance Marks’s Kevin Clash bio-doc Being Elmo, directors Chad Walker...

Well that was quick. A day following the news that the subject of last year's Sundance award-winning documentary "Being Elmo," Kevin Clash -- known the world over as the man behind Elmo on "Sesame Street" -- took a surprise leave of absence from the show in the wake of allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy, the unidentified accuser (now a 23-year-old man) has recanted his account. He how says he was an adult at the time of their relationship, confirming what Clash told TMZ. "It was between two consenting adults," he told the outlet yesterday, "and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to make it into something it was not." Read More: Interview | It's Good to Be Elmo: Kevin Clash and Constance Marks Talk About "Being Elmo" In a statement today made to the press, Clash said, "I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest.

★★★☆☆ Star of Sesame Street Elmo, the beloved red fur ball that loves to hug, is known the world over. But who is the man behind the muppet? Constance Marks' award-winning documentary Being Elmo (2011) asks just that and takes a look at the life of Kevin Clash, the man who from childhood was obsessed with becoming a puppeteer.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey
The Muppets are clearly real. Look at footage of them interacting with anyone from infants to world leaders and you'll see the human eyes lock on to those ping-pong ball peepers the Muppets have, and the little bundle of cloth and plastic is treated like a proper person.
Mostly this is down to the operator, the Muppeteer. They do their job so well they become invisible. Constance Marks's excellent, touching documentary focuses on one such puppeteer, Kevin Clash, who controls the phenomenally popular Elmo. Clash's story is one of unwavering belief, from an early age, that he'd end up doing what he loved as a job. It's a story that he must share with many others in his field; puppeteering isn't something one wanders into late in life.
Clash's basic but stable upbringing in Baltimore was far enough away from Jim Henson's New...

Movie puppeteers are a rather sinister bunch, among them the obsessed Michael Redgrave in Dead of Night, the repressed Mel Ferrer in Lili and the disturbed John Cusack in Being John Malkovich. But there is nothing but sweetness and light surrounding Kevin Clash, the first African-American to enter that great fraternity of American puppeteers associated with Frank Oz and Jim Henson. He began building his own puppets as a child in Baltimore under the encouraging aegis of loving working-class parents after watching TV shows in the 1960s, and after a serious apprenticeship was inducted into Sesame Street where he created the famous red-haired, pop-eyed, orange-nosed Elmo. He's now Sesame Street's senior puppet coordinator and muppet captain. Constance Marks's delightful, unpretentious documentary both captures the man in all his complex simplicity and throws light on his craft.

Damsels In Distress (12A)
(Whit Stillman, 2011, Us) Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Adam Brody, Ryan Metcalf, Megalyn Echikunwoke. 99 mins
Stillman casts a wry eye across the college campus, and settles on Gerwig's clique of preppy girls who confuse charity with condescension. The result is distinctively articulate, witty, gently surreal and hilariously sarcastic. But as well as parodying these misguided teens, Stillman clearly has great sympathy for them. It's good to have him back.
Avengers Assemble (12A)
(Joss Whedon, 2012, Us) Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson. 142 mins
Considering the lack of leeway Whedon had with this superhero juggernaut, he pulls off a remarkable feat, keeping all the plates spinning with as much irony as he can get away with. It descends into a numbing effects orgy, but it's fast and fun along the way.
Albert Nobbs (15)
(Rodrigo García, 2011, UK/Ire) Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska. 113 mins

Constance Marks’ film is not simply a documentary about a man and his puppet. Being Elmo fixes its sights on Kevin Clash, the performer who has been a key figure behind the scenes of Sesame Street and is personally responsible for bringing one of the most recognisable of Jim Henson’s creations to life.
It’s an inspiring story of a man who followed his dream and Clash (and Elmo) emerge as fascinating characters, the film is playing in UK cinemas as from today and we have a brief clip from the film which gives an idea of the power, responsiblity and enjoyment Clash has.
Here’s the clip, catch the film as soon as you can – check here to find out where it’s playing near you.

If you're looking for a tale of a dysfunctional puppet-handler, Constance Marks's inspiring look at a Sesame Street icon isn't it
With the Muppets melting hearts all over again on the big screen, it is a nice moment for this sweet-natured documentary about Kevin Clash, the puppeteer regarded as dauphin to the late Jim Henson; Clash is the man who created the much-loved Elmo character on Sesame Street, a wacky figure whose celeb importance is such that he is described here as the Brad Pitt for five-year-olds. The movie takes us through Clash's tough childhood in Baltimore, his early interest in puppetry, and the liberating experience of seeing the TV show Sesame Street with its inspired repudiation of racism. Director Constance Marks shows how Clash developed Henson's characterisation techniques, with the puppets' distinctive ruminative "nodding" style, making them appear to be thinking and reacting without needing to speak. The life and times of puppeteer Kevin Clash are brought to the screen in Being Elmo. Here's Michael's review of a charming documentary...
Thanks to the success of the recent Muppets revival flick - a sequel to which has just been cheekily announced by Disney - interest in the work of Jim Henson is higher than any other time in recent memory.
With that in mind, has there ever been a riper moment for a documentary that looks into ‘the soul of a puppeteer’? In a stroke of serendipitous movie magic, this week we are treated to the release Being Elmo, a biographical documentary about Sesame Street puppeteer Kevin Clash. The timing couldn’t be better, and, what’s more, the film isn’t half bad either.
Across a trim 80 minutes, director Constance Marks traverses not only Clash’s personal story, but also a detailed profile of the Elmo character itself.

★★★☆☆ You'd be hard-pushed to find a more heart-warming documentary this year than Constance Marks' Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (2011), which charts the rise of devoted Elmo handler Kevin Clash from his humble beginnings in Baltimore to his tragically short working relationship and friendship with the late, great Jim Henson. What shines through is Clash's dedication to the worthy cause of puppetry, despite its detrimental effect on the relationship between himself and his maturing daughter.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade
Directed By Lincoln Ruchti
Synopsis: At the unassuming Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa, Iowa, early gamers fought for bragging rights at the 1982 Video Game World Championships. See how competitive gaming started, and meet arcade owner Walter Day, who still oversees scoring.
Why You Should Check It Out: There is just something about that arcade experience that I really miss. Today’s online gaming world is full of foul mouth preteen kids mocking you in almost every turn. Back in the day those kids were standing right next to you...

Ratings (out of five): *** 1/2
Constance Marks' documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey tells the story of a shy black kid, growing up poor in Baltimore. Kevin Clash has a dream, but it has nothing to do with sports or hip-hop music. Rather, he wants to be a puppeteer on "Sesame Street."
This is a great twist for a movie, but Being Elmo does not dwell on it. In fact, it hardly brings up Clash's skin color at all, and it only brings up his former poverty in terms of the obstacles he overcame. For example, in order to meet puppet designer Kermit Love, he had to wait for a school trip to New York; his family couldn't afford train fare otherwise. (What the movie does not explain is why there was a camera present and footage of this first meeting.)...

Welcome back to This Week In DVD! It’s a fairly calm release week, but there are a few recognizable titles hitting shelves including Steven Spielberg’s cheesy War Horse and the universally acclaimed film about a man famous for sticking his hand inside a felt anus, Being Elmo. Lesser known releases include a couple Cartoon Network shows, Bob Newhart’s unfortunate TV swan song, two European imports worth your time and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Tyrannosaur Joseph (Peter Mullan) leads a sad, lonely life punctuated with bouts of alcohol-fueled violence, but when he meets a charitable woman named Hannah (Olivia Colman) he discovers his humanity may yet be salvageable. “An animal can only take so much punishment and humiliation before it snaps, fights back,” he says at one point. “It’s just nature.” Paddy Considine wrote and directed this, his...

This week: Steven Spielberg is known for marrying sentimentality with epic drama, and that tradition continues with "War Horse," a movie set during World War I about the special relationship between a man and his loyal horse, and their struggle to reunite against all odds.
Also new are Matt Damon in "We Bought a Zoo," the documentary "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" and the Blu-ray debuts of "Madonna: Truth or Dare" and "Chinatown."
'War Horse'
Box Office: $80 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 77% Fresh
Storyline: Steven Spielberg's epic film adaptation of the 1982 children's novel stars Jeremy Irvine as a young man who enlists during World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards (it didn't win any) and costars Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Thewlis.

2011 has been a fantastic year for documentaries. In fact, you might see more than one on our best films of 2011 list. But in order to give the genre the recognition it deserves, we wanted to highlight all those that missed the cut. These films often provide more engaging drama with their veracity and technique than most narrative features and it killed us to skip over some we loved.
Just to mention a few that didn’t make the cut in no particular order: Tabloid, Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, Public Speaking, George Harrison: Living In The Material World, Self Made, Project Nim, The Swell Season, Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, Page One: Inside the New York Times and Cave of Forgotten Dreams. But we’ve narrowed it down to just ten with write-ups from our own John Fink, unless otherwise noted. Check them out...

The Muppets are legendary TV and film characters, but there's something about Sesame Street's giggliest resident, Elmo, that makes small children perk up. There's that bright red fur and adorable bulgy eyes, but it's the soul of the puppeteer that people are responding to. It's an amazing gift."...

Title: Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey Director: Constance Marks If the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” spotlights some fascinating occupations that many of us wouldn’t necessarily rush to embrace as our own, then “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey” tells the tale of a job every bit as quirky and atypical, and seemingly a lot more fun, and better smelling. More specifically, it tells the life story of Kevin Clash, an African-American kid who grew up in the 1970s in Baltimore, and eventually would find fortune, if not fame, as the voice of Elmo, a breakout “Sesame Street” character that became a full-fledged zeitgeist phenomenon, spreading from the preschool and adolescent set into the...

This weekend offers a number of really strong docs, some of the best of the year, and we wanted to point out a couple that are worth checking out this weekend (if you live in New York City) or to look out for down the road. Both Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey and The Swell Season look at fame from different angles, the former from the perspective of someone who has enjoyed it for many years, the latter from a couple who had it thrust upon them and how it affects their relationship. The effect this little Muppet has on people is remarkable: I watched grown men -- we're talking gruff dudes with tattoos and beards -- turn into squealing children in his presence. The IFC crew was giddy for days.
I'll be honest: I was pretty starstruck too. I'm a child of "Sesame Street" myself, and though Elmo really came to prominence after my time watching the show, he was right in my younger brother's wheelhouse. So getting to watch him come to life before my eyes was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had on this job (on the other hand,...

The year is rounding down, but the strongest films have yet to arrive. With three months left, many of the highly-anticipated features we’ve been talking about for quite some time are finally hitting theaters. While the majority of promising films are mostly limited releases, you can see a handful on VOD. But as always, we go by the first theatrical release date so check distributor information on when they’ll be in your city or in your home.

Two films we quite liked at Sundance this year were Constance Marks‘ documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey and J.C. Chandor‘s financial thriller Margin Call. We showed off the trailer for the former recently, which follows the adventures of Kevin Clash, the man behind Elmo. The poster below also features a quote from our review, which one can read here.
The latter film stars Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Simon Baker, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci. We praised the character-based drama which takes place over the course of just 24 hours. Check out the posters below via IMPAwards and read our Margin Call review here and watch the trailer here. Both films hit theaters on October 21st and will expand from there.
We also have the first posters for Darrell J. Roodt’s Winnie and Jon Loach‘s Oranges and Sunshine. The Winnie Mandela biopic stars Jennifer Hudson,...

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey has been met with praise and critical acclaim when it was released during the Sundance Film Festival back in January, and now we got our first glimpse at the trailer for the documentary. The film, which documents Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo, won the Special Jury Prize at the festival and is now slated for a theatrical release in October.
Directed by Constance Marks and narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey chronicles the life and career of Kevin Clash, a young child with dreams of becoming a puppeteer who would go on to bring life to Elmo, one of the most beloved “Sesame Street” characters of all-time. It documents Clash’s art of puppetry, his inspiration, Jim Henson, interviews with iconic puppeteers and great archival footage.

It.s often fascinating to hear stories of people who grew up with a very specific passion, and went on to achieve success and sometimes fame by turning that passion into a profession. Being Elmo appears to be a documentary that tells such a story. Directed by Constance Marks, Being Elmo made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last January, and tells the story of Kevin Clash, the man behind the voice and movements of Elmo. Whoopi Goldberg narrates the film, which chronicles Clash.s life and work, including his passion for puppets. Among those who are interviewed are Frank Oz, Rosie O.Donnell, and Cheryl Hanson. IndieWire posted the trailer below, which runs just over two minutes. The site notes in their article that it.s advised to bring tissues if you go see the film. I.m willing to bet they.re right on that, considering I...

Here is the trailer for the documentary Being Elmo, which follows the journey of Kevin Clash the puppeteer of the one of the most-loved characters on Sesame Street. I can see why this film directed by Constance Marks has been a hit festivals, it is very touching.
I was in children's theater in high school and this brings back a lot of memories from that class. Check out the trailer for the film below:
Being Elmo opens at the IFC Center in New York on October 21.

With this wonderful doc finally slated for a rolling theatrical release starting in October and moving through December, we finally have the trailer for Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey, a charming documentary which brought warmth to many hearts in the winter cold of the Sundance Film Festival back in January. The chronicle of Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind beloved "Sesame Street" character Elmo, went on to win a Special Jury Prize at Sundance, and both myself and our friends at The Film Stage (quoted in the trailer) absolutely loved every minute of this heart-warming story. It's a must watch! Watch the trailer below. Jim Henson created Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, Oscar the Grouch and many others for Sesame Street, but there is one iconic character that stands above them all. Elmo is beloved by many, including my younger self, and at Sundance this year we got an intimate behind-the-scenes look at his rise to fame. The genius behind it all was Kevin Clash and in Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, director Constance Marks chronicles his adventure to the spotlight.
We adored the film at Sundance (our review and wrap-up) and it looks like the distributor Submarine Deluxe took notice. Not one, but two of our quotes made the cut in the first trailer below for the “feel-good movie of the year.” Check it out via indieWIRE and leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Coming out of this year's Sundance Film Festival, one of the stories people seemed most eager to tell was how they cried their little hearts out [1] after seeing Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey. The documentary, directed by Constance Marks, is about Kevin Clash, the man behind the famous Sesame Street character Elmo. It simultaneously tells the tale of how he was [2] able to turn his unique dream - to be a puppeteer - into reality while also chronicling the rise of Jim Henson and the Muppets. It was Peter's favorite film [3] at Sundance this year and now it's finally being released. Being Elmo will open in New York on October 21 and then begin expanding on November 4. After the jump, see what date it's coming to your city and watch a video blog reaction to the film. Here's a video blog that Peter and David recorded after seeing Being Elmo at...

It was a homecoming of sorts for Baltimore native Kevin Clash (Elmo), who attended the screening of Constance Marks' "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" at Silverdocs earlier this week with members of his family. "Being Elmo" follows the career of Clash, spending much time with him in Baltimore as he recounts his childhood and early love for puppets. A celebration of Clash's unparalleled artistry, "Being Elmo" will be released theatrically later this year.

There's nothing more likeable than a Muppet. I'm pretty sure that's a proven fact. Whether you were a Sesame Street kind of kid, a lover of The Muppet Show or a fan of Fraggle Rock, chances are any show involving Muppets had the ability to bring a smile to your face – and hopefully it still does. Constance Marks' delightful documentary takes you beyond the foam heads and wacky personalities of the Muppets to get to know the people who bring them to life, specifically Kevin Clash, the man behind the most loving 3 ½ year old of all time, Elmo.
