Sam Cotton in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’
When Sam Cotton landed the title role in the ABC/RevLover Films’ dramedy Diary of an Uber Driver, he approached the job with some trepidation.
It was his first lead after playing Bruce, the nemesis of Luke McGregor’s Daniel in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and son-in-law Wayne in Sbs’s The Family Law.
He plays Uber driver Ben, whose life had always been in cruise control until his newish girlfriend Beck (Zahra Newman) gets pregnant in the six-parter scripted by Tom Ward, based on Ben Phillips’ blog.
He got the gig after doing a self-tape when he lived in Brisbane (he is now based in Sydney), followed by a call back in Sydney a few weeks later.
“At the outset I was kind of terrified but the director Matt Moore did so much to make me comfortable,” he tells If. “He...

Do rediscovered ‘lost’ movies always disappoint? This Depression-era pre-Code science fiction disaster thriller was unique in its day, and its outrageously ambitious special effects –New York City is tossed into a blender — were considered the state of the art. Sidney Blackmer and a fetching Peggy Shannon fight off rapacious gangs in what may be the first post-apocalyptic survival thriller.

Pat O'Brien movies on TCM: 'The Front Page,' 'Oil for the Lamps of China' Remember Pat O'Brien? In case you don't, you're not alone despite the fact that O'Brien was featured – in both large and small roles – in about 100 films, from the dawn of the sound era to 1981. That in addition to nearly 50 television appearances, from the early '50s to the early '80s. Never a top star or a critics' favorite, O'Brien was nevertheless one of the busiest Hollywood leading men – and second leads – of the 1930s. In that decade alone, mostly at Warner Bros., he was seen in nearly 60 films, from Bs (Hell's House, The Final Edition) to classics (American Madness, Angels with Dirty Faces). Turner Classic Movies is showing nine of those today, Nov. 11, '15, in honor of what would have been the Milwaukee-born O'Brien's 116th birthday. Pat O'Brien and James Cagney Spencer Tracy had Katharine Hepburn.

Cary Grant movies: 'An Affair to Remember' does justice to its title (photo: Cary Grant ca. late 1940s) Cary Grant excelled at playing Cary Grant. This evening, fans of the charming, sophisticated, debonair actor -- not to be confused with the Bristol-born Archibald Leach -- can rejoice, as no less than eight Cary Grant movies are being shown on Turner Classic Movies, including a handful of his most successful and best-remembered star vehicles from the late '30s to the late '50s. (See also: "Cary Grant Classic Movies" and "Cary Grant and Randolph Scott: Gay Lovers?") The evening begins with what may well be Cary Grant's best-known film, An Affair to Remember. This 1957 romantic comedy-melodrama is unusual in that it's an even more successful remake of a previous critical and box-office hit -- the Academy Award-nominated 1939 release Love Affair -- and that it was directed...

On the heels of the piece I published yesterday on Tyler Perry being at somewhat of a crossroads, comes news this morning that the filmmaker, via his 34th Street Films, and Lionsgate, have picked up an action/comedy pitch from screenwriters Jim and Brian Kehoe, titled Top Of The Food Chain, which is being described as City Slickers meets The Grey. Story specifics aren't yet public; and neither is whether Perry will star in the film, or simply produce. China-based Dmg Entertainment, which co-produced Iron Man 3 and Looper, is also on-board to produce, along with Perry, Ozzie Areu, Matt Moore and Chris Cowles. Dmg...

San Diego — Samuel L. Jackson visits Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles twice a month. Employees there keep a box stuffed with the latest comic books and graphic novels.
Does that make him a nerd? Go ahead and call him that. We dare you.
"I don't know who actually defined it as such," Jackson said during an interview Saturday at Comic-Con where he was promoting his fantasy-driven film, "Captain America: The Winter Solider." "I've always read comic books. I've always spent time in comic book stores. I still do. I don't particularly consider myself a nerd. It's just that part of pop culture that I'm also a part of."
If Jackson, arguably the baddest you know what in the history of cinema, is comfortable with the world of super heroes, sci-fi and fantasy, it's probably time to stop throwing around that word nerd. Those who would turn their nose up...

Carly Rae should stick to her day job! The singer threw the opening pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays, and it was not exactly a home run… Watch her first pitch here.
Carly Rae Jepsen, 27, obviously did not wish for a solid throwing arm when she threw that wish in the well! The “Call Me Maybe” singer threw the opening pitch at the July 14 game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros in St. Petersburg, Fla., and it was called the “worst ever” opening pitch. Yikes!
Carly Rae Jepsen — Not A Sports Star
Carly threw the ball, and it was barely air born before it and slowly crept past the first base line, and it even knocked a camera out of a photographer’s hands in the process! Rays Pitcher Matt Moore had to run after the ball, while Carly giggled with embarrassment.
“So apparently I made Espn with my fail of a pitch.

-- It's just a quick kiss, but it's a long step forward for Archie Comics' only openly gay character Kevin Keller.
The Riverdale teen finds his life turned upside down after locking lips with his boyfriend, Devon, in Pop Tate's diner, drawing the ire of at least one disapproving Riverdale mom.

"Kevin is kind of used to that, but Veronica records the whole thing and of course uploads it to the Riverdale equivalent of YouTube and that starts a bit of a debate," said Parent.
For Archie Comics it's a bit of art imitating life. Parent said he wrote the story after efforts to remove a comic magazine showing Keller getting married drew at complaints. One Million Moms, a project of The American Family Association,...

-- Dido, "Girl Who Got Away" (RCA Records)
Some artists are compelled to stay with a style they're comfortable with. Others? They're not shy about ranging into new territory now and then.
Dido? She's exploring new frontiers, soaking up the sights and sounds, coalescing her experiences, desires and treks into songs on "Girl Who Got Away" that jump from tart electronica-inspired landscapes to earnest, almost low-key folk-oriented confessions that can be likened to an afternoon coffee klatch for two.
"No one could have told me how much I'd miss you, and how soon the world moves on," she sings in "Loveless Hearts," her voice an emotional sheen atop a gently rising crescendo of crisp keyboard tones climbing swiftly in time.
Such is the ranging, diverse offerings from "Girl Who Got Away," Dido's fourth album and first since 2008's "Safe Trip Home." It features styles that encompass lush orchestral layouts, darkly...

Philadelphia — Writer Geoff Johns has taken DC Entertainment's Green Lantern and its associated characters through brightest day and blackest night, but after nine years of scripting tales about the galactic police force whose rings are powered by will, he's leaving the series in May with issue No. 20 to focus on the Justice League and its related titles.
In doing so, Johns is stepping away from the characters that he first tackled in the pages of "Rebirth," a six-issue miniseries drawn by Ethan Van Sciver in 2004-2005, that brought characters such as Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Raner and John Stewart back to the forefront while revisiting the six-decade history of the Green Lantern Corps.
"I'm really proud of all the stuff we've built with Green Lantern – from Larfleeze to the different corps," Johns told The Associated Press about his decision. "The universe has expanded and will live well past my run.

But Spider-Man is still slinging from building to building – reborn, refreshed and revived with a new sense of the old maxim that Ben Parker taught his then-fledgling nephew that "with great power, comes great responsibility."
Writer Dan Slott, who's been penning Spidey adventures for the better part of the last 100 issues for Marvel Entertainment, said the culmination of the story is a new, dramatically different direction for the Steve Ditko and Stan Lee-created hero.
"This is an epic turn," Slott said. "I've been writing Spider-Man for 70-plus issues. Every now and then, you have to shake it up. ... The reason Spider-Man is one of the longest running characters is they always find a way to keep it fresh. Something to shake up the mix."

As TV thrillers go, this was one of the more tense Criminal Minds episodes. As usual, I found myself conflicted between the great writing and the horrific subject matter, especially as the latter involved children.
Tonight's UnSubs in "The Wheels on the Bus" were a pair of brothers who, after being kicked off of a gaming site, decided to create their own version of the online video game entitled "Gods of Conflict" by playing it out in real life, using high school students as their game pieces, and real guns as their weaponry.
The gameplay around the first confrontation seemed uneven: one player merely had to open a box with a key, take out a gun and shoot the other player, whereas the other had to assemble a gun before he could even get in the game. I couldn't buy the fact that the girl remained functional after killing her classmate,...

The season is halfway done, and it seems to have flown by. One wonders how the season has been for these five NFL rookie quarterbacks who have lead their team out on to the field under the pressure that comes with playing in the National Football League.
It’s that time again, where we hand out grades to the best and worst performing rookie QBs of the week. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a mid-season report card that I will be putting together some time in the next few days. For now, here’s week eight’s grades:
Russell Wilson, Seattle. Final grade: B
After a poor showing last week, Wilson has bounced back up the charts to be the top graded rookie this week. His Seahawks teams lost a close one to the Lions, but Wilson played well. He completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts for 236 yards. This included two touchdowns and one interception,...

Detroit — When DC Comics decided to blow up its fabled universe and create a brave, diverse future, Geoff Johns drew from the past for a new character: his own background as an Arab-American.
The company's chief creative officer and writer of the relaunched "Green Lantern" series dreamed up Simon Baz, DC's most prominent Arab-American superhero and the first to wear a Green Lantern ring. The character and creator share Lebanese ancestry and hail from the Detroit area, which boasts one of the largest and oldest Arab communities in the United States.
"I thought a lot about it – I thought back to what was familiar to me," Johns, 39, told The Associated Press by phone last week from Los Angeles, where he now lives. "This is such a personal story."

Davie, Fla. -- For Chad Johnson, a weekend confrontation with his wife has led to repercussions beyond a misdemeanor charge and NFL unemployment.
VH1 pulled from its schedule the reality series "Ev and Ocho," starring newlyweds Johnson – formerly known as Chad Ochocinco – and Evelyn Lozada. The network announced the move Monday, citing "the seriousness of the allegations" against Johnson, and said it had no plans to air the show.
The Dolphins terminated Johnson's contract Sunday night, about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives." "Ev and Ocho" was conceived as a spinoff and had been slated to debut Sept. 3.
The Dolphins' decision to release Johnson left coach Joe Philbin with a dearth of experience at receiver and a potential backlash in the locker room. Philbin decided Johnson's knack for outlandish antics were a detriment that outweighed...

Philadelphia — Seven decades after it was cut by DC Comics, the check sent to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for their creation of Superman is up for auction.
Made out to the duo for $412, the check includes a line item for $130 showing that DC paid for full ownership and rights to the man from Krypton and paved the way for comic books, TV, radio and films. But, a legal dispute over creator's rights to the character is still far from settled.
Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles, said the check went up for auction Monday through April 16. By late Monday night, bidding had jumped from $1 to $20,500.
He said the check is a touchstone for the comic book industry because it represents the launching of the Golden Age of superheroes.

Philadelphia — It's a familiar tale: Science genius, smart girlfriend, her hot-shot brother, and a football-player-turned-accomplished-pilot travel to space, get bombarded by cosmic rays and come back a foursome with fantastic powers.
But it's a story born of the early 1960s when phones were on hooks, faces were in books and tweets were coming from the robin down on Jaybird Street.
Marvel Comics is updating the origin of the Fantastic Four this week in a sleeker tale dubbed "Season One" with a more contemporary vibe, while sticking to the roots of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, brother Johnny, and Ben Grimm, otherwise known for the past 51 years as Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing.
Think tablet PCs instead of room-sized computing machines.

Philadelpha — More than a quarter of a century after "Watchmen" intrigued readers with tales of less-than-heroic and all-too-human – save for Dr. Manhattan – crime-fighting vigilantes, DC Entertainment is revisiting them in a series of original prequels this summer.
The publisher of DC Comics said Wednesday that it will launch seven interlocking and inter-connected miniseries – each focusing on a specific character – as it revisits the world first and last seen in the 1986-1987 12-issue series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, which has remained a staple of critics and consumers and a near-constant best-selling graphic novel.
The seven titles will carry the "Before Watchmen" banner, DC said.
"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee said in a statement. "After 25 years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.

The Colbert Super Pac -- recently renamed The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super Pac -- has released a new ad appealing to voters in South Carolina.
Jon Stewart, who took over the Colbert Super Pac after the comedian decided to explore a presidential run, emailed Colbert supporters Monday night touting the ad, which was "released in advance of the upcoming underfunded Gop Primary." Though the ad -- titled "Not Abel" -- was released by a pro-Colbert group, it encourages South Carolina residents to vote for another Republican in the upcoming primary -- Herman Cain.
"A vote for Herman Cain is a vote for America," the ad says. "He's such a Washington outsider, he's not even running for president."
The ad comes as Colbert pushes forth with his campaign despite the fact that he technically can't run in the South Carolina primary. HuffPost's Amanda Terkel reports:

Washington -- Stephen Colbert technically has no chance of winning the Gop primary in South Carolina -- but that's not stopping him from insisting he can.
The Comedy Central host recently transferred control of his super Pac to fellow network host Jon Stewart, so that he is now legally free to explore running for president in his home state of South Carolina.
The move was largely prompted by a survey from Public Policy Polling that showed Colbert has more support than former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who is actually running for president.
But as the South Carolina Republican Party has insisted, Colbert has no chance of winning if he does decide to run.
"South Carolina state law does not allow write-in ballots in presidential primaries. There is no 'blank' space on voting machines to write-in a candidate," said South Carolina Gop Executive Director Matt Moore. "Stephen Colbert has about as...

Stephen Colbert apparently won't have a hand in the Republican presidential primary in his home state of South Carolina. But it's not for lack of trying.
Colbert wrote an op-ed piece for The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., detailing his efforts to fund the state's Gop primary, which takes place Jan. 21. Earlier this year, the state Republican party and counties had a dispute over who should pay for the election, with the counties saying the party reneged on a promise to pick up the tab.
Enter Colbert and his super Pac fund-raising organization, which he references frequently on "The Colbert Report" but which is very real and operates the same way other super PACs do.
"I called up the South Carolina Gop and said, 'How much cash would you have to raise to keep your promise to counties? Off the record; I'll never tell a soul,'" he writes.

There's no joking around when it comes to Stephen Colbert. Ok, clearly that's not true, but The Colbert Report host seems to be pretty serious about helping close the funding gap for South Carolina's first-in-the-South Gop presidential primary by putting in $500,000! Now that's serious. However, there's a catch: The comedian wants the ballot renamed to "The Colbert Super Pac South Carolina Republican Primary." So was there really a deal in place? Each side seems to have a different opinion. Colbert wrote in a guest column for South Carolina's the State, "The Gop agreed to everything." But state Gop executive director Matt Moore told The...

Stephen Colbert wrote an opinion piece today for The State, the largest newspaper in his native South Carolina, to address rumors he’d attempted to buy the naming rights to his home state’s 2012 Republican primary. In the op-ed, Colbert found a way to rope in Tostitos, the Kardashians, Ronald Reagan, and, of course, the South Carolina Republican Party. He claimed the Party had strongly considered his offer (a fact they have denied) and, in the spirit of Southern chivalry, kept his offer on the table.

Phoenix — Bil Keane's "Family Circus" comics entertained readers with a simple but sublime mix of humor and traditional family values for more than a half century. The appeal endured, the author thought, because the American public needed the consistency.
Keane, who started drawing the one-panel cartoon featuring Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, P.J. and their parents in February 1960, died Tuesday at age 89 at his longtime home in Paradise Valley, near Phoenix. His comic strip is featured in nearly 1,500 newspapers across the country.
Jeff Keane, Keane's son who lives in Laguna Hills, Calif., said that his father died of congestive heart failure with one of his other sons by his side after his conditioned worsened during the last month. All of Keane's five children, nine grandchildren and great-granddaughter were able to visit him last week, Jeff Keane said.
"He said, `I love you' and that's what I said to him, which...

No, Jean Grey hasn't returned from the dead! Instead, it looks as if Wolverine will be paying his respects to his former love (and wife of Cyclops!) by naming the rebuilt X-Mansion after her. The following article is doing the rounds courtesy of Matt Moore over at the Associated Press, and it sheds a lot of new light on what we can expect from Wolverine & The X-Men after the fallout of "Schism". In finding a new teacher to replace the X-Men's venerated Professor X, writer Jason Aaron has found a not so suitable substitute that's bound to have readers of Marvel Comics' upcoming "Wolverine & the X-Men" series doing a double take. Or even a triple take, given that the new headmaster has three razor-sharp claws that "snikkt!" from both his hands at the mere hint of danger. Wolverine is heading up the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning that will...
