The Zone of Interest, the German-language Holocaust drama directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, has won the United Kingdom its first-ever Academy Award for best international feature at the Oscars 2024.
In his speech for his Cannes Grand Prix-winner, Glazer linked the film’s subject to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the October 7 Hamas terror attacks on Israel have led the Benjamin Netanyahu-led government to launch a ground invasion into Gaza that has now left over 30,0000 Palestinians dead.
“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present,” Glazer told the audience, who had honored him with a standing ovation upon his win. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.”

One of the Spanish-speaking world’s biggest sales forces, Film Factory Entertainment has swooped on sales rights to thriller “Two” (“Duo”), directed by Mar Targarona and the latest production from top Spanish genre auteur producer Rodar y Rodar.
Producer of two milestone titles of Spain’s genre auteur scene – J.A Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillem Morales’ “Julia’s Eyes,” Targarona has built her own directorial career on suspense thrillers that prove unexpected and unpredictable in tone and resolution, such as 2016’s “Boy Missing” and “The Photographer of Mauthausen” – part true-events inspired record, part edge-of-set entertainment – in particular drawing strong notices. “Two” looks no exception. Its singular premise sees two strangers, a man and a woman in their 30s, wake up in an unknown place, naked and glued to each other by their stomachs. They struggle to understand how and why they got there – becoming increasingly terrified as they discover clues and the truth emerges.

‘Unhinged.’
Australian critics scorned Unhinged but audiences turned out last weekend for the road rage thriller starring Russell Crowe and Caren Pistorius.
The Studiocanal release, which stars Pistorius as a single mother who incurs the wrath of Crowe’s character, drummed up $802,000 on more than 200 screens.
Even so, ticket sales remain depressed with Melbourne’s cinemas closed (26 per cent of the market) and most locations operating on reduced sessions and with capacity limits.
The top 20 titles generated nearly $2 million, 11 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero, but nearly 90 per cent below the same weekend a year ago – $17.8 million – when Universal launched Fast & Furious Hobbs and Shaw.
Clearly the pandemic is deterring some cinemagoers. “I think that the fear of what is happening with Covid-19 is impacting audiences still, especially the older audience,” Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieren Dell tells If.
“Most of the other movies we have on are aimed at that audience.

Appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience, Robert Downey Jr., who deftly turned the formerly mid-tier hero Iron Man into a household name over the course of nine films in ten years that culminated with this year’s record-breaking Avengers: Endgame, spent over an hour discussing his fascinating life and career, particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While reflecting on the transition of superhero fiction from campy amusement to serious cinema (the opinions of Martin Scorsese notwithstanding), the two briefly touched on another iconic superhero.
When asked how many different versions of the DC Comics mainstay Batman have appeared on-screen, Downey Jr.’s only response was: “I want to see what Pattinson does. I like that guy.” Downey and Pattison technically worked on the same project once, in the 2010 direct-to-video romance Love & Distrust, which consisted of five distinct short films, though they appeared in separate parts of the movie.

Robert Pattinson out of ‘Mission: Blacklist’ movie (photo: Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in ‘Life’) Robert Pattinson and Mission: Blacklist have parted ways. Pattinson, whose name had been attached to the project for two years — since Cannes 2012 — has reportedly dropped out due to scheduling issues. Now, what could those issues be? Well, Robert Pattinson, best known (at least for the time being) as the vampire Edward Cullen in the immensely popular Twilight movie franchise, has no less than two movies opening at Cannes 2014: David Michôd’s thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, which will be shown as one of Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, also featuring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, and Carrie Fisher, and which is in the running for the Palme d’Or. There’s more: Robert Pattinson has recently completed work on Anton Corbijn’s Life, with Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock,...

Pattinson fights Pearce in violent The Rover image In the last few years, British actor Robert Pattinson has courageously made a point of distancing himself (and his film career) from Edward Cullen, the Twilight movies' lovestruck, sparkling vampire that made the actor famous worldwide as one of the "angles" in the insufferable love triangle also featuring vampire-to-be Kristen Stewart and werewolf Taylor Lautner. Writer-director David Michôd's upcoming thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, is Pattinson's latest tentative to create a character vastly different than the vampire Cullen. (Pictured above: Pattinson vs. Pearce in a bloody The Rover battle.) Currently filming in Australia, Michod's film is set in the near future, in the aftermath of a global financial catastrophe (at this stage, it remains unclear whether or not said catastrophe was the result of the recent highly controversial Cyprus bail-out). Pattinson plays a good-hearted Australian Outback gang member, while Pearce,...

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Javier Beltrán, Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes Paul Morrison’s Little Ashes, starring Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali (!), won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film — Limited release dealing with gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people. The other nominees in that category were Casi Divas, The Country Teacher, Phoebe in Wonderland, and The Secrets. Written by Philippa Goslett, Little Ashes depicts a purported romance between Dali and left-wing poet Federico García Lorca (played by Javier Beltrán), with Lorca feeling comfortable about his sexual orientation and Dali all conflicted about it. The former was later murdered during the Spanish Civil War, while the later became a successful artist and radical right-winger. Matthew McNulty plays Luis Buñuel in the film. In the age of Jazz and surrealism, anyone visiting an elite university residence in Madrid, Spain would find the odd and competitive—both in art or otherwise—friendship between three young prodigies: painter Salvador Dali, filmmaker Luis Bunuel and dramatist/poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Their work proved to outlast the three friends by decades, but Little Ashes is more interested in the strokes of their hips than their pen or brush.
Made before Twilight but released theatrically only last year (and on DVD now), Little Ashes is not exactly the Robert Pattinson-as-Salvador Dali biopic his fans might like to see. In early 2009, Robert Pattinson's biopic Little Ashes was released to the independent film circuit, making major waves in the fan community along the way. In the film, Pattinson portrays Salvador Dali, a Spanish artist famed for his Surrealist and politically jarring paintings. Just today, it was announced that Little Ashes has been nominated for a GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Award. The film is directed by Paul Morrison, who stated that the team "made it in the spirit of . . . just need[ing] to make this film, it’s crying out to be done, without expectations of what will happen to it," and it is produced by Carlo Dusi, who ref ...

Okay, ladies, you need your Robert Pattinson fix. And you need it bad. But you've already seen The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) a dozen times and you just can't wait for either Remember Me (2010) or The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) to open. What are you going to do? Well, we've got some breaking news for you. If you want to check out Pattinson in something really-really different, get ready to visit Blockbuster or reach out to Netflix, as a small, little-seen film everyone's favorite new leading man shot a few years back, pre-Twilight, will arrive on DVD on January 26. It's called Little Ashes (2009) and it casts Pattinson as the eccentric but talented surrealist painter Salvador Dali. Little Ashes is quite unlike anything else in Pattinson's filmography, as far from Twilight (2008) and Harry Potter as could possibly be. It's a period piece, one that tackles taboo issues, and it's not the least bit commercial.

British heartthrob Robert Pattinson admits he once has asked one of his female fans to strip naked in front of the public. Speaking during his appearance in "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", he revealed that he made the request at a recent marathon autograph-signing session.
"It was after a period of signing 500 signatures, and one of [the fans] just came up," Pattinson told Ellen DeGeneres. "You kind of get 10 seconds with each person and you never really say anything, and I kind of got bored of saying, 'Hey, how are you doing?' And [the fan] said in her 10 seconds, 'What can I do to get your attention?' I was like, 'Um, just take your clothes off.' "
Surprisingly, the fan obeyed the order. The Edward Cullen of "Twilight Saga" film series went on detailing, "She stood there and frantically started taking her clothes off and got dragged out of the room by security.

The October 1st deadline for all countries wanting into the Academy Award's foreign-language film category has come and gone. According to IndieWIRE [1], The United Kingdom, which has predominantly submitted Welsh films over the years (if submitting at all), has surprisingly chosen the documentary Afghan Star as its 2009 submission for the Academy Awards. Synopsis After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop Idol has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series 'Afghan Star' and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For a film about renowned artists, Little Ashes lacks style and imagination, a cumbersome clutter of poorly constructed scenes and amateurish acting.
A bland tale of Salvador Dali’s relationship with Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán) attempts to explore a speculative sexual experimentation during the 20’s, a time for revolution and visionaries. Their lavish, homoerotic exploits are meant to shed the era’s repressed nature, but are told with little passion or conviction in a wholly pedestrian plot. The film is simply a paradox of stock storytelling for extraordinary figures.
The presence of Robert Pattinson from Twilight fame only gathers a wider audience for an undeserving work, and the portrait of a tortured artist will only be a torturous affair for his young fans. Pattinson barely transforms from his vampiric role as a brooding romantic into a brooding painter, forcing a delivery in a fleeting accent and overreacting to his cohorts.

Not that the Twilight brigade will care -- because, Omg, Robert Pattinson is almost like totally naked here! -- but only indiscriminate vampire-swooning tweens will appreciate his portrayal of the surrealistic Spanish painter and filmmaker Salvador Dalí. For Pattinson’s interpretation of the man comes down to two hours of stultifying wide-eyed stares and mooning declarations such as “I’m Salvador Dalí, the savior of modern art” that play more as unintentional parody than as any attempt to understand a man whom -- Philippa Goslett’s script would like us to believe -- was a conflicted dreamer who was able to let loose in his art in a way he never was able to do in his own life. Director Paul Morrison (Solomon and Gaenor) makes some odd choices regarding what language we’re hearing this story in -- these native Spaniards speak English, except when Dalí’s onetime friend...

Robert Pattinson trapped in strange new movie.
Robert Pattinson in "Little Ashes"

Some months before he began filming "Twilight," the movie that would ignite his career, Robert Pattinson shot a low-budget art-house film in Spain called "Little Ashes." "Twilight" was released last November; now comes the earlier picture. We can only imagine how Pattinson must feel about this.
The movie, directed by Paul Morrison, has an interesting subject: the 1922 meeting of three soon-to-be-renowned Spanish artists — filmmaker Luis Buñuel, painter Salvador Dalí and the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca — at the Residencia de Estudiantes, a Madrid arts institute. García Lorca is played by the Spanish TV actor Javier Beltrán, who somewhat resembles the young writer. Buñuel is portrayed by an Englishman, Matthew McNulty ("Control"), who looks nothing at all like the great director. And Pattinson has been cast, disastrously, as Dalí.
Actually, it's hard to imagine who could...

Little Ashes, which has been met with heavy anticipation from fans of its star Robert Pattinson (also star of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and How To Be), opens in theatres across the United States today. The film, which is expected to fare quite nicely this weekend, highlights a specific time in the life of Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali (played by Pattinson) in which he meets and becomes conflicted over his love for Federico Garcia Lorca (played by Javier Beltran). The film also stars Matthew McNulty and Marina Gatell ... Says director Paul Morrison about Little Ashes, “the good thing about [it] is that it doesn’t attempt to be a biopic. It doesn’t try to tell the whole story, it just explores one seminal moment. Really, it’s a love story, and that’s what gives it power.” Says producer Carlo Dusi...

“We made it in the spirit of . . . just need[ing] to make this film, it’s crying out to be done, without expectations of what will happen to it,” says Paul Morrison, director of Little Ashes about his film. “But I’ve been around long enough to know it’s when you least expect it that good things can happen.” Little Ashes (which will be released this Friday, May 8, in the United States) has been met with great anticipation. Starring (The Twilight Saga: New Moon and How To Be star) Robert Pattinson, Javier Beltran, Matthew McNulty, and Marina Gatell, and produced by Carlo Dusi, the film will present an ephemeral biopic of the life of Salvador Dali – a Spanish artist whose art, some say, is impossibly well done. Robert Pattinson has indeed gone all and out for his performance in "Little Ashes" as can be seen in the indie drama's new clip. The snippet which runs for more than one minute displays the "Twilight" hunk as Spanish artist Salvador Dali and Javier Beltran as Dali's lover, writer Federico Garcia Lorca.
Opened with a shot of a full moon unveiling itself, the clip moves on showing that both Dali and Lorca are taking a dip in what seems to be a sea. Filled with sexual tension, the two 'dance' in the water, before they take their passionate love affair to the next level. Swimming closer and closer to each other, they finally lock their lips against one another.

By now every fan of Twilight knows that star Robert Pattinson -- he of the half-lidded gaze and spectacularly poofy hair -- will next be seen as painter Salvador Dali in the biopic Little Ashes, opening May 8. They've seen the pictures of his unconvincing mustache. They know that the film focuses on Dali's romantic relationship with Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, played by Javier Beltran. And perhaps they even grasp that that means that everyone's favorite sparkly vampire will be gettin' down with some boy-boy smooching.
The La Times asked director Paul Morrison the inevitable question, "How hard was it for Pattinson and Beltran to roll around on each other and play tonsil hockey?" and Twilight groupies may be dismayed to hear that Pattinson didn't reach for Listerine after every take: "I think Rob probably found it harder than Javier, to draw the line between performance and, ah, but that...
