The Caped Crusader has a new lease on life. And not a moment too soon.
Back when Ben Affleck’s Batman was first introduced to the world via Zack Snyder’s Dawn of Justice, the brooding vigilante funneled his hate and fiery anger toward Superman, who he believed to be a foreign invader capable of tearing the world asunder without so much as breaking a sweat. And as Jeremy Irons’ Alfred warns, “that’s how it starts. The fever, the rage…the feeling of powerlessness. It turns good men cruel.”
For Justice League, though, it appears Gotham’s Dark Knight will have already exorcized most, if not all of his anger issues, thereby opening up the field for a “more traditional [and] heroic” Batman. Per Entertainment Weekly, Affleck touched base on his character’s mindset going into Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s forthcoming tentpole, and why Bruce Wayne’s lax...

"Captain America: Civil War" abounds in familiar faces fighting amongst themselves, but its most exciting element was a new presence: Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, real name T’Challa. Oftentimes, the best and brightest of our musical talent never get to take center stage as an adoring crowd cheers them to glory. Some of the industry's most talented players happily occupy backstage roles, studio slots or, in the case of the subjects of Scott Rosenbaum's SXSW premiere "Sidemen - Long Road to Glory," careers as sidemen. Rosenbaum's new documentary focuses on some of American music's most skilled (and most unheralded) stars, so-called "sidemen" Pinetop Perkins, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Hubert Sumlin, lovingly bringing the three men's individual and collective stories to the big screen in a toe-tapping, eye-opening new feature. When it skips two books to adapt the fourth in the series with a rebooted cast, apparently. David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was meant from the beginning to be the first in a trilogy, but a mixed reception from critics and audiences along with a modestly perceived box-office haul has kept a follow-up from getting a green light. Apparently expectations were that a hard-r adult thriller running nearly three hours long should have earned more than $230 million worldwide. Stieg Larsson‘s Millennium trilogy of novels had already been adapted into Swedish films, but Fincher’s take on the first volume opened the story up to viewers unwilling/unable to read subtitles. It’s also not a bad film. Cold, dark, and brutally attractive, but not bad. The Girl Who Played With Fire is the second book in the series, but while Sony has already paid a reportedly obscene amount for a script from...

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:25Pm Pt: The majors — Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. — have updated their weekend estimates which are now reflected throughout the story. Some dips from what was originally reported yesterday among Sony and Paramount’s titles, but nothing too earth-shattering. While Gone Girl barely notched No. 1 with roughly $400K more than Annabelle stateside, $37.5M to $37.1M respectively; their spread at the overseas B.O. is wider in their weekend takes with the David Fincher film grabbing $24.5M and The Conjuring spinoff taking $20.7M for the weekend. However, Annabelle has a leg up on Gone Girl since it opened in Russia last weekend, hence the horror film’s total cume is $23.6M, $887K short of Gone Girl’s foreign take. Next weekend, the spooky doll film and the missing chick pic will pull each other’s hair in France and Spain where they bow against each other.

No, I will not be apologizing for that title. David Fincher is having a pretty newsworthy week thanks to the recent confirmation that his follow-up to 2011′s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be another literary thriller adaptation. He’s heading into pre-production on Gone Girl based on Gillian Flynn’s bestseller with star Ben Affleck and an as-yet unnamed female lead, but while that’s exciting news it leaves a couple questions hanging limply in the air. Will we still see the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire hit screens in the near future? And for the love of god can we finally sink the idea of Fincher wasting his time on a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake once and for all? Happily, the answer to both questions appears to be yes. Per The Playlist, Sony is still moving forward with The Girl Who Played With Fire and has even hired Seven...

Those of you who have been hoping for David Cronenberg to direct a true horror film again might just be getting your wish - so long as you don't mind a bit of social commentary added to the mix.
Per THR, Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Sarah Gadon, and Robert Pattinson have joined the cast of David Cronenberg’s next picture, Maps to the Stars, a ghost story and critique of celebrity-obsessed society in Los Angeles.
Longtime Cronenberg producer Martin Katz and his Prospero Pictures shingle are partnering with Entertainment One to finance the indie movie. The screenplay is by Bruce Wagner (Wild Palms). Sentient Entertainment's Renee Tab, Cronenberg's manager, will executive produce with Integral Films’ Alfred Hurmer co-producing.
Maps to the Stars marks Prospero’s fourth collaboration with Cronenberg, most recently on A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis, which also starred Pattinson and Gadon.

Finally some actual footage has arrived from the CBS summer series "Under the Dome," and we have a look at it here along with a few details that came out of this past Saturday's WonderCon panel for the show.
Per TV Guide, executive producer Brian K. Vaughan said the drive of the series is to hopefully answer exactly what the dome is. Though the writers have an idea of how they will eventually conclude this tale, Vaughan notes that it will be different from King's version. But the producers insist that their adaptation is more about peering into the struggles faced by humanity by exploring how people would deal with this situation.
"When you're under those intense circumstances, people's good hearts or evil hearts may come out more than in everyday life, so this intensity under that dome, under that magnifying glass, gives us a chance to really dissect what...

Since making his feature film debut in the 1985 flick Runaway Train, Tommy "Tiny" Lister has worked on over 160 projects, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable character actors of modern cinema.
This Friday, March 8th, Lister's latest film, K-11, will be arriving at limited theaters nationwide. Helmed by first-time director Jules Stewart (Crank: High Voltage, XXX), K-11 also stars Goran Visnjic ("ER," The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Kate del Castillo ("Weeds"), D.B. Sweeney (The Cutting Edge, Fire in the Sky), Jason Mewes (Clerks I & II) and Portia Doubleday (the upcoming Carrie) and follows what happens inside a troubled portion of a Los Angeles correctional facility reserved for the homosexual and transgender inmates. In the film Lister plays Detroit, and while it's certainly not the first time we've ever seen the seasoned actor as a convict, it's perhaps his most nuanced performance to date.

Per THR, Lefevre will play Julia, an investigative reporter who just moved from Chicago to Chester's Mill with her husband, a doctor at the town's medical center. She's baffled by the appearance of the strange dome but more concerned with the whereabouts of her mysteriously missing husband.
She joins the previously announced Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, Open Graves, "Bates Motel"), Dean Norris ("Breaking Bad"), Jolene Purdy (“Glee”, Donnie Darko), Nicholas Strong, Britt Robertson ("The Secret Circle"), Aisha Hinds ("True Blood"), Natalie Martinez ("CSI: NY," Death Race 2008), Colin Ford ("Supernatural"), and Alex Koch.

Hollywood: Where "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" can make $232 million worldwide, receive five Academy Awards nominations and have a ready-made sequel (Steig Larsson's follow-up book, "The Girl Who Played With Fire"), but not have an automatic sequel.
According to THR, plans for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" sequel are still in place, even though director David Fincher is circling an adaptation of "Gone Girl" and star Daniel Craig may have priced himself out of appearing.
That bit of news is most shocking: Craig, who starred as journalist Mikael Blomkvist in "Dragon Tattoo," wants a raise for the sequel after his box-office performance as James Bond in "Skyfall." Per THR, Sony isn't willing to give him a big bump. (Sony also released "Skyfall.") Should negotiations go south, the idea is that Blomkvist could be written out of the sequel, leaving Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander to star.

Side Effects begins with a slow pan moving in on an apartment window reminiscent of the classic opening to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and the comparison to the Master of Suspense couldn't be more apt. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) have crafted a thrilling feature that will be all the better the less you know. That being the case, don't expect too much plot exposition from me. In fact, stop reading now and just go see the movie... that's my recommendation. My press screening invite came with the following notice: "Per studio directive, due to the non-linear nature of the film absolutely no press, guests, etc. will be admitted to the film once it has begun." At the door to the theater a similar directive was laid out that went further, adding that showing up late would make your viewing of the film "unrewarding". I told the press agent,...

From Lisbeth Salander to Amy and Nick? As first reported by Variety, David Fincher may follow-up his work on the adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" with an adaptation of "Gone Girl," Gillian Flynn's pulpy, best-selling novel-cum-required airplane read. Deadline.com -- which, like Variety, is owned by the Penske Media Corporation -- also reported the news.
As Variety notes, no offer has actually been made to Fincher just yet.
"Gone Girl" is Flynn's third novel and her biggest success. The book tells the story Amy Dunne, a Missouri woman who may or may not have been murdered by her husband, Nick, on the couple's five-year anniversary. The twisty thriller has drawn comparisons to "Fatal Attraction" and "War of the Roses."
The news of Fincher's possible involvement puts the future of his "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" adaptation in some doubt. That project, set up at Disney,...

Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...

It's that time, I just finished watching the last film from 2011 I had time to watch before offering up my final 2012 Oscar predictions and I'm glad I did as it is now among my nominees whereas before it wasn't. Tomorrow the 2012 Oscar nominations will be announced and many questions will be answered while new ones will sprout up. Most categories have their clear front-runners, but down near the bottom of each list the potential nominees became a bit hazy not to mention the technical categories where damn near anything can happen. For Best Picture I batted around several possibilities after I got beyond the six films I feel are absolute locks and the idea of just how many films will the Academy end up nominating? This year there can be anywhere from five to ten nominees for Best Picture and we won't know how many there are until tomorrow's announcement.

I would have been all about Joyful Noise this weekend, had I not been suddenly ill. I even had to miss a bestie's birthday dinner. Boo! I think it's worth noting that Joyful Noise had a nearly identical debut to Burlesque in 2010.
Opening Day
Burlesque (11/24/10) | Joyful Noise (01/13/12)
Weekend Gross
Burlesque $11.9 | Joyful Noise $11.3
Weekend Rank
Burlesque #4 | Joyful Noise #4
Theater Count
Burlesque 3,037 | Joyful Noise 2,735
Per Screen Average
Burlesque $3,934 | Joyful Noise $4,148
Given that Burlesque opened during holiday craziness (lotsa movie-going) and Joyful Noise opened in January's dumping ground, you might have to hand this battle to Joyful Noise. But will it be able to beat Burlesque's final gross of $39.4 domestic / $89.5 international? I say this with the caveat that I have not seen it yet but from the stills and trailer it certainly looks cheaper than Burlesque production wise so perhaps it'll turn out a much tidier profit. I can't imagine that it's better than Burlesque though.

On the eve of the Golden Globes last year, there were already definitive battle lines drawn between "The Social Network" (a Sony release) and "The King's Speech" (which was distributed by The Weinstein Company). The knock-down-drag-out clash between the two films is still going on -- just this week, "Social Network" producer Scott Rudin said the Best Picture-winning "King's Speech" was "less complex" than his 2010 Oscar also-ran -- but that didn't stop Sony chief executive Howard Stringer from praising Harvey Weinstein's latest Oscar frontrunner: "The Artist"

In her grand entrance, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) pulls off her motorcycle helmet to reveal a wild, ravishing hairdo and sulks into her employer’s office to meet her client. She does not do this often. She is lonely, socially inept, and emotionally withdrawn. Her job as a freelance hacker keeps her contact with others to a minimum and feeds her secretive lifestyle. Lisbeth has a photographic memory, is extremely intelligent but also admits to being insane, which makes her the perfect heroine to deal with a serial killer. Inspired by Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the Swedish film adaptation of the same name, director David Fincher put his own atmospheric, detailed, and intense mark on the first installment of the Millennium Trilogy in what is surely this year’s most chilling and depressing Christmas film.

Two more names are being bandied about as potential cast members of I, Frankenstein, one of the many Frankenstein projects in various stages of production, and we have to admit that with these additions this film is shaping up quite nicely. Both Underworld veteran Bill Nighy and Australian actor Socratis Otto are in line for major roles in the Lakeshore Entertainment and Hopscotch Features project.
Per Variety Nighy (pictured) is in talks to play a demon prince while Otto would play his compatriot who is tasked with tracking down and capturing Adam (Aaron Eckhart), Frankenstein's monster who is being hunted by demons that want to learn the secret of his creation in order to build an army of reanimated corpse demons.
While we're fairly certain horror fans are well aware of Nighy's background, Otto, who recently wrapped Lakeshore's Amanda Seyfried-led thriller Gone, got his start on the Aussie TV series "Home and Away,...
