It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

As Disney Animation celebrates its centennial, the studio released the trailer for its nostalgic Once Upon a Studio, an animated short that the filmmakers describe as a love letter to the studio, its artists and fans.
During a press preview Thursday, Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee remembered the Zoom meeting during which writers-directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy pitched the story. “I couldn’t talk. I was so emotional,” she said, as Abraham added, “I will never forget that pitch. She made us cry, right from the start.”
It begins with a live-action shot in the lobby of Disney’s animation building, as a young employee chats with Disney legend Burny Mattinson, who joined the studio as a teenager in 1953 and stayed until his death this year.

H.E.R. Way: Why Belle From ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Was a Dream Role for the Oscar-Winning R&b Crooner
A version of this story about H.E.R. and “Beauty and the Beast” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Few multi-hyphenates working these days can claim the take-over of industries quite like H.E.R. In just the last four years, the California native with the signature spectacles has racked up five R&b Grammys, an Oscar (for her stirring “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”) and a Children’s and Family Emmy for a tune from Netflix’s “We the People.” And after her spirited turn as the beloved Belle from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” in ABC’s 30th anniversary special, the Primetime Emmy might be calling.. And here’s the kicker: She’s only 25.

Walt Disney never quite had a “court composer” for his movies, although legends like Leigh Harline, Frank Churchill and Paul J. Smith contributed iconic scores and song melodies to Disney classics from Snow White and Pinocchio to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But for the past three decades, the music in Walt Disney features — and the features themselves — has been redefined to recapture and rebrand the musical, a medium long thought dead in film and even on the Broadway stage. And if there is one man who is largely responsible for this resurgence, it’s Alan Menken.
The composer’s melodies for songs — “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, the title song to Beauty and the Beast, “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas, “True Love’s Kiss” from Enchanted — have become as indelible as anything produced in the world of popular music. Says...

This past summer, Disney and ABC announced that they would be celebrating the beloved animated film "Beauty and the Beast" with a TV special produced by "Crazy Rich Asians," "In the Heights," and "Wicked" filmmaker Jon M. Chu and directed by the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony director Hamish Hamilton. Rather than commemorate the ground-breaking feature's 30th anniversary (which was last year), the two-hour hybrid animated/live-action special will celebrate the anniversary of the movie's Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Regardless of the reason, the Disney renaissance favorite is definitely worth celebrating.
For the live-action portion of the event, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-nominated performer Josh Groban will step into the role of the Beast alongside R&b artist H.E.R. as Belle. Rounding out the cast will be Rita Moreno as the narrator, Joshua Henry as Gaston, Shania Twain as Mrs. Potts, Martin Short as Lumiere, David Allen Grier as Cogsworth,...

As ABC gears up for Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast: A 30th Celebration,” producer Jon M. Chu has confirmed that the hybrid live-action will feature a tribute to Angela Lansbury, who died in October. Lansbury voiced Mrs. Potts in the original 1991 animated feature.
“We definitely do a nod to her for sure. How could we not pay tribute?” Chu says.
The filmmaker, who has begun filming on his two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” offered some more details on the special: “We have some great cameos in this. Paige O’Hara, the voice of the original Belle, has a cameo. Composer Alan Menken does a little appearance.”
The other surprises will have to wait until the special airs Thursday night.
Described as “part animated film, part live-action spectacle,” the celebration features over 400 costumes by Marina Toybina. Chu and the creatives behind the special spoke to Variety about what to expect from the production.

There may be something there that definitely wasn’t there before in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. The original Belle and Gaston, Paige O’Hara, and Richard White, as well as legendary Disney composer Alan Menken, will make special cameos in ABC‘s live-action Beauty and the Beast TV musical on December 15. Blending live-action with animation, the Beauty and the Beast 30th anniversary special airs Thursday, December 15 at 8/7c on ABC. Menken, O’Hara, and White will appear in the opening number, “Belle,” as townspeople in Belle’s “quiet” French village. Grammy-winner H.E.R. plays the Disney princess, with Broadway star Joshua Henry playing Gaston in this iteration. O’Hara will play the bookshop owner who helps keep Belle’s love of reading alive, and White will play the baker who dishes out the memorable line, “Marie! The baguettes! Hurry up!” Menken, meanwhile, will appear to play the piano in one of the songs.

Years before Angelina Jolie’s global superstardom, her aesthetic proved most similar to the “more European look” of Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.”
The 1991 Disney film was released the same year Jolie appeared in Lenny Kravitz’s “Stand by My Woman” music video and four years before Jolie’s big screen debut in 1995 film “Hackers.” Yet Jolie’s looks were the easiest point of comparison when describing the original concept art for Belle in “Beauty in the Beast,” according to voice actress Paige O’Hara.
“She kind of looked like Angelina Jolie — very beautiful,” O’Hara said in the book “Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara,” as excerpted by Insider. “I didn’t see how anybody would identify with that person. You’d look at her and put her on a pedestal. [Animators] changed the look of her. She was a little too perfect.”

The late lyricist Howard Ashman gave us the gift of many of the most-loved Disney songs of the modern era, teaming with composer Alan Menken to write “Beauty and the Beast’s” “Be Our Guest,” “The Little Mermaid’s” “Part of Your World” and “Aladdin’s” “Friend Like Me.” In the new documentary “Howard,” streaming on Disney Plus from August 7, director Don Hahn — who knew his subject well, having produced the original animated version of “Beauty and the Beast” — goes in for a look at Ashman’s life behind the music.

The first trailer for Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was full of wonderful visuals that got fans of the classic animated series really excited about the film. One thing they still haven't shared with us is what the actors sound like when they sing the classic songs.
Well, today we have a brief recording of Emma Watson as Belle singing the song “Something There.” The recording comes from a movie Belle doll at Toys ‘R Us, and it was recorded and posted online by one of the film's producers, Jack Morrissey.
Listen to the audio clip below and let us know what you think. She definitely doesn't have the singing chops as the original Belle, who was voiced by Paige O'Hara, but it'll have to do. Regardless, I still think this will be a great movie that will explode at the box office.

Beauty and the Beast is a tale as old as time. But the story of how the film was made? That legend is best told by the people who worked behind the scenes on the modern Disney classic. In honor of its release on Blu-ray, digital and DVD (and in celebration of its 25th anniversary), E! News spoke exclusively with producer Don Hahn, composer Alan Menken and a trio of voice cast members: Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts), Paige O'Hara (Belle) and Richard White (Gaston). The 1991 movie musical had been stuck in development for decades, as the late Walt Disney and his team of animators couldn't find a way to make the story to work. "Walt tried to develop it but couldn't figure out the second act. It was really about an...

It's a tale as old as time. And at the 25th anniversary screening of Disney's Beauty and the Beast in New York on Sunday, Angela Lansbury surprised audiences with a tune as old as song. The 90-year-old actress - who voiced the role of Mrs. Potts in the 1991 animated film - appeared on stage at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and sang the title song live for the first time in almost two decades. Accompanied by the movie's composer Alan Menken, Lansbury was pitch perfect in the song - even ending with a rendition of Potts' signature sendoff to her animated son,...

Cinelinx has a wonderful thought after watching the Peter Pan: Diamond Edition Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Three British children are transported to Neverland, where a young boy named Peter and his band of Lost Boys do battle with the nefarious pirate Captain Hook. Based on the classic children's novel by Sir James Barrie.
The Delivery
Sir James M. Barrie's classic children's novel about the boy who never grew up has seen a number of incarnations, from the original story to a number of silent film and stage adaptations. Walt Disney's animated version, released in 1953, keeps some of the elements of the original story, with a good amount of Disneyfication (for lack of a better term) thrown in.
The fact that Disney softened some of the darker elements, added musical numbers, and changed a few things is hardly a drawback. In fact, it gives this version just the right personality and distinction.

'When it got Oscar nominated, I went running around the garden in my underwear'
Don Hahn, producer
Beauty and the Beast was one of the last great fairytales Disney hadn't done, so we spent about nine months developing it. It was the late 1980s and we were working with fantastic animators. I thought it was going Ok. We flew to Florida to show it to Jeffrey Katzenberg and the other executives. When the lights came up, Jeffrey said: "Ay-ay-ay, this is not going in the right direction."
This was my first film as a producer and it was horrifying. We brought in new directors, and songwriters Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Howard came up with the idea of having enchanted objects singing and talking, and suggested making the film a fully realised musical. This made it more of a fantasy, so more appropriate for animation. After that, it really took off.

Ben Foster, Contraband According to Deadline.com, this four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend the North American box office could reach $165 million — or up about 4% compared to last year. Considering the disappointing returns in late 2011, a modest increase is good news indeed for the jittery Hollywood studios. Helping things out are the Mark Wahlberg crime thriller Contraband, which earned an estimated $9 million on Friday and may reach $30 million by Monday evening. Box Office Mojo was expecting the film to bring in only $18.5 million. Anyhow, if those early estimates are correct, that's a solid start for a movie that reportedly cost $25 million (not including marketing/distribution expenses). A remake of Óskar Jónasson's 2008 Icelandic hit Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Contraband was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the original film's star-producer. In addition to Wahlberg Contraband features Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, and J.K. Simmons. Disney's 3D-ification of...

For those of us who grew up during the "Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" era of Disney films, the re-releasing of these childhood classics hits on some very nostalgic nerves. At least for this writer, anyway. I have very specific childhood memories tied to all of those animated classics and am looking forward to seeing "Beauty and the Beast 3D" during its limited release (which began today).
Anyway, in thinking about the magic involved in this film - the first animated movie ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar- I can't help but wonder about the talented voice actors who brought the characters to life. Where are they now? Click through to see what the actors who brought Belle, Beast and Mrs. Potts to life are up to now.
Paige O'Hara - Belle: O'Hara, a trained Broadway actress, has been working with Disney since she won the role of Belle.

It was 21 years ago that the story of Belle (Paige O'Hara) and Beast (Robby Benson) flooded into theatres and enchanted audiences with the fairytale story of a small-town girl who, in order to save her kooky, inventor dad, ends up a captive of Beast, a prince under a spell that can only be broken by true love.

Beast (Robby Benson), Belle (Paige O'Hara), Beauty and the Beast The Lion King 3D, a movie originally released in standard format back in 1994, has become the sleeper hit this early fall in North America. Whereas most new releases are bombing right and left, The Lion King 3D has brought in nearly $80 million domestically (it'll pass that mark today) and about $20 million internationally since its rerelease two-and-a-half weeks ago. No one needed an Mba or facsimile to predict that Disney — and likely other studios — would be rereleasing old 2D movies converted to the 3D format. Next in line for Disney are Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and the Pixar titles Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Beauty and the Beast 3D begins its limited theatrical run on January 13, 2012. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and featuring the voices of Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Angela Lansbury,...
