David A. Prior is one of those people who filled up video shelves for us back in the days of Blockbuster. If you’re a normal movie fan, chances are you passed over one of his incredibly generic sounding titles while looking for something else; if you’re a cult movie nerd, then you’ll have probably seen “Deadly Prey” and you might be interested in what happened to him and his actor brother Ted. Either way, hope you enjoy this retrospective.
When you watch the movies of David A Prior, you’re struck by the sense that, like so many famous / notorious low-budget directors, his personal obsessions are aired out over and over again. They feel more personal than the sort of thing you’re going to see at a multiplex, and while that doesn’t make them good, it at least makes them interesting.

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
Kirsten (Julie Austin) and her two friends meet in the woods for the inaugural meeting of the Sisters of Anti-Christmas. The holiday is over commercialized and insincere, plus they got lame gifts last year and it doesn’t look like it’ll snow this year. As far as real problems, Kirsten’s home life is a mess. Her dad is dead, her mom (Deanna Lund) hates her with a fiery passion, little brother is a pervert and Grandpa might be a Nazi.

Sledgehammer
Written by David A. Prior
Directed by David A. Prior
USA, 1983
Genre movies from the early 80s were characterized by two distinct cultural events. First off, there was a glut of slasher films trying to capitalize on the success of Halloween and Friday the 13th. A lot of these copycat movies found a home in the burgeoning home video market, theatrical run be damned. That same VHS technology was now available to the layperson, allowing them to basically shoot and cut their own movie with tapes you could buy at a Radio Shack. This confluence of newly-available tech, a thriving home video market, and a collective cinematic bloodlust was the perfect storm that bore Sledgehammer, a compulsively weird Friday the 13th rip-off shot on VHS for next to nothing, and for good or ill, does nothing to camouflage it.
The film’s story line is fleshed out just enough...

Deadly Prey (1987) Director: David A. Prior Stars: Ted Prior, David Campbell, Cameron Mitchell A group of human-hunting mercenaries picked the wrong man to mess with. Deadly Prey might be the best action movie ever made. Sure, it's just a Rambo retread and yet another adaptation of Richard Connell's "Most Dangerous Game." But what this film lacks in originality it makes up for in mulleted, bare-chested men in cutoff denim shorts kicking ass and taking names....

With the demise of the drive-in theater rose the behemoth home video industry – and a torch was passed from one era of low-budget directors and producers to a new batch of underfunded fringe filmmakers. These fresh faces had new technology, and a new distribution game… but a similar reckless abandon and rebellious tenacity as their b-movie forefathers.
Fright fans were introduced to a new breed of horror movies - made for tens of thousands of dollars… or thousands of dollars… or a few hundred bucks and a borrowed video camera. Unpaid amateurs / quasi-professionals made up the bulk of most casts and crews - and often, the directors and producers were quite inexperienced themselves.
Join me for a visit to the heyday of the direct-to-video, micro-budget horror movie. We’ll explore this strange new cinema of the 80s and see how it evolved through the ‘90s. (Be sure to adjust tracking for best picture quality.

Survival is not an option. Living is not an option. Well, we finally have an exclusive clip from David A. Prior‘s horror movie Night Claws (aka Apex Predator), and I definitely recommend you to check it out. You already had a chance to watch the first trailer & poster for the whole thing, and today it’s time for us to see Bigfoot in some action! As you’re going to see this creature is definitely blood thirsty, vicious and kills without warning and without discrimination…
David A. Prior directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Fabio Soldani which is set in a small town terrorized by a killer Bigfoot. This creepy creature kills without warning, and is on a rampage near that small town.
This is not your ordinary Bigfoot. This creature is lightning fast, is incredibly strong, and seems to thrive on not just killing but tearing people apart as well.

We have another exclusive for you cats. On tap right now is an exclusive clip from Night Claws, the latest sliver of Sasquatchploitation which is available now on DVD from Midnight Releasing. It asks: What would you do to get away from a monster?
What if Yor, the Hunter from the Future (Reb Brown), Sharon Stone's lesbian lover from Basic Instinct (Leilani Sarelle), the star of a host of 80s/90s made-for-video action b-movies (Ted Prior), the King of the Kickboxers' girlfriend (Sherrie Rose), and Sylvester Stallone's brother (Frank Stallone) got together to star in a new Sasquatchploitation flick called Night Claws from the director of such horror movies as Killer Workout and Mardi Gras for the Devil (David A. Prior)? Throw in traditional special effects (i.e., No CGI!) from Bruce Larsen and Bill “Splat” Johnson, and you have a recipe for old school Bigfoot mayhem.

Mankind is on the menu… Well, the last time I heard something about this movie, the title was Night Claws, and I think that tagline was something like – living is not an option, or whatever. The most important thing for you to know is that this is actually the same movie which comes from director David A. Prior but now has a completely new title – Apex Predator! Today we have a pretty cool trailer and poster for the whole thing, so make sure you check it out!
So, in case you’re not so familiar with this horror movie, I will first inform you that David A. Prior is also responsible for the script, which he co-wrote with Fabio Soldani. The movie has some interesting cast on board which includes Frank Stallone, Leilani Sarelle, Sherrie Rose, David Campbell, Ted Prior, Tara Sanford Kleinpeter and Alissa Koenig.

It would be easy to dismiss Night Claws as just another low budget Bigfoot movie, but if you’re a lover of b-movies then the pedigree behind this latest piece of Sasquatchploitation makes it a must-see.
I first reported on this movie back in April of 2011 and I feel compelled to repeat a paragraph I wrote back then explaining why the film is a b-movie lover’s wet dream:

If you’re too young to have experienced the aerobics craze of the 1980’s, consider yourself lucky. On the plus side, hot girls in leotards and spandex. On the negative side, pretty much everything else. Also on the plus side, slasher movies about burned and scarred tanning bed victims killing gym members with a giant safety pin.
David A. Prior has spent most of his direct-to-video filmmaking career writing, directing, and producing b-action flicks with titles like Operation Warzone, Hell on the Battleground, and the all-time bad action movie classic Deadly Prey. Prior got his start in the horror genre, and one of his first features was the 1987 melding of slasher flicks and the aerobics craze of the time: Killer Workout aka Aerobicide.

If last year’s The Thing remake taught us anything, it’s that CGI just can’t beat good old-fashioned practical FX, especially when dealing with a creature feature. And for those who thought the Sasquatch’s day in the horror-movie sun was over, here’s Night Claws to say not Yeti. Directed by David A. Prior (Sledgehammer, Deadly Prey, Killer Workout), and starring a cool retro cast headed by Reb Brown (Yor, Hunter From The Future, infamous MST3K fave Space Mutiny) and Frank Stallone, Night Claws harks back to the days of bloodletting Bigfoot flicks such as 1982’s Night Of The Demon.

I'm not sure why, but in the 1980's people sure seemed to have a thing for sledgehammers. There was Peter Gabriel's song, a TV series, and even a San Diego theatre group that formed late in the decade. But before all of that was writer/director David A. Prior's 1983 film Sledgehammer, the topic of this week's Motion Picture Purgatory.
Starring Ted Prior, Linda McGill, and John Eastman, Sledgehammer tells the tale of a young boy who murders his mother and her lover with a hammer. Ten years later a wave of teenage murders plagues the same area.
Intervision Pictures Corp. released this first shot-on-tape slasher movie for the home video market this past May featuring an audio commentary with director David A. Prior, audio commentary with Bleeding Skull creators Joseph A. Ziemba and Dan Budnik, "Hammertime" featurette with Destroy All Movies!!! author Zack Carlson, "SledgehammerLand" featurette with Cinefamily...

Sledgehammer
Directed by David A. Prior
Written by David A. Prior
USA , 1983
How should I put this nicely? Sledgehammer is quite possibly one of the worst films ever made. In terms of cinematic quality, Sledgehammer is what a Michael Bay film would look like without a budget. Sledgehammer is so terrible that its director, David Prior, is ashamed of it.
For the unfamiliar, Sledgehammer is an obscure, rarely-seen straight-to-video 80′s slasher film. It is one of the era’s most easily forgotten titles, and would be completely lost to history had it not been labelled the first direct-to-video full-length feature shot entirely on home camcorder. For that reason, true connoisseurs of such VHS-era exploitation stuff will try to convince you it has some redeeming qualities.
Sledgehammer represents an endurance test of bad filmmaking, from the porn-worthy performances of the entire cast, to the repulsive dialogue, horrible lighting, cringeworthy camera work and incredibly juvenile plot.

Look, if David A. Prior (Deadly Prey, Night Wars) can pick up a camcorder, cast his former Playgirl centerfold brother Ted Prior (Deadly Prey, Born Killer) as the lead in his unapologetically unexplainable horror film, and start a 30 year movie career in the process, then I reserve the right to do whatever the fuck I choose with the rating system when writing about Sledgehammer. All week long I’ve been talking to my friends about how much I miss the old VHS format. Yes it was incredibly inconvenient to rewind the tapes once you were done watching the film, and yes it was a pain in the ass when you had to adjust the tracking, but DVD cover art has never once come close to matching that of the video cassette boxes we once collected. There is just something about VHS, that I’d rather showoff my collection in my living room than those Blu-rays or DVD’s I’ve collected over the years. Maybe it’s just because it reminds me of when I was younger but regardless the following news is pretty awesome.
Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, has decided to launch their very own VHS label called Mondo Video, and their first release comes out this week,...

For the better part of two decades, three letters defined home entertainment: VHS. The video format carved a very important niche in movie history and then, in what seemed like an instant, disappeared. Phrases like "video stores," "be kind rewind," "tracking" and "late fees" were simply removed from the film geek lexicon. Thanks DVD. As most of us threw out our Vcr's in favor of the newer, cheaper, more reliable format, others were simply too attached and invested. They craved the days when buying a movie wasn't as cool as getting a blank tape and recording off HBO. As it stands now, VHS is a dying - and therefore collectible - format. Best known for their incredibly popular posters, Mondo has decided to bask in that '80s and '90s nostalgia and launch their very own VHS label called Mondo Video. Their first release comes out this week, the...

What if Yor, the Hunter from the Future, Sharon Stone's lesbian lover from Basic Instinct, the star of a host of 80s/90s made-for-video action b-movies, the King of the Kickboxer's girlfriend, and Sylvester Stallone's brother got together to star in a new Sasquatchploitation flick called Night Claws from the director of such horror movies as Killer Workout and Mardi Gras for the Devil?
God willing the wait to answer that question won't be too long. Maybe you don't share my enthusiasm, but as a man with an unabashed soft spot for killer Bigfoot movies, the works of David and Ted Prior's Action International Pictures output, and several of the names announced for the cast, Night Claws is already high on my must-see list.
Undead Backbrain brings word that b-moviemaker David A. Prior is back in Alabama (where most of his past movies were filmed) to bring...

I have to admit, I've never seen the 1983 slasher film Sledgehammer, but now I have a chance thanks to Intervision Pictures Corp.. According to Retro Slashers, the start-up distributor plans to release the movie to DVD on May 10. I'm excited about this release because Sledgehammer was directed by David A. Prior, who directed one of my favorite slasher movies Killer Workout.

And the obscure horror films from the 80′s keep on comin’. Intervision is releasing this “lost” slasher from 1983 onto DVD on May 10, 2011.
Have you ever stuffed an entire sandwich into your mouth? Have you ever poured a bottle of alcohol over your head? Furthermore, have you ever been stalked by an unending evil in the claustrophobic confines of a righteously depressing haunted condo? In slow motion? No? Then welcome to Sledgehammer! Heralding the revolutionary roar of shot on video (Sov) horror at the dawn of the 1980s, Sledgehammer is the gore-soaked saga of seven party animals, their trip to a haunted house, and their ensuing battle with an ultra-creepy, flannel-wearing, sledgehammer-wielding behemoth. In other words, it’s everything you want out of a Sov slasher complete with Bill Murray impersonations! Helmed by writer-director David A. Prior (Killer Workout, Deadly Prey) and starring Ted Prior, David’s iconic trash-superstar sibling, Sledgehammer is Sov nirvana,...

from David A. Prior What a week it's been for obscure horror films of the 80's! First Blue Underground announced that they were finally going to bring The Nesting to DVD & Blu-Ray. Then I found out Code Red is intent on bringing Ghostkeeper from New World Home Video to DVD. Now aspiring filmmaker Clint Kelly has announced that the forgotten and truly obscure slasher Sledgehammer from director David A. Prior (Killer Workout) is making its way to DVD May 10, 2011. One of the first films to be shot on VHS camcorder, Sledgehammer was known for slow motion shots and for capturing an atmosphere that was unintentionally funny, bizarre and creepy all at the same time.

David A. Prior, a director with around thirty credits, directed the cheese fest that is 1986's Killer Workout (aka Aerobi-cide) which was released by the now defunct Academy Home Entertainment. Academy Home Entertainment is the same company responsible for other low brow horror films like Mirror Mirror, Bloody New Year, Witchcraft and a seemingly never ending series of sequels, and many other horror titles. Say what you want about Killer Workout, but it sold on the world wide market and was a seemingly successful entry into the slasher genre. Killer Workout stars Marcia Karr and Teresa Van Der Woude. Here is what David had to say on Killer Workout.
So who is David A Prior and what are you all about?
Born in Newark, N.J. Grew up in Baltimore. Went to Los Angeles at 20 years old just to get away. I got hired to be an extra in a movie and started to think,...

It's films like Chester Turner's Black Devil Doll from Hell that truly make me miss the bargain basement production value of 1980's camcorder horror. Whether or not we're talking about Wally Koz's 555, David Prior's Sledgehammer or this, there's something appealing about these awkwardly crafted video endeavors.
Black Devil Doll from Hell faded out of the video circuit faster than most, which is why I couldn't believe it when I saw an email about a looming DVD release come flooding into my inbox:
Anyway, this sucker will be debuting on DVD come October 26th, 2010. Specs are as follows:
Collector's edition Lenticular 3D Cover for the first 1000 sold Audio commentary by Art (Ultra Violent Magazine) Ettinger and Louis (Massacre Video) Justin! Special bonus feature, Chester Turner's Tales From The Quadead Zone (first time on DVD!) Liner notes by Greg Goodsell Trailers
If you can't wait, pre-orders for the disc are beginning on Monday,...

Your Hands Are Bleeding! Your Hands Are Bleeding! Lee Demarbre Talks About His New Film Smash Cut
Lee Demarbre, the Ottawa-based talent behind Canadian cult films Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter and The Dead Sleep Easy turns in his most self-reflexive work to date - a tribute to pioneering exploitation director Herschell Gordon Lewis set in the unsympathetic world of contemporary independent filmmaking!
Grindhouse titan David Hess (The Last House On The Left, House On The Edge Of The Park, Hitch-hike) stars as Able Whitman, a down-on-his-luck horror filmmaker subject to relentless mockery from obnoxious critics and jaded audiences alike. It seems that nobody likes his latest film Terror Toy, or finds its killer – a foot-high clown named 'Bobo' – very believable. After a car accident with no witnesses leaves a stripper friend dead and in pieces, Whitman is struck with a revelation - he'll use real body parts in his film!

I'm sure there are many of you out there wishing lightning really would strike and electrocute the Sci-Fi Channel - or at least some of its executives. I'm afraid that is not what this headline is about. It's a reference to a new original movie in the works over at Sci-Fi titled Lightning Strikes, about a paranormal creature lurking within the lightning that's holding a town hostage.
