Stereophonic became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history Tuesday, scoring a surprisingly strong 13 nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards, including acting nods for almost the entire cast. Several other shows also saw most of their leading roles nominated, including Days of Wine and Roses, which closed early but still saw nominations for its leads Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James, as well as Merrily We Roll Along, which saw nominations for its three leads, Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.
Stereophonic also landed a best score nomination, a bit unusual since the production is a play, but it features original songs written by ex-Arcade Fire member Will Butler for the fictional band at the center of the story. While the songs in the play have been praised, the nomination is a bit atypical given that most of the songs featured in the musical are delivered in snippets,...

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

Could Invincible be getting more seasons on Prime Video? According to Skybound Republic, an investment/crowdfunding site that allows fans to invest in the label, more episodes of the ultra-violent comic book action series are coming. In a since-deleted portion of the webpage, the site said Invincible Season 3 is in production, while the show had been renewed for Seasons 4 and 5. The webpage promotes a video game set in the Invincible universe, which fans can help fund. The crowdfunded project sits at $442,700 as of this posting, with 14 days to go in the campaign.
A portion of the mission statement for the campaign describes why making a video based on a licensed property causes some problems:
“Most crowdfunded video games are centered around indie games, and retail investors rarely have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of Aaa game publishers. Skybound is developing a highly produced, high-octane blood bath that is anything but indie.

Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. While the Big Easy was still shaking off a slight springtime chill, my horror-loving heart was heating up as I rode the escalator to the third floor of the Canal Place mall: home of the sprawling food court, the terrific Prytania Theaters, and, for this weekend, the official headquarters of the “summer camp for genre fans,” the 2024 Overlook Film Festival!
Taking that second escalator up to the third floor is akin to ascending to horror nirvana, as I was immediately immersed in all manner of the macabre: the Vinegar Syndrome table of essential physical media waited on my right, the Super Yaki merch table of eerie apparel lied straight ahead, and must-see screenings lurk around every corner. After meeting up with fellow Daily Dead team members Jonathan and Christy, we headed to our first screening of the fest: I Don’t Understand You. Ezra Miller’s role in Prime Video’s Invincible has seemingly been recast in the wake of the actor’s controversies leading up to the release of The Flash.
In season one of the animated series, Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, voiced District Attorney Sinclair, a genius who attended Upstate University and believes that human weaknesses can be solved by engineering. After being defeated by the Invincible team, he returns in this week’s episode of season two, “I’m Not Going Anywhere.”
This time around, however, it appears the mad scientist is no longer voiced by Miller but instead by Eric Bauza. The actor has more than 350 voice credits, including X-Men ’97, Krapopolis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Rick & Morty.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Miller’s rep and Prime Video for comment.

Although he has made some memorable on-screen appearances, Ezra Miller’s career seems to be on a downward spiral, as the Hollywood actor has been fired from yet another major project. Namely, when the seventh episode of Amazon’s adaptation of Invincible aired, titled “I’m Not Going Anywhere”, the character of D.A. Sinclair appeared once again, but unlike season one, he was not voiced by Ezra Miller anymore. This came as a sort of surprise for everyone, as it had not been announced that Miller was fired from the series. The character is now voiced by Eric Bauza.
The second part of Invincible‘s second season premiered on March 14, 2024, after a several-month break and no information about Miller being recast had been released; Deadline has contacted Amazon, but no official statement has been released regarding this change in the voice cast of the series.

It appears Ezra Miller was quietly recast as mad scientist D.A. Sinclair in Season 2 of Prime Video’s Invincible.
Miller voiced the character in one episode in the first season of the adult animated series, but when Sinclair appeared in the March 28th episode, the character was voiced by Eric Bauza.
Deadline has reached out to Prime Video for comment.
Miller, embattled star of The Flash and Fantastic Beasts, has been embroiled in multiple scandals. Last year, they pleaded guilty to unlawful trespassing in a burglary case in Vermont after cutting a plea deal ahead of the hearing. In 2022, Miller agreed to mental health treatment after a string of run-ins with the law.

A Simple Favour 2 is moving forward at Prime Video, with director Paul Feig and stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively all making a return.
A Simple Favour did decent business relative to its outlay in 2018, grossing $97m worldwide on a $20m budget. Paul Feig directed the darkly comic mystery about a vlogger (Anna Kendrick) who investigates the disappearance of her elegant (and enigmatic) new best friend (Blake Lively).
A sequel has been in development for years; Simon Brew spoke to Feig about the first film on the Film Stories podcast in 2018 and discussed the sequel when Feig was our guest at a live podcast recording in 2022.
We also have a synopsis for the sequel, per Deadline:
In Part Two, we see the return of Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman.

“Be gay, do crime” exhorts a popular internet meme, a suggestion that married writing/directing duo David Joseph Craig and Brian Cano take literally in I Don’t Understand You, an Italy-set travelogue of errors in which a little bit of bloodshed is just a speed bump on the journey to getting what you want.
Nick Kroll (Big Mouth) and Andrew Rannells (Girls) star as Dom and Cole, prospective parents in the running to adopt from a ready-to-pop birth mother, Candice (Amanda Seyfried) who is eager to find the right couple to raise her unborn child, but still undecided. Having suffered through the process going awry once, the husbands are reasonably nervous about their shot this time around, but head off on a romantic Italian vacation to take their mind off things and celebrate their tenth anniversary. Swanning around Italy like side characters from the second season of “The White Lotus,” well-to-do gay couple Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells) have decided the world is against them. As Americans, they live at a time in a country when they can legally get married, adopt and do pretty much everything straight people can — but they’re also old enough to remember when that wasn’t the case, and so they anticipate rejection and homophobia at every turn. They’re prepared for the worst, and somehow they attract it.
Loosely inspired by filmmakers Brian Crano and David Craig’s bumpy road to fatherhood, catty black comedy “I Don’t Understand You” depicts a stretch in Dom and Cole’s relationship when everything seems to be going their way … until suddenly it doesn’t. While celebrating their anniversary in Italy, the pair get the news that the baby they’ve...

Adopting a baby can often be a long and grueling process. Finding a child up for adoption or an expecting mother who feels she’s a match is not for the faint of heart. So, when we first meet Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells), it’s hard not to have sympathy for them. Celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, the couple has spent three years attempting to start a family with little luck and, as we’ll eventually learn, a bit of tragedy thrown in for good measure.

What a time to be alive for superhero fans. We have '90s "X-Men" throwbacks to cater to the Millennial demographic, "Deadpool & Wolverine" is already shattering records and is about to become the obsession of every Ryan Reynolds-loving normie you know, and even "Madame Web" came through to deliver the early aughts superhero disaster you never knew you needed.
In the midst of it all is "Invincible," the Prime Video animated series that has quickly become a darker, edgier, and more violent alternative for fans who can't quite get their fix from Marvel or DC on the big screen. Now in its critically acclaimed second season, the show doubled down on the blood and gore in the continued adventures of Mark Grayson. The final half of “Invincible” is nearly here, and Prime Video has released the first trailer for the bloody finale to Season 2.
Season 2 Part 2, which consists of four episodes, begins streaming on Prime Video on March 14 and will release each episode weekly.
Part 1 released back in November and ended on several cliffhangers, with Invincible, aka Mark Grayson, bumping into his father Omni-Man, who tried to kill him in the Season 1 finale, on an alien planet. The tense reunion got even more awkward when Omni-Man revealed he had fathered a child with one of the insectoid alien members. Together, Invincible and Omni-Man barely defeated three Viltrumite attackers, who took Omni-Man back to their base and ordered Invincible to prepare Earth for takeover.
The Season 2 Part 2 trailer teases even more bloody, limb-snapping, intergalactic action. Invincible returns to space and must handle an invasion from the mind-controlling, parasitic aliens seen in the first season.

Broadway box office held fairly steady last week, with Sweeney Todd‘s post-Groban slide at least partially offset by gains from most other shows. In all, the 25 productions grossed $24,615,726 for the week ending January 28, about 4% greater than the previous week.
Attendance was up about 5% to 217,847.
Box office for Sweeney, which recently saw the departures of original stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, was on the decline for the second consecutive week, down about $19,000 to $776,081. Attendance at the Lunt-Fontanne was at 90% of capacity, but a low average ticket price – $81.97 – kept total receipts modest. The trend likely will slow or stop with the February 9 arrivals of starry replacements Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster.
In the final week of its limited run, Gutenberg! The Musical! set a house record at the James Earl Jones Theatre, taking in $1,462,227 and playing to standing room only crowds. Producers announced yesterday that the musical, starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells,...

Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour are back together and they’re making Devil Wears Prada jokes!
The 41-year-old Oscar-winning actress and the 74-year-old Vogue editor-in-chief made a cameo appearance together in the Broadway musical Gutenberg on Wednesday night (January 10) in New York City.
Gutenberg stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells as two musical theatre writers who are putting on a reading of the new musical they wrote called “Gutenberg.” They joke in the show that there are Broadway producers in the audience and hopefully someone will want to produce the show by the end of the reading. At every performance, a celebrity makes a surprise appearance as the “producer” who agrees to bring the show to Broadway.
Anne and Anna were the guest producers on Wednesday and it was a hilarious moment, all of which was caught on video.
