‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The article contains spoilers for "Drag Me to Hell."
It looks like a particular cursed button might be making life hell for someone in the future. According to a recent Reddit Ama with Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Sam Raimi, the creative team of the upcoming movie "65," the possibility exists for a sequel to the 2009 Raimi horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Even as a person who isn't always the biggest fan of horror films — not because they aren't incredible, but because I'm a huge 'fraidy cat — this was one I loved. The idea of a return to the curse of a woman punishing someone for lacking compassion is intriguing.
"Drag Me to Hell" starred Alison Lohman as a young woman named Christine who works in a loan office. She wants a promotion, and to get it, she has to demonstrate her ability to be tough. Unfortunately, her current...

The horror genre is no stranger to divisive endings, eliciting extreme reactions from audiences who find them either fittingly devastating or pointlessly brutal. Take 2007's "The Mist" as an example, where the conclusion is a hopelessly bleak one, underscoring the tragedy of the deaths that could have been completely avoided. Irrespective of how you feel about this Stephen King adaptation, the ending of Sam Raimi's "Drag Me To Hell" still manages to shock with its unflinching brutality.
Crafted as a morality tale, "Drag Me To Hell" subverts the conventional trope of a happy ending, where the protagonist is literally dragged into the bowels of hell when we least expect it. There is no attempt at justifying such a shocking fate, as Raimi cuts to the title card immediately, reiterating that he intended to remain true to the word of his title all along. This opens the avenues for various...

Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage follows the story of Sinbad (Shahin Sean Solimon, who also co-wrote, directed, and was executive producer for this atrocity) the Sailor who fell in love with the Sultan’s daughter, Zoreh (Lorna Raver). While Sinbad doing his sailing thing, the Sultan throws a pre-wedding party for Zoreh involving a magician able to summon demons amongst other things. From his modest start in that ramshackle cabin in the woods what must seem like a lifetime ago, Sam Raimi has become one of the more versatile and beloved directors in Hollywood. With Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Darkman today, we bring you our Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise.
We're going to keep this list to films directed by Raimi. If we were to include the movies he's acted in, or god forbid produced, we'd be here all night. But a few of his production credits like 30 Days of Night, both of The Grudge films, Boogeyman, The Possession, Timecop and of course the Evil Dead remake are noteworthy.
Some honorable directorial mentions include his most recent, Oz the Great and Powerful. It might not have been the epic it was billed to be, but it looked fantastic; and when you manage to haul in half a billion...

The telephone has a sordid history in cinema, dating back to Dial M for Murder and even earlier, and creepy callers were the subject of a previous FEARnet feature (if you missed it, be sure to check it out here). As we all know, any time the phone rings in a horror film, you can be sure that it’s Satan on the line. Part of what makes telephone calls in horror films so frightening is that the viewer typically cannot see who's tormenting the film’s protagonist. It’s the same basic idea as the unseen perpetrator; we fear that which we cannot see. Therefore, the telephone has been used for many a game of cat and mouse... and to terrify countless babysitters. In honor of one of the most nefarious tools of terror horror cinema has to offer, we count down eight of the most terrifying phone calls in horror.

This auspicious feature debut from fresh out of film school filmmaker Sam Raimi – shot on 16mm in the woods of Tennessee for around $350,000 – remains a benchmark of modern horror. While many will argue the sequel is far more entertaining, The Evil Dead works far better as a straight up horror film. It actually received a X rating, was banned in many countries, and was later cited as a video nasty. It’s been almost 30 years since The Evil Dead debuted in 1981- and since than, it has spawned two sequels, a reboot, and launched the career-defining role for Bruce Campbell. Despite a Fede Alvarez-directed reboot coming along in April, Sam Raimi has recently announced that he and one of his brothers are finally working on Evil Dead 4.

The humble telephone has often been used to great effect in the horror genre. There is something inherently creepy about a disembodied voice at the other end of the line. A number of films have set their whole premise around the nuisance call; When A Stranger Calls, One Missed Call and not forgetting the Scream movies. Brit director Matthew Parkhill and writer Sergio Casci throw a time bending twist into their phone based horror The Caller, released on Blu-ray and DVD today, with stars Rachelle Lefevre, Stephen Moyer and Ed Quinn, all better known for playing vampires in True Blood and the Twilight Saga.
The Caller follows newly divorced Mary (Rachelle Lefevre) as she moves into a new apartment to start a new life. She begins to receive phone calls from a mysterious woman she first dismisses for a wrong number but as the calls continue Mary eventually begins to...

There are some horror films that assault your senses from the get-go and then there are those that are slow-burning, teasing out the story until an inevitable horrific conclusion – The Caller is most definitely the latter. Seemingly playing out like a movie of the week melodrama for half of its running time, the film follows divorcee Mary (Lefevre) as she moves into a new apartment with the hopes of getting on with her life without her abusive ex-husband (Quinn). Starting a new relationship with the charismatic John Guidi (Moyer), she begins to receive phone calls from a mysterious woman called Rose.

Ring, ring. Better pick up the phone. maybe not after watching this Twilight Zone inspired thriller. The Caller is a film that takes its low budget and provides genuine chills, especially considering that the villain is a disembodied voice from the past. Mary Kee (Rachelle Lefevre) is in the middle of a divorce from her controlling husband Steven (Ed Quinn). He.s not too happy that Mary has moved out into a new apartment, but he appears to be even madder that she took the dog with her. Her new apartment is a bit run down and even sports a rotary dial phone. One night she get a call from a lady named Rose (Lorna Raver) looking for...

There are probably stranger, scarier things in the universe than a mystery woman from the past who can cross the space-time continuum to obsessively call your home telephone for hours and days and weeks on end. But the idea is plenty creepy as the premise of "The Caller," director Matthew Parkhill's indie thriller starring "Twilight" villainess Rachelle Lefevre and "True Blood" vamp Stephen Moyer.
In "The Caller," Puerto Rico resident Mary Kee (Lefevre) moves into a new home following a nasty separation from her abusive husband ("Eureka's" Ed Quinn), only to find an even more harrowing nemesis in Rose (Lorna Raver), an unhinged and disgruntled woman living in the late 1970s. Rose somehow has the ability to call Mary's new...

Samuel Goldwyn Films' suspense thriller The Caller is headed to select cities this Friday, August 26th. Directed by Matthew Parkhill from a script by Sergio Casci and starring Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight, New Moon), Stephen Moyer ("True Blood", Quills), Ed Quinn ("True Blood", "Eureka") Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights) and Lorna Raver (Drag Me To Hell), the film centers around a recent divorcee who starts receiving some seriously needy and deranged phone calls on the old-timey landline in her new apartment. Originally set to film in New York, the movie instead set up shop in Puerto Rico to take advantage of the territory's tax incentives and the assistance of the local film commission. The subsequent plan was to shoot San Juan and pass it off as New York, but the filmmakers wisely decided to take full advantage of the exotic local flavor...

With Twilight’s Rachelle Lefevre and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as its leads, The Caller has a cast out of vampire crossover fan fiction, but it’s a more straightforward kind of horror. Actually, two kinds. The film, directed by Matthew Parkhill of Dot The I from a screenplay by Sergio Casci, marries a realistic threat to its main character, a fragile, freshly divorced woman, with a preposterous supernatural one. For a while, the two ominous elements play off each other promisingly, and then it all becomes ridiculous, despite an appearance from the excellent Lorna Raver, the malevolent gypsy ...

Coming to a ridiculously select amount of theaters on August 26th 2011 from Samuel Goldwyn Films is The Caller starring Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight) and Stephen Moyer (True Blood). The casting may sound like a gimmick, but this is not a supernatural tween drama trying to capitalize on the popularity of it's stars. Director Matthew Parkhill's charming and downright flawless horror thriller is just the opposite. This is a film with authentic style and a keen sense of foreboding excitement and organic storytelling that has become all too rare in modern horror cinema.
Mary Kee (Lefervre) is a beautiful young woman who moves into a new apartment while going through a nasty divorce from an abusive husband so persistent that she has to get a restraining order. There's a lot of fun to be had with Matthew Parkhill's latest film, a horror/thriller centered on a woman who has just left an abusive relationship and moved into a new apartment when she starts getting mysterious phone calls which turn deadly serious. The film is a b-movie in the very best tradition, and I was surprised just how much I enjoyed it and how well it holds together over ninety minutes.
Mary (Rachelle Lefevre of Twilight fame) is in the middle of a difficult divorce from a violent husband when she moves into a slightly grotty apartment block and begins a course at night school. One evening the phone rings and a woman on the other end asks for a man called Peter, to which Mary responds that he doesn't live here.

Telephones have long been a staple of low-budget thrillers. Despite its more prosaic title, when The Caller started I anticipated something along the lines of Sorry, Wrong Number or When A Stranger Calls, or perhaps the telephone scenes from Black Christmas (‘it’s meeee, Billy’). But when the movie declared its intentions, it was a little bolder than I expected: the person on the other end of the line, this time, claims to be calling from the 1970s.
Though not wholly original (the basic concept was used, to non-horror effect, in Frequency) this intriguing concept sets up a pretty neat little B-movie. The central character is called Mary, played by Rachelle Lefevre, and the movie begins with her moving into a new place after escaping from an abusive relationship. Her ex-husband still pesters her, despite a restraining order, making ominous, threatening remarks. She receives a phone-call...
