While the perils of higher education are becoming a wider part of the conversation, namely its lack of guarantee and exorbitant cost (particularly in America), solid academic preparation for the future is still often a ticket to a more expansive life. In Tubi’s “Boarders,” created by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Daniel Lawrence Taylor, five Black teens from London’s inner city uproot their lives for the opportunity to attend St. Gilbert’s College, a prestigious boarding school in the U.K. Though the scholarship recipients are eager to begin paving a new path for themselves, the constant othering, feelings of isolation and fetishism begin coloring what should be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Black students experience gutting racial and economic adversity, but the brilliance of “Boarders” is its ability to weave a rhythmic humor throughout the series.
Before I get into the specifics of “Boarders,” first a note about its curious origins.

In the British teen dramedy Boarders, five Black students of great intelligence, but modest means, are given scholarships to the elite private school St. Gilbert’s. Their presence has little to do with altruism, and a lot to do with the school’s PR problem, after a rich white student posts a video of himself and his friends harassing an unhoused man. Gus (played by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who also created the series) runs the charity that helped select the five lucky kids, and while all of them are aware...

A good high-school or college TV show is like a time machine, designed to transport nostalgic older viewers backward to youth or (more rarely) younger viewers forward to an anticipated maturity. At the same time, it’s a sufficiently codified genre that the nostalgia is as much for other fictional favorites in the same narrative space as it is for any “real” experience of high school or college.
A well-cast high-school or college TV show is a time machine on yet another level, enjoyable in its immediacy but also a preview for decades of future ensembles. Even if the breakouts from a Freaks and Geeks or Sex Education or Dear White People aren’t always the stars you’d expect, one needn’t watch more than a scene or two to know how well-populated those shows are.

It's been a long wait, but Happy Valley's third and final season finally premieres Monday, May 22, on Acorn TV, AMC+, and BBC America.
As has been teased in the teasers and trailers, we're in for another edge-of-the-seat thriller from start to finish.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at Happy Valley Season 3 Episode 1, and it's a great indicator of what's to come.
The clip features Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) being quizzed about another crime, and he's somehow scarier than before.
The role has been a change of pace for Norton, and he plays the darkest shades of Royce's personality to perfection.
Undoubtedly, he'll cause many problems for Sft Catherine Cawood throughout the last-ever episodes of this hit series that has been off the air since 2016.
Yes, after a seven-year hiatus, we're being treated to a compelling new mystery, filled with shocking twists and turns.

It’s almost the end! The finale of Happy Valley – meaning the last ever episode given that this is the last ever season – is just around the corner, with the penultimate chapter airing this week. Lucky for us, it’s a doozy.
Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) is a newly free man with a plan, but Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) – who is already facing family dynamics almost as messed up as a Greek tragedy – won’t let him go easily.
Ouch
With Tommy on the loose, it’s time to board up the doors and lock up the windows for Catherine and co. Good thing Nev (George Costigan)is such a hospitable host. Finally! After almost seven years, Happy Valley is back, and this BAFTA-winning crime drama’s third and final season is set to be as nail-biting as ever. These six fresh episodes from writer Sally Wainwright are definitely worth the wait.
Series Three dives back into the action around five years after the explosive events of the Series Two finale, beginning with Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) discovering the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, a discovery which will lead her all the way back to her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).
Catherine still lives with her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) who’s now sixteen and working out what kind of relationship, if any, he wants with Royce, the man who fathered him when he raped Catherine’s daughter Becky. Needless to say, Catherine won’t take this well.
Still battling with the local drug problem,...

Sally Wainwright’s “Gentleman Jack” is almost back for Season 2 on HBO.
The Suranne Jones-starring show about real-life historical figure Anne Lister — who lived in Yorkshire in the 1800s, and who was known not only for defying societal stereotypes about women and business, style of dress, and all manner of things, and who kept a coded diary of her romances with women — returns next month, HBO confirmed Thursday. The network also dropped a brand new teaser.
In the video clip, someone calls Anne “gentleman Jack” to her back, a nickname she got for her style of dress, prompting a shocked face from Jones.
It also hints at the drama ahead across its eight episode second season as Anne and her wife, the wealthy Ann Walker (they said vows together at home), as they try to carry out their relationship in private, but with society trying to invade their business.

The BBC and HBO have teased a set of first look images for the second season of Sally Wainwright’s Gentleman Jack.
The images include lead Suranne Jones as Anne Lister and Peaky Blinders’ Sophie Rundle as Anne Lister’s now wife.
The second series from BBC Studios-owned indie Lookout Point will see Anne Lister and Ann Walker move in together in Lister’s Shibden Hall home as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates, which is quite the move in the mid-nineteenth century.
Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with her Halifax hometown on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.
Season two will again use the real life diaries of Anne Lister, part of which were written in code.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the pinnacle of what is wrong with the modern day blockbuster. The second of an intended five installment franchise in J.K. Rowling’s prequel series to the enormously critically acclaimed and well-received Harry Potter franchise, the film showcases the delinquency behind such a saga which has already buckled under the enormous pressure of anticipation and efficient story.
David Yates film undoubtedly wears a docile heart on its bland sleeve. It has moments through its running time that evoke a semi-engaging emotional provocation: through small incidents of character and relative significance of political ignorance, that unfortunately plagues the audience after the fact.

HBO has released an intense trailer for their upcoming three-part miniseries called Gunpowder, which tells the story of British activist Guy Fawkes. The series follows Fawkes and his team of provincial English Catholics as they plan to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I in the early 17th century.
This miniseries looks really good and it has a solid cast that includes Kit Harington, Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss, Derek Riddell and Liv Tyler.
Even though Guy Fawkes has become the main name associated with the Gunpowder plot, thanks to V for Vendetta, he actually played a minor role in it. Warner Bros. may have all hands at the pump in anticipation of Justice League – November 17th is the date for your diaries – but it appears the studio is now beginning to make preparations for another fantasy-fuelled epic: Fantastic Beasts 2.
Pegged to arrive late next year, the Harry Potter spinoff has bolstered its ranks quite considerably over the past few months, adding Jude Law (the young Albus Dumbledore) and Wolf Roth as a character called Spielman, along with Victoria Yeates, Derek Riddell and Brontis Jodorowsky (El Topo, Endless Poetry), the latter of whom is attached to play Nicolas Flamel.
That’s a character who will be overly familiar to Potterheads, given his instrumental, if indirect role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. If you’re in need of a history lesson, Flamel was the alchemist who discovered the elusive Elixir of Life, which would later fall into the hands of Quirinus Quirrell,...

Was the BBC drama Gunpowder, in the end, a horror story?
It finished as it began: with torture and death. Anybody who knows the first thing about Bonfire Night could tell you that was going to happen. I’m glad that the director, J Blakeson, applied the same principles to these last difficult scenes as he did to the ones that kicked off the series. There was no looking away from what the state was capable of. The camera was steady as it gazed upon the decapitated head of Catesby (Kit Harington), placed outside parliament as a warning to all.

What better way to pep up Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 than to cast the son of an actual magician as Philosopher’s Stone creating alchemist Nicholas Flamel? That’s probably why Brontis Jodorowsky, son of Alejandro Jodorowsky, has been cast as the character. Now, you may be asking yourself, “who the hell is that and why should I care?” which is understandable given that his film career to date has largely consisted of very strange, arthouse movies directed by his awesome dad (who’s seriously a straight-up magician).
First seen as a child in the original midnight movie El Topo back in 1970, Brontis has more recently played his own tyrannical grandfather in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s two autobiographic movies, The Dance of Reality and Endless Poetry, in which (in my humble opinion) he was downright amazing. Despite that, the audience for Jodorowsky’s typically bonkers fare is a bit limited,...

With three episodes still to go, The Missing series two shifts its story in an unexpected direction. Major spoilers…

2.5 Das Vergessen
TV rule #37: when a background character is gifted with some lines and a personality, they’re either about to cark it or be unmasked as the baddie.
For guitar-playing, Einstein-quoting romantic Jorn Lenhart, it was the former. Shockingly (though admittedly staged with restraint) his investigation into missing third girl Lena Garber led him to the wrong end of a cordless drill. No more crush on Eve. No more double act with Julien. No more Hilde the parrot anecdotes.

The Ripper Street series 4 opening two-parter is ambitious, confident, and very much back in business...
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 The Stranger's Home
In Ripper Street’s finale last series, we were left with our heroes scattered and in quite an array of situations. For Matthew Macfadyen’s Edmund Reid, it was something of a happy one, recovered from his near fatal gunshot wounds and reunited with his daughter to carve out a life together by the sea. Drake (Jerome Flynn) was left in charge of H Division with Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) still in his employ. Susan (MyAnna Buring) languished in Newgate Prison, awaiting her death sentence, due to be carried out after the birth and nursing of her son.
It’s now 1897, a big year for both the history of Great Britain and culturally speaking too. It’s the year of Dracula, Oscar Wilde’s release from prison and,...
