Over the past few weeks, I’ve been highlighting some of the newer publishers, including Vault Comics, AfterShock Comics, and It’s Alive! Press.
This week I’m covering Scout Comics and Ben Kahn. Ben had self-published a comic titled Heavenly Blues which I had picked up a while back at Carmine Street Comics here in Manhattan. Since then, Scout Comics has picked up the series. I got the chance to talk with Ben about his comics career and having Heavenly Blues added to Scout Comics growing roster.
Jc: Thank you for taking the time to chat with me about your new series at Scout Comics, Heavenly Blues! Before we get started, you’re a fairly new face to comics, at least in terms of being Diamond distributed. Can you tell us a bit about your writing career leading up to this?
Bk: Of course. Heavenly Blues is my first series handled by Diamond,...

A couple of years ago we shared an amazing series of art that comic artist Jim Rugg did on spiral notebook paper using nothing but ballpoint pens. Every piece was packed with an insane amount of detail and depth, as well as a hypnotic amount of color. I hadn’t seen anyone really attempt to create worthwhile art on notebook paper since. That is, until I came across the work of artist João A. Carvalho, who mostly skips the color but adds a whole new level of dimension with his faux notebook paper art. Carvalho uses subtle shading and manipulates blue notebook-style lines to create the illusion that his 2D drawings are popping off the page.
I’m not sure if Carvalho drew wide rule or college rule sized lines. I do know, though, that his teacher is going to be super pissed that he didn’t write his name...

Before "tentpole" and "franchise" became two of Hollywood's favorite words, sequels were far less common than they are now. But let's say they were—what would that look like? Billing itself as "part tribute and part cultural commentary," Sequel is an upcoming art show featuring the work of a number of artists imagining movie sequels that never were. Hosted by Los Angeles based art gallery and production studio iam8bit, the ultimate purpose of the show—besides being an excuse to show off some really cool art—is to question Hollywood's obsession with sequels, and ask a question: Should we or shouldn't we?...

Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #1
Written by Joe Casey
Art by Nathan Fox, Jim Rugg, and Ulises Farinas
Colors by Brad Simpson
Published by Dynamite Comics
Towards the end of his life, the legendary Jack Kirby created Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers for the defunct Malibu Comics. With a special blessing from the Kirby family, Dynamite obtained this characters and can create new stories with them. Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #1 is the best drawn Dynamite book that I have read, and Fox, Rugg, and Farinas’ distinct art styles blend well. Joe Casey’s plot is fast-paced and filled with new characters, conflicts, and concepts. But he keeps the exposition to the minimum and immerses readers in this strange new world where Battlestar Galactica-style space battles can co-exist with a crime ridden New York City and a rusty planet with scrappy aliens and drones that is...

“Jelly Wars Part Two”
Written by Eric M. Esquivel

Shmowzow! Adventure Time #28 is sadly less than mathematical.
Adventure Time the cartoon is a work of inspired foolishness set within a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. Adventure Time the comic book may have the same setting but it’s foolishness is anything but inspired. Forced would be a more accurate term.
The first story in Adventure Time #28 is a bland Ghostbusters ripoff featuring a group called the Ghost Destroyers. The Ghost Destroyers are summoned by Princess Bubblegum to catch Finn and Jake after they become ghosts. Comic book artist Jim Rugg (Street Angel, Afrodisiac) has an art show in Los Angeles on May 25 at iAm8Bit. What makes this showing special is that it features nothing but one-of-a-kind ballpoint drawings on spiral notebook paper. The show is called Notebook Nerd, which features pieces from Drive, Total Recall, Pulp Fiction, Bad Lieutenant, Friday the 13th, Sexy Beast and other pop culture pieces.
Check out a bunch of the art below. The Total Recall piece is Nsfw: Notebook Nerd by Jim Rugg will open from 7-11 p.m. on May 25 at iam8bit, 2147 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. If you live in La, I highly recommend you check it out.

Last weekend this year's Small Press Expo was held just outside of Washington, DC. Spx is an annual convention celebrating the little guys in comics. Most of the creators exhibiting at the show are self-published. Some of them have been lucky enough to have found a small publishing house to print their book for them. Some of the people end up going places. Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley used to exhibit there, for instance. In other cases you may encounter a neat comic that you will literally never see again if you don't purchase it at the con. This year cameraman Barry Worthington and I wandered around and interviewed anyone who would talk to us and wasn't being mobbed by attendees. It seemed to be one of the busiest SPXs I have attended. The embedded video below included conversations with Chris Yura (Two Italian Guys), Michael Auger (contributor to...

Some weeks are like this, Internet: you struggle to fill your largely ignored weekly comic book column with new, interesting releases that aren’t tie ins to crossovers or being made into movies, but some weeks you just clutter the week with Batman. And that’s okay, because Batman is awesome and superhero comics are good. The world just shouldn’t revolve around them. But this week they can, because two awesome Batman books are coming out in the same week. Batman, Batman, Batman.

Landline TV honed in on unexplicably popular MTV reality TV series Jersey Shore for its latest spoof, opting for a cast of little kids to take on the roles of Pauly D, The Situation, Jwoww and the gang in Little Jersey Shore. They weren't the only ones, as celeb Michael Cera had a little Jersey Shore makeover of his own. [Comedy.com] The Guild comic, written by the show's creator-star Felicia Day and illustrated by artist Jim Rugg, has had its first few images (right) leaked out on the internet today, thanks to Comic Book Resources. Issue #1 The Guild comic from Dark Horse Comics hits stores on March 24, 2010. [Comic Book Resources] Former Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich is going to have his own late night web series. The graphic novel, One Model Nation by C. Allbritton Taylor and Jim Rugg, the fictional, industrial rock band of the same name becomes the voice for rebellion in post-war Germany, 1977. The story follows the quartet, resembling a militarized version of The Beatles, while embedding them in the fabric of a politically-divided German society. They become linked to the Raf (the Red Army Faction), a group of leftist ‘urban terrorists’, who in their earliest incarnation were referred to as the Baader-Meinhof Group. Historian, Donovan Leitch, culls significant details from this tumultuous period in history, providing Taylor with enough material to weave a mesh of reality and fictional drama. Like a blob suddenly grow a skeleton, this column found a structure. So welcome to The All New, All Different This Week in Comics, where every comic corresponds to a day (with sometimes-helpful descriptions of what each day means).
Monday – First Issues Existence 3.0 #1 (of 4), $3.50
(Nick Spencer/Ron Salas)
Image Comics
Despite having never read the previous series, Existence 2.0, I’m a bit interested in Existence 3.0. It’s a sci-fi comic (not nearly enough of those) published by Image Comics (who publish lots of quality comics) and features something called “consciousness transfer technology.” To become a better writer, I need to come up with about a dozen alternate ways to say “Sold!”
Tuesday – New Manga Day Slam Dunk Volume 7
(Takehiko Inoue)
Viz Media
There’s not a lot of sports manga that makes it to the states even though there’s tons of it in Japan, so let’s take a look a Slam Dunk,...

Image Comics will release historical fiction graphic novel One Model Nation later this month, the publisher has confirmed. Created and scripted by newcomer C. Allbritton Taylor with illustrations from Jim Rugg (Afrodisiac), the book takes place in Germany in 1977, following the exploits of industrial electronic band One Model Nation. "It's about a fictitious industrial electronic band in 1970s Berlin," Rugg told Cbr. "It's set against the historical backdrop of the Red Army Faction, and in particular the Baader-Meinhof Gang. "Basically, the band and the terrorists both influence the youth culture of the period, and the authorities have a hard time differentiating (more)...
