Part of me is in complete disbelief that the release date of Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums will have been a decade ago next month. It doesn’t feel so long ago that I was sixteen years old, seeing it for the first time in a movie theater and spending my subsequent Christmas with The Ramones, Elliot Smith, and Nico playing on repeat in my car (two years later, after hearing of Smith’s death, my friends and I gathered together and watched Richie Tenenbaums’s (Luke Wilson) attempted suicide with new, disturbing poignancy). And ten years on, even after having seen it at least a dozen times, and armed with the annoying ability to know every beat and predict every line, something about Tenenbaums feels ageless and fresh at the same time. But when you look at the movie culture that came after Tenenbaums, the film’s age begins to take on its inevitable weight...

Beyond sharing a first name, there isn't much that Wes Anderson and Wes Craven have in common. But what if it had been Anderson who had tackled Craven's 1996 hit horror flick "Scream"? This amateur video suggests there would be a lot of slow motion, pensive stares, existential quandaries, French speaking, off-screen narration, questions about cheese and, naturally, Elliot Smith's "Needle in the Hay." Check it out below:...

The Skin I Live In
Directed by: Pedro Almodovar
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet
Running Time: 1 hr 58 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: October 21, 2011 (Chicago)
Plot: A scientist (Banderas) uses the body of another woman (Anaya) to try to recreate the entire body of his dead wife.
Who’S It For? Anyone who has seen an Almodovar movie will have an idea of what to expect from tone, including the movie’s “telenovela” tendencies. Fans of psychological dramas might be sucked into this movie, so long as they are patient with its step-by-step storytelling. However, there’s no guarantee for anyone as to how the ending will settle with you.
Expectations: Outside of Banderas and Almodovar, I knew little about this movie. Those two names were all I needed to dive curiously into the director’s followup to the quite good Broken Embraces.
Scorecard (0-10)

Composer, producer and all-around virtuoso Jon Brion is working on the score for a new stop-motion animated thriller titled ParaNorman. Made by the same people behind 2009’s Coraline, ParaNorman follows a 13-year-old boy who can speak to the dead on a mission to save his town from zombies. Casey Affleck, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin and John Goodman are signed on to do voice acting. As a composer, Brion has written music for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I ♥ Huckabees, and as a producer he has worked with Kanye West and Elliot Smith....

Not only has Terrence Malick make a few damn good movies, he can make a damn good trailer [1] and if you have dinner with him, he might give you a damn good ending to your movie. In an recent interview, Matt Damon told a story of how he and eventual Oscar-winning writing partner Ben Affleck requested a dinner with Malick when they were working on the script for Good Will Hunting. Malick, who was good friends with Affleck's godfather, granted the request but didn't read the script. Instead, Damon and Affleck told him the story and Malick gave a piece of advice that made the ending. Read the full quote after the jump as well as how Rob Reiner contributed to the story and how the death of a major character was written into the script. Damon told the Malick story in an interview with journalist Tom Shone [2] (with...

For some, Fall is a time of great beauty and nostalgia, a boon for the sartorialist who can finally break out favorite jackets and scarves. Others are less thrilled, perhaps victims of some primal human apprehension about the coming of winter. One thing is certain, it's a season of greater introspection after the wanton abuses of summer. It's also a great time for music as all the vapid pop hits of the sweltering months fade out and people give more airplay to music with a bit more depth.
Digging through my records for Halloween weekend, I decided it was time for the ultimate Fall playlist -- and the following list is a distillation of that. I dispensed with most of werewolf tunes and tried to focus in on that hazy Autumnal groove, with a touch of foreboding. Consider it a list of costume ideas as well, I've already seen one...

You may have already heard, but the latest absurd casting rumor for the tentatively called Man of Steel (title, also a rumor) is Natalie Portman as Lois Lane, joining the ideas of Zachary Levin and Jon Hamm, among others, as Superman. It's the sort of casting rumor that one could logically connect because of Darren Aronovksy's rumored connection to direct, and his recent working relationship with Portman in the Oscar-contending Black Swan. That is to say, it's a rumor connected to another rumor, and it's all based upon a a hearsay suggestion.
But it could happen. Weirder things have. But the likelihood is on par with these other casting rumors of recent years that, theoretically, haven't been ruled out, as there has been no official casting on any of the below projects.
5. David Tennant, Daniel Radcliffe, Jack Black, or Tobey Maguire as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. (Hero Complex) (Latino...

Villagers Becoming a Jackal (Domino) Villagers (né Conor J. O’Brien) is an emotionally frail Irish singer-songwriter steeped in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and following in the footsteps of his closest 21st century peer, Bon Iver. (I’d bargain that O’Brien has a good amount of Elliot Smith at home, too.) O’Brien, who plays the majority of the instruments on Becoming a Jackal, is deft in segueing from cathartic ballads accompanied by harrowing string arrangements to old-fashioned folk with soothing organs. The 27-year-old’s debut is poised and well wrought and just the kind of record that any small-town intellectual, midwestern soul, or urban wayfarer can relate to. Verdict: Buy it...

The Independent Film Festival of Boston kicks off on Wednesday. If you're in the New England area, this is the best film festival around, having supplanted the fall Boston Film Festival as the one to be at after less than a decade of existence. It offers a great opportunity to see a lot of great independent films, a few of which are premieres, and several of which played earlier at Sundance or at South by Southwest. IFFBoston, however, offers a more low-key opportunity to see those same movies without having to deal with the massive crowds or the lengthy lines. Even two days before the festival begins, you can still purchase tickets and walk up, half an hour before showtime, and get a seat. Most of the films play in Davis Square (in Somerville), which is the second best neighborhood in metro Boston, save for Brookline (where some of the other films will be showing,...

Academy Award winner George Clooney “gives the performance of his career” (Lou Lumenick, New York Post) in the smart, funny and thought-provoking film Up In The Air coming in for a landing on DVD and Blu-ray March 9, 2010 from Paramount Home Entertainment. Called “the movie of the year, the movie of the moment” (Tom Carson, GQ) and named by over 200 critics as one of the top 10 films of 2009, Up In The Air tells the story of a man discovering that life is not simply about the journey alone, but about the personal connections made along the way.
Co-written and directed by Oscar nominee Jason Reitman (Juno), Up In The Air received six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick), Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film has already won a Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay and dozens of critics...

Closing credit songs -- it's the last thing you hear as you leave a theater, and can very often influence your opinion of a movie slightly one way or another. Take Avatar as the most recent example -- even if you liked the movie, how incredibly off-putting is it to leave a huge action spectacle to the song-stylings of Leona Lewis' "I See You." (If you're going to make a song that ear screeching, go all out: Get Celine Dion. You already spent $500 million on your movie, another $1 million ain't gonna hurt.)
But there are also really bad movies that can occasionally redeem themselves ever so slightly with a decent closing-credit song -- I don't know how many terrible romantic comedies I see where the closing credit song is actually the best part of the movie (bonus points for blooper scenes, which tend to be the funniest part of...

In celebration of the final season of "Lost" premiering Tuesday, Feb. 2 on ABC, iTunes has launched character playlists.
We're curious as whether or not you guys think these lists fit the characters. We happen to think Kate's fits the best, plus it's also our personal favorite list of songs. We also would've included "Born to Run" for her.
Kate's Tracks: Lost Ep: A fugitive on the run, the strong-willed Kate Austen has a tumultuous past.
1. "Cherry Bomb" (The Runaways)
2. "Crazy" (Patsy Cline)
3. "Jack of All Parades" (Elvis Costello)
4. "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (Rod Stewart)
5. "Another Nail in My Heart" (Squeeze)
6. "Bad Medicine" (Bon Jovi)
7. "Somebody I Used to Know" (Elliot Smith)
Sawyer's Tracks: Lost Ep: Con man James "Sawyer" Ford at first was self-centered and disliked, but he becomes a trusted, courageous leader.
1. "Hair of the Dog" (Nazareth)
2. "Bad Moon Rising (Live)" (John Fogerty)

Athens band Dead Confederate is offering a free download of their new LP, Dirty Ammo. You can also pay $1, which the band will donate to help rebuild The Georgia Theater, the Athens landmark which burned down in June. All seven tracks of the album’s grungy Southern rock were recorded at The Earl in Atlanta in May 2009. In addition to four live versions of previously released songs, Dirty Ammo includes one new song, “Guns” and covers of Elliot Smith’s “Roman Candle” and Officer May’s “Smoking a Minor.”...

To me, it’s fitting that in our lengthy conversation, actor A.J. Bowen tells me he was close to answering the phone with Tom Atkins’ famous line, “Thrill Me.” With his phenomenal facial hair (which I open the interview with) and true talent showcased in our beloved genre, I can see him attaining the heights of that classic ’80s hero. This Friday, Ti West’s much anticipated House Of The Devil reaches theaters (you can currently check it out on VOD, and you should!) where you can see Bowen in a relatively small but integral and very fun role. Punch drunk in love with the film since I saw it earlier this year at Tribeca and a huge admirer of Bowen’s excellent work in The Signal, I knew I’d have to get him talking about it all. So read on, and get excited about the lumberjack resembling future of horror,...

Kevin Smith completed his Twitter marathon today, and there were fellow Twitter-Wood feed faces like Richard Kelly and Brian Posehn there to meet him at the finish line. The Twitter-Wood report likewise congratulates him on his 24-hour Q&A session and wishes him sweet dreams while he re-adjusts to a normal sleep cycle again.
Emmy Rossum seems to be the new "Full House" star Twitter-Wood reports over the last week. You can probably chalk that up to my affinity for Counting Crows. I slipped in two more tweets on her performance with them in Central Park today -- this time with video links. Honestly, I could have made a complete report just between her and Kevin Smith today, but I did throw in Shannon Elizabeth's birthday pic, a Hollywood confession and a Twitter Pic of the Day featuring human size extremes. Enjoy!
