Molycorp's rare earth mine will finally re-open in California by the end of the year, thanks to co-financing by a Japanese company.
North America's largest rare earth mine--and the only one in the United States--will finally re-open for business by the end of the year after an eight-year hiatus. The re-opening is prompted, largely, by stiff competition from China, the world's leading supplier and exporter of rare earth metals.
The mine is located in Mountain Pass, California, and is owned by Molycorp Minerals; the re-opening is made possible by a capital partnership with the Japanese firm, the Sumitomo Corporation.
This news follows a political mishap wherein a Chinese fisherman roamed into contested waters, the Japanese detained the fisherman and the Chinese halted all exports of its rare earths to Japan. That caused Japan, in turn, to frantically look elsewhere for the goods, and the world to wake up to the...

Author Stephen King has had several of his books turned into movies, but a couple of those movies are now going to be made...again. Variety reports that Universal Pictures is looking to remake 1984's Firestarter, with hope being that the reboot could become a "franchise property."
The original movie starred Drew Barrymore as a young girl named Charlie McGee who could start fires with her mind, and was based on the 1980 King novel of the same name. The report claims that the Firestarter reboot script from Mark L. Smith (Vacancy) will only be "loosely based" on King's novel, with the Charlie character to be "reinvented with a little more edge."
"We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances," said producer Martha De Laurentiis. Smith is currently working on the script for the movie,...

Universal Pictures and producer Dino De Laurentiis' production company (Red Dragon, Assassins) have teamed to reboot the 1984 horror film "Firestarter," based on a Stephen King tome, and have hired Mark Smith (Vacancy) to write the script. The original movie starred a 9-year-old Drew Barrymore as a girl able to start fires at will. It grossed $17 million at the domestic box office. Although there were no sequels developed (besides the unrelated TV film "Firestarter 2: Rekindled"), the studio aims to turn the reboot into a franchise property. The goal is to begin filming in 2011. "We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances," said Martha De Laurentiis, who has taken over Dino's company after his death last month. De Laurentiis company has a slew of other projects in various stages of development, including a reboot of the cult classic "Barbarella,...

French director Pascal Laugier's Martyrs is the latest foreign horror movie to be remade, joining recent imports like the 2007 Spanish horror movie Rec, which was remade into 2008's Quarantine, and the 2008 Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In, which was remade into this year's Let Me In. However, the American remake will still have an European touch.
