The animated version of Rowan Atkinson’s silent slapstick sitcom Mr Bean is to return to television for a fourth series in 2025.
Mr Bean must be one of the most well known comedy characters on the planet. Relying entirely on Rowan Atkinson’s rubber face, slapstick and visual humour, Atkinson first wrote the show with Richard Curtis and Robin Driscoll almost 35 years ago.
Premiering in 1990, Mr Bean ran for just 15 episodes, with stories typically following a formula of the hapless title character trying to accomplish a seemingly simple task and escalating it to farcical levels. Memorable moments include a dangerous diving experience, putting his swimming trunks on without removing his trousers and, perhaps the most iconic sequence from the entire series – getting a turkey stuck on his head. In 1997, the character went to America in the feature film Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie, which was directed by the much missed comedian Mel Smith.

On Wednesday, the entertainment icon Tina Turner died at the age of 83 at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland. Though her recording career slowed down this century, she continued to tour until 2009. And you have to work pretty hard to not have a familiarity with her biggest hits.
The singer-actress-dancer-activist born Anna Mae Bullock and famously raised in Nutbush, Tennessee won eight Grammys out of 25 nominations as a solo artist, including Record of the Year for “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” and another Grammy plus three nominations with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner. She was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and a Kennedy Center honoree, and the recent Broadway musical “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” was nominated for a Tony Award in 2020. For a while, she was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for headlining the largest ticketed concert in history: 180,000 people in Brazil...

This isn’t about favorites. Favorites are flimsy and can be overdone, like a song or a sandwich filling you tire of after choosing it one too many times. This is about rightness. Of all the Doctors in the Tardis, of all the Bonds in the Aston Martin, of all the Batmen in the Batsuit, there’s one that feels more right to you than the rest. They’re in technicolor while everybody else is in black and white (speaking figuratively if it’s William Hartnell).
Maybe they’re the one you first fell for as a kid, or maybe they’re the newest hire who made everything finally click into place. The point is that they’re yours, an actor in a role that is unchangingly, enduringly right.
You know your Bond, you may well know your Doctor and own the accompanying action figure/reproduction Sonic screwdriver. But who’s your on-screen Santa?...

1982 was a big year for telly addicts in the United Kingdom. After so many years of making do with just three terrestrial channels, we were finally getting a fourth that promised fresh, diverse, innovative, and challenging programming. They called it ... Channel 4. Not the most original name, granted, but it would offer a far edgier alternative to the staid Auntie Beeb (BBC1 and its artsy sister channel BBC2) and the safe light entertainment of ITV, not to mention greater variety.
After months of hype, the fledgling broadcaster lived up to its bold promise, generating plenty of headlines and predictably drawing the ire of the ever-enraged moral crusader, Mary Whitehouse. It was awesome and became my go-to channel in my teens but, as a kid, it caused me a lot more legwork switching between stations at my family's behest in the days before remote control became a regular thing.

To mark the release of Restless Natives, out now, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Fans of Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero would do well to add Restless Natives to their collection. First released in 1985 this spirited, establishment-mocking caper movie remains a much-loved and thoroughly enjoyable comedy gem featuring a soundtrack by Big Country. It’s the story of two under-employed Scots who achieve wealth and notoriety as modern-day highwayman holding up coachloads of tourists wearing a wolf and a clown mask and armed only with a puffer gun! Their exploits make them a bigger tourist attraction than the Loch Ness Monster, much to the annoyance of the inept local police.
Starring Vincent Friell, Joe Mullaney, Ned Beatty, Bernard Hill, Mel Smith and directed by Michael Hoffman from a script by Ninian Dunnett, the new Blu-ray and DVD release comes with additional features including a new...

Despite our best efforts to remain upbeat and optimistic, there hasn’t been a great deal to laugh about during lockdown. But that is all about to change because Lily Collins and Simon Pegg have generously teamed up to make this year’s daftest thriller. And it is a Corker.
Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins) is a principled and driven District Attorney with one agenda; to take down corporate corruption one dodgy broker at a time. After refusing to have her head turned by the lure of her wealthy family’s political ambitions she disappointed her judgemental father by marrying a man who valued decency above power.
Lauren believes she has time to win her father’s approval and is basking in the glow of another potential courtroom triumph when a baying mob of reporters break the news that the resolute Monroe patriarch is dead. In shock, she returns to the...

Fans of zombie apocalypse movies, comics and television series could get an in-depth probe into the genre now that AMC has failed in its attempt to get a copyright lawsuit again Fear The Walking Dead dismissed.
“AMC Defendants’ request for judicial notice that certain concepts are generic further demonstrates that Defendants’ motions are essentially motions for summary judgment,” writes federal Judge Lucy Koh of the efforts of the cabler, Twd creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Productions, Twd and FearTWD Ep Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment and Kirkman business partner David Alpert to quash comic series creator Mel Smith’s claim that Season 2 of FearTWD was lifted from his zombies at sea Dead Ahead comic.

AMC are embroiled in yet another big bucks legal battle involving the lucrative The Walking Dead franchise but this time Frank Darabont doesn’t have anything to do with it, at least not yet.
The cable network, Twd creator Robert Kirkman and his Skybound shingle, Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment and executive producer David Alpert are all among those named in a copyright suit from Mel Smith that says the second season of Fear The Walking Dead was lifted from his Dead Ahead comic series. “Within the last three years, defendants, and each of them, infringed plaintiff’s copyright in Dead Ahead by, among other things, broadcasting or otherwise exploiting the second season of Fear The Walking Dead,” says the succinct complaint filed in federal court in California this week (read it here). “Portions of that season’s 13 episodes were copied from plaintiff’s copyrighted literary work Dead Ahead.

If it wasn't for a copyright lapse on The Night of the Living Dead, the 1968 George Romero movie, perhaps the zombie literary genre might not have flourished as it has in the past half century. But a screw-up that caused the landmark film to enter the public domain has provided some room for other authors to put their own spin on the undead hungering for human flesh. Now, however, Romero's descendants are attacking each other in court.

TV is usually the first portal for horror when you’re a kid. At least it was for me; pre internet horror was found either: a) at the movies, b) in comic books, or c) the idiot box. And before we were allowed to see big screen horror, TV scratched that itch. Saturday mornings had Scooby Doo, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, and various other shows, animated or not, to quench our growing curiosity for the weird, creepy, and unusual. But if we were lucky enough to be able to watch after 9 pm, things got much more interesting.
Terrifying stories of miniature monsters, witchcraft, Satanism, and creepy cults awaited our bloodshot eyes. TV was absolutely inundated with horror, channels dripping with malicious behavior in the form of weekly shows or made for TV movies. Of course, the networks (the big – and only – three: ABC, NBC, and CBS) back then had...

The question is what, exactly, this spoils. For a vocal contingent of Game of Thrones' viewership, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch resurrection by the sorceress Melisandre, as seen on last night's episode, taints the whole damn thing. And to faithful book-readers, the 11th-hour resurrection takes the wind right out of author George R.R. Martin’s sails, showing us something that...

‘American Graffiti’contains the blueprint for the themes and characters that would pervade Star Wars
George Lucas is a master at building worlds. The one that comes to mind is far, far away but four years before Tatooine, Lucas built a planet of a different sort. It was full of deadly moving vehicles, sweeping music, and young men struggling to find their way. If that sounds like Star Wars, that’s because it is; American Graffiti is an American classic. It also contains the blueprint for the themes and characters that would pervade Lucas’ famous space trilogy.
American Graffiti is a coming-of-age story where time and place play leading roles. Set in his hometown of Modesto, California, 1962, the film is a vivid recreation a lost time in the director’s life. It’s a time when Cokes cost ten cents, boys had cooties and the main event on a Friday night was a sock hop. High school grads Curt, Steve, John and Terry are on the brink of adulthood.

Since its release in 1987, The Princess Bride has built a devoted following – nowhere more so than in the Freeman household. Hadley Freeman takes her family along to meet its dashing star Cary Elwes
Back in 1987, my mother took my little sister Nell and me to see a new movie she’d read something about in a newspaper: The Bride Princess, she thought, or maybe the The Princess Bride. This movie ended up changing my sister in a way that can only be described as profound. Before seeing The Princess Bride, Nell refused to wear dresses and didn’t much like books; afterwards, she relaxed the tomboyish dresscode and she read William Goldman’s extremely funny original novel, The Princess Bride, so many times that she got told off at school for bringing it in too much.
The reasons Nell loved The Princess Bride exemplify, I suspect, why it has become...

Rowan Atkinson lets his disastrous actions speak louder than words as the much-loved TV hero goes large. Biscuits! Cookies! Gingerbread! It was crunch time (sorry) in the Great British Bake Off tent this week as the remaining eleven contestants weathered three dastardly Biscuit Week challenges - but who went crackers and who jammie dodged an early exit (oh God, we're sorry)...
The signature challenge - biscuits for cheese
First up, the bakers all had to create 36 savoury biscuits to go with cheese ("cheesier than an Abba tribute band at a fondue all night bash", Sue ordered). We figure that turns out as 396 biscuits in total. Mary's cheese and wine nights must be pretty epic.
Nancy had to get used to using in-date ingredients. "I used three teaspoons of fennel at home and that was spot on, but I think it was probably out of date," she confessed, to Mary's pursed lips. Who doesn't have forgotten, out-of-date herbs at the back of their cupboard, though? This is possibly...

Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...
Feature
Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

The red carpet has been rolled, the stars are sleeping off their hangovers. Here are our top takeaways from last night's Baftas
• Winners in full
• The ceremony as it happened
Stephen Fry has got gummy
Maybe it's that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have ruined us for everyone else. Maybe it was because the broadcast didn't start until after the watershed, so we'd expected more bite. But Stephen Fry calling Emma Thompson "a ghastly piece of stinking offal" and describing Captain Phillips as "Saving Mr Hanks" didn't quite seem to cut it like it might have in 2002. There was the odd glimmer of the old wit: slagging off Jeff Pope's grammar, telling us he was so moved by Oprah in The Butler he nearly gave his the afternoon off. But Fry's own suggestion that Steve Coogan should take on the mantle seemed the sanest thing he said all night.

"When you read about the scene you see this mania for authenticity," says Joel Coen, describing what enticed him and his brother Ethan into making Inside Llewyn Davis, a film about folksingers in Greenwich Village just before Bob Dylan touched down and took off. But Coen isn't really praising the folksingers' authenticity – it's their mania that fascinates him. In the very next sentence he goes on: "You have these guys like Elliott Adnopoz, the son of a neurosurgeon from Queens, calling himself Ramblin' Jack Elliott. In the film we have...

Disney Theatrical Productions and famed film scribe William Goldman are teaming for a stage production based on "The Princess Bride".
Goldman penned the 1973 fairy tale and the screenplay for the beloved 1987 Rob Reiner film adaptation. Current Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, who was involved in that film adaptation, is the man who was key to this deal coming together.
The original film followed a young beauty (Robin Wright) reluctantly engaged to the kingdom of Florin's evil prince (Chris Sarandon). Kidnapped on the eve of their wedding, she's rescued by her farmboy sweetheart (Cary Elwes). It included an all star cast of comedy greats like Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin, Peter Falk, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Peeter Cook, Wallace Shawn and Mel Smith.
Things are still in extremely early stages for the theatrical adaptation with no production schedule set, and still no decision as to whether to do it as either a musical or a play.

Disney is developing a stage version of The Princess Bride in collaboration with its writer, William Goldman
Disney Theatrical Productions has announced that it will develop a stage version of The Princess Bride, the 1973 neo-fairy tale written by William Goldman that was turned into a much-beloved film in 1987.
A classic tale of true love and swashbuckling adventure, with the slightly postmodern framing of it being told by a grandfather to his bedridden grandson, its dashing hero and amusing supporting characters turned it into an enduring hit. It could now become another Disney stage success following adaptations of High School Musical, The Lion King and the forthcoming Aladdin.
"To now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true," said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios who helped develop the screen adaptation. "My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and...

When you’re able to boast being the primary director of Father Ted – probably the greatest ever sitcom – whatever you do from there on in your career is just a bonus. So for Irish filmmaker Declan Lowney, getting involved in the Alan Partridge world has made him almost untouchable, as we sat down to speak with him ahead of the film’s August 7 release.
Discussing what tempted him into the world of Alan, and what it’s like to direct the originator himself Steve Coogan, we also got Lowney speaking about Ted, as he reveals that his very own son is named after a character from the hit show, while he also had a quick word to say on the late, great Mel Smith.

Griff Rhys Jones has revealed that he was completely different to late comedy partner Mel Smith, joking that the pair only "stayed together for the money".
Smith passed away from a heart attack at the age of 60 earlier this month. The twosome starred in sketch show Alas Smith And Jones for nearly a decade.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Rhys Jones explained: "We were not similar... I invited Mel to my country cottage and he never took his coat off. He took me to the races and I read a book.
"I dragged him sailing and he asked to 'go in' when we were halfway home and 30 miles from the nearest port.
"He loved a drink. I am teetotal. He never carried a credit card. I never have cash. He never went for a walk. I run 10 miles a week. He worshipped Stephen Sondheim. I think Sondheim is a pretentious,...

Smith made his television debut in a bit part in Stephen Frears’ controversial 1979 TV film Bloody Kids. Comedian, actor, writer and director who came to prominence in satirical TV sketch show Not the Nine O'Clock News
Mel Smith was once upstaged by a talking gorilla. He was playing a zoologist in a sketch on his hit comedy show Not the Nine O'Clock News and the gorilla suit contained Rowan Atkinson. "When I caught Gerald in 68 he was completely wild," said Smith. "Wild?" retorted the gorilla. "I was absolutely livid!"
If the gorilla had the best line, Smith had the more expressive countenance, mugging with a deadpan virtuosity rarely seen since Oliver Hardy in his pomp. That face – as hangdog as his childhood hero Tony Hancock's – made Smith, who has died of a heart attack aged 60, one of the most recognisable of postwar British comedians.
