John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel reunited at the TCM Classic Film festival on Thursday for a 30th anniversary screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” to reflect on the film’s impact on their careers — and upon the medium itself.
“It changed cinema, so it’s almost hard to have it sink in,” observed Uma Thurman, who joined Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and Harvey Keitel for a Q&a about Tarantino’s benchmark film with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. “I feel like I’ve had an evolving and beautifully growing relationship with ‘Pulp Fiction’ all of my life. It changed cinema, and it changed every filmmaker I met since.”

Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.

Actor Brent Spiner's most visible acting role was probably Data, the android lieutenant commander on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." As Data, Spiner appeared in 176 episodes of "Next Generation," in the four spin-off movies, and in five episodes of "Star Trek: Picard." He also appeared on "Picard" as a new amalgam android character, as well as multiple members of the Soong family throughout various "Star Trek" shows. For an actor who was initially cast as an emotionless being, Spiner certainly played some of the franchise's more dramatic characters.
Spiner has always expressed a little ambivalence toward Data. While he certainly appreciates the money and fame brought to him by the role, Spiner felt that "Star Trek" might have robbed him of the ability to play a wide variety of parts. He feared casting agents would look at him and be unable to look past his "Star Trek" android.

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”
Even without a new SAG-AFTRA deal, there is a healthy batch of new titles on offer — a mix of international features and U.S. indie films that have secured interim agreements from the union to begin production. “In the last few days we’ve seen a waterfall of lineups,” says Nadiia Zaionchkovska, Cco of newly-founded Ukraine distributor Green Light Films, which will be making its market debut at this year’s AFM. “Lots of theatrical films, lots either in post or in pre-production, ready to shoot in the first...

A Saturday Night Live “Wayne’s World” sketch may have set the boundaries for how comedians handled the president’s children on the show. After apparently making fun of President Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea, Mike Myers ultimately apologized for the joke.
Myers penned an apology letter and SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels also apologized. “We felt, upon reflection, that if it was in any way hurtful, it wasn’t worth it,” Michaels said. “She’s a kid, a kid who didn’t choose to be in public life.”
So what did Myers and sidekick Dana Carvey say about 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton?

Hillary Clinton wasn’t impressed by Julia Sweeney’s 1993 “Saturday Night Live” impression of her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea Clinton.
Sweeney, 63, recalled the sketch while appearing on Wednesday’s episode of fellow “SNL” alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast during a conversation about the show’s lack of female representation in the early ’90s. The group discussed how political figures, like Hilary and Sarah Palin, presented the show an opportunity to include women in sketches.
Spade then jogged Sweeney’s memory, recounting that she once played Chelsea, who was 13 years old at the time, stressing that her portrayal “rubbed somebody wrong.”

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Julia Sweeney revealed on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Hillary Clinton was so upset over the show’s portrayal of her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, that she personally “wrote a letter” to showrunner Lorne Michaels. Sweeney played a teenage Chelsea in a January 1993 episode, with Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks playing Bill and Hillary, respectively (see photo above).
“People were saying how unattractively I was playing Chelsea, and all I did was not wear makeup and put braces on,” Sweeney said. “If you say that, you’re saying I’m unattractive!”
Sweeney maintained that she “wasn’t trying to play [Chelsea] unattractive,” but that doesn’t mean targeting someone’s child on national television was a smart idea. Clinton’s letter expressed her disapproval over the sketch, the cast member said. Variety has reached out to Clinton’s representative for comment.

On Wednesday’s episode of Saturday Night Live alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast, it was revealed that Hillary Clinton was upset with Julia Sweeney’s SNL impression of a teenaged Chelsea Clinton.
The former Secretary of State “wrote a letter” to SNL creator Lorne Michaels about the sketch, which aired on the show in 1993.
Sweeney brought up the letter while talking on the podcast about the lack of female representation on SNL during the early 1990s. Sweeney claimed it was rare to have sketches that featured predominantly female cast members. That’s even though likely public targets like the Clintons were in the news.
Spade noted that Sweeney had once portrayed Chelsea Clinton and that it “rubbed somebody wrong.”
The Clintons were notoriously protective of Chelsea during their time in the White House.

Movie lovers know Steven Seagal for his rise to fame through the ’80s and ’90s as a B-movie action star. With hits like Under Siege, Above the Law, and Marked for Death, fans know him well. Unfortunately, Seagal has a history of behavior issues on set. Here’s what one director said about Seagal being a “pain in the neck” to work with.
Director Andrew Davis said Steven Seagal was a ‘pain in the neck’
Director Andrew Davis worked with Steven Seagal for Seagal’s 1988 debut, Above the Law. The director and actor worked together four years later in 1992’s Under Siege. Before Seagal was cast in Above the Law, he worked as a martial arts instructor in Hollywood. Michael Ovitz, an agent who was also Seagal’s student then, thought Seagal would be ideally suited for the leading role.

Since 1980, the weekly sketch show "Saturday Night Live" has produced eleven feature films based on its characters. "The Blues Brothers" was released in 1980 and remains one of our favorite "SNL" movies (though it's debatable how much of an "SNL" movie it is with no Lorne Michaels attached). It was another 12 years before another "SNL" movie came out, and it was worth the wait. The 1990s were the heyday for a proliferation "SNL" movies, beginning in 1992 with the beloved "Wayne's World."
The rest of the decade was hit or miss for "SNL" movies in terms of quality. We saw the return of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain in the heartwarming "Coneheads." Will Ferrell got his first leading role with "A Night at the Roxbury." There was an awful "Blues Brothers" sequel for some reason. There's a reason why Phil Hartman's always at the top of the lists for best "Saturday Night Live" cast members. Yes, he was one of the funniest cast members of his time, but he also kept things rolling whenever he wasn't playing the funniest character in a sketch. "People like Phil make it safe for people to be crazier," Julia Sweeney, who played Hartman's character's wife in the famous "Van Down By the River" sketch, told Grantland in 2014. "They're the gravitas. It's not going to go completely off the rails if Phil's in the sketch."
"Matt Foley: Van Down By the River" is famous not just because of Chris Farley's performance, but because of the way almost every other character on the set can't help but break. The only one who manages to keep his composure the whole way through is Phil Hartman, who maintains an air...

ABC has announced an impressive lineup of guests for the highly anticipated Not Dead Yet, starring and executive produced by Gina Rodriguez, ahead of its two-episode premiere on February 8. The series, which follows an obituary writer that sees dead people, will have some star-studded ghosts as guests alongside the previously announced Martin Mull, including Ed Begley Jr., Mo Collins, Deborah S. Craig, Telma Hopkins, Don Lake, Rhea Perlman, Paula Pell, Tony Plana, Brittany Snow, and Julia Sweeney. Additional guest stars are expected to be announced at a later date. Not Dead Yet follows Nell Serrano (Rodriguez), a broke and newly single self-described disaster, working to restart the life and career she left behind a few years ago. When she lands the only job she can find ― writing obituaries ― Nell starts getting life advice from some unlikely sources, the dead people whose lives she’s writing about. In the trailer above,...

A 4K Steelbook! Haven’t seen this show lately, and discovered that it holds up remarkably well. Mr. Qt’s sophomore outing made an indelible mark on American movies — the darling of hipster crime filmmaking dazzled viewers with showcase set-piece scenes, entertainingly profane dialogue and ultra-hip inside-out time-shuffling narrative tricks. Add to that genuine star turns, especially Uma Thurman and John Travolta’s iconic dance scene. It’s old-fashioned movie-going in an avant-garde pattern, with raw violence and even rougher language. The stars include Samuel L. Jackson, Harvy Keitel, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer and Bruce Willis.

On "Saturday Night Live," breaking is a complicated thing. Back when Jimmy Fallon was a cast member, for instance, he cracked up on camera so often that it became a nuisance to both the audience and his fellow cast members. Tracy Morgan described Fallon's schtick as "taking all the attention off of everybody else and putting it on you, like, 'Oh, look at me, I'm the cute one.'" Morgan apparently forbade Fallon from breaking in any of his sketches — "I told him not to do that s*** in my sketches, so he never did" — which seems to imply that Fallon's laughter was more of a calculated act than he might've wanted us to think.
Other times, the sketch is so funny that you can't really blame the cast member for laughing. Sometimes, the cast members breaking actually elevates the sketch, turning it from something that might've been forgettable...

Showtime’s Work In Progress, like its main character, has experienced its own growth since Season 1. During Showtime’s TCA panel on Wednesday, Work In Progress star and co-creator Abby Mcenany chatted about the differences between the comedy’s first season and its newly-launched second.
“I had a trailer, you guys. It was a big deal,” McEnany joked.
Season 2 of Work In Progress, which debuted on August 22, picks up from its previous chapter with Abby (McEnany) coping with her break from Chris (Theo Germaine) and adjusting to life with best friend-turned-roommate Campbell. Upon returning for Season 2, McEnany said she felt more confident going into creative process and production.
“Last year was my first real professional job in the front of the camera and everything was brand new,” she reflected. “Coming into this season…I definitely understand more. To be able to bring in other folks to share the writing – the...

It’s been nearly a year-and-a-half since audiences last glimpsed “Work in Progress,” inspired by the life of Chicago improv artist, series creator, and star Abby McEnany. Now, Showtime is giving her a second season, it’s only a few months away, and you can take a look at the first trailer right now.
Showtime announced the 10-episode Season 2 will premiere in August with two episodes airing back-to-back. Season 2 picks back up with McEnany’s character Abby in the wake of her breakup (and almost out of almonds). Abby begrudgingly accepts that she’s too busy to kill herself. In fact, she’s just starting to get her head above water… when a global pandemic converges with a family emergency and forces her into uncharted territory.
Returning this season are Celeste Pechous, Armand Fields, Karin Anglin, Bruce Jarchow, Theo Germaine, and Julia Sweeney. McEnany serves as co-creator as well as...

The third season of “Shrill” will be its last, Hulu confirmed to Variety.
The streaming comedy, which is based on the book “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” by Lindy West, stars Aidy Bryant as Annie, a woman who wants to change her life, but not her body. Over the course of the first two seasons, Annie has faced some demons, including a complicated relationship with her mother (Julia Sweeney), her boss (John Cameron Mitchell) and an online troll (Beck Bennett) but still struggled with her romantic relationship with boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones).
Variety exclusively broke the news of “Shrill’s” eight-episode third season renewal in March of last year, just two months after the second season launched.
Prior to that renewal, showrunner Ali Rushfield told Variety that future episodes would include Annie having to contend with Ryan both on a personal and professional level, since Season 2 left him working...

A look back at how “SNL” sent up the legendary TV host, who died Saturday at 87
In 1992, Kevin Nealon donned suspenders to play Larry King in a sketch focused on the marital troubles of Burt Reynolds (Phil Hartman) and Loni Anderson (Julia Sweeney). To get the estranged pair to open up on camera, Nealon’s King at one point confesses, “On my left foot I have six toes.”
One year later, “SNL” sent up King’s legendary interview with the reclusive Marlon Brando — with Kevin Nealon channeling King and a fat-suited John Travolta playing up Brando’s eccentricity. Though the sketch somehow skips King and Brando’s real-life kiss on the mouth.
In a 1996 cold open, Nealon’s King tried to take the reins of an interview with a rambling Ross Perot (who was in the midst of his second long-shot bid for the presidency): “Larry, I see you’re glazing over,...

Warning: This post contains spoilers from American Gods’ Season 3 premiere.
Toward the end of American Gods‘ premiere Sunday, Shadow Moon arrived in Lakeside, the sleepy town where he’ll spend a significant amount of Season 3. It was cold, and Shadow didn’t have appropriate outerwear to stave off the Wisconsin winter. So he quickly stepped into the general store to try to find a ride to his new apartment, and that’s where he received the warmest of welcomes from the proprietor, Ann-Marie Hinzelmann.
