The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.
While he is in almost every scene, or the scenes are shot from his perspective, for the...

Earlier this month, a serial killer thriller called Squealer was given a theatrical and digital release. You can watch the trailer for that one Here. Squealer drew inspiration from the story of Robert Pickton, a Canadian pig farmer who was charged with killing 26 women (but claimed to have killed 49). He would feed the bodies of his victims to the pigs. Just a couple weeks after Squealer made its way out into the world, another serial killer thriller inspired by the Pickton case has arrived in theatres, and you can watch the trailer for this one, which is called Pig Killer, in the embed above.
Pig Killer is currently playing in the following theatres:
Laemmle LA
Film Noir Brooklyn
Reeding Berkeley
Vancouver – Van City Oaks Cinema Center
It will be receiving a VOD and Blu-ray release next week, on November 21st. Copies are available for pre-order on Amazon.

Dark Sky Films gave the The Third Saturday in October slasher double feature a VOD and digital release back in May, and while we haven’t heard word of a Blu-ray or DVD release yet, the movies have made their way onto the Tubi streaming service… and soon, they’ll also be available on VHS! Which seems very fitting for a pair of movies that are meant to be throwbacks to decades gone by. In addition to the limited run VHS release, both original scores composed by WU10 will be available to stream on all major platforms starting this Friday, October 20th. You can listen to a couple sample tracks in the embeds at the bottom of this article.
Pre-orders of the VHS release can be made through the official website. You can get a standalone The Third Saturday in October VHS, a standalone The Third Saturday in October Part V VHS,...

"Is any of this real at all?!" Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie supernatural thriller titled Impuratus, from filmmaker Mike Yurinko. The title is, obviously enough, a Latin word meaning "defiled, infamous, abandoned, vile." Always using mysterious Latin words is a trope with these demonic thrillers. A police detective Clayton Douglas is summoned to a remote hospital to hear a mysterious Civil War veteran's outrageous death-bed confession that forces him to consider the supernatural. With Sister Rose providing spiritual aid, Clayton is transported back in time as he uncovers the horrifying truth behind his possession. Tom Sizemore stars as Det. Douglas, with Jody Quigley, Lew Temple, Robert Miano, Silvia Spross, and Airen DeLaMater. This is a pretty wild concept – about a man alive for hundreds of years (and not a vampire) – but will the film actually be any good? Doesn't look like it in this trailer, though you never know.

What if a lost horror franchise made during the peak of the slasher genre was unearthed today, but only two of the films could be restored? Filmmaker Jay Burleson imagined just that with The Third Saturday in October.

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

After making The Third Saturday in October Part V, the fifth entry in a non-existent series, what do you do for a follow-up? If you’re writer/director Jay Burleson you make The Third Saturday in October and give your faux franchise a starting point.
After a text crawl telling us what we’re about to see is based on a true story we launch into the story of serial killer Jakkariah “Jack” Harding who we see meeting his fate in the electric chair. Witnessing his execution are Ricky Dean Logan and Vicki Newton both of whom lost loved ones to Harding.
Unfortunately when they go to the cemetery to see him put six feet under they see something much worse.

Paramount Pictures has hammered a multi-year, first-look deal with Parker Finn to write, produce and direct features.
Paramount took Finn’s Smile, which was destined for its streaming platform Paramount+, and turned it into a theatrical success, making it the No. 1 original horror movie of 2022 worldwide with over $216 million in box office. Among other distinctions, Smile was also the first original horror title to repeat at No. 1 at domestic box office since 2016.
Said Paramount Pictures president & CEO Brian Robbins, “Smile’s breakthrough success is a testament to Parker’s unique and fresh filmmaking, and we are thrilled that he will make Paramount his home.”
Added Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group co-presidents Michael Ireland and Daria Cercek, “Parker knows how to keep people on the edge of their seat and we’re happy that we get to keep scaring audiences together.”
“I am honored and thrilled to be joining the Paramount family.

Parker Finn, the filmmaker behind 2022’s biggest horror hit, Smile, has signed a multiyear, first-look deal with Paramount Pictures.
Paramount distributed Smile, which Finn wrote and directed, with the movie grossing over $216 million worldwide. Originally made for Paramount+, Parker Finn‘s Smile was instead released into theaters and has scared up an incredible 215 million worldwide to date, a massive success for Paramount that’s sure to jumpstart Finn’s career here in the horror industry. But where did it all begin for the filmmaker? It was back in 2019 when Finn made the short film that became Smile.
Titled Laura Hasn’t Slept, that 11-minute short will be available on Smile‘s Blu-ray, and it has also been uploaded to YouTube by the official Paramount Entertainment Australia account.
Finn explains, “Laura Hasn’t Slept premiered at South by Southwest in 2020, and that’s where Paramount first saw it. This is the origin of everything that became Smile.”
Caitlin Stasey (Kindred Spirits) and Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects) star in Laura Hasn’t Slept, which begins with Stasey’s Laura explaining a recurring series of dreams to her therapist.

First up, House of 1000 Corpses starring Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie, Karen Black, Walton Goggins, Rainn Wilson, and Chris Hardwick. Released in 2003, the black comedy horror film centers on a group of teens who are kidnapped and tortured by a psychotic family, during Halloween, after traveling across the country to write a book. While initially receiving unfavorable reviews from critics, the film was a box-office success and has since achieved a cult following.
In the other corner, we have The Devil’s Rejects, the direct sequel to House of 1000 Corpses. This time, the film focuses on three members of the...

Nobody in the Montana Territory circa 1881 watches a former slave like Cicero (Isaiah Mustafa) walk into town without keen interest. That goes for friends and foes alike. Luckily for him, Yellowstone City is a progressive settlement in many ways. It has its fair share of racists and bigots to be sure, but you can’t help feeling heartened as far as seeing a saloon owned by a gay couple (Richard Dreyfuss’ Edgar and John Ales’ Mickey) who act as fathers to wayward souls like the young Dakota native working the stables (Tanaya Beatty’s Violet) or the Latina den mother of their brothel (Aimee Garcia’s Isabel). If anyone is willing to open their doors to Cicero, these are the folks. But they’re not the only ones drinking today.
Director Richard Gray and screenwriter Eric Belgau’s Murder at Yellowstone City takes pains to ensure everyone is at attention this Sunday.

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.
And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.

Set sometime in the 1950s, Monstrous opens as Laura puts her son Cody in the back seat of the car and hits the road for California as “See You Later Alligator” plays on the soundtrack.
She’s leaving Arizona and an abusive ex-husband behind and plans to start over in a safer environment for her and her son. She’s rented a beautiful house by a large pond from Mr. and Mrs. and a job working for Mr. Alonzo.
But this sunny bit of nostalgia is about to turn much darker. Cody is convinced a monster from the lake is stalking them. He also misses home, and despite the reasons for their leaving, his father. Speaking of whom, he’s gotten Laura’s phone number and begins calling.

"I think I have a demon in my house." It seems like she does indeed! Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for a horror thriller titled Monstrous, the latest from filmmaker Chris Sivertson. This is arriving in early May for anyone who wants to watch and find out. The film's story centers on a traumatized woman named Laura fleeing from her abusive ex-husband with her 7-year-old son. In their new, remote sanctuary at a lakeside farmhouse they find they have a bigger, more terrifying monster to deal with. It's not what you think, but it really seems like something supernatural and very scary! But who or what is it after? "I hope you made peace with God..." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a new indie western titled Hostile Territory, joining the ranks of a growing set of westerns being made recently. Most of them are indies and most of them are forgettable, but they're making more and more these days. Set in post-civil war America, when a Union soldier is presumed dead, his children are mistakenly sent away on "the orphan train." This is a classic wild-west story of people uniting for the greater good, and children forced to grow up quickly. A former Pow teams up with a troop of Native American sharpshooters and a freed slave as they try to stop the train. Brian Presley writes & directs & stars in this film. He's joined by Matt McCoy, Brea Bee, Brad Leland, Lew Temple, Cooper North, and Craig Tate. This actually looks like it might be somewhat entertaining,...

Time and time again, The Walking Dead has proved it isn’t afraid to kill off its characters. Some deaths have been more controversial than others, but one in particular was seemingly a big no-no for former lead actor Andrew Lincoln.
The death that the Rick Grimes star opposed might come as a surprise, too. Cast your mind back to the first episode of season 3 when the gang arrives at the prison they would later call home and encounters a number of surviving inmates holed up there. Each member of that group would meet their maker during that season, with Axel, played by Lew Temple, outliving his companions by lasting until episode 10.
Axel established himself as a popular figure among the cast during the first 10 episodes of season 3, so his death at the hands of the Governor came as a real stringer. It didn’t go down well with some,...
