“I didn’t realize when I met (writer-director) Damien (Chazelle) what a huge undertaking this was going to be,” admits “Babylon” makeup department head Heba Thorisdottir. “I didn’t know he wanted 750 backgrounds to go through hair and makeup. I told him I didn’t want to go through it if he wanted it all pristine. But when we sat down, the first thing our of his mouth was, ‘I don’t want it to be pristine. I want it all dirty and gritty. I think that was the bonding moment.” Good thing, because one day the film had 800 background people, and everybody had to go through hair and makeup. Added hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh: “I just think it was a complete beast. I’m honestly baffled how we got through it. Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” was just the warm up for “Babylon,” his epic comedy-drama about Hollywood during the seismic shift from silents to talkies in the late 1920s — think “La Dolce Vita” meets “Nashville” by way of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” This allowed the Oscar-winning director to step out of his comfort zone with a wild, orgiastic ride through hedonistic excess and extreme living before the sound revolution transformed the movies into a cultural phenomenon.
Judging from the mixed response to Monday’s Academy screening, however, “Babylon” might have a bumpier Best Picture ride than its singing and dancing predecessor. “As a crew, we’ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we’re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous ‘sources’ quoted in a recent article,” reads the statement obtained by TheWrap. “There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.”
The statement follows a Friday report from Vulture in which an anonymous source recalled a “screaming match” between Wilde and Pugh. The report said then-studio head Toby Emmerich had to intervene and moderate a “long negotiation process” to ensure that Pugh would participate in the movie’s press promotion and “not jeopardize the potential box office.”

“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.

Quentin Tarantino’s earliest memory of Los Angeles was as a young boy visiting Grauman’s Chinese Theater, standing in the courtyard and looking at the handprints of John Wayne and Roy Rogers. He recollects the Mold-a-Rama machine outside that dispensed a souvenir wax pagoda if you inserted a quarter.
The director had toyed with re-creating that memory as the opening to his Oscar-nominated “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He went so far as to have Barbara Ling, his production designer, track down the makers of the machine, but the idea never materialized. Instead, the film opens with black-and-white newsreel footage of Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), setting the scene for their coming exploits. But Tarantino has the machine: “It sits in my garage,” he chuckles as he lounges across the table from Ling and the film’s costume designer, Arianne Phillips...

2020 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards nominations: ‘Bombshell,’ ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Joker’ lead
The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing its nominations on November 11. That is two months earlier than last year, when the slate was revealed midway through Oscar nominations voting. This year, the guild is out of the gate five weeks before the academy unveils the shortlist in nine categories, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling. These awards will be handed out on January 11, which is after Oscar voting but before the nominations are announced.
Two films — “Bombshell” and “Rocketman” — reaped three bids apiece with the Muahs guild. Both contend for special makeup effects. The former figures in both contemporary makeup and hair styling while the latter does likewise on the period/character side.
Six films are two-time nominees: “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

Nominees for the seventh annual Muahs Guild Awards were unveiled on Monday by they Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, with Paramount’s Rocketman and Lionsgate’s Bombshell scoring the most noms among movies and FX’s American Horror Story: 1984 and Fosse/Verdon, HBO’s Chernobyl and Nickelodeon’s All That leading the TV side.
The awards, which honoring achievements in make-up and hair styling in film, TV, commercials and live theater, will be bestowed at a gala January 11 at The Novo by Microsoft at L.A. Live. The guild will also award make-up artist Thomas Burman and hair stylist Martin Samuel with Lifetime Achievement Awards during the ceremony.

The character makeup that turned Charlize Theron into Megyn Kelly in “Bombshell” and Taron Egerton into Elton John in “Rocketman” has helped those two films lead in nominations for the 2020 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which were announced on Monday morning.
The two films received three nominations each in the five feature-film categories, with “Bombshell” being recognized for contemporary makeup, special makeup effects and contemporary hair styling, and “Rocketman” nominated for period and/or character makeup, special makeup effects and period and/or character hair styling.
“Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Downton Abbey,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” were nominated for two awards each.
