Nick Cave has released “Song for Amy,” a new track appearing on both his score and the soundtrack for the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black. Stream it below.
On “Song for Amy,” Cave sings over a gorgeous arrangement of piano, flute, and strings while delivering somber lyrics like, “I’d give you anything for you to stay/ But if you go now, I won’t stay in your way.”
In addition to “Song for Amy,” the Back to Black soundtrack features highlights from Winehouse’s discography and several songs from artists who inspired her, including Billie Holliday and The Shangri-Las. The film’s score was composed by Cave and his longtime collaborator Warren Ellis. Stream both albums below.

Ahead of the release of the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black in the U.K. this weekend, the singer’s “Tears Dry on Their Own” has been re-uploaded onto YouTube with a visual featuring previously unseen footage from the single’s original music video shoot.
Like the recently rereleased video for “In My Bed” — which arrived earlier this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Winehouse’s 2004 debut album Frank — the new “Tears Dry on Their Own” visual combines the original clip with never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes, in this case,...

For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.
In a way, any music biopic is off to a bad start, since there’s always going to be the curse of symmetry: everything must square with what we already know,...

“Back to Black,” the 2006 album that the new Amy Winehouse biopic takes its title from, is a record built on an exquisite contradiction. The music has a crispy delicious retro-bop bounce, a quality that extends to Winehouse’s voice, which takes the growling-cat stylings of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday and kicks them up into something playfully ferocious. Yet when you tune into the lyrics, they’re as dark as midnight. “Rehab,” the album’s showpiece track, is surely the jauntiest song ever recorded about an addict who pulls a stance of rock ‘n’ roll defiance out of the impulse to drown herself in booze.
At its best, “Back to Black,” the forthright and compelling movie that’s been made of Winehouse’s life, takes that light/dark balance and digs into the drama of it. The film’s snaky on-and-off fascination starts with the British actor Marisa Abela,...

Last July, Brandi Carlile had a provocation for her friend Jay Sweet, the head of Newport Folk Festival. “One year from now,” Sweet remembers her telling him. “I bet you we can bring Joni Mitchell to this stage.”
The festival head was skeptical. A few years back, he had witnessed a magical moment at a show in Los Angeles when Mitchell was reunited with her old friend Mavis Staples, whom she hadn’t seen in many years. When the two singers met, they butterfly-kissed, nose to nose, for a full 30 seconds without speaking.

David E. Kelley knows how to craft compelling courtroom dramas, and in Netflix’s “Anatomy of a Scandal,” which dropped Friday, he and fellow creator Melissa James Gibson have put together a dark and twisty limited series involving political figures, criminal accusations, and the unique traditions of the justice system on the other side of the pond.
Starring Sienna Miller, Michelle Dockery, Rupert Friend and Naomi Scott, the series follows the lives of Sophie (Miller) and James (Friend) after he, a British politician and member of the upper class, is accused by a former coworker with whom he had an extramarital affair, Olivia (Scott), of sexual assault. Life is going exactly as planned for posh, pedigreed London politician and married father of two James Whitehouse. Then, shockingly, he’s accused of raping a young aide (Naomi Scott) with whom he had an affair. The alleged crime, and its ripple effects, play out in this twisty thriller, developed by hitmaker David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) and based on Sarah Vaughan’s bestselling 2018 novel, Anatomy of a Scandal. Whitehouse and his wife, stay-at-home-mom Sophie, first scoff at the idea that the accusation will stick to the Oxford-educated golden boy and close friend of the prime minister. “James grew up with enormous privilege and has gotten pretty much everything he ever wanted,” says Friend, who modeled the character after an amalgam of politicians. But savvy, devoted prosecutor Kate Woodcroft is positively convinced of the man’s guilt. “James and Kate have a ...

Sexual Consent. The notion of what it is, and isn’t, and how that slippery definition can be determined in a British court of law, the workplace and on the domestic battleground, propels the new hybrid hot-topic limited series “Anatomy of a Scandal.”
Over six tightly-woven episodes that are both juicy and judicial, this Netflix show offers meaty roles for its high profile British cast led by forty-somethings Sienna Miller, Rupert Friend and “Downton Abbey”‘s favorite entitled sister Michelle Dockery. Adapted from Sarah Vaughan’s 2018 psychological thriller novel, and set in England, “Anatomy of a Scandal” resembles a posh BBC Oxbridge mystery — but has Emmy winner David E. Kelly onboard to write Episode 1 and executive produce, giving it that American “Big Little Lies” gloss.

Words that should give any wife pause: “It was just…sex.” When has that ever been true in the history of TV? In Netflix‘s Anatomy of a Scandal, a slick but shallow six-part adaptation of Sarah Vaughan’s novel, co-creator David E. Kelley spins a less murderous version of his HBO hit The Undoing. Once again, a glamorous spouse slowly begins to regret standing by her very handsome disgraced man. If only she’d known? How could she not? (Credit: Netflix) Sophie Whitehouse’s (Sienna Miller) world of privilege begins to unravel when her powerful Parliament politician husband, James (a sheepish Rupert Friend), father to their two adorable children, confesses to a five-month affair with a hopelessly devoted aide. Soon another polished shoe drops after his former lover accuses him of violent rape — in their workplace elevator, no less. “The road is paved in #MeToo landmines,” warns communications chief...

With the creators of “Big Little Lies” and “House of Cards” at the helm, “Anatomy of a Scandal” should have been an absolute slam dunk. The Netflix limited series, developed by David E. Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, had the potential to be part thriller, part courtroom drama, and full (as the title would suggest) of scandal. Instead, it’s a soap opera burdened by clunky handling of sensitive subject matter.
We begin our story in London, with happily married couple Sophie and James Whitehouse (Sienna Miller and Rupert Friend). James is a member of parliament and a close friend to Prime Minister Tom Southern (Geoffrey Streatfield), while Sophie supports him and cares for their two children. Their lives appear perfect until news breaks of an affair James had with a younger coworker, Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott). He tells Sophie it meant nothing, that it ended recently, and that he made a mistake.

Shallow soap opera dialogue and an absolutely ludicrous plot twist about 2/3rds of the way through a six-episode season hold the admittedly talented ensemble of Netflix’s “Anatomy of a Scandal” back from creating anything that resembles realistic characters or genuine drama. And yet, this adaptation of the book by Sarah Vaughan can’t even commit to the kind of broad, goofy escapism that resulted in recent hits for the streamer like “Clickbait” or “Pieces of Her.” It’s caught in some numbingly dull valley between thinking it’s a high-brow commentary on privileged toxic masculinity and just leaning into the fact that it doesn’t give a damn about any of its characters and doesn’t really have anything to say that’s deeper than a puddle.

Sophie thinks she should have questioned things she didn’t, while James refuses to let his name and rape be uttered in the same sentence in court. Watch the video below for more. Curses and demons are typically confined to the realms of fantasy but they have a semi-biographical presence in Toufic Saadeh’s upcoming feature, The Story of Nadia.
Shooting begins this month on the independently funded drama/thriller, which follows Tyler (Dylan Mahoney), a young man who lives a largely uneventful life until a strange reading with a fortune-teller leads him to meet Nadia (Bella Valentini), an attractive young girl who happens to be under the influence of a sinister supernatural being.
The pair embark on a wonderful romance but with Nadia’s curse only worsening, and Tyler being haunted by the same demon, they must decide if love really is worth going head to head with the forces of evil.
The four-week shoot will be based in the Long Jetty on the Nsw Central Coast, with Parramatta, Penrith, Waterloo to also be used as locations.
