TikTok has recapped an eventful year on its platform. The app known for short-form videos has shared a year-end recap that highlights girl dinner, Keith Lee, and everything in between.
On TikTok, the year-end rundown differs from similar lists compiled by rivals like YouTube. On the Google-owned platform, MrBeast‘s multi-year run as Top Creator suggests that a site-wide culture still exists. But on TikTok, the results look a little different. The top video of 2023 was a makeup video from creator dollievision, and if you’re not into cosmetics, you may not have seen it. But that didn’t stop dollievision from pulling in 37.5 million likes on her viral smash.

We’re not even ten minutes into the interview, and my eyes start welling up with tears. “The fact that you’re here right now, you’re blinking, and I’m breathing, there’s blood pulsing through our body, that is enough,” he tells me over video. As he sits in his hotel room, escaping the sweltering heat of Las Vegas, and I hide away in a cold New York City office, it’s like space collapses. Suddenly, we’re sitting side-by-side as equals, though miles apart. “I don’t need to prove anything.

Offset has enlisted his frequent collaborator — both in and out of the studio — Cardi B for a new single called “Jealousy.” Listen to the song below.
According to its press release, the single comes ahead of Offset’s “forthcoming album,” though no additional details are available at this time. In a new interview with Variety, Offset explained that he’s hoping to launch a new era of his career. “This is me going full-fledged into my solo career,” he said. “I’m coming through, bustin’ through the door. It’s all set, my next chapter. It’s my time.”
Offset first teased “Jealousy” on social media earlier this week, tapping none other than Jamie Lee Curtis to help him spoof the late James Brown’s iconic 1988 CNN interview. The original interview took place after Brown was arrested for allegedly assaulting his then-wife — presumably, Offset’s spoof of the incident is...

Two all new celebrities in disguise took on returning champ Squirrel for “Sesame Street Night” on Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.” After a performance of “Just the Two of Us” by Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers, Squirrel was dethroned in third place behind Fairy and Jackalope. The nutty performer pulled off her mask to reveal herself as model and actress Malin Akerman. Panelist Jenny McCarthy correctly guessed the iconic DJ, but Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger were off the mark.
“I totally forgot about ‘Couples Retreat,'” Ken said of the film he starred in with Malin. “I cannot believe it!” During her unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon, Malin said, “I was just so excited to get to do this and watch it with my son, who’s actually here in the audience tonight. And my dad is here from Sweden! The Swedish meatball! It’s so fun.

Of the many music documentaries that screened at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, many – in fact, most – spend a lot of time telling you how great their subjects are. And then there’s “Listening to Kenny G,” which spends a lot of time telling you how much smooth-jazz saxophonist Kenny G sucks.
Mind you, it’d be impossible to make a Kenny G doc without addressing the elephant in the room, which is that the former Kenneth Gorelick is to many, particularly in the jazz community, a living embodiment of everything that can be wrong with popular music. And director Penny Lane, whose previous work includes “Our Nixon” and “Hail Satan?” is smart enough to know she can’t avoid the topic of Kenny G’s extreme divisiveness and playful enough to make it the defining characteristic of her film.
So while we hear from Kenny’s old high-school music teacher,...

Although accustomed to spending much of her time on the road, Rhiannon Giddens has instead been in self-isolation in Limerick, Ireland, with her children and her Italian partner Francesco Turrisi. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Giddens says it is “the most time I’ve spent in one place in probably about 14 years.” In addition to perfecting her bread-baking skills, the Grammy-winning artist and MacArthur Genius has released an uplifting music video to accompany her recording of “Just the Two of Us,” the song that the late Bill Withers...

Bill Withers was my first true idol. His debut album, Just As I Am, came out in May 1971, four months after I was born. When I first heard his songs, either on the radio or on my dad’s records, I knew that I was hearing something different. His music and his vocals were as down-to-earth as the earth itself. Too often, black artists get classified as otherworldly talents (Michael Jackson, Prince) or gritty, up-from-the-streets hustlers who are barely overcoming animal instincts (too many to name). Withers was something else: a black everyman,...

Soulful singer-songwriter Bill Withers, best known for a string of hits that includes “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean On Me,” has died from heart complications. He was 81.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” Withers’ family said in a statement to the Associated Press. “A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
The three-time Grammy Award winner released eight albums before retiring from music in 1985. However, his inspiration and influence on artists, films, and music fans has never stopped. Even today, amidst the coronavirus pandemic,...

In many ways, being a world famous musician is a job just like any other — and sometimes these superstars like to bring their offspring along to the studio for a little “Take Your Kids to Work Day” action. Over the years, artists like Beyoncé, Eminem, Will Smith and Stevie Wonder have collaborated with their little ones on record, creating some of the most touching moments in the pop music canon.
Justin Timberlake has joined their ranks on his new album, Man of the Woods (out now), which features his 2½-year-old son Silas on the track “Young Man,” adorably intoning “Da-da” and “I love you.

Kurt here from Your Movie Buddy. In my attempt to tone up and shed a few (as I feared, the life of a writer can be waistline-hazardous), I've found new inspiration. The gym I attend has a theater in the back where, instead of watching The View with headphones, you can do your cardio in the dark with a daily film that plays on a loop. It's surely not the place to go if you're looking to catch up on your Bergman or Powell & Pressburger, but, by god, at least it's something. Even with a trainer who kicks my ass and drafts a new routine each month, I'll take all the incentives I can get.
On that note, I've opted to use this extra motivator as a writing opportunity – a chance to chime in on the gym's staff picks and voice the opinions that brew while I'm huffing it on the elliptical.

With today’s release of Takers, a few things have been on my mind...no, it’s not really about the movie in itself nor the pretty…and there’s a lot of pretty in that film! Nah, Today my mind is on crime culture cinema. The first question I would like to pose to you all is: What is this curious fascination some of us have with films that highlight the criminal class of our society?
I thought I would start by examining my own obsession with gangster cinema. I vividly remember the first time I saw Scarface (83); it blew my mind and may have contributed to changing my world view. Watching Al Pacino as Tony Montana stand on that balcony, assault rifle in hand, yelling “You f****** Cockroaches!” was the most surreal thing I had ever seen in my short life. Back then, it was like a dirty...
