It's underappreciated films time again, and this week, we delve deep into the year 2005 - a collection of months dominated by the likes of Star Wars: Episode III, another Harry Potter, Steven Spielberg's War Of The Worlds, Peter Jackson's King Kong, and CG family movie Madagascar.
It was also the year Pierce Brosnan formally bowed out of his role as James Bond, and Martin Scorsese's The Aviator was hyped to win the director his first Oscar, but didn't. Still, the contents of this list received nothing like the acclaim of The Aviator, nor the financial pickings of a Star Wars or Harry Potter. As ever, we've focused on 25 films which we think deserve a bit more love.

Brent was once a happy teenager, until the day he accidentally drove his father’s car into a tree to avoid killing a man in the road. Unfortunately, the accident killed his father who sat in the passenger seat. Now, six months later, Brent is a shell of his former self; he mopes and broods, even when his girlfriend Holly is around.
One day after school, a shy girl nobody seems to like, named Lola, asks Brent to the end of school year dance, and he declines because he’s taking Holly. The only thing is that Lola doesn’t take well to rejection from boys she has crushes on…

Chicago – Sean Byrne’s “The Loved Ones” is one of those cinematic curiosities so gleefully depraved and unapologetically looney that it appears to have been conceived in an insane asylum. There is no logical reason why this picture should work at all, and yet it has been made with such conviction that I couldn’t help watching it in a state of slack-jawed awe.
The premise is resoundingly simple: boy meets girl, boys rejects girl, girl kidnaps and tortures boy in the secluded privacy of her home. What’s strange is that the girl, Lola (Robin McLeavy), isn’t given any proper setup. She has only a single line of dialogue before her true nature is revealed, though McLeavy delivers it with such painfully vulnerable sincerity that she somehow manages to establish a fully realized character in a matter of seconds.

Clip from The Loved Ones called Opening Bell Sean Byrne's The Loved Ones stars Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and Victoria Thaine and is distributed via Paramount Pictures. Taglined (or should we say toetagged?) with " You don't have to die to go to hell," the film also includes Jessica McNamee, Richard Wilson, John Brumpton, Andrew S. Gilbert, Suzi Doughtery and Victoria Eager...all of which i have never heard of before. Here's what to expect: Lola Stone asked Brent Mitchell to the prom, but Brent said no, and now he's screwed. What happens when Lola doesn't get what she wants? She enlists Daddy's help to throw a prom of her own where she is queen and Brent is king, whether he likes it or not. The Loved Ones is what happens when puppy love goes horribly, violently wrong. Brent should have said yes...

Birthday Trailer. James Harkness‘ Birthday (2011) movie trailer stars Natalie Eleftheriadis, Kestie Morassi, Richard Wilson, Travis McMahon, and Ra Chapman. Birthday‘s plot synopsis: “M (Natalie Eleftheriadis) is the highest paid professional of the many girls at Scarlet’s, but, even on her 25th birthday, it’s business as usual. M’s trade is sex, but sex doesn’t sell the way it used to; what client’s are searching for, paying for… is love. Instead of celebrating, her day is spent answering the silent prayers of Father Phillip (Travis McMahon), who has lost his faith and providing counsel to her colleagues, the vivacious Lily (Kestie Morassi) and troubled Cindy (Ra Chapman).
Amidst the many dramas that unfold and the demands of the ‘no- nonsense’ Scarlet (Chantal Contouri), M’s secret birthday wish goes unanswered. That is, until Joey (Richard Wilson) knocks on her door; a young man, forgotten by the world,...

Believe the hype, folks. Sean Byrne's critically acclaimed feature film The Loved Ones (review here) is every bit as good as you have heard. Even better? Word from the director has surfaced about not only what's next, but what's up with a domestic release here in the States.
In an interview with What's Playing Byrne revealed the following: "[the next film] lends itself more to a prequel. I’ve actually got 12 pages of back-story so… watch this space."
As for why The Loved Ones hasn't been released here yet, the powers that be are still sorting out whether or not it will “get a wide release or a small boutique release. As you know, it’s got commercial qualities, but it’s also a very subversive take on the genre… but it will be coming out in theaters one way or the other."
Great news!

A frankly Superb new TV spot called “Horror Princess” has been released for my favourite horror film of 2010 – Aussie horror movie The Loved Ones.
The film – which has been dubbed “Pretty In Pink meets Wolf Creek” – comes from writer/director Sean Byrne and stars Robin McLeavy, Xavier Samuel, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and Jessica McNamee.
Teenager Brent is given over to depression and fits of self-mutilation after being behind the wheel for a car accident that killed his own father. That the accident was not at all Brent’s fault—he swerved to avoid a bloodied and beaten man who stumbled into the path of his car—does not seem to matter. His home, now reduced to just Brent and his mother, is a dry and muted place filled with nothing but guilt and quiet despair. The only bright point in Brent’s life at all is Holly, his beautiful and vibrant girlfriend,...

Bloody-Disgusting have posted two new clips from the upcoming low-budget horror film, The Loved Ones.
The two clips come after the official trailer, which you can view here.
The Loved Ones has been featured at various festivals for almost a year now, including slots at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and this month’s FrightFest in London, where it’s attracted a lot of praise from critics and audience members alike.
The film has been directed by Sean Byrne and features performances from Xavier Samuel, Jessica McNamee, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and John Brumpton.
Synopsis: In order to avoid a ghostly figure in the road, high school senior Brent Mitchell (Samuel) wraps his car around a tree, killing his father. Constantly confronted by his mother’s emotional collapse after the accident, Brent escapes into a marijuana fueled world of loud metal music to block the pain and guilt.

The Loved Ones is an Australian horror movie written and directed by Sean Byrne, and starring Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and Jessica McNamee. The film, which has been called “Pretty In Pink meets Wolf Creek”, is receiving its UK premiere at FrightFest next month, and as a teaser, we have the films official trailer:
Teenager Brent is given over to depression and fits of self-mutilation after being behind the wheel for a car accident that killed his own father. That the accident was not at all Brent’s fault—he swerved to avoid a bloodied and beaten man who stumbled into the path of his car—does not seem to matter. His home, now reduced to just Brent and his mother, is a dry and muted place filled with nothing but guilt and quiet despair. The only bright point in Brent’s life at all is Holly,...

The Australian horror film The Loved Ones has been wowing genre-loving audiences since it debuted at festivals last year. It won the Midnight Madness program award (an audience-voted award) at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and has done quite well at other fests, too. There's no Us distributor for the film just yet, but The Loved Ones is about to see release in Australia, so I'd like to present this imported trailer. I've tried to read relatively little about Sean Byrne's film (he writes and directs) which stars Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and Jessica McNamee. But this trailer pretty much sold me -- it's a simple premise, but the acting looks appropriate, the tone is great, and if what I've been told about the film holds true, it could be a tasty, harrowing experience. The screaming probably makes it vaguely not safe for work,...

The Loved Ones is an Australian shot horror feature from the production company Arclight Films. The film had a showing at the American Film Market last year, but is still having difficulty acquiring North American distribution (Bloody). The film will release in Australia September 30th and the film involves a twisted prom night where the guests are at the party against their wills. Much blood and mayhem ensues as the prom queen and king go head to head with drills, guns, and rocks in a demented tale of lost love. Have a watch of the first clip for The Loved Ones inside.

After nabbing the Midnight Madness award at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, things got kind of quiet in terms of the highly praised little film The Loved Ones (review here). We're talking lots of silence. Thankfully it looks as if the flick is ready to start making some noise again as a new trailer has hit!

There was a time when Australia was a blossoming new haven for great films. Fortunately, that time has not passed. In fact, Australia is continuing to produce great filmmakers making great films and The Loved Ones is yet another in-your-face fantastic example of the kind of edgy, boundary-pushing cinema devoted movie geeks can expect from the land down under.
Written and directed by Sean Byrne, The Loved Ones is a horror movie for true fans of the genre. This movie simply fucking rocks! Sorry for my .French. but, if you love excellent genre movies that provide the perfect mix of fright and fun, no apologies and just enough innovation to be fresh without being pretentious. you.ll love The Loved Ones.
The film stars Brent Mitchell (soon to be immortalized by teeny-boppers in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Xavier, a troubled teenager haunted by the memory of a family tragedy he feels guilty for.

Director: Sean Byrne Writer: Sean Byrne Starring: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine, Jessica McNamee, Richard Wilson, John Brumpton At some point in the recent past, we find the Brent (Xavier Samuel – scheduled to portray Riley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and his father driving along a rural road debating about their respective generation’s music taste – it’s the typical scenario, the music they each love is considered to be horrible noise to the other. A bloody young man is suddenly in front of their car and Brent careens the car into a tree. The accident leaves Brent emotionally scarred because his father died as a result of the crash. In the present, Brent and his best friend Sac (Richard Wilson) are discussing their plans for their upcoming high school dance. Brent’s girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine) has her house to herself for the weekend (so we all know...

When Australian horror film The Loved Ones had its world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival I had the chance to sit and talk with director Sean Byrne about his loving ode to the high school years. I've been sitting on the interview ever since, waiting for the film to actually go into wide release somewhere, but it's a good one, I'm tried of waiting and with the film about to screen at SXSW, now seems like a good time.
TB: So I'm guessing from this movie that you really liked high school.
Sb: (laughs) Oh, I hated high school, yeah. I think high school is such a pressure cooker environment, and there's a need for acceptance, and there's bullying. It's a really complicated, confusing part of everyone's life, which hopefully we can all relate to one way or another. It's a launch pad for all sorts of psychological damage.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

An enthusiastic buzz is expected to rampage the streets of Sydney's south-eastern suburbs, Randwick, Coogee and Clovelly Beach between 24 February and 7 March, when the Australian Film Festival hits off for the first time. With 11 days of indoor and outdoor screenings of pure Australian content - including the screening of J Harkness' psychological thriller, Birthday starring Kestie Morassi (pictured), Richard Wilson, Richard Wilson, Travis McMahon, Chantal Contouri and Natalie Eleftheriadis - plus, marquee events and Popcorn Taxi Q&As, the festival is being touted as the country's most comprehensive presentation of Australian film content. Emerging from the 2009 Australian Film Week, the Australian Film Festival "is a new concept for film festivals, which will be taking a modern and global view of what film is," says festival director Barry Watterson.

While some don't believe wishes come true, they certainly are for writer and director J. Harkness (Shot Of Love) as his latest film, Birthday, has been Officially Selected In Competition for the Anchorage International Film Festival, and will be releasing in Australia in 2010. J. Harkness' first wish was to adapt his stage play, Birthday, into an independent feature film. This wish came true when he found financial backing, a passionate and impressive cast, and the support of the sex industry, in which the film is set. All were inspired by Birthday's story of human intimacy and love within the conflicting and compelling world of sex workers, and the film was filmed in Harkness' home town of Adelaide in 2008, with a cast that includes Kestie Morassi (Wolf Creek), Richard Wilson (Clubland), Travis McMahon (Kokoda), Chantal Contouri and newcomer and co-producer Natalie Eleftheriadis in the lead role.

The Loved Ones is a very good horror film with only a few minor flaws. It's certainly one of the most original and tightly directed, explicit and gore fueled movies to emerge from Australia in some years. Set in the countryside and with a small cast of key characters, the film begins with a car-crash in which our teenage hero, Brent, swerves off the road to avoid an injured figure, smashing into a tree and killing his father who was a passenger. Fast-forward six months and Brent is coping through frequent use of marijuana and with the support of his well intentioned girlfriend, Holly.
It's the night of the end of school dance and a shy but pretty wallflower called Lola (Robin McLeavy) asks Brent (Xavier Samuel) if he'll take her to the dance.

The demise of several characters at the recent, packed world premiere of The Loved Ones during the Melbourne International Film Festival had the audience cheering. Perverse, demented and unpredictable, The Loved Ones is one messed-up little tale of unrequited love, powered by a sense of humor and grindhouse sensibility that’s sure to please a wide horror audience (and may even convert chick-flick devotees) if it’s allowed to. The Loved Ones is the first feature by Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne, and it definitely won’t be his last.
Fango caught up with Byrne, who has previously made a number of short films (including the supernatural Advantage, which played at last year’s New York City Horror Film Festival), a week prior to that first public screening of The Loved Ones, and he was understandably running on nervous energy after what he describes as a few “filmless years.” Then again,...

Top 10 Assassination Movies This week we have the Christmas Day release of the new MGM thriller Valkyrie starring Tom Cruise and directed by Bryan Singer in which Tom Cruise is out to assassinate Hitler, and MGM decided they wanted to sponsor a list of my Top Ten Assassination Films in conjunction with the release. How cool is that!?!? However, it wasn't all roses putting the piece together. When trying to figure out my top ten assassination films I had to quickly look at the list I was putting together and figure out is it a revenge film or an assassination film? For example, Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill is a revenge film carried out by an assassin... So it is it an assassination film? I decided - no. Gangs of New York was another one I felt fit into the revenge category and didn't make the list even though I love it.
