The Rolling Stones were one of the biggest bands in the world by the end of the 1960s. They had several No. 1 hits in that decade and added a few more in the 1970s. Musicians looking to find an audience with a solid tune could do a lot worse than play their songs. That was probably Johnny Winter’s mindset when he more or less stole The Rolling Stones’ song “Silver Train” in 1973.

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger wrote “Silver Train” years before they recorded it. They brought it to the Sticky Fingers sessions, produced a demo with the band, and then put it back in the vault.
Winter somehow heard that demo.

Gene Simmons fell ill during a Kiss concert on Wednesday night (April 12th) in Manaus, Brazil, and was forced to perform part of the set sitting down.
As originally reported by Brazilian journalist Igor Miranda, Simmons appeared woozy during the performance and eventually asked a member of the road crew for a chair.
Simmons proceeded to perform while seated, as seen in audience footage. For such a flamboyant and active performer, it’s an unfortunate sight to see Gene in full costume in a chair onstage. Still, it was admirable of him to go on with the show. Eventually Paul Stanley would pause the proceedings to give Gene a break.
“We’ll need to stop to take care of him because we love him, right?” Stanley told the audience. “Let’s give Gene a very loud ‘Gene’: 1, 2, 3! Ok! We’ll see each other soon, we love you.”

Starr joined The Beatles in 1962 after the band struggled to find the perfect drummer. After releasing several solo albums and songs, Starr formed the All-Starr band in 1989, who he continues to tour with today. However, unlike most bands, the All-Starr band consists of a constantly rotating set of musicians. In an interview with USA Today,...

Phish fans were dealt a devastating (though understandable) blow last week when the group announced that its annual New Year’s Eve residency at Madison Square Garden was being pushed back to April because of the Omicron surge.
“While Phish has played shows this year as the pandemic has continued, this variant’s ability for rapid transmission is unprecedented,” they wrote in a group statement. “We are also mindful that a significant number of people travel for these shows and then return to their communities, and we want to avoid accelerating transmission of the virus.

Quaker City Night Hawks have always worn their love for classic rock firmly on their denim jacket sleeves, but they’ve never sounded as rough, ready and rocking as they do on scorching new song “Hunters Moon.”

Free Ride, performed by The Edgar Winter’s Group, was first released in 1973 when it became a Us Top 20 hit. The song was one of the more fun and fast-moving pieces of the decade and is still a very well-respected song to this date. It’s been played in everything from discos to dance clubs and along with its use in movies and TV it’s been seen to be one of the favorite songs of several generations. It’s still used to this day by many different sources and is thoroughly enjoyed. Some folks might claim that the 70’s didn’t produce

Well, that was fast. After a big, Martin Scorsese-directed, two-hour series premiere on Sunday, HBO has determined they like the song they're hearing from Martin Scorsese, Terence Winter, and Mick Jagger. The network has renewed "Vinyl" for a second season. The rock 'n roll series has been met with mostly positive reviews (though we weren't particularly enamoured with it), and given how much the network has clearly put into the show, including weekly Ep releases for each episode, and a clearly lavish budget, I would've been surprised if they didn't go for at least one more season. Read More: Soundtrack For Martin Scorsese's HBO Series 'Vinyl' Includes Otis Redding, The Meters, Edgar Winter, Foghat, More "Vinyl" airs on Sunday nights. Check out the press release below. Los Angeles, Feb. 18, 2016 – Following the critically acclaimed launch of the show’s first season, HBO has renewed the drama series Vinyl for a second season,...

2016 is the year of the music-driven TV series. Cameron Crowe will go behind the scenes with "Roadies," Baz Luhrmann hits the clubs with the '70s-set "The Get Down," and also taking place in the same era and scene is Martin Scorsese's "Vinyl." It arrives on HBO next month, and as you might expect, it'll have a lot of music from the period for viewers to dive into. Volume 1 of the soundtrack is stuffed with soul, blues and rock'n roll, with tracks by Otis Redding, The Meters, Edgar Winter, Foghat, Ruth Brown, and more. It also feature original music by the critically acclaimed country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson (who provides the show's theme song "Sugar Daddy") and The Nasty Bits, a group fronted by Mick Jagger's son James Jagger, who also appears on the show. Meanwhile, David Johansen has re-recorded some jams by New York Dolls. Beyond that, HBO...

The Flash and How To Dull It: Demme and Streep Concoct Uneven Rock Cocktail
We’ve known the multifaceted Meryl Streep, amongst her many surprising and highly touted talents, has considerable range and presence as a vocalist. Director Mike Nichols was well aware of this, utilizing her untapped virtue in early titles like Silkwood (1983) and Postcards From the Edge (1990), back when everyone was mainly agog over her filmography of accents. Now, an auteur who has maintained an equally lucrative career of a wide ranging trajectory, returns for his first narrative venture since 2008’s Rachel Getting Married for another bit of familial dysfunction with Ricki and the Flash, a vehicle resting comfortably on the shoulders of Streep’s musical abilities. Considering the performer’s striking ease and expected plausibility as an aged musician still chasing the dream, it is unfortunate the cotton candy concoction surrounding her is so intensely belabored.

Thus Spoke the Spectacle by Eric Goodman Kraine Theater, NYC March 29-August 30, 2015
Thus Spoke the Spectacle identifies itself as a "theatrical rock performance" and draws on writers such as Noam Chomsky, Marshall McLuhan, and, as the title suggests, Guy Debord and Friedrich Nietzsche. This multimedia performance brings those influences together with video and still imagery that is accompanied by creator Eric Goodman on guitar and vocals and Leo Friere on drums. Divided into ten songs, Goodman’s hourlong piece sets out to critique what Debord, in the title of one of his best-known works, calls the society of the spectacle, the elevation of the superficial that is presented by mass media and passively consumed by the audience.
There are some quite successful juxtapositions. A newscaster reporting on mutilated animals quickly cuts to a commercial for a fast-food burger. Reports of murder and destruction give way to ads worshipping consumer goods.

Songs On Screen: All week HitFix will be featuring tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. When we talk about underrated directors, it's hard not to mention Walter Hill. Hill is an underrated director, the way Michael Ritchie and Peter Yates were underrated directors, the way Roger Donaldson, Joe Dante, and Fred Schepisi are underrated directors. They’re all underrated because it’s only when you look at their filmographies that the numbers start to total up and you realize, boy, he directed a lot of really good movies. In Hill’s case, that list includes "The Warriors," "48 Hours," "The Long Riders," "Southern Comfort,: "Hard Times," "Trespass," and "Wild Bill." Some great. Some solid. (My personal favorite of those is Hard Times, a pulpy film about bare-knuckle boxers in the Great Depression.) There were clunkers...

Legendary blues guitarist Johnny Winter, known for his fiery, speedy playing and his long-flowing white hair, died yesterday in Zurich, where he was on tour. He was 70. Winter, the older brother of Edgar Winter, was a contemporary of Eric Clapton and was one of the first blues guitarists so embraced by rock audiences that he was able to sell out arenas during his hey-day in the ‘70s. He was widely influenced by the blues guitarists who came before him, such as Muddy Waters, and he went on to inspire such guitarists as Stevie Ray Vaughan. Born in Beaumont, Texas in 1944, Winter got his start playing in clubs as a teenager. He signed with Columbia Records in 1969 and appeared at The Woodstock Festival that year. He performed with Janis Joplin, as well as his brother. He was inducted into The Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1988. Artists including Tom Morello, Kiss...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

There have been 23 Treehouse of Horror episodes thus far. That’s about a full seasons worth. Imagine that, an entire season of Treehouse of Horror episodes. I’m surprised they haven’t released a special Treehouse of Horror DVD set yet. Cue some Fox executive reading that and thinking “yes!”
The Treehouse of Horror episodes have always been a lot of fun and I look forward to them every year, even though their focus on horror has unfortunately drifted to other less suitable genre’s. The writer’s get to play around with the show in ways they can’t during the regular season. Characters can die, reveal terrible secrets, or be sent off to the looney bin. Prince’s small stature has always allowed him to slip in and out of different genres as he pleases. Soul, funk, pop, and metal were all blended into some sort of purple slurry. That’s why he can take one of his classics, “Let’s Go Crazy,” and seamlessly turn it into a fuzzed-out blues/hard-rock jam with touches of Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein.” Listen below and then go crazy, because Prince requested as much.
