Bryan Cranston’s blistering performance as Network‘s mad-as-hell prophet of the airwaves – now ranting from Broadway’s Belasco Theatre – is all the proof anyone could need that an actor can demolish any and all associations to a role that audiences carry to their seats.
I’m not referring to our memories of Peter Finch’s instant classic performance of raving newsman Howard Beale in Sidney Lumet’s 1976 masterwork. The ghost Cranston battles is his own, and even if by now he’s an old hat at ripping away a perma-glued fictional persona, his Network star turn is no less mesmerizing, so thoroughly does the actor strip away Walter White.
And Lbj (All the Way) and Dalton Trumbo (Trumbo) and hapless Hal (Malcolm in the Middle). But those characters – might as well toss in Seinfeld‘s oily dentist Tim Whatley, too – can’t really compete with Walter White, the high...

Theater fans are growing excited about the Tony Awards, but leaders of Actors’ Equity Association may not share their enthusiasm. The New York Post reported that the stage performers union is engaged in a dispute with the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League over the groups’ decision to grant a special Tony to “The Lost Colony,” which has run every summer since 1937 at the Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island, N.C. The show, a self-billed “symphonic pageant” about the lost colony of Roanoke Island, lists American Theatre Wing chairman William Ivey Long as its production designer. According to the Post, Equity president Nick Wyman has written a letter of complaint to Broadway League Executive Director Charlotte St. Martin, taking issue with the production’s employment of nonunion actors. St. Martin reportedly responded that Equity representatives were present at the meeting in which the decision was made to honor “The Lost Colony,...

Actors' Equity President Nick Wyman says he was "disturbed and distraught" by the stage accident on Dec. 20 which left actor Chris Tierney seriously injured.
Because Tierney is the fourth actor injured in the troubled production of 'Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark', it's a situation Wyman called "frustrating and maddening and, to some, infuriating."
In a Facebook post Saturday, Wyman urged critics not to take issue with the actors union for the Broadway production which has been plagued with problems. Wyman insists that the union has done its due diligence to protect the actors.
"Our staff spent so much time at the Foxwoods Theatre during rehearsals, I’m surprised the producers didn’t charge them rent," wrote Wyman.
"I have no idea how many potential problems staff cleared up or how many accidents-in-waiting they forestalled," he added. "I just know they were and are a powerful force for our protection and without them,...

Here's a look back at Back Stage's top 10 memories:10. Undead DAYTIMEBack in 2009—when the daytime-drama format looked to be going the way of the wild polar bear—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists New York local president Holter Graham sounded a mournful note about the format's future. "The writing was on the wall about daytime and that it was a changing market a long time ago," Graham said. "The economic crisis given to us by the Bush administration sped up that process and made that writing on the wall bright yellow highlighter."That highlighter ink didn't wash away in 2010, but it faded a little. In 2009, CBS announced that its long-running soaps "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" would come to an end. This year no such similar announcement came, the networks instead making multiyear commitments to dramas such as "The Young and the Restless" and "Days of Our Lives.

That same year, Patrick Quinn, the popular president of the union, resigned from his elected role as preparations were made for him to succeed Eisenberg.
