"Shrek" was a very important movie in animation history. It provided DreamWorks with its first true breakthrough hit, taking in $492 million in 2001. It ensured that Disney would have meaningful competition in the animation space for years to come, which has only been furthered in recent years with the dominance of Illumination in the marketplace. For DreamWorks though, it birthed what would become the studio's flagship franchise, one that has generated more than $3 billion since its inception. That franchise's biggest moment came in 2004 when "Shrek 2" hit theaters.
The animation house founded by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg hit a home run by pairing Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey in the first film, in no small part thanks to the stellar supporting cast.

Just two years ago, it seemed like the summer blockbuster might be a thing of the past. After Covid kept cinemas closed across the United States for the majority of 2020, the box office reopened in 2021 on uncertain footing, with many high profile flops and a soft performance for the movies overall. That summer seemed like the harbinger of the end for the seasonal release strategy that “Jaws” perfected all the way back in 1975, wherein the hottest months hosts the biggest titles — marketed aggressively to theatergoers. It seemed like those days were behind us, and the streaming age had finally overtaken the days when movies could be events. So thank goodness for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Things aren’t entirely rosy at cinemas again (and Hollywood writ large is a mess), but things are improving at the box office with those July 21 releases helping to massively goose theatrical business, picking up where...

Just how twisted is the new “Sausage Party” sequel series? Even star Kristen Wiig is shocked by it.
The upcoming “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” series is set to premiere on Prime Video in 2024, with original voice actors Wiig, Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton all returning for more tasty fun. The cast is rounded out by franchise newcomers Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester.
Creator Rogen recently revealed to Empire magazine that “Foodtopia” is even crazier than the 2016 adult animated film. “We had Kristen Wiig in picking up a few lines the other day, and I think we’ve all become desentised to it, because we’ll just be like, ‘Roll the scene!’, and then she was like, ‘Oh my God?! This is insane!,'” Rogen recalled.

Seth Rogen is teasing the Sausage Party sequel series and talking about an “unbelievably shocking” scene that even caught co-star Kristen Wiig off guard.
“There’s one specific scene that had a special screening for the Amazon PR people,” Rogen told Empire magazine about Sausage Party: Foodtopia. “‘You should all just start wrapping your heads around this now. You’ll probably have to talk about this a lot.'”
He continued, “We had Kristen Wiig in picking up a few lines the other day, and I think we’ve all become desensitized to it because we’ll just be like, ‘Roll the scene!’, and then she was like, ‘Oh my God?! This is insane!'”

The team behind Sausage Party: Foodtopia, the sequel series to 2016’s Sausage Party, is cooking up something wickedly funny for the 8-episode follow-up to the most talked about food fight in cinema. Speaking with Empire, Seth Rogen says the series will likely strike audiences as “unbelievably shocking” as the writing team goes above and beyond to bring the property to the next level.
Rogen is convinced people will talk about Sausage Party: Foodtopia in ways other animated series fail to inspire. He’s particularly proud of a scene that will leave audiences picking their jaws up off the floor. “There’s one specific scene that had a special screening for the Amazon PR people. Just when you thought Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was going to be the only for-adults-only adaptation of the classic children’s story this year, Variety reports today on an entirely different project in the works from Boat Rocker Studios and Bay Mills Studios.
Titled “Christopher Robin,” this particular adaptation of the public domain story is said to be a hybrid of live action and animation, and it very much aims to be rated “R”.

The minute you see the words “The Addams Family,” no doubt you snap your fingers twice.. The Addams clan has seen several incarnations since debuting as a series of The New Yorker cartoons penned by Charles Addams in 1938. The cartoons and the various films and television shows that rose in their wake perfectly blend the humorous and the macabre while focusing on the tight-knit family of Gomez, Morticia, their children Pugsley and Wednesday, and Uncle Fester.
The latest iteration is Tim Burton’s series “Wednesday,” set to debut on Netflix on November 23. The series centers on a teenage Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) trying to solve many mysteries, one being how to cement her identity outside the shadow of her ever-glamorous mother, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Wednesday is also tasked with harnessing her budding psychic ability to solve a serial killer case at Nevermore Academy and cracking a murder mystery that involved her parents 25 years ago.

The Addams Family is an icon of happy madness, morbid fun, and macabre amusement. It is as much a sideshow as a franchise, and equal parts parachute, noose, and straitjacket. It was created in 1938 as a series of unrelated single-panel cartoons by Charles Addams, the only cartoonist The New Yorker magazine ever recommended for psychiatric evaluation. So it is a shame we’ll never know what the cartoonist would’ve thought of Tim Burton’s Wednesday, the latest and most promising adaptation of the warped family entertainment for televised consumption in quite some time.
Featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, and Luis Guzmán as family patriarch Gomez, Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega as the title character. The cast also includes Christina Ricci, the most iconic Wednesday Addams from the 1990s films directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Hold on to your buns, because "Sausage Party" is back! Prime Video has announced an order for a new animated series called "Sausage Party: Foodtopia," based on the feature of the same name featuring anthropomorphic foodstuffs in a grocery store with foul mouths, big dreams, and sex drives rivaling a teenager discovering internet tube sites for the first time. We called the film "raunchy, raw, and one of the most outrageous, funniest movies of the year," in our review back in 2016, and we definitely weren't alone. Not only was "Sausage Party" the first 3D computer-animated film to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America, but it became the highest-grossing R-rated animated film until it was surpassed by "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" in 2020. The film was so extreme, it had to be heavily edited to avoid an Nc-17 rating, which only added to the film's mystique.

The sequel is as hopeless as the first feature-length animated Addams Family, an eyeball-achingly bright and manic kids movie
In 2019, the hopelessly uncreepy animation The Addams Family made it look as if film-makers Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon had dug up the bluish mottled corpse of Charles Addams’s creation, attempted CPR and passed it off as a reboot. Now, here’s film No 2; and after a couple years there’s an unmistakably rotten smell wafting up from the franchise. As charmless as its predecessor, The Addams Family 2 is without an iota of ooky, nor any shred of kooky. Really, it’s just kind of ghastly – and not in the intended way.
Inexplicably, most of the talented voice cast return for more punishment. Oscar Isaac is paterfamilias Gomez, with Charlize Theron playing wife Morticia (though without the deliciousness Angelica Houston brought to the 90s live action movies). Actually, the...

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and...just like us? Like so many animated movies these days, The Addams Family 2 takes dark, subversive and ghostly characters and renders them human. The enduring appeal of the Addams Family is how unique they are. With four loose screws, a Victorian mansion, a couple black dresses and some bone-dry sarcasm, one can easily distinguish the Gothic clan from any other household. No longer.
Since Morticia's 1938 debut on the pages of the New Yorker, in a cartoon drawn by Charles Addams, the Addams Family has been gentrified in every way possible: in video games, spin-offs, feature films, dozens of commercials, and now, two animated movies directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and written by Matt Lieberman, Pamela Patter and Eric Rivinoja.

Chicago – Sometimes sequels serve as a cinematic do-over, a second chance to fix what they got wrong the first time. Other times, they offer a chance to build on the bones of a good story and make it better. But all too often, they’re lazy cash grabs to half forgotten films where no one seems to have learned any lessons from the first outing … or have any idea what inspired affection for the characters in the first place. In case you can’t tell, “The Addams Family 2” is a creepy, kooky, wrong kind of ooky experience.

The 2019 animated reboot of “The Addams Family” had a tough hill to climb, tasked with appealing to both fans of the classic television series and the popular 1990s live-action movies, but directors Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon — the duo behind the raunchy “Sausage Party” — were able to make something darling. The duo’s followup, the unimaginatively titled “The Addams Family 2,” doesn’t continue that trend and, in many regards,

The devil is in the details — or, in “The Addams Family 2,” a digitally animated sequel aimed at ages six and over, in the demented ghoulish sparkle of jokes that are just macabre and kiddie witty enough to tickle you. Take, for instance, Uncle Fester, voiced by Nick Kroll with an extreme goofy lisp, sizing up the creaky brown wood camper in which the Addams family are about to take a three-week cross-country trek and saying, “Oh, it’s a hybrid — half car, half eyesore!” Or the way that Morticia, voiced by Charlize Theron in the most musical of aristocratic purrs, doesn’t just walk but glides around in her cadaverous skin-tight dress that drapes over the floor in trails that look like black silk octopus legs. Or Gomez (Oscar Isaac), in his Igor-as-head-waiter hodgepodge of an Old World accent, saying, “Tell that Billie Eilish she’s a little too sunny for my taste.

If you’ve seen The Addams Family, the 2019 animated revival of Charles Addams’ ghoulish cartoons, then the disappointments of The Addams Family 2 won’t be surprising. This predictable and bland sequel, directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, follows the not-so-grisly family on their first road trip. Maybe it’s because the film’s production, like so many others, was interrupted by Covid-19, or maybe its creators think that younger audiences are less astute viewers, but there’s something about this sequel that just isn’t working.

September was month of extremes at the box office, with both the highest grossing film of the year and the lowest grossing weekend since May. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first Marvel movie to open in September, and the gambit paid off, with the film crossing the gross of Black Widow to become the year’s number one movie, and it will soon overtake Bad Boys for Life to become the top grossing film since 2019. Other than Shang-Chi, though, the box office has been a total wasteland, with the next best opening weekend gross this month being Dear Evan Hansen’s meager $7.4 million. The dry spell is ending though, and after a rocky summer, the packed fall movie season is starting with a bang this weekend with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Many Saints of Newark, and The Addams Family 2, not to mention...

There’s a great vibe out there about moviegoing right now — believe it — and October is just the beginning. While we had event films during the summer, we’ve got ’em all jam-packed in the next month, kicking off with Sony’s long-awaited Venom: Let There Be Carnage on Friday stateside, followed by MGM/United Artist Releasing’s No Time to Die on October 8, Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Kills on October 15, and Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune on October 22.
Some have written into me about shortened hours at multiplexes in the last month and empty auditoriums post Shang-Chi‘s huzzah over Labor Day weekend. Hopefully, this assembly line of tentpoles will turn all of that around. Remember, excellent event product makes the box office go round, not just titles on a marquee.
Sony is conservatively estimating $40 million over three days at 4,200 locations for the Venom sequel, including Imax and Premium Large Format,...

Remember that blood bath that was suppose to occur between two major studio animated family films during the first weekend of October?
Well, as reporter earlier this week Sony decided to go into talks with Amazon to sell off their Hotel Transylvania 4, and now MGM/United Artists Releasing is taking their sequel Addams Family 2 theatrical day-and-date on PVOD for $19.99. The release date remains Oct. 1.
All of this occurs due to the rising delta variant, the fact that kids are still unvaccinated and markets like NY and LA are requiring vax cards. When it comes to these family titles, you’ve got to give them an option to watch it where they feel comfortable, and that’s what studios are doing.
Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon and Laura Brousseau direct the sequel; the first animated feature grossed $203.7M WW.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Working Title have an updated feature version of The Borrowers in development, based on the Mary Norton book series of the same name. Sausage Party and The Addams Family filmmaker Conrad Vernon is in talks to helm off a screenplay by Patrick Burleigh.
The Borrowers is an action adventure that follows a family of tiny people who live secretly in the walls and floors of an English house and “borrow” from the big people in order to survive. Working Title and Polygram, which was later absorbed by Universal in 1998, originally released a live-action feature adaptation in 1997 starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and directed by Peter Hewitt. The pic grossed close to $23 million at the domestic box office. Similar to the first movie, the new version will be a live-action take, I hear.

Italy’s View Conference, the week-long confab featuring top creatives from around the world in film, television, games, virtual reality, and more is going entirely digital this year with all live sessions being made available for free to a global audience.
Usually the high-caliber event, now in its 21st edition, which spotlights the latest in computer graphics, animation, and visual effects of various types, is held in Turin against an Alpine backdrop. Over the years it has evolved into a Davos-like conference where the digital creative community’s top execs fly in to hear each other’s talks and hobnob, perhaps over a nice bottle of Barolo. That aspect due to Covid-19 is being scrapped this year though “virtual rooms” following presentations are being set up.
Of course it won’t be the same thing. But conference director Maria Gutierrez says there are also some advantages to being online only.

The Addams Family 2 is officially set to bring its wholesomely horrifying brand of animated dread back to the big screen for the 2021 Halloween season.
The sequel, arriving via MGM’s United Artists banner, follows up the 2019 sleeper animated iteration of the often-adapted iconic 1960s spooky snap-happy sitcom, which went on to gross $203 million worldwide against a $24 million budget. Check out the teaser trailer announcing the sequel just below.
