Charlize Theron’s Tully explored the relationship between a mother of three and her night nanny. Theron played the role of a postpartum mother, taking up the challenging task of gaining nearly 50 pounds. The Atomic Blonde actress underwent extreme struggles in gaining weight and then losing it.

Actor Charlize Theron has gained and lost weight off and on for feature film roles. In the movie Tully, Theron went up to one of her heaviest weights. And doing so would take a toll on her mood.
Charlize Theron put on fifty pounds for ‘Tully’ Charlize Theron | Michael Tran/FilmMagic
Theron might not have had to gain the amount of weight that she did for her 2018 feature Tully. The drama saw the Oscar-winner gain 50 pounds to play a suburban mother with an unplanned child on the way. Theron took it upon herself to put on as much weight as possible for her role. And although it helped her performance, it was at the expense of her mood.
“I gained close to 50 pounds for this film,” Theron once told Et. “I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to...

So maybe Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hasn’t exactly been a worthwhile installment in the ongoing franchise. But it has at least given fans another slice of nostalgia, bringing back the surviving core Ghostbusters, not to mention Janine and that dickless Walter Peck. But there are still a few familiar faces that are sorely missing. So, where were Dana and Louis? Well, it turns out they weren’t really even considered for returns.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan partly dodged why both Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully— the one-time possessed neighbor of Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett, was absent. “That would be a Jason Reitman question. That was more of an Afterlife story. We never wrote a role for Louis Tully in Frozen Empire. We’ve got enough characters in this story. I love Tully by the way. I’m a huge Rick Moranis fan. Ghostbusters movies stretch credulity, but this is ridiculous.
At the start of Ghostbusters II, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform for bored kids at a birthday party. It’s only been five years since they blew up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in downtown New York and destroyed Gozer’s portal atop a city high rise. And yet, no one remembers the work the boys did to save the city.
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are completely unknown to Gen Z, even to the grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), even to a kid so into podcasts that he calls himself Podcast. It’s only been 30 years since the team drove the Statue of Liberty down the center of the city.

Sex is a lot like filmmaking. You dive in when you’re ready, trust your companions, and learn from experience. Few people start out as experts, but there’s beauty in being allowed to try and fail in different environments over the years.
In her first feature film lead, comedian and former late night host Lilly Singh plays Maya, a computer engineer who takes a part-time job teaching sex education. After an incident in her teens led to her mother moving them back to India, Maya not only repressed her sexuality but grew to actively fear it — and now she’s teaching teens about sex despite having never done it herself. Singh, Neel Patel, and director Sara Zandieh co-wrote the film, which premiered at SXSW on March 12.
Sonia Dhillon Tully plays Maya’s hyperconservative single mother Veena, a role that has unfortunately been tread and retread in the South Asian-American film ouevre.

Marvel's first family has swooped in unexpectedly to wish the masses a happy Valentine's Day as part of Marvel Studios' official cast announcement for what is now being called "The Fantastic Four." As you can see from the first-look artwork, all your faves are present and accounted for. There's Reed Richards, the stretch-tastic Mister Fantastic himself (Pedro Pascal); his partner in science, life, and superheroing, Sue "The Invisible Woman" Storm (Vanessa Kirby); Sue's quite literally hot-headed younger brother Johnny (Joseph Quinn), aka The Human Torch; their gruff, street-wise pal Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach); and, of course, there's H.E.R.B.I.E., can't forget about him!
Wait, who?
Yes, if you found yourself wondering who the Johnny 5-like 'bot holding a cup on the "Fantastic Four" poster was, you're indubitably not alone. Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics or H.E.R.B.I.E. was...

Alexander Payne’s 2023 film, The Holdovers, left an enduring mark on my cinematic experience this year. The movie’s brilliance lies in its portrayal of significant characters like the strict history teacher, Paul Hunham, portrayed impeccably by Paul Giamatti. As we delve into the lives of characters like Mary Lamb, the head cook at the boarding school played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and the rebellious student Angus Tully, played by Dominic Sessa, a captivating story unfolds. The narrative centers around Mr. Hunham, who finds himself trapped with holdover students during the Christmas holidays at the prestigious boarding school called the Barton Academy. The film beautifully weaves together moments of hilarity and a symphony of sentimental emotions and nostalgia as these characters have to spend the holiday break together. The characters’ warmth and relatability felt very nostalgic, like cozy hugs on a chilly winter night. Mr. Hunham’s character undergoes a remarkable transformation,...

In The Holdovers (2023), by Alexander Payne, Angus Tully, portrayed by Dominic Sessa, emerges as a character who has both relatable and complex attributes. Tully’s struggles with loneliness and his coping mechanism of rebellious behavior resonate profoundly. His reluctance to show vulnerability mirrors the hesitations we often face in revealing our true selves. Tully’s journey unfolds as a delicate balance between shielding his pain and extending compassion to others. In our moments of solitude, his character becomes a poignant reminder that behind every rebellious exterior lies a complex web of emotions, making Tully not just a character but a reflection of our struggles.
Spoilers Ahead
Tully’s Intellectual Brilliance And Loneliness
Tully, in The Holdovers, is a character who stands out for his remarkable intellect and an unfortunate sense of isolation. Despite being one of Barton Academy’s brightest minds, his brilliance is overshadowed by an overwhelming sense of isolation that he feels.

Back in 2004, during a press tour for Sideways — Alexander Payne’s wine-soaked buddy movie starring Paul Giamatti as a depressive divorcé — the filmmaker and the actor were in Omaha in front of an audience.
In a moment of showmanship, Payne whipped out a local phone book, declaring Giamatti so skilled, he could make even that sound interesting. And sure enough, as Giamatti recited the listings, he brought the house down. “Thanks for rolling with that stunt,” Payne tells Giamatti now, some 20 years later, in a New York City hotel room, where they are, once again, on a press tour.
The film reuniting them is The Holdovers and Payne designed Giamatti’s role just for him. Paul Hunham is a beleaguered Classics professor at Barton Academy, a New England boarding school steeped in history and privilege. Like Giamatti’s Sideways character, Hunham also likes a drink (more on that later), but...

There are actors who are unafraid to look foolish or petty in roles, who lean in to being unlikable onscreen when the mood (and the awards season) strikes, who might slum it by occasionally sporting an unflattering haircut or [shudder] reading glasses. And then there is 55-year-old Giamatti, who seems to effortlessly slip into maximum sad-sack mode at a moment’s notice. It has been six years since Alexander Payne directed his last film, Downsizing, so to watch his new movie is something of an event. The Holdovers — which Focus Features will release later this fall — marks Payne’s reunion with Paul Giamatti, the star of Sideways, and once again the two spark each other in a rewarding way. This new movie is not without its flaws, but it is an engaging and often touching comic drama that builds power as it moves toward its immensely satisfying conclusion.
David Hemingson (best known for writing TV series like Kitchen Confidential) has crafted an incisive screenplay for Payne. We all know Charlize Theron has put herself through the ringer for some of her most memorable performances – and maybe some of her flops as well – with weight gain proving a bit of a secret weapon, packing on the pounds for both Monster and Tully. But now that she’s nearing 50, she is refusing to put her body through anything like that again.
Speaking with Allure, Charlize Theron discussed the push and pull of gaining and losing weight for roles, naming both 2003’s Monster – for which she won the Academy Award – and 2018’s Tully, for which she put on nearly 50 pounds to play a woman going through postpartum depression. “I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off…When I was 27, I did Monster. I lost 30 pounds, like, overnight. I missed...

Charlize Theron’s days of gaining weight for roles are over.
The actress told Allure in a recent interview: “I will never, ever do a movie again and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll gain 40 pounds.’ I will never do it again because you can’t take it off.
“When I was 27, I did ‘Monster’, I lost 30 pounds, like, overnight. I missed three meals, and I was back to my normal weight.”
Theron won a Best Actress Oscar for her 2003 flick “Monster”, in which she starred as Aileen alongside Christina Ricci, Bruce Dern and more.
Despite being able to shed the weight after that, she said it was harder gaining 50 pounds for the 2018 film “Tully”.

Charlize Theron is devoted to her craft to give life to roles that can be demanding such as Tully and Monster. Both roles required the star to make physical changes — something that Theron is not keen on ever doing again.

Although Theron had a relatively easy time bouncing back to her normal weight after her Oscar-winning performance in 2003’s Monster, the same could not be said for when she did it again for 2018’s Tully.

Note: The following contains spoilers for “Firefly Lane” Season 2 Part 2.
Filming the end of “Firefly Lane” Season 2 Part 2, specifically the scene in which Kate dies, was difficult enough for Sarah Chalke, but an irritated neighbor interrupting with his leaf blower made ending the series even more challenging.
The final episodes of “Firefly Lane” bring the adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s book to a close. Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Chalke’s Kate reconcile after falling out over a car accident involving Marah once Kate tells Tully she has breast cancer. After trying everything, Kate dies peacefully in the backyard of her house on the Seattle Sound (shot in British Columbia), and Tully goes inside briefly before it happens.
“I was sitting there looking at all the small things that Kate sees right before she dies, when Tully goes inside for a minute. It was just like a gift from nature,” Chalke told TheWrap.

In addition to Kate (Sarah Chalke) and Tully (Katherine Heigl) just barely missing each other on opposite elevators as Kate tries to deliver some devastating news to her estranged best friend, a short clip of a suggestive wedding scene between Johnny and Tully played after the credits of the Netflix series’ final episode.
Throughout Part 2 of Season 2, the scene’s puzzle pieces slowly come together, but at first it looks like Tully, dressed in white, might be getting ready to marry Johnny after Kate has died. As it turns out, it was Marah’s wedding, and Tully ended up with Danny.

David Hammons has been one of the most influential creatives in the world of fine arts for the past half-century, but his elusive persona has turned him into an enigma. Working in a variety of mediums ranging from sculpture to prints of his own body to elaborate museum installations, he has found consistent success without limiting himself to an easily defined visual style. And he virtually never grants interviews or public appearances, allowing his work to speak for itself.
That combination of talent and evasiveness has caused many an artist to be deified throughout human history, so it’s hardly surprising that Hammons has taken on larger-than-life status among some art aficionados. Now, a new documentary is attempting to shed light on Hammons’ provocative career at the top of the art world. “The Melt Goes on Forever: The Art & Times of David Hammon” examines the stylistic evolutions that Hammons has...

Firefly Lane is a series created by Maggie Friedman starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke.
Well, all good things must come to an end, so, unfortunately, here we have the last episodes of the second season of this sentimental series, which mixes friendship, life and… what is left when it is over.
Firefly Lane (2022)
Perhaps too much telefilm, perhaps too sentimental, but, undoubtedly, Firefly Lane has managed to win a place among the sappiest and straight-to-the-heart film lovers.
As a critic once said, despite everything, we will miss them.
Do you know that even a broken clock strikes twice a day? This gentleman was absolutely right.
We will miss them.
Enjoy the ending.
Tears are guaranteed.

Deciding when is the right time to conceive a child is a huge decision for anyone, let alone the career-minded woman at the center of “Clock.” Writer-director Alexis Jacknow amps up the anxiety by blending science and religion into paranoia-soaked mayhem, conjuring resonant emotion and haunting menace in this psychological horror film about an unconventional route to reproduction. Like a taut, “Rosemary’s Baby”-inspired “Black Mirror” episode, the film’s defiant sentiment that society should stop pressuring women to procreate is bold, brutal and bloodier than a pregnant woman’s bloody show.

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. This week it was announced that Oscar winner Jessica Chastain (“Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will headline an upcoming limited series at Apple TV+. Details of the story are being closely guarded, other than that it will be called “The Savant” and is based on a Cosmopolitan article. While the official announcement didn’t confirm it, the series is likely based on Andrea Stanley’s 2019 article “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” Stanley — who is a consultant on the show — detailed the work of a woman known as “The Savant” who investigates violent men in hopes of preventing major attacks and mass shootings from occurring. No timetable has been announced for the series.

It's been an emotional journey for Kate (Sarah Chalke) and Tully (Katherine Heigl), but will their friendship withstand more hurdles?
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the back half of Firefly Lane Season 2, which will bring the dramedy to an end for good.
The series has followed Kate and Tully's relationship over 30 years, and just like real-life, it hasn't been easy sailing for either of them.
The first half of the second season found the pair ending their years-long friendship, but fans were left with plenty of cliffhangers.
One of those cliffhangers involved Kate's ex-husband, Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson), seemingly getting married to Tully.
"That's the thing about big life changes; you don't get to choose when they happen," Johnny Ryan shared in the new trailer. "You just have to hold on tight to the people you love and make your way through it."

It’s a time-honored Hollywood tradition: The fastest way to turn a hottie into a nottie is by saddling them with a clunky pair of spectacles. And while the cliché has fallen out of favor in recent years (instances of satire notwithstanding), the “Nerd Glasses” TV trope makes a roaring comeback in Netflix’s Firefly Lane.

With Wednesday’s release of Netflix’s Firefly Lane, we got to know future BFFs Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey — played as adults by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, respectively — just as they got to know one another. The former was portrayed as always having been gorgeous and outgoing, a star waiting to be born; the latter, bookish and reserved (as telegraphed by her ever-present glasses — TV shorthand for mousy). Yet they forged a relationship that lasted decades, at least until… dun dun Dun!
