As writers hit the picket lines during the 146-day WGA strike, they were absolutely barred from writing anything for the Hollywood studios and streamers. But there was no reason they couldn’t write their own scripts on spec. Now, as Hollywood’s writers return to work, those TV pilot and movie scripts written over the course of the strike could make their way to market.
There were plenty of jokes on social media about writers taking advantage of the strike to tackle passion projects that had long been put off due to other obligations. So, with the strike over, how many actually did it?
Variety spoke with several WGA members to see what they worked on during their months on strike and what they did to stay creative. One writer said he had a chance to write a comic book for one of the major publishers during the strike, which he called a “nice distraction.

Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

Freelance animator Marcus Kliewer was already having a rough year when the pandemic hit. Supported by a Canadian unemployment program, the Vancouver resident decided to pour his energy into writing short horror stories and posting them on Reddit’s r/nosleep community.
The 28-year-old posted his first story of the pandemic in September. Three months later, his work was discovered by Ground Control Entertainment’s Scott Glassgold. In June, Netflix announced a screen-rights deal for his story “We Used to Live Here,” with Blake Lively attached to star and produce alongside Ground Control and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho.
“If it wasn’t for Cerb (the unemployment program), I would be landscaping right now,” Kliewer told IndieWire. “Instead, I was writing six days a week full time.”
Kliewer said he also made a two book, high-six-figure deal with a major publishing company; he’s not saying which one, since it’s yet to be announced.

Among the many tricks 2018’s “The Haunting of Hill House” played on its viewers was hiding dozens of ghosts in plain sight throughout the 10-episode Netflix series. The treat, obviously, was being the fan who could spot all the spirits on their own. So when “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” the second chapter of Mike Flanagan’s horror anthology, launched last Friday, people went right to work looking for the specters lurking in the shadows of Bly’s halls.
Now, if you had a little more trouble finding them this time around, here’s a tip from Flanagan himself: Check out Flora’s (Amelie Bea Smith) dollhouse.
“The dollhouse is like our Marauder’s Map for this season,” Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Monday. “It was an idea that was actually born of Rebecca Klingel, one of our writers who also casually came up with the concept...

The first teaser for Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor kicks off with a classic horror movie trope: a child singing a creepy lullaby. From there, it wanders into all places dark and scary — from an ominous well to a living doll to a sodden woman rising from a lake. October 9th cannot come soon enough.
Bly Manor is Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s second season of The Haunting franchise, following 2018’s terrifying The Haunting of Hill House, based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 horror classic. The second season...

Cole Sprouse on His New Podcast and Skeet Ulrich Leaving ‘Riverdale’: ‘I’m Ride or Die for That Guy’
Cole Sprouse has been making good use of his time in lockdown, playing lots of video games — specifically “Animal Crossing” — and growing some epic facial hair. His mustachio’d appearance was originally for his role in the upcoming Lionsgate comedy “Undercover” and was recently documented in (socially distant) photoshoot that went viral.
The “Riverdale” actor is also debuting a new narrative podcast “Borrasca,” in which he stars and produces. The eight-episode mystery series debuted May 25. Rebecca Klingel, a writer for “The Haunting of Hill House,” wrote and created the show, centering on a thread that originated on the social news aggregation website Reddit.
It’s Sprouse’s first foray into voice acting, a new challenge he relished in, he said on “Variety Live.”
“It’s just finding that balance between how much emphasis you have to place on reading the dialogue when someone is only getting an emotion through something audible,...

As horror fans know all too well, sometimes the most terrifying monsters are places: Riverdale (the town with pep that’s also the murder capital of the world), Hill House (whatever walks there walks alone), Twin Peaks, Salem’s Lot — atmospheric horror wreathes these landmarks and towns. There’s not one beast to eradicate, everything is infected.
Such is the case with the upcoming horror podcast Borrasca, which was created by The Haunting of Hill House writer Rebecca Klingel and stars Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead in the dark, campy Archie Comics TV series Riverdale.
