Exclusive: CBS has solidified the midseason chances of the untitled Rob Schneider comedy pilot with an order for a new pilot as well as a number of additional scripts. The multi-camera comedy, which Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton based on the actor's real-life experience, stars Schneider as a confirmed bachelor who has just married into a tight-knit Mexican-American family. I hear CBS liked the concept and Schneider, who tested very well, but wants to make some tweaks. A number of actors who played members of the family will be recast. By ordering backup scripts, CBS puts the project on track for midseason. If the network likes the new pilot, the comedy will be able to go into production right away for a midseason launch. Back in May, CBS didn't order any midseason comedy series, leaving that decision for after the upfronts. The Rob Schneider project, from CBS TV Studios and the Tannenbaum Co.

This is an update of my Tuesday story that the Rob Schneider comedy pilot is in serious contention for a midseason order. CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler confirmed this morning that she plans to pick up comedy series for midseason and will focus on that when she goes back to Los Angeles. While she wouldn't elaborate which pilots are still in the running, I hear that the two that have a real shot are the untitled Rob Schneider and Peter Knight half-hours. The Rob Schneider/Lew Morton comedy is considered likely to go to series, while the Peter Knight still has a shot too.

With CBS' pickup for the frontrunners on the drama side, Person of Interest, and comedy side, Two Broke Girls, the next tier of contenders are rising to frontrunner status. The two locks on the hourling side seem to be ensemble cop drama Rookies and procedural The Rememberer, with How To Be A Gentleman the top dog on the comedy side. I hear CBS brass are split over an early favorite, the Susannah Grant medical drama, though odds still seem to be in its favor. Meanwhile, another early favorite, Pi show Hail Mary, has been the subject of contradicting rumors over the past day or so -- from "it's a pass" to "it's going." But the pilot's fortunes have definitely fallen, so it no longer seems to be a sure thing. Depending on how many comedies it brings back, CBS may pick up another comedy pilot to series, possibly Peter Knight.

CBS made a couple of bold scheduling moves last year by shipping "Survivor" to Wednesday nights and starting a new comedy block anchored by "The Big Bang Theory" on Thursdays.
This year? We're guessing less of that.
The biggest shakeup will come within a show when the network and Warner Bros. TV announce how they plan to reconfigure "Two and a Half Men" post-Charlie Sheen -- and with the news that the show unsuccessfully courted Hugh Grant, any such announcement is likely to be a pretty big one.
As for the schedule as a whole, CBS is once again working from a position of relative success, which means that we won't see more than a handful of new shows in the fall, and most of the newcomers will likely be protected by established lead-ins. Here's our best guess as to what CBS will unveil on Wednesday, May 19. (You can...

Exclusive: Mr. Sunshine co-creators/ executive producers Alex Barnow and Marc Firek have signed a new two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, which produces the freshman ABC comedy series. The seven-figure pact is the duo's third consecutive at the studio. The future of "Two and a Half Men" is, let's say, cloudy at the moment.
If we had to guess right now, we'd say that the show, which is currently the most-watched comedy on TV, will be back in some form -- with or without Charlie Sheen -- for 2011-12. CBS will announce its lineup for next season in mid-May, which means the network, Warner Bros. TV, creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and Sheen have about two and a half months to figure out what happens next.
But what if the worst-case scenario for CBS happens and "Men" doesn't come back at all?
Yes, the network would probably suffer some in the ratings -- but it would probably also come out Ok. CBS also has the No. 2 and 3 comedies in terms of viewers in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly"; both shows are also in the Top 25 this...

Exclusive: Yet more proof that family comedy, especially one with a male point of view, is the hottest half-hour genre this buying season: shortly after CBS shelled out a put pilot commitment to a suburban dad comedy from writer Peter Knight and Happy Madison, a family comedy from writers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and 20th Century Fox TV landed at Fox. The project, which has a 24 and Big Day-type twist to it, centers on a headstrong patriarch who, determined to get some quality family time, embarks on a vacation with his extended family. Much like 24 and short-lived ABC comedy Big Day where each season chronicled the events that took place during the course of one day, each season of the Port/Wiseman comedy will take place during one summer vacation. Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is just one of those shows that wasn't meant to be. It didn't do too poorly during the brief time it was on air, but it didn't do well enough for its funders to keep the cash flow up (or so it is said).
Kröd Mändoon (Sean Maguire, who starred in the similarly spoofy Meet the Spartans) is the leader of a, uh, resistance, a motley crew of losers: Aneka (India de Beaufort), his sort-of girlfriend with an insatiable sexual appetite (that she tries to satiate with everyone but Kröd); Loquasto (Steve Speirs), his faithful pig-nosed-and-eared servant; Zezelryck (Kevin Hart), a wannabe sorcerer; and Bruce (Marques Ray), the flamboyantly-gay lover of the gang's beloved General Arcadius. Together they must fight Chancellor Donold David Dongalor (Matt Lucas) and his loyal right-hand man Barnabus (Alex MacQueen).

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Do celebrities read what we write about them on AfterElton.com? – Eddy, Boise, ID
A: They do, they really, really do. The Flying Monkey spent the last two weeks at the Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles, the place where the networks roll out their new fall shows and showcase their acting talent, and I was pretty surprised by how many actors mentioned something they’d read on our site.
Kathy Griffin and the Monkey at this year's TCA
Now I’m not stupid: I know that some of this is plain old sucking-up on the part of the celebrity in an effort to get good press (although the concept of a celebrity sucking up to me is a little surreal).
But some of what the celebrities told me...

Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, a new series debuting this week on Comedy Central, might be set in a medieval time of wizards and warlords – but it has a very modern sensibility, and an equally modern sense of humor.
When Krod Mandoon, the title character and a self-proclaimed freedom fighter, is giving his band of companions “notes” after a particularly disappointing battle, the hapless wizard Zezelryck complains of a “hostile work environment.”
“We’re freedom fighters!” says an exasperated Krod. “All of our work environments are hostile!”
In short, Krod is part fantasy satire, and part office workplace comedy, but with a slightly different kind of office. And like the actual The Office, it even includes a gay character, Bruce (Marques Ray), who eventually ends up joining Krod’s band.

Comedy Central is moving into the fantasy arena, greenlighting a scripted live-action series dubbed Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.
In addition, the cable network has ordered pilots or presentations of projects starring a range of talent, including an animated comedy with Snoop Dogg, a sketch show starring Andy Richter and a fake-magazine show featuring David Alan Grier.
Those are just a few of the projects on an extensive 2008-09 slate announced Wednesday by Lauren Corrao, president of original programming and development, who noted that "funny always comes first" when putting a slate together at the network.
"It really is about the comedy and the point of view, whether it's the on-air talent or the writer behind it," she said.
Corrao is hoping to pick up a total of four of five projects to series from the 2008-09 slate, which will include any other projects added in the coming months.
As for Krod Mandoon, that series marks the network's first fantasy-comedy series and first project to receive a series order off the slate. The show, set to premiere in first-quarter 2009, is described as a character-driven comedy that centers on reluctant hero Krod Mandoon, a sensitive, clueless freedom fighter who becomes the last great hope in a medieval struggle.
Krod Mandoon is written by Peter Knight, who executive produces with Keith Samples, Brad Johnson, Courtney Conte and Flody Juarez. The show has yet to be cast.
Corrao said the timing was right to add a fantasy-comedy to the network's schedule, which is set in historic times but will feature more contemporary dialogue.
"That script came to us as a spec, and we fell in love with the writer's voice," she said.
