Just as Gold Derby predicted, Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) has prevailed at the 2024 Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Earlier this awards season, the 58-year-old performer, who is perhaps best known for playing Marvel’s “Iron Man,” claimed victory at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards for his role as Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic about the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. This marks Downey’s first career Oscars win; he was previously nominated for “Chaplin” and “Tropic Thunder”.

The first reactions to “The Flash” are in. It’s been hyped as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made — by DC’s new executives, by David Zaslav, even by Tom Cruise — and is now being anointed by one of the first public audiences that watched it at CinemaCon.
The CinemaCon crowd that saw “The Flash” in the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace Tuesday night was quite literally screaming with excitement, with some press seemingly losing their minds at some of the film’s late reveals. The film is a crowd pleaser from start to finish, a multiverse and time travel movie in the vein of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and even classics like “Back to the Future.” Whether or not it’s actually the greatest superhero movie ever made will be debated once more critics get the chance to see it,...

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” made its long-awaited world premiere in Hollywood last night and critics were left both thrilled and disappointed by the much-touted final entry in the Skywalker saga. “The Rise of Skywalker” finds “The Force Awakens” helmer J.J. Abrams back in the director’s chair following Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi.” The latter film opened in 2017 to vast critical acclaim, but Johnson’s script earned a polarizing response from “Star Wars” fans for the way it upended conventions and side-stepped fan theories. It appears Abrams has course-corrected the franchise with “The Rise of Skywalker” in a way that critics are finding frustrating.
The New York Times carpetbagger Kyle Buchanan respond on Twitter to “The Rise of Skywalker” by writing, “[The film] could only have been ruder to Rian Johnson if they had motion-smoothed it.”

Following the Thanksgiving break, “A Star is Born” has widened its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars according to the predictions of the 30 Experts at Gold Derby by a vote of 19 to 3 (it was 18 to 5 last week). One “Roma” backer [Andrea Mandell (USA Today)] switched to “A Star is Born,” while another [Anne Thompson (Indiewire)] is now the lone vote for “Black Panther.”
“Green Book,” which did good business in its first weekend of wide release, now has the backing of five pundits (that’s up from just one at the beginning of the month). “The Favourite” and “Vice” have one Oscarologist apiece in their corner. [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]

Heading into Thanksgiving, “A Star is Born” maintains its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race according to the predictions of the 30 Oscar Experts at Gold Derby by a vote of 18 to 5. But watch out for “Green Book,” which now has the backing of five pundits (that’s up from just one at the beginning of the month). “The Favourite” and “Vice” have one Oscarologist apiece in their corner. While “A Star is Born” still has a clear edge for first-place votes from the experts, it is only just ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart. It leads with odds of 13/2 to take home the top Academy Award while the other two are just behind at 15/2. This discrepancy is down to the relative rankings of these three films by all of the experts, including those that don’t have them in first place. [See the latest racetrack odds.]

On Wednesday, July 18th, New Line Cinema brought a few of the upcoming horror films on their slate to the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con for the Second Annual ScareDiego celebration, giving attendees some insights to a trio of terror-filled cinematic treats, including Andy Muschietti’s It Chapter Two, Corin Hardy’s The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona from first-time feature filmmaker Michael Chaves. We also had the opportunity to hear from many of the creatives involved with The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, both in front of, and behind, the camera.
Hosted by Rotten Tomatoes’ always entertaining Grae Drake, the night kicked off with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the happenings on the set of It Chapter Two, where Muschietti promised us that he’s ready to scare the hell out of us with his sequel, and also showed us a few sketches of potential creature designs for the film.

After spending the last several years directing historical dramas (“The Post,” “Lincoln”) and family adventures (“The Bfg,” “Tintin”), Steven Spielberg triumphantly returns to the world of science-fiction blockbusters in “Ready Player One.” The buzz online has been incredibly skeptical in the weeks leading up to the film’s March 28 release date, with many people criticizing the movie’s nostalgia-bait marketing, but it looks like Spielberg and Warner Bros. have nothing to worry about.
“Ready Player One” world premiered at SXSW on March 11 and the first reviews and reactions are incredibly positive. IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn called the film an “astonishing science-fiction spectacle” in his B+ review, and he’s hardly the only critic blown away by Spielberg’s relentless virtual-reality adventure.
The film, based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, is set in a future where citizens escape from the real world by entering a virtual reality known as the Oasis.

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.

For most of the awards season “Jane,” which profiles primatologist Jane Goodall, was the Oscar front-runner for Best Documentary Feature — until of course the Oscar nominations were announced. “Jane” didn’t even end up with a bid, so now the race is wide open. But based on our latest predictions leading up to Oscar weekend the race will have an unusual outcome: “Faces Places” gets leading odds of 8/15 to win, which would give director Agnes Varda a competitive Oscar the same year she won an honorary Oscar.
It’s not uncommon for an artist to win both competitive and honorary Oscars in their career, and it’s not unprecedented to win a competitive Oscar after you’ve won your honorary award: for instance, actor Paul Newman and composer Ennio Morricone have pulled off that feat. But it’s unusual to receive both awards in the same Oscar season. The 89-year-old...

As final Oscar voting ended on Feb. 27, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” leapt ahead of “The Shape of Water” in the race for Best Picture. Martin McDonagh‘s character study now has the votes of 11 our 27 Oscar experts from major media outlets to win while Guillermo del Toro‘s fantasy has fallen back to nine. Those respective levels of support translate into odds of 17/10 versus 9/4.
But watch out for “Get Out,” which has six experts in its corner and competitive odds of 7/2. “Lady Bird” continues to have a single backer and odds of 20/1 to pull off an upset. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.)

When it comes to the writing categories at the Oscars, “Call Me by Your Name” scribe James Ivory should be doubly grateful to Andre Aciman for writing the novel his script is based on. Ivory’s writing has earned kudos from numerous critics and awards groups. But in addition, the fact that Ivory’s script is an adaptation allows him to avoid the gauntlet of Best Original Screenplay, where arguably the four biggest contenders for Best Picture are all in the running: “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Instead, “Call Me” vies for Best Adapted Screenplay where it’s the overwhelming front-runner with 1/10 odds.

With Oscar season winding down “Phantom Thread” continues to lead our predictions for Best Costume Design with odds of 2/9. That’s not exactly a surprise since the film is all about a fashion designer (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), which puts a strong emphasis on the film’s wardrobe. Or maybe it is a surprise since “Phantom Thread,” despite its fashion-forward storyline, actually lost the Costume Designers Guild Award for period films to “The Shape of Water.” But the film’s threads are designed by Mark Bridges, who previously won this category for “The Artist” (2011), so we know the academy is fond of his work. Does he have this race all sewn up?

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” just pulled into a tie for first place with longtime frontrunner “The Shape of Water” in the race for Best Picture. Of our 26 Oscar experts from major media outlets, each of these films now has 10 votes. “Get Out” still has five experts in its corner while “Lady Bird” has one backer. “Three Billboards” had the support of just five experts before it swept the Baftas on Feb. 18. Martin McDonagh‘s character study won both Best Picture and Best British Film, two acting awards (Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell) and original screenplay.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” got a big boost in the race for Best Picture at the Oscars following its five wins at the Baftas last Sunday (Feb. 18). “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday (Feb. 18), winning five awards including Best Picture. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. However, exactly half of our two dozen experts are still backing the Best Picture bid by “The Shape of Water.” Those votes give it leading odds of 6/5. Guillermo del Toro won Best Director at BAFTA and his fantasy film picked up two other prizes (production design, score) there as well.

“Darkest Hour” is the overwhelming Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling thanks in large part to the prosthetics used to transform lead actor Gary Oldman into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This award has gone to a number of films that recreate historical figures over the years, but the motion picture academy has been especially fond of British icons.
Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison and Lois Burwell won for “Braveheart” (1995), about 13th century Scottish warrior William Wallace. But Wallace was actually fighting to free Scotland from English rule, so perhaps we should leave that one out. But just a few years later Jenny Shircore prevailed for “Elizabeth” (1998), which transformed Cate Blanchett into Queen Elizabeth I during the early years of her reign. And one year after that Christine Blundell and Trefor Proud prevailed for Mike Leigh‘s biopic “Topsy-Turvy” (1999), about the British operatic duo of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Go ahead and stitch engrave the Best Costume Design Oscar for “Phantom Thread” now. Paul Thomas Anderson’s sartorial drama is the 2/9-odd favorite to take home the award, according to our latest predictions. It’s out front against “Beauty and the Beast” (15/2 odds), “The Shape of Water” (25/1 odds), “Darkest Hour” (66/1 odds) and Victoria and Abdul (66/1 odds).
If “Phantom Thread” were to only convert one of its six nominations into a win, it makes complete sense it’d be this one. The movie is about a persnickety high-end fashion designer in 1950s London and it’s filled frame to frame with Reynolds Woodcock’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) breathtakingly posh, gorgeous gowns, created Oscar winner Mark Bridges (2011’s “The Artist”). Documentarian Matthew Heineman is the front-runner to win his second Directors Guild Award in three years thanks to his tense film “City of Ghosts.” That’s according to the combined predictions of more than 1,200 users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby in advance of the DGA ceremony on Saturday night, February 3. But for Heineman to win again he’ll have to get past a few legendary filmmakers: Steve James (“Abacus: Small Enough to Jail”), Errol Morris (“Wormwood”) and Ken Burns (“The Vietnam War”).
Heineman previously won Best Documentary Director for “Cartel Land” (2015), in which he explored the tension between drug cartels, Mexican groups fighting back against cartel violence and border patrol agents monitoring the crossing between Mexico and the United States. Heineman’s latest film is also about a group resisting violence in their homeland: “City of Ghosts” profiles the Syrian citizen journalists who make up the group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” has dominated the awards season. After winning the Emmy for Best Drama Series last fall it won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and Producers Guild Awards. So can “Game of Thrones” finally get in the game at the Directors Guild Awards? “Handmaid’s” is out front here too, but “Thrones” has three nominations for Best TV Drama Directing, and one of those episodes in particular, “The Spoils of War,” could burn its rivals to the ground.
Reed Morano won the Emmy for Best Drama Directing for the “Handmaid’s Tale” pilot. Now she’s the DGA front-runner with leading odds of 2/7. Those odds are based on the combined forecasts of more than 1,100 users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far. That includes 10 Expert journalists we’ve polled for their predictions, 9 of whom are betting on Morano to prevail here: Erik Davis (Fandango), Edward Douglas,...

Two of the most recent Oscar-winning duos for Best Song are back to face off at the 2018 Academy Awards: “Coco’s” Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez who won for “Frozen” (2013), and “The Greatest Showman’s” Benj Pasek & Justin Paul who prevailed for “La La Land” (2016). “Coco” is nominated for the emotional tune “Remember Me,” while “The Greatest Showman” is up for its empowerment song “This Is Me.” Both duos top our Oscar predictions for Best Song, however our experts from major media outlets warn to watch out for “Mudbound” double nominee Mary J. Blige.
Blige, who also contends as Best Supporting Actress for the Netflix drama, made history by being the first person to earn Oscar nominations for acting and songwriting in the same year. Her song “Mighty River,” co-written by Raphael Saadiq & Taura Stinson, also earned a Golden Globe nomination, but lost out to Pasek and Paul. The other two...

After failing to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011) and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), it looks like the third time will be the charm for 20th Century Fox’s “Apes” reboot. According to Gold Derby’s official Oscar predictions, “War for the Planet of the Apes” is in the lead with 8/11 odds to win that damn dirty Oscar on March 4. It faces off against “Blade Runner 2049,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Kong: Skull Island” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at the 2018 Oscars.
As awards watchers know, “Hugo” surprised by beating “Rise” in the visual effects race back in 2011, while “Dawn” lost to “Interstellar” in 2014. Director Matt Reeves‘ “War,” which chronicles the battle for Earth between the apes and the humans, is the third reboot of the original “Planet of the Apes” series of films from the 1960s and 1970s.
