“It was a big pay cut to do essentially the same job,” Mayne tells The Athletic
Following Monday’s news that Kenny Mayne is ending his celebrated 27-year tenure at ESPN, the on-air personality said he left the company after the two could not agree on a new contract. In an interview published Wednesday, Mayne said he was asked to take a “significant” pay cut to do what he described as the same job.
“It was a significant pay cut. It was a big pay cut to do essentially the same job,” Mayne told The Athletic. “It was a 14% reduction in time worked and a 61% reduction in money earned. I thought the variance was too much.” ESPN declined to comment on the figures.
“It was still a good amount of money in the real world. I’m not trying to frame this as woe for me. Nothing like that. I...

Mayne was one of the network’s longest-serving on-air personalities
Kenny Mayne is leaving ESPN after 27 years. The former “SportsCenter” host and longtime on-air personality described his departure as a “salary cap casualty.”
“I am leaving ESPN. Salary cap casualty. Thanks for the opportunity Vince Doria & Al Jaffe & for taking my solicitations,” Mayne wrote on Twitter Monday. “I will miss the people. I will miss the vending machine set up over by the old Van Pelt joint. We had everything.”
An individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap Mayne was offered a deal to remain with the network, but declined. ESPN had no comment.
Mayne first joined ESPN in 1994 and was one of the main “SportsCenter” anchors, before moving on to doing more esoteric and offbeat features. He had returned to anchoring the 11 p.m. Et version of “SportsCenter” sporadically in recent years.

One of ESPN’s longtime faces is leaving the network. Trey Wingo, who hosted “SportsCenter” and the network’s NFL Draft coverage over a two-decade tenure, is exiting the network after his contract was not renewed.
The decision not to re-up Wingo’s contract came as part of ESPN’s massive job cuts, the New York Post reported earlier this month (the NY Post also reported back in September that Wingo was being let go). The host’s departure was not confirmed until today, which is also his last day at the network.
“I can barely remember a day which didn’t involve working side by side with this guy. @wingoz has been an incredible teammate & friend for more than 2 decades. Mike Greenberg must move fast as the host of ESPN’s “Get Up” each weekday morning. He’s hoping a new radio gig in the afternoons will give him the chance he needs to slow things down.
“On the TV show, we are just flying through stuff. The average interview on my show in the morning is – a long interview for us is six or seven minutes. On the radio, I could see us doing 15, 16, 17 minutes when the circumstances call for it,” says Greenberg, in an interview that is just a little longer than the time he wants for radio sessions. “It’s not every day that you have the right opportunities and the right subject matter to do that.”

ESPN said it would cancel its flagship morning radio program, “Golic & WIngo,” while bringing Mike Greenberg, half of the team that helped the Disney sports-media giant carve a bigger business in the audio world, back to the medium as part of a reworking of its national lineup.
Greenberg, who spent 17 years with co-host Mike Golic on the morning radio program “Mike & Mike,” will keep his duties on the ESPN mid-morning TV program, “Get Up,” which he has helped anchor since the Spring of 2018. But he will also lead a new two-hour radio show that airs between noon and 2 p.m. weekdays. His former partner, Mike Golic will leave mornings along with Trey Wingo. The 2019 NFL Draft smashed records in both attendance and ratings last week, as a total 600,000 people attended the three-day event in Nashville, Tennessee, and an average 6.1 million viewers watched across linear television and digital platforms, according to Nielsen.
Meanwhile, ABC scored a primetime touchdown with its coverage of Day 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft on Thursday night, rising 26% in total viewers compared to the first night of last year’s broadcast on Fox.
For those who had doubted that the Music City could pull off football’s second-biggest event after the Super Bowl with such huge success, don’t feel bad — you weren’t alone.

Madison Avenue can’t place ads in NFL TV broadcasts in the off-season – there aren’t any – so it’s doing the next best thing.
Disney says ad slots for its coverage of the NFL Draft, slated to air Thursday, Friday and Saturday on both ABC and ESPN, sold out about a week ago. Football can be “a year-round type of product,” says Jim Minnich, vice president of revenue and yield management for sports at Disney Advertising Sales, in an interview. He cites the recent NFL season, in which ratings moved back up after two years of declines, as a factor in interest in the event.
The NFL Draft isn’t the Super Bowl by any means, but it brings in substantial viewership. The NFL last year said a broadcast of the Draft across ESPN, Fox and the NFL Network over three days nabbed an average of 5.5 million viewers at...

ESPN used its Thursday-night coverage of the NFL Draft to shine a light on an unorthodox candidate for gridiron stardom: the Bud Knight.
In a cutaway that looked more like a quick-hit player profile, ESPN ran what is known as a “two-box”or “double-box” screen that was really a commercial from Anheuser-Busch InBev. Host Trey Wingo told viewers his team of analysts would return after “a look at one of the most promising talents in this year’s draft class – from Bud Light.”
Viewers got all that and more. One box showed the Bud Knight, who made its first appearance during Bud Light Super Bowl ads earlier this year, trying on hats from the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. The other offered facts and stats on his faux college-football career. Did you know the character hails from Ye Olde University? Slayed five dragons this week? And “cuts through defenses...

How many “Princess Bride” quotes can you put into a 30-minute show (plus commercials)? A lot, as it turns out. But who would have thunk that it would show up on … Espn’s NFL Kick Off show? Inconceivable! But that’s what the show’s co-hosts Mark Schlereth, Trey Wingo and Teddy Bruschi did this weekend, tossing in as many “Princess Bride” quotes and references as they could in the 30-minute show. Not all of the references work, of course, but if you’re a fan of the Rob Reiner movie (based on a script by William Goldman, who adapted the story from his own book of the same name), there’s no denying that either the three co-hosts made a concerted effort to throw a shout-out to the movie, or whoever wrote the episode’s script is a big fan and slipped it in without them knowing. Though upon its initial release Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride was only a modest box office success, the 1987 feature that blended fantasy, romance, adventure and comedy has become an unadulterated cult hit. In the '90s a slumber party wasn't complete without a VHS copy of the beloved tale of Westley and Buttercup, and today you can and will be roundly scorned by friends for not recognizing it's many, many quotable lines should they roll into conversation, which is inevitable. Still, it was a pleasant surprise to find that Espn's NFL Kickoff hosts Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, and Tedy Bruschi can be counted among the ardent fans of Princess Bride, as they showed in force on Sunday night's show. Over the course of a half hour, the trio dropped such notable quotables as "Life is pain; anyone who says differently is selling something," and "it's not his fault he's...

Trey Wingo, Mark Sclereth and Tedy Bruschi are the hosts/analysts of Espn's NFL Kick Off, and they live and breathe football. But being professional jocks doesn't mean they can't also appreciate grand romance and adventure. They're apparently huge fans of The Princess Bride, and the trio recently filled their show with as many references to Rob Reiner's classic film as possible. Whether you know the first thing about football or not, the result is fantastic. Microsoft grabbed attention at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this week before the event even began. Their Sunday presentation featuring Cirque du Soleil confirmed Project Natal's official name as Kinect. Then, the global media briefing on Monday (June 14) unveiled Microsoft's new motion controller's full range of media capabilities, as well as an Xbox Live partnership with Espn, an exclusive "Call of Duty" agreement and demos for new games including "Halo: Reach" and an unnamed "Star Wars" title for Kinect, which will launch in the U.S. on November 4.
"A decade ago, we unveiled Xbox to the world, and this year, our 10th year, is the biggest year in Xbox history," Don Mattrick, Microsoft senior vice president of entertainment, proclaimed at the event.

We thoroughly enjoyed "The View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck on her turn on "NFL Live" Tuesday (Jan. 19).
We realize the men of Espn's "NFL Live," Trey Wingo and Tedy Bruschi, were not exactly pelting Hasselbeck with tough analysis questions, but they weren't just lobbing her softballs either.
Some highlights include when Hasselbeck was asked to weigh in on new Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey and the fact that his job was a tough one to fill. Hasselbeck remarked:
In this economy, if a job been open that long, you gotta wonder about the job. Every single person [approached to be] on that staff is going to be having this conversation with their wife and family, "Hey, we're going to a team. It's in a really tough division. We're going to play the Patriots twice. We're going to see Miami twice. They don't have a really good market and the weather's kinda bad. What...
