Prakazrel “Pras” Michel has entered a motion for a new trial, claiming that his lawyer blew the closing arguments at the original hearing by relying too much on artificial intelligence to craft his final pitch.
Michel called AI “experimental” and said the program’s use resulted in a number of errors by an “unqualified, unprepared, and ineffectual” trial attorney.
Michel was convicted in April on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. He faces up to 20 years in prison on the top counts.
He was accused of funneling money from a Malaysian financer through straw donors to Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, then trying to stop a Justice Department investigation and influence an extradition case on behalf of China under the Trump administration.
His trial included testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Michel is free pending sentencing...

Fugees’ Pras Michel is seeking a new trial in his federal conspiracy case, claiming that his former attorney is responsible for “ineffective representation,” which included using an AI program to write his closing argument.
The motion for a new trial was filed by Michel’s new legal team on Monday, October 16th. Among the allegations put forth by the motion against Michel’s previous lawyer, David Kenner, is a claim that Kenner “used an experimental artificial intelligence (AI) program to draft the closing argument, ignoring the best arguments and conflating the charged schemes, and he then publicly boasted that the AI program ‘turned hours or days of legal work into seconds’” (per Rolling Stone).
Further, the motion alleges that Kenner had “an undisclosed financial stake” in the AI program, and the usage of the program for Michel’s trial was done “so they could issue a press release afterward promoting...

The arrest of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, a former Southside Crips gang leader, in the murder of Tupac Shakur on Sept. 29, over 27 years after the legendary rapper’s killing in Las Vegas, sent shockwaves across the world. For over a decade, Keefe D had confessed that he’d ordered the murder, was in the car that pulled up next to the BMW carrying Tupac, and that his nephew Orlando Anderson, a fellow Crip who’d gotten into a scrap with Tupac hours earlier at the MGM Grand Hotel, had fired...

Since the arrest and indictment of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, people have speculated about whether the Los Angeles Police Department will be reinvigorated to pursue an investigation into the other great tragedy of that era in hip-hop — the 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. But former LAPD detective Greg Kading, who was the lead detective of an interagency task force created in 2006 to investigate Biggie’s murder, tells Rolling Stone that he feels the murder was likely the result of a smaller conspiracy that would...

The Death Row Records co-founder gave his reaction to the recent arrest in an interview with TMZ from California state prison, saying he wouldn’t take the stand if called upon to testify. All eyez are back on Tupac Shakur, whose 1996 murder may be closer than ever to being solved. The same month that marks the 27th anniversary of Shakur’s murder, police have arrested a key figure who was present at the Las Vegas shooting. The exact charges have yet to be released by police.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Las Vegas police arrested 60-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a member of the South Side Compton Crips (and that ain’t a rap group). Davis has been long tied to Tupac Shakur’s murder, with one book by a former LAPD detective alleging that Davis was paid off by Sean “Diddy” Combs to pull the trigger. The report notes that the series will delve “even deeper into his infamous timeline than anything the public already knows.” The label’s founder Suge Knight and his brother, Brian Brown, are working on the project together.
Two years ago, Knight struck a deal with producer Steve Whitney and Tsw films to sign over his life rights for the potential project. At the time,...

It’s been said that revenge is a dish best served cold, and that was proven in Chris Rock’s latest standup comedy special for Netflix, “Selective Outrage”.
Not only did “Selective Outrage” mark Netflix’s first-ever live global special, it was also the first time that Rock has publicly weighed in on being slapped across the face by Will Smith during the 2022 Oscars, and the comedian did not hold back.
“I’m going to try to do the show without offending anyone. Because you never know who might get triggered,” Chris said early in the show (via Variety), seemingly in reference to Smith.

Later, he addressed the elephant in the room. “You know what people say, they say, ‘words hurt,’” he joked. “Anybody that say words hurt has never been punched in the face.

Grammy-winning rapper and producer Dr. Dre has been in the music game for over three decades. Throughout that time, he’s solidified his spot in hip-hop history as a rapper, producer, and record executive, working with artists from Eminem and 50 Cent to Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys. But before the global fame, he was a young person with big dreams growing up in southern California.

Dr. Dre grew up in Compton, California at a time when more and more hip-hop artists began emerging on the scene and exploring the fledgling music genre.
Dre first started performing with a group called the World Class Wreckin’ Cru in 1985. Among the group’s members were DJ Yella, whom Dre would later recruit for a new group called N.W.

“Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over” has its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.
In the era of the “authorized documentary,” whereby filmmakers get access to a living legend in exchange for a film that’s going to be almost unfailingly glowing, it’s incumbent upon documentarians to find some element of interest to take the place of scandal, criticism or provocation.
Thankfully, the makers of “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over” have such a fascinating subject — and who gives interviews that are equal parts warm, self-deprecating, no-nonsense and unapologetic — that the movie almost never feels like a greatest-hits informercial. Warwick is one of the all-time great vocalists, yes, but she actively intersected her career with the world outside of show business, from the civil rights movement to the early years of the AIDS epidemic.

Snoop Dogg has revealed that Dionne Warwick once “scared” him after calling him out for his lyrics.
The interaction occurred in the 1990s when the rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, first found success in the music industry.
“Walk on By” singer Warwick was not impressed with Snoop Dogg’s decision to use misogynistic slurs in his songs and, in a new documentary, revealed she set up a meeting to dress the rappers down.
In CNN’s Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over, Warwick, 82, and Snoop Dogg, 51, recalled the meeting, with the latter saying: “We were kind of, like, scared and shook up.”
The rapper said that he and his fellow rap stars, including Tupac and Death Row Records founder Suge Knight, showed up almost 10 minutes early as they feared arriving too late.
“We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever,” Snoop Dogg continued.

Snoop Dogg reveals Dionne Warwick took him and Tupac to task over their lyrics.
The rapper recounted an intervention the singer staged where she called over Tupac, Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight, and himself to her place during CNN’s “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over” documentary.
The trio were so intimidated by her, they arrived at 7a.m. She had demanded they called her a “b–ch” to her face.

East and west clash in Rheingold, the latest feature from Fatih Akin, which takes him back to the streets of urban Germany after 2019’s controversial serial-killer drama The Golden Glove. This too, though, is a biopic of sorts, with a similarly notorious subject matter: Kurdish rapper, record label boss and sometime jailbird Giwar Hajabi, Aka Xatar.
Born in a bat-infested cave under heavy bombing during the Iran-Iraq war, Hajabi — still only 40 — has had an interesting life, to put it mildly. One suspects this often warts-and-all portrait is simply the tip of a very dark iceberg (the eye-popping extent of Hajabi’s drug-dealing career is only glimpsed in a brief montage), but a charismatic, even vulnerable performance by star Emilio Sakraya is enough to keep us onside.
The start is bold, with a would-be epic set-up that it can’t quite deliver on: Hajabi and his three accomplices are delivered to a prison in Syria,...

Hollywood Homicide came along during a lean time in Harrison Ford’s career. While What Lies Beneath had been a hit, the solo star vehicles the icon chose, including Random Hearts and K-19: The Widowmaker, were not connecting with audiences. On the page, Hollywood Homicide seemed promising. It was directed by Ron Shelton, the director behind such hits as Bull Durham and Tin Cup, and it would put Ford in the buddy cop genre. Most importantly, his on-screen partner would be an up-and-coming star in his own right, Josh Hartnett, who was coming off Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down.
The premise was interesting because it focused on moonlighting Hollywood cops, with Ford playing a full-time cop and part-time realtor, while Hartnett is a cop/ wannabe actor. The baddie they would go after in this would be based on Death Row Records founder Suge Knight.

Comedian Chris Rock has tagged Hollywood star Will Smith’s online apology for slapping him at the Oscars as “hostage video”.
The 57-year-old comic made the statement during another of his stand-up sets alongside Dave Chappelle as part of the pair’s new joint comedy tour, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Referring to 53-year-old Smith’s apology video released in July, Chris said, “F*** your hostage video”.
The comic also used the set to refer to Will as “Suge Smith”, in reference to the thuggish and imprisoned Death Row Records executive Suge Knight.
Rock told fans, who attended his and Dave’s performance at Liverpool’s M and S Arena, Will had managed to do an impersonation of a “perfect man for 30 years” before showing he is “just as ugly as the rest of us”.
This is the first time the comic had extensively shared his feelings about being slapped by Will at this year’s Oscars.

Chris Rock continues to eviscerate Will Smith for his attempts at damage control after slapping the comedian onstage during the Oscars.
Rock and fellow standup comic Dave Chappelle are in the midst of their joint European tour, where Rock has been taking the opportunity to chime in on Smith.

Rock also told the audience that the slap was painful.

London’s O2 Arena was rocking Saturday evening as Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock continued their European stand-up tour, including new commentary on their assaults on stage. We were in the crowd.
Rock, who took the stage first, dedicated a small portion of his lengthy set to talking about Will Smith, during which he said, “f*ck your hostage video,” in an apparent response to the actor’s viral YouTube apology video. Smith posted the apology on YouTube in July. This is the first time Rock has directly addressed the video in public.
As in previous sets, the comedian noted the stinging effect of Smith’s slap: “Yes that sh*t hurt. He played Ali. I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather.”
Rock again referred to Will Smith as “Suge Smith” in reference to the former Death Row Records music executive Suge Knight who is currently serving a 28-year jail sentence for voluntary manslaughter.

Jurors declared themselves “deadlocked” Friday at the California civil trial over whether Suge Knight should be held liable – and pay millions in damages – for killing married Compton dad Terry Carter with his Ford Raptor truck seven years ago amid a parking lot dispute with another man linked to the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.
The jurors told the judge their vote was split seven-to-five without confirming which way they were leaning. They need nine votes out of 12 for a verdict in the wrongful death case centered on claims of negligence and battery.

He also cofounded Death Row Records with Dre and Suge Knight, and he mentored a young Snoop Dogg on the ins and outs of songcraft when the young rapper only knew how to freestyle. Few have loomed so large and for so long over the entertainment industry as famously autocratic late billionaire Sumner Redstone, who passed last year at 97 years old after years of illness and isolation, not to mention rampant rumors of incapacitation and bitter infighting among his family and a couple of his significantly younger former girlfriends and care takers.

Bryan Singer has had a ruinous week. On December 4, 20th Century Fox fired Singer from the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” for abandoning the London set; on December 6, the studio announced Dexter Fletcher as his replacement. In a statement, Singer ascribed his absence on “Bohemian Rhapsody” to caring for an ailing parent, but Fox also declined to renew its long-term deal with Singer’s production company, while his longtime publicist cut ties a few months ago.

And then, on December 7, Singer hit the news cycle again: In a lawsuit filed by attorney Jeff Herman, Cesar Sanchez-Guzman accused Singer of sexually assaulting him in 2003, when Sanchez-Guzman was 17.
All of this represents a tremendous comedown for Singer, a blockbuster director whose films have made over $1 billion in domestic release alone.
