NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” has spent nearly half a century making fun of advertisers and Madison Avenue pitches. A few big marketers want to help the show continue.
Allstate, L’Oreal Groupe, T-Mobile, and Volkswagen of America have signed up to serve as presenting sponsors of the next season of the NBC late-night mainstay, which which will be the series’ 50th. The four marketers will sponsor the show all season, which will include a live, three-hour primetime special on Sunday, February 16.
Under terms of the deals, according to a person familiar with the matter, each advertiser is expected to participate in bespoke promotions that could include social-media takeovers or endeavors tied to “SNL” talent. These efforts could surface in a wide variety of elements under NBCUniversal’s overall portfolio. Already, the “SNL” anniversary is expected to get some spotlight during the company’s telecast of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There's still a lot of buzz surrounding Richard Gadd's Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer. The comedian and screenwriter translated the personal traumatic experience of a stalking victim into the format of a dramatic thriller with elements of comedy and true crime.
The phenomenal success of the series has been going on for a month now, and the real events are becoming overgrown with details and speculation.
If you are looking for something no less intense and at the same time based on real events, then these movies and TV series are for you.

The investigative journalism we see on TV is completely true — except for the parts that are completely made up. But how can we tell what’s real and what’s fabricated? Inventing Anna, the new Shondaland series on Netflix about Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), the Russian-born faux heiress who elegantly finessed banks, hotels and socialites out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, gives viewers lots of opportunities to ask this question. Based on Jessica Pressler’s 2018 New York magazine feature on Delvey, Inventing Anna closely follows reporter Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), a fictionalized version of Pressler, as she attempts to connect Delvey’s dots — and make her deadline.
Inventing Anna is as much Vivian’s story as it is Anna’s — in certain respects, they’re both doing the titular inventing. Vivian’s obsession with telling Anna’s story isn’t totally selfless; she’s trying to redeem herself from a recent career setback,...

Money may talk, but real wealth whispers. And Anna Delvey’s constant name-drops? Those are more like screams into the void. In the new Shondaland drama Inventing Anna, Delvey — masterfully played by Julia Garner — is constantly mentioning famous people, places and, of course, fashion labels in the most ostentatious way possible. While her actual bank balance is a well-kept secret, Delvey makes sure the world knows that her parties are populated with real estate moguls and world-renowned artists, that she’s been to all the hottest new restaurants and that she only gets the most expensive designer pieces as gifts for her friends. In fact, Anna drops so many names, it’s hard not to trip — and to wonder just who all these people actually are.
To help you keep up with Anna and her inner circle, we’ve put together a comprehensive, chronological glossary of all these famous (and...

If Julia Garner’s accent in Inventing Anna sounds unusual to you — you’re not alone.
In the upcoming Shondaland Netflix series, the Ozark alum stars as the titular Anna Delvey, a charismatic entrepreneur or con artist (depending on who you ask) who convinces many of New York’s power players that she was a German heiress worthy of their financial support... to the tune of millions of dollars. Delvey’s accent — a hodgepodge of Russian, German and American inflections — is as complicated and muddled as her past.
“People are like, ‘This accent is crazy. Is this what she sounds like?’ They can't believe it,” Garner tells Tudum. “But at the same time, I want everybody to just Google how she sounds. I wouldn't allow myself to just go on screen and do a half accent. I’m a perfectionist.”
Garner says nailing Delvey's accent is the key to nailing the character.

A defamation lawsuit against Netflix over its miniseries Inventing Anna — about the “Soho grifter” Anna Delvey, a.k.a. Anna Sorokin — is set to go to trial after a judge rejected the streaming service’s bid to dismiss the case.

A former friend of con artist Anna Sorokin was allowed on Tuesday to proceed with a defamation lawsuit against Netflix over the Shonda Rhimes miniseries, “Inventing Anna.”
Netflix had argued that Rhimes and the other show creators have a “literary license” to give their interpretation of events. In rejecting that argument, Chief Judge Colm F. Connolly found that at least some of the characterizations in the show could cross the line into defamation.
The plaintiff, Rachel DeLoache Williams, was depicted as abandoning Sorokin in Morocco and ultimately betraying her to the authorities. Williams has claimed that 16 separate sets of statements in the series falsely portray her as “snobbish,” “unethical” and “greedy.”
Sorokin pretended to be a German heiress by the name of Anna Delvey. She was ultimately convicted of cheating banks and other businesses out of about $200,000, and served nearly four years in custody. She is now on house arrest while she fights deportation.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.

Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos may have been expelled from the House of Representatives on Dec. 1 by a vote of 311-114 — but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story for the alleged serial grifter and sometimes drag queen from New York. HBO Films has already optioned The Fabulist, a book about Santos’ rise and fall, for adaptation, with Frank Rich and Mike Makowsky (HBO’s Bad Education) attached to executive produce and Makowsky set to write. As for Santos, public opinion seems to think he’ll find a future on Dancing with the Stars — so much so that the show trended on X alongside news of his historic expulsion.
Asked if he would consider competing on the show that has featured the likes of Sean Spicer and House majority leader Tom DeLay (indicted on charges of conspiring to violate political fundraising law), Santos told reporters, “Today, I...

Anna Delvey, who falsely claimed she was a wealthy German heiress and scammed approximately $275,000 from donors, is being sued by ex-lawyer, Audrey Thomas, for unpaid legal fees of over $150,000.
Delvey’s story inspired the Netflix series, Inventing Anna.
The suit comes just as the 32-year-old has launched her new podcast, The Anna Delvey Show. The first two guests were comedian Whitney Cummings and rock star Julia Cumming.
Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, started posing as a German heiress after she settled down in the Big Apple in 2013.
She bounced around different hotels, ignoring the bills, defrauding wealthy socialites and duping multiple banks.
It was not until October 2017 that Sorokin was finally arrested during a sting operation and was found guilty of eight charges in 2019. She was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison, fined $24,000 and ordered to pay restitution of about $199,000. The court has estimated that she has stolen around $275,000 throughout the years.

Amid Anna Sorokin‘s house arrest in a New York apartment building that has been condemned as imminently perilous to life, she’s attempting to capture outside attention and relieving her boredom in the most quotidian way: starting a podcast.
“So many people became famous for bad things and were able to kind of segue it into something different,” she recently told The Associated Press in her East Village apartment.
“The main theme of my podcast is productive rule-breaking,” she said of “The Anna Delvey Show”.
For now, she wants to reimagine her public image to shake her reputation of being a con artist and a scammer.
“I’m on 24/7 house arrest. I’m only allowed to leave for my parole check-ins, my Ice check-ins and for medical emergencies,” she said. Behind her is a life-size cutout of her likeness — created by artist Kenny Schachter — which, like Sorokin herself, is wearing an ankle monitoring device.
“So many people became famous for bad things and were able to kind of segue it into something different,” she recently told The Associated Press in her East Village apartment.
“The main theme of my podcast is productive rule-breaking,” she said of “The Anna Delvey Show”.

Faux heiress Anna Delvey reportedly owes her disbarred lawyer, Audrey A. Thomas, more than $152,000 in legal fees.
In addition to the large amount owed, the former con artist, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, made false allegations against her former attorney in an attempt not to pay, according to a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit, reported by the New York Post.
In 2019, Delvey was convicted of eight felony charges for pretending to be a German heiress who scammed $200,000 from New York City socialites. She then hired Thomas to represent her in 2020.

The Netflix limited series Inventing Anna follows the intriguing story of Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey), a high-society con artist who successfully scams wealthy New Yorkers out of their fortunes. Emmy award-winning actor Julia Garner, who captured the essence of the fraudulent debutante, was in good company on the set of the successful series.
Six-time Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky portrayed investigative journalist Vivian Kent, who was responsible for unraveling the scam. While the character was based on a real-life reporter, the My Girl star made the role her own, pulling from her personal experiences when she worked as a journalist.

Most of us like to cheer for the underdog or the sweetheart. But those characters wouldn’t be the favorites in their stories without the villains they face. But what happens in a plot where all of the cast is cut from the same twisted cloth? If rumors are to be trusted, that’s the premise of an upcoming new reality TV show from E! called House of Villains.
The series will put all of the biggest villains from across the unscripted universe on a collision course. The most cunning, sly — and dare we say unlikeable — cast members from franchises like Real Housewives, The Challenge, and The Bachelor will compete against one another to crown an ultimate villain hero. And, it might all be hosted by a real-life conwoman.

Netflix was sued on Wednesday over “No Limit,” a fictionalized film that suggests a free diver deliberately killed his wife in a diving incident.
The French-language film is based on the true story of Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras and his wife, Audrey Mestre. They were a celebrity couple within the world of free diving, an extreme sport in which divers descend hundreds of feet without oxygen.
Mestre drowned while attempting a dive in the Dominican Republic in 2002, after the device that was supposed to carry her to the surface malfunctioned.
The film tells the story of “Pascal Gautier” and “Roxana Aubrey,” a fictionalized version of the couple. Gautier is depicted as abusive and jealous of Aubrey’s success. In the climactic scene, the film strongly implies that Gautier sabotaged her compressed air tank, leaving it without enough air to bring her to the surface.

Jax Taylor stirred up a lot of drama during his eight seasons on Vanderpump Rules.
The Bravo reality show began in 2013 and centered around friends working at Lisa Vanderpump’s Los Angeles restaurant, Sur.
Bartender Jax was an original cast member along with Tom Sandoval, Stassi Schroeder, Scheana Shay, Katie Maloney, and Kristen Doute.

Jax and Brittany both left the show in 2020.
Why was Jax Taylor fired from ‘Vanderpump Rules’?

On “Inventing Anna,” Anna “Delvey” Sorokin has no time for her boyfriend Chase (Saamer Usmani), but Irl, Screen Actors Guild Award voters definitely had time for Julia Garner. The 29-year-old performer received a whopping three nominations from the guild this year, including one for her portrayal of Sorokin on the Netflix true-crime drama in the limited series/TV movie actress category. Should the now seven-time nominee triumph for the uber-memeified zeitgeist hit, she would take home her very first statuette.

Actress Julia Garner, who nearly gave up acting, eventually shot to stardom with Netflix drama series ‘Ozark’ and went on to achieve critical acclaim for her role as disgraced socialite Anna Delvey in ‘Inventing Anna’. She admitted that she had a “tough” few years in her early twenties when she was considered “too old” for the business.

Banshees also landed nods for best actor in a leading role (Colin Farrell), best supporting actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan) and best supporting actress (Kerry Condon).
Everything Everywhere also landed nods for best actress (Michelle Yeoh), best supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), best supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu).
The Fabelmans also scored a best supporting actor nod for Paul Dano. The Whale, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Woman King landed two nominations each, but one of the nods for the Black Panther sequel and The Woman King was in the stunt ensemble performance category.

With the number of scripted shows premiering in 2022 approaching 600, it’s no wonder that your friendly neighborhood THR TV critics have done Top 10 lists — Daniel Fienberg’s Top 10 and Angie Han’s Top 10 — with an additional 10 honorably mentioned shows apiece, plus a list of great episodes from shows that didn’t make either of our Top 10 lists. But we still have tons of TV that we want to honor as we near 2022. Well, honor and also “honor.” They can’t all be winners.
Welcome to our TV superlatives of 2022.
Most TV: Stranger Things
One could make the argument that previous seasons of Stranger Things had more humor or heart, but nobody can say that the fourth season shortchanged viewers on, well … running time? The nine-episode run, notable for introducing young viewers to Metallica and Kate Bush, started off with episodes of over 70 minutes,...

Julia Garner is the only actor this year with two Golden Globe nominations, having gotten in for her three-time Emmy-winning turn on “Ozark” and her Emmy-nominated performance on “Inventing Anna.” She wouldn’t be the first person to win two Globes in one night, but she would be the first to win both for TV.
Four performers — all women — have taken home bookend Globes in the same ceremony: Sigourney Weaver (“Working Girl”; “Gorillas in the Mist,” 1988), Joan Plowright (“Enchanted April,” 1991; “Stalin”), Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” 2006; “Elizabeth I”) and Kate Winslet (“The Reader”; “Revolutionary Road,” 2008). Weaver’s and Winslet’s victories were in film, while Plowright’s and Mirren’s pairs were across film and TV.

Critics Choice Awards nominations reactions: Cheers for ‘Rrr’ love, jeers for ‘The Woman King’ snubs
Right after the nominees were announced for the 2023 Critics Choice Awards, our forum posters let loose with their opinions about whose work was recognized and whose was snubbed. In particular, folks celebrated the strong showings by “Rrr” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” rolled their eyes at the limited display of love for “Women Talking” and “The Woman King.” Some saw this year’s lineups as basic and complained about certain inclusions, while others cheered the redemption of a few performers who have failed to garner much attention from regional critics groups.
Below is just a sampling of our readers’ brutally honest Critics Choice Awards reactions regarding the nominees in many of the film categories. Take a look, then join in if you’re brave enough. The winners in both film and TV will be handed out January 15 during a live CW telecast hosted by Chelsea Handler. Gold Derby’s predictions center is open,...

The search was on this year for Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Will Smith, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith: They topped Google’s just-released list of the Top 10 actors who generated the most Google searches in 2022.
Not only did the five celebrities top Google’s year-end lists of the most-searched actors, they also accounted for four of the top five spots on the overall “People” list, with the only non-actor crashing that top five being Vladimir Putin at No. 4.
See all of the entertainment-related Top 10 Google Search lists below, and click on the image above for a photo gallery.
The most-searched movie? Thor: Love and Thunder, beating out runners-up Black Adam and Top Gun: Maverick. Among TV shows, searchers were most curious about Euphoria, with House of the Dragon at No. 2.

It’s 4 p.m. on a Monday afternoon and Anna Sorokin is blasting Drake from her quaint apartment in the East Village of Manhattan. When I arrive at the top of her five-floor walk-up, she doesn’t come out, instead yelling from the bathroom to let myself in.
“Sorry, I’ll be right out. I can’t figure out what to wear! What’s the vibe?” she asks, in that iconic European accent that Julia Garner mastered in her portrayal of the fake German heiress in “Inventing Anna.”
The Netflix series created by Shonda Rhimes details the real-life story of 31 year-old Sorokin, who throughout the 2010s took the name Anna Delvey as she scammed her way through Manhattan, using an invented trust fund to persuade the city’s power brokers to invest in a members-only arts club. In 2019, she was convicted with grand larceny, among a slew of other financial crimes,...

With individual notices for “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” and an ensemble bid for the former likely coming her way, Julia Garner is poised to pick up more Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in 2023 than any other performer. Being singled out for her turns on both Netflix series would not only make the 28-year-old the ninth dual TV contender in SAG Awards history, but also the youngest person in general to ever be individually nominated by the guild for multiple performances at once.
Garner’s work as the morally complex criminal Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” has already brought her two SAG Award nominations each for Best TV Drama Ensemble and Best TV Drama Actress (2019 and 2021). According to Gold Derby’s predictions, she is effectively running fifth in both races this year, with “The Crown” cast and its new star, Imelda Staunton, being the respective frontrunners. Garner is faring better on our...
