To transform into the famed “Rehab” singer, Marisa Abela realized she had to rehabilitate Amy Winehouse’s memory herself with the help of modern therapy.
The “Back to Black” lead was faced with dismantling the assumptions of Winehouse’s legacy and the media judgments upon her love life, drug use, and death at age 27 after being cast in the buzzy yet assumedly controversial biopic. The Winehouse fan backlash began as soon as Abela was announced to be portraying her; paparazzi stalked the set, and tabloids dove into viral clips of Abela singing in character, only to debate whether or not she looked like Winehouse onscreen, let alone sound like her.
It’s proof that the lore surrounding Winehouse more than a decade after her passing is still too easily slotted into certain judgments in the zeitgeist: tortured artist, lovesick wife, impulsive addict, victim of men. And how can one person...

Robert Downey Jr. played a Method actor in Ben Stiller’s comedy “Tropic Thunder” and things got meta on set. In a new GQ video interview, Downey’s co-star Danny McBride remembered accidentally hearing Downey going Method himself and staying in character as he went to take a bathroom break in between takes.
McBride played an explosives expert in the film and was given an earpiece to communicate with the set as his character was perched in a watchtower above the production. It turns out the earpiece was connected to the microphones of several of the cast and crew down below.
“I guess during one of the takes, they had left Downey’s mic on, and so I’m sitting up there, and I’m like, ‘Oh shit, I can hear what he’s saying,'” McBride said. “He was talking to people, and he was in character the whole time.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

“Industry” breakout star Marisa Abela almost turned down playing iconic singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse for biopic “Back to Black.”
Abela revealed in a Harper’s Bazaar UK cover story that she was worried she wouldn’t be “taken seriously” in character as Winehouse if she wasn’t “torturing” herself for the role and going “Method.” Grammy winner Winehouse openly struggled with addiction and died of alcohol poisoning at age 27.
“My first instinct was to say ‘No, that’s too much, too huge,'” Abela said of taking on Winehouse’s legacy. “I thought, maybe I’m not going to be taken seriously if I’m not torturing myself in order to play this part. But I’m not a Method actress. I wasn’t walking around my flat as Amy. The work was enough for me.”

Robert Downey Jr. has long defended his role in “Tropic Thunder,” the 2008 comedy from director Ben Stiller that cast the “Iron Man” star as an egotistical Australian thespian who takes Method acting to an extreme by undergoing “pigmentation alteration” surgery to darken his skin in order to play a Black solider in a war movie. Some have come down on Downey Jr. in recent years for doing Blackface in the film, but the actor has never agreed with the backlash.
During an appearance on Rob Lowe’s “Literally!” podcast while on his “Oppenheimer” awards campaign trail, Downey Jr. drew a line between “Tropic Thunder” and Norman Lear’s iconic sitcom “All in the Family.” He said both works shine a light on “tropes that are not right and had been perpetuated for too long” and faced criticism from those who weren’t seeing the bigger picture.

Natalie Portman’s career has spanned an Oscar-winning role and Marvel blockbusters, but what it has never included is Method acting. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, the “May December” star revealed she’s never once tried to Method act during her career — and even said such a technique is not something many women can afford to do as actors.
“I’ve gotten very into roles, but I think it’s honestly a luxury that women can’t afford,” Portman explained. “I don’t think that children or partners would be very understanding of, you know, me making everyone call me ‘Jackie Kennedy’ all the time.”
According to Portman, going full Method actor just wouldn’t align with her role as a mother. That’s not to say she doesn’t do serious prep. She trained as a ballet dancer for months to get into character for “Black Swan,...

Jared Leto joined Angela Bassett as a presenter at the 2024 Golden Globes and took a moment to roast himself over his status as one of Hollywood’s most infamous Method actors. The Oscar winner helped announce this year’s categories for best supporting actress and actor in a motion picture. The winners were Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” and Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer,” respectively.
“I have been in presenter mode for weeks now,” Leto told the audience. “I’ve been doing research developing my character, incessantly reminding everyone around me to please call me by my character name, dammit.”
“You mean ‘Jared Leto?'” Bassett asked.
“Exactly! I’ve also learned the art of holding an envelope,” Leto continued. “It’s about the angle, the grip. It’s about the subtlety, the meaningful connection between presenter partner and paper. It is a deeply emotional journey…This is embodying...

“Did we meet before the table read?” Emily Blunt asks Anne Hathaway.
“This is so embarrassing,” Hathaway replies, “because I remember every second of the first time I met you. I’m so much more into you than you are into me. It’s fine. It’s fine.”
Blunt may not recall the specifics of how the pair initially connected before working on 2006’s “The Devil Wears Prada,” but the rest of us can’t forget the moment we first saw them together. Their chemistry — Blunt playing imperious aloofness as lead assistant Emily to Hathaway’s bumbling, frizzy charm as junior assistant Andrea — buoyed the workplace romantic comedy to $325 million at the global box office and made both women into megastars. Hathaway, emerging from “The Princess Diaries,” proved she could stand Manolo-to-Manolo with Meryl Streep’s villainous fashion editor, while Blunt, an untested actor, found herself suddenly a household name.

Sunday night’s 2023 BET Awards gave one of the greatest his flowers.
During “culture’s biggest night,” Busta Rhymes was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award — presented by Marlon Wayans and Swizz Beatz — where he shared an inspirational message in his acceptance speech, and got emotional while reflecting on the award.
Speaking with Et’s Kevin Frazier after the show at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, Rhymes explained what, exactly, brought him to tears during his speech.
“I was thinking about everyone that I acknowledged. I was thinking about the ones I couldn’t get to because I ain’t have enough time,” Rhymes explained. “[And] I’m looking at my kids for the first time all together at such a prestigious moment in my life.”
Several of the artist’s six kids were in the audience on Sunday, and Rhymes admitted that it was their love and support that really moved him.

On Wednesday morning, Disney+ subscribers were treated to the first episode of Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion, which included an opening sequence that highlighted the mystery behind the series: shape-shifting aliens had infiltrated Earth. Soon after the episode aired, a report surfaced noting that the opening had been created using artificial intelligence, something that sparked an outcry on social media among users speculating it had cost artists their jobs.
Now Method Studios, which is behind the opening, wants to clarify those reports surrounding how AI was used in the animated open made by its design division: “AI is just one tool among the array of tool sets our artists used. Meryl Streep literally transformed into Miranda Priestley for “The Devil Wears Prada.”
Streep’s co-star Emily Blunt, whose quippy comedic turn in the film marked her breakout role, revealed that Streep was “miserable” staying in character for the beloved 2006 film during a conversation with Brian Cox for Variety’s Actors on Actors. Streep starred as an Anna Wintour-inspired fashion magazine editor who constantly abuses her employees in her quest for perfection.
“She’s amazing and was slightly terrifying on that film,” Blunt said of Streep. “She said it was one of the first times she’s tried Method acting. But it made her so miserable, playing Miranda.”
Oscar winner Streep previously admitted that it was “horrible” to isolate herself from her co-stars on set while in character as Miranda.
“I was [miserable] in my trailer,” Streep recalled in 2021. “I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed!

“The Line” takes a hard, lean look at a crisis plaguing headlines every year: the horrors behind the scenes of hazing at college fraternities.
In the stylish and convincingly acted drama premiering this week out of Tribeca Festival’s Spotlight Narrative lineup, “Hereditary” star and filmmaker himself Alex Wolff plays Tom, a devoted indoctrinee of a fictional fraternity happy to play along with his brotherhood’s disturbing hazing practices and its culture of foundationally toxic masculinity. Sure, Misty Quigley has been known to drug and kidnap people on Showtime's "Yellowjackets," but we all need a friend -- which is what makes it so sad to see how Misty's first true friendship plays out in season 2. As always, there are two Mistys this season: the one in the present, played by Christina Ricci, and the one in the past, played by Samantha Hanratty. Both Mistys have had friendships of convenience with the other Yellowjackets, but they've shown signs of an improved social life in recent weeks; present-day Misty has buddied up with Elijah Wood's new character, Walter, while past Misty has struck up a genuine friendship with Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman).

“Method acting” long ago lost its meaning.
Instead, it’s become a catchall to describe an intense commitment to getting it right on stage or screen. It’s an all-out approach that sees performers pack and shed pounds, feast on live cockroaches or raw bison, extract teeth or eschew showers, and remain in character between takes. Those are just a few examples of the extremes to which Robert De Niro, Christian Bale, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Shia Labeouf, Charlize Theron, Daniel Day-Lewis and their ilk push themselves in the service of their art. For their suffering, they receive Oscars and Emmys, along with a ton of media coverage — just look at the scores of pieces documenting the gonzo things Jared Leto has done each time one of his movies get released.
The payoff can be electrifying performances that blur the lines between character and actor. But it’s an approach...

Brian Cox leaned into his now well-known views on Method acting during a late-night visit to promote the final season of Succession.
The veteran Scottish actor, who plays patriarch Logan Roy on the hit HBO series, has publicly expressed his disapproval of the immersive acting approach ever since the viral New Yorker profile on his co-star Jeremy Strong, who plays his onscreen son Kendall Roy, first made headlines in 2021.
Strong, in a later cover story with The Hollywood Reporter, admitted that he was hurt that his co-stars, including Cox, came off dismissive about his process in the piece. “I had a safe forum to share those things — and ultimately that experience was put in doubt,” he said of opening up in the profile. Still, he said of his co-stars, “We’re a family in every sense of the word. But foundationally, there’s deep respect and even love.”

Brian Cox’s hatred of Method acting has gone so viral in recent weeks that he parodied himself during a recent visit to “The Tonight Show” to promote the upcoming fourth and final season of HBO’s “Succession.” Host Jimmy Fallon asked Cox about all the media attention surrounding his hatred of Method acting, to which the actor responded, “Well you know, Jimmy, I’ve been a little harsh.”
“I’ve been a little harsh on it,” Cox continued. “I’m sorry about that… in fact, I’ve been trying to set the record straight in a MasterClass series of acting that I’ve been doing. Well actually, I brought a clip. I think this more eloquently explains my feelings about acting. Can we show it?”
Fallon threw to a clip of Brian Cox in a fake MasterClass video.

It takes a remarkably intense performance to get attention at the Academy Awards. Tortured performances from actors immersed in their characters, from the likes of Marlon Brando and Daniel Day-Lewis, set the bar high. But other well-regarded actors think investing so much off-screen dedication into a part isn’t worth the trouble. Either way, some of the most acclaimed film performances draw from the same intensive program: The Method. So, what is Method acting, and is it required to win the top acting awards at the Oscars?

Method acting, at its core, is an extreme form of immersion for actors. Performers dive into the minds of their characters, even when the cameras aren’t rolling. The process goes beyond rehearsing scenes and running lines. Actors like Day-Lewis stay in character the entire time they’re on set.

Journalists keep asking Brian Cox to talk smack about Method acting – the preferred technique of Jeremy Strong, who plays Cox’s on-screen son on “Succession” – and Cox is always happy to oblige.
In an interview with Variety, Cox was asked to follow up on Strong’s recent comments to GQ in response to Cox’s previous comments about his acting style – Cox said that he thinks “there’s a certain amount of pain at the root of Jeremy,” and Strong responded that while Cox has “earned the right to say whatever the f— he wants,” he’s actually fine, and his character Kendall Roy is the one in pain.
“I’m glad he is not in pain personally,” Cox said, and called Strong “a wonderful actor.” But he reiterated his previous comments about disliking Method acting, which he considers an unnecessary American affectation that leads to actors taking their jobs...

Brian Cox is calling out the very American way of Method acting.
The Scottish star of “Succession” addressed co-star Jeremy Strong’s approach to his character Kendall Roy in the hit HBO series, which is concluding after its upcoming fourth and final season.
“I’m glad he is not in pain personally,” Cox told Variety, calling Strong “a wonderful actor.” Yet the Method acting debate is rooted in what Strong represents, according to Cox.
“It’s really a cultural clash,” he said. “I don’t put up with all that American shit. I’m sorry. All that sort of ‘I think, therefore I feel.’ Just do the job. Don’t ‘identify.'”
Cox pointed to Strong’s former boss and mentor Daniel Day-Lewis, with whom Cox co-starred with on 1997’s “The Boxer.”
“He retired at the age of 55, and I’m going, ‘That’s when the roles become really interesting.

Angela Bassett took Lady Gaga’s “Top Gun: Maverick” lyrics literally and held the hand of her fellow acting nominee, Austin Butler.
In a moving moment during the 2023 Oscars, the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” Best Supporting Actress nominee Bassett held “Elvis” star Butler’s hand while his category was being read. Bassett had already lost earlier in the evening to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actress Jamie Lee Curtis. Butler, who went Method to play the King of Rock ‘n Roll, was beat out by Brendan Fraser for his turn in “The Whale.”
Bassett became a viral sensation for her moment with Butler, as well as a special shoutout by presenters and “Creed III” star Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors earlier in the evening.
“Hey Auntie,” Jordan said onstage, referencing his “Black Panther” character Erik Killmonger saying the same to Bassett’s Queen Ramonda in the first MCU film.

Brian Cox just wants Jeremy Strong to chill out.
The “Succession” co-stars who play a rocky father-son duo on the Emmy-winning HBO series have publicly debated the merits of Method acting, with Cox continuously warning Strong in the press about the pitfalls of over-committing to a character.
In a new Town & Country cover story, Cox called Strong’s Method acting “fucking annoying,” adding, “Don’t get me going on it.”
Cox said, “He’s a very good actor, and the rest of the ensemble is all Ok with this. But knowing a character and what the character does is only part of the skill set. He’s still that guy, because he feels if he went somewhere else he’d lose it. But he won’t!”
Cox added, “Strong is talented. He’s fucking gifted. When you’ve got the gift, celebrate the gift. Go back to your trailer...

Living review: Bill Nighy delivers an almost startling transformation in this beautiful period drama
Dir: Oliver Hermanus. Starring: Bill Nighy, Aimee Lou Wood, Alex Sharp, Tom Burke. 12A, 102 minutes.
Ikiru, in its plaintive modernity, may not be the most widely recognisable of Akira Kurosawa’s films. It can’t be slotted so neatly beside the savage violence and heroic ideals of his historical films, Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957) or Ran (1985). But the 1952 drama’s message, that a worthy legacy can be built from the tiniest and most fleeting of things, has endured. It’s encapsulated in the single image of a dying bureaucrat (played by Takashi Shimura) singing to himself as he sits on the swingset of the playground he helped build. Decades later, it’s an image that’s been reframed but barely rethought by South African director Oliver Hermanus, Nobel Prize-winning screenwriter Ishiguro Kazuo and actor Bill Nighy with Living. But, like the bureaucrat’s cherished swingset, that vague feeling of...

Ethan Hawke has a thing or two to say about misconceptions behind Method acting.
The “Last Movie Stars” director discussed the Method, as formerly taught at the Actors’ Studio by Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg using the Stanislavski Technique, during a PGA panel moderated by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz at the Warner Bros. Discovery offices in New York on Tuesday.
In the CNN Films and HBO Max docuseries about famed Method actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s marriage, respective careers, and acting practices, star Vincent D’Onofrio exemplifies a Method moment by reading a script with emotion, and crying on cue. D’Onofrio teaches at the Studio and even helped Hawke with his “Training Day” audition, with the role landing Hawke his first Oscar nomination.
“If you’re going to make a documentary about Miles Davis, I really want to learn something about music, not just about Miles Davis,” director Hawke explained of the scene.

Darren Aronofsky's "Requiem For A Dream" is an intense film that merited intense preparation on the part of its cast and crew. Adapted from a novel by Hubert Selby Jr., "Requiem for a Dream" tells the story of four people struggling with addiction and how it takes a toll on their hopes and dreams and lives in New York. Harry, Marion, and Tyrone, played by Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans, respectively, have formed a heroin dependency, while Harry's mother, Sara (Ellen Burstyn in an Oscar-nominated role) develops an addiction to amphetamines as she seeks to suppress her appetite and fit into an old dress for a game show appearance.
Writing for The Evening Standard, Burstyn called "Requiem for a Dream" her "biggest challenge," one that was "harder than 'The Exorcist'" for her. In an oral history with Vulture looking back on the film 20 years after its release,...

Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield has come out in defense of Method acting, making the case that the craft is misunderstood. His comments come following those of such actors as David Harbour, Mads Mikkelsen and Sebastian Stan, who have respectively referred to the method as “dangerous,” “bullsh*t” and “self-indulgent.”
“There’s been a lot of misconceptions around what Method acting is, I think…It’s not about being an asshole to everyone on set,” Garfield told Marc Maron in an episode of his Maron’s podcast Wtf published Monday. “It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances, and being really nice to the crew simultaneously, and being a normal human being, and being able to drop it when you need to, and staying in it when you want to stay in it.”
Garfield went on to say that he is “kind of bothered” by those who would dismiss the method outright,...
