Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman and Jeffrey Katzenberg were among the Hollywood luminaries who paid tribute to Bert Fields, the power lawyer who died in August at age 93, at a memorial service held Sunday at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
Fields’ client Cruise, who appeared via video, shared how he met the lawyer — whom he referred to as the most interesting man in the world — at a dinner in 1989 with his Rain Man co-star Dustin Hoffman, another Fields client.
At the time, Cruise said, he didn’t know who Fields was, but when he found out Fields was Hoffman’s lawyer, he knew he wanted to hire the attorney.

Hollywood gathered Sunday to pay tribute to Bert Fields, the legendary lawyer who was in the middle of high profile battles spanning several decades. Fields died in August at the age of 93.
Among those paying their respects were Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dustin Hoffman and Michael Ovitz, who each recalled him as a loyal friend. Elaine May and Tom Cruise also recorded video tributes that were played for the audience at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
Cruise, a longtime client of Fields, remembered him as “a person who I knew I could always count on.”
“I think we all know how valuable that is in this world — when someone says they’re going to do something and they actually do it,” Cruise said. “I’m just very grateful to him.”
With a courtly manner and a roster of high-powered clients, Fields developed a reputation as the most fearsome lawyer in Hollywood.

“Bombshell” shocked us all earlier this month when it over-performed with four Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, including for ensemble. The star-studded cast is peppered with a bunch of familiar faces, one of whom is Allison Janney, who would set a new SAG Awards benchmark if the cast wins.
The actress is seeking to become the first person to win three SAG Awards for ensemble. How difficult has this barrier been to crack? Janney is one of a whopping 18 people with two victories, having won as part of the “American Beauty” (1999) and “The Help” (2011) casts.
“Bombshell” marks Janney’s fifth bid in the category — she was also up for “The Hours” (2002) and “Hairspray” (2007) — the second most behind six-time ensemble nominees Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt. Blanchett and Pitt have one win each, for “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) and “Inglourious Basterds” (2009), respectively (Pitt...

The working title for “Bombshell” was “Fair and Balanced,” and it still feels as though that would be the better option. Jay Roach’s compelling but uneven takedown of former Fox News and Fox Television Stations czar Roger Ailes is less a fiery expression of political outrage than a work of entertainment aiming to be all things to all people.
The movie is introduced as “a dramatization inspired by actual events,” a blend of freely imagined fiction and carefully recreated reality.
The first hint that there will be liberties comes when erstwhile Fox News host Megyn Kelly opens the film as our fourth-wall-breaking tour guide. Strutting through Fox headquarters in a patriotic stretch dress, she shows us the offices where the Murdoch family holds court. We visit cramped cubicles in which Sean Hannity (Spencer Garrett), Geraldo Rivera (Tony Plana) and Greta Van Susteren (Anne Ramsay) denounce “fake news.” And we glimpse the feared second floor,...

Bombshell teases a tense work environment for women in new trailer, including a cast of Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie.
After months of lacking a title, Bombshell is imminent. And that title seems apt since the new Jay Roach movie is sure to be a topic of discussion on cable news for months to come. Roach and Charles Randolph’s cinematic take on the scandal that brought down Fox News CEO Roger Ailes was already a provocative subject matter even before it built a star-studded cast that includes Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. Now details are slowly coming out for the film while early reactions have been nothing short of ecstatic about the cast's portrayal of the women who brought Fox's sins out in the open. HEre's what you need to know.

In a brief filed late Friday afternoon, attorneys for former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson have urged court officials against moving her sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit against Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes from a public court into a secret arbitration proceeding.
In a statement previously obtained by People, Ailes' lawyers had claimed earlier this week that "Gretchen Carlson had an arbitration clause in her contract, stating that any employment dispute regarding her employment at Fox News must be done via confidential arbitration."
"Because Ms. Carlson's lawsuit violated the arbitration clause, a motion was filed in federal court to have the case arbitrated.
