Widely recognized for portraying Cassie Howard in Sam Levinson’s Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney is one of the biggest and most successful actresses in the industry currently. She starred in Sony Pictures’ Madame Web, the romantic comedy Anyone but You, and her recent horror movie, Immaculate. The actress has received praise for the characters she has portrayed on screen, and there is no stopping her.
Sweeney, who has earlier earned nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance in Euphoria and The White Lotus Season 1, is now looking forward to cementing her place in the industry as one of the finest actresses. Her representatives are also very cautious about what stories roll out about her in the industry, and their recent reaction to a credible industry insider had some fans raise their eyebrows and ask questions.

Netflix provides an opportunity for many overlooked films to get a new lease on life, from comedies to action movies. The latest picture to get the Netflix bump is We Summon the Darkness, which since being added to the platform a few days ago is already number 6 on the Top 10 most-watched films list. Why, then, is this title doing so well with subscribers?
Marc Meyers is behind the camera on We Summon the Darkness and his film is set at the tail-end of the 1980s heavy metal craze, focusing on Alexis, Beverley and Val, who meet up with some guys on the way to a concert. Shortly after, the female trio invite them back to a remote country house where things rapidly get out of control.

Netflix added two new films today. The first is a Christian Bale-starring period piece set in the Ottoman Empire titled The Promise, the other an Alexandra Daddario-led horror movie called We Summon the Darkness. And here’s what you need to know in case you want to check either one, or even both of them out at some point this weekend.
The Promise first released in 2016. It’s directed by Terry George and based on a script he wrote alongside Robin Swicord. Aside from Bale, who plays a supporting character, the film also stars Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Marwan Kenzari.
As mentioned, the movie is set during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. Location aside, it’s centered on a love triangle between a talented medical student, a famous American journalist and a young and beautiful woman. Where fans of...

While multiplexes may not be opening any time soon, that doesn’t mean genre fans still don’t have other means to take in new horror films these days. Here’s a look at a pair of recent indie movies that I had the chance to check out: We Summon the Darkness from Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and Witches in the Woods by director Jordan Barker.
We Summon the Darkness: As someone who lived through the Satanic Panic of the ’80s and early ’90s, Marc Myers’ ode to heavy metal lifestyles, We Summon the Darkness, was 100 percent my jam. A brutal and surprising bloodbath that managed to subvert any expectations I had going into it, We Summon the Darkness may stumble a bit here and there tonally, but ultimately delivers a wickedly fun time all the same.

We Summon the Darkness has already started releasing on home entertainment formats. The film, from director Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and writer Alan Trezza, focuses on a killing spree, taking part across the U.S. Midwest. However, those behind this mayhem might not be who you expect. We Summon the Darkness has a well-rounded cast and includes: Maddie Hasson ("Impulse"), Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch), Keean Johnson and Johnny Knoxville. The film is slated to release today, in the United Kingdom and in a few formats this June, in the U.S. The official trailer, from Lionsgate, is a bit revealing. It not only shows the killers, but the clip also shows: plot points, killing methods and parts of the ending. If you are a horror fan and intend to pick this title up, you might want to avoid watching any promotional material. Signature Entertainment is handling the UK release. Signature...

Heavy metal and horror seem to go hand in hand. Many people who like one, will like the other, so it’s maybe a bit of a surprise that there’s not actually that many movies that link the two. Most recently Deathgasm was ridiculous, loud and fun, the real-life horror story of Lords of Chaos was scarily violent and Devil’s Candy is perhaps the most metal of the three. So We Summon The Darkness has some entertaining company to live up to.
Set in the eighties, a group of three girls meet up with three like-minded guys to enjoy a night of metal, drinking and each others company. But one group have very different ideas to the others about way the night is heading.

Arriving on VOD and digital platforms today is the heavy metal horror flick We Summon the Darkness, from director Marc Meyers and writer Alan Trezza. The flick is centered around a trio of women who head out for a metal show and pick up a trio of guys for a fun night of shenanigans that take a deadly turn, leaving them all wondering just who will be left standing by the end of the night.

A film should never be overly reliant upon a twist. When done right, sudden turns in a plot can spice things up, as we’ve seen countless times in cinema. However, the wrong handling of a twist can really mess up a work. Luckily, despite leaning too heavily upon a twist almost everyone will see coming, We Summon the Darkness manages to be a lot of fun. As much as the movie follows the rules of the horror/thriller genre, it does so with a sense of humor that helps set it apart. While not a comedy, the flick knows how to have a good time, and that goes a long way. Plus, any showcase for the talented Alexandra Daddario is an added bonus. It hits VOD this weekend and is well worth a look. The movie is a tongue in cheek horror/thriller hybrid, starting out as one thing,...

A rash of 1980s-era satanic ritual killings puts Pastor John Henry Butler (Johnny Knoxville) front and center in rural America’s consciousness because his church is doing its very best to combat the disintegration of society with the word of God. Just as his increased television appearances rally the Bible Belt to his cause (treating rock music and other not quite “demonic” practices as sinful weapons destroying their children’s souls), however, they also work to embolden those he is forsaking. More than calling out the as yet unknown murderers for their crimes, he’s pointing fingers at a youth culture that already exists as a response to his mode of fear-mongering and idiotic censorship. So of course they’ll rebel further by running away to embrace their heavy metal lives more.

Brandon Sklenar has been cast in Midway, the Roland Emmerich-helmed WWII drama starring Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Ed Skrein, Aaron Eckhart, Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, and Nick Jonas. Wes Tooke wrote the script for the film, which is based on the true story of the Battle of Midway, considered to be the turning point in the war against Japan in WWII. Sklenar will play George ‘Tex’ Gay Jr., who was the sole survivor of the 30-aircrew that participated in the pivotal Battle of Midway. Emmerich’s Centropolis Entertainment and Harald Kloser are producing the pic, with Mark Gordon exec producing. The film will be released on Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label on November 8, 2019. In addition to Midway, Sklenar has boarded the indie film Jonesin’, from director Scott Westby and writer Kevin Doree. Directed by: Joe Dante
Cast: Anton Yelchin (Max), Alexandra Daddario (Olivia), Ashley Greene (Evelyn), Oliver Cooper (Travis)
Breaking up is tough all the way around. Yeah right, usually of all the misery is one sided. The one who lowers the hammer of heartbreak and the other who is left to pick up the pieces. That’s usually the way it goes down, but not always. On occasion there are really, really nice guys who suffer through a bad relationship (sometimes an entire lifetime) because there just doesn’t seem to be a way out without sorrow, a feeling of betrayal, or an amped up display of crazy. Typically it’s a combo of all three.

I’m a Joe Dante fan. That is something I cannot hide. His early work made him a horror icon, and Gremlins stands as one of my favorite movies of all time. These are facts, and if I ever get to meet Joe Dante, I’d like nothing more than to buy him a drink and hear him reminisce about the good old days. You know, the exciting, creative times that yielded scene after scene of infectious horror fun.
Basically, any time before Burying The Ex happened.
It’s not that Dante created a soulless romcom disguised as a cheeky horror comedy. It’s more that any voiceless filmmaker could have made Burying The Ex. No scene glistens with Dante’s typically demented polish, and everyone involved seems to be phoning it in. There’s not a single genuine moment of chemistry to be found between the three members of this undead love triangle,...

Joe Dante has always been a filmmaker that I've deeply admired and I feel that a good amount of his work doesn't get discussed nearly enough. I completely get this talented filmmaker's attraction to the EC Comics-style concept in Burying the Ex, but Alan Trezza's script is too lazy and uninspired for this movie to be anywhere close to a comeback for Joe Dante.
Obviously made under time constraints and budget limitations, with the proper nourishment and a proper rewrite from Dante himself, I could easily see Burying the Ex in theory being a project that could compliment Dante's sensibilities. His trademark influences of Mel Blanc-inspired frenetic humor and the dark surrealistic atmosphere absorbed from monster movie matinees would have been the perfect marriage for this movie's living dead love triangle concept. All Joe Dante needed was a solid script, because everybody knows there is only so much...

Alan Trezza's screenplay for "Burying The Ex" might as well have had Joe Dante's name above the title from the moment he wrote it, because it is a perfect fit for the filmmaker's sensibilities. Dante's three leads (Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, and Alexandra Daddario) are all game for whatever he asks of them, and they seem to be having a blast with the material. There's a slightly muted quality to the film, though, which keeps it from being a complete pleasure, but considering how rarely we get a new film from Dante, I'll take something slight over nothing at all. There's a hint of "Death Becomes Her" in this film's DNA, and in certain sequences, Dante's live-action cartoon aesthetic is pretty clearly expressed. If anything, I wish the movie pushed some of those ideas further, because it feels like Dante's having fun and so is the cast. Anton Yelchin plays Max,...

Ex to Grind: Dante’s ZomCom Never Finds Its Pulse
Zombies are difficult subject matters for the screen. A staple of a popular subgenre, original narrative inspiration is rare in a field of low yield thrills from contemporary films unable to match the iconic masters, like early George Romero. Of course, every now and then, something innovative and exciting comes along, such as Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002), and it’s surprisingly energetic sequel. But increasingly, like all glorious horror tropes, comedy has taken the place of tension. Sometimes, in the right hands, this can also be inviting. So it’s disappointing to see a director like Joe Dante, the man who balanced these elements deftly in classics likes Piranha (1981), Gremlins (1984), and The ‘Burbs (1989) turn up with his latest, Burying the Ex. With its overtly fresh faced young cast and first time script from Alan Trezza (adapted from his own...

She seeks refuge within The Sanctuary, a secret organization run by the Vatican that teaches the possessed to channel their inner demon and use its power as a weapon against evil. It’s been some time since Joe Dante’s Burying the Ex premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival but there’s finally a trailer.
Here is Anton Yelchin trying to break up with Ashley Greene though she’s a rather single-minded member of the undead.
At least he didn’t deal with her the Ash Williams way.
Dante is a fine director, but word from Venice was that Alan Trezza’s script was fraught with issues, including a lot of ‘nagging girlfriend’ cliches that were more embarrassing than funny. The metaphor of an undead relationship is a good one, but it won’t fly if the representations are cheap, tacky or offensive.
There’s also the small matter of Life After Beth coming along recently and taking a very similar take on the whole zomantic comedy thing.
Still, I’m hoping that there’s a lot of fun to be had here.

Director Joe Dante has been a steady presence in film and television over the years, whether as the director of The ‘Burbs or several episodes of Hawaii Five-o. Dante, however, is perhaps best known for helming the 1984 feature Gremlins, and its 1990 follow-up Gremlins 2: The New Batch. With his last feature coming in 2009, many were excited to hear that Dante would be returning behind the camera for a new feature, this one falling into the horror-comedy genre once again.
Titled Burying the Ex, the film’s synopsis is as follows.
A guy’s regrets over moving in with his girlfriend are compounded when she dies and comes back as a zombie.
Dante directs from a script by Alan Trezza, who makes his feature film writing debut by adapting his own 2008 short story. The film stars Anton Yelchin as the male lead, with Ashley Greene as the titular Ex, alongside Alexandra Daddario.

"There's a freaky Tim Burton movie in your living room." If the indie horror comedy Life After Beth didn't deliver the right kind of zombie romantic comedy you were hoping for, maybe Burying the Ex from Gremlins director Joe Dante is more your speed. Anton Yelchin stars in the story of a young man who thinks he's met the perfect girl in Evelyn (Ashley Greene), but then becomes a nightmare to deal with at home. But it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore when she dies, leaving him to fall in love with another girl (Alexandra Daddario). But that's when Evelyn comes back from the dead to complicate things in the worst way, and the first international trailer shows off the messy results of that story unfolding. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Joe Dante's Burying the Ex from Voltage Pictures: Burying the Ex is directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins,...

Anton Yelchin discovers that “always and forever” rings true for Ashley Greene in the first clip released from Joe Dante‘s “Burying the Ex.” The Alan Trezza-scripted film is based on his 2008 short film of the same name about a young man whose plans to move on after the passing of his girlfriend are interrupted when she comes back from the dead with an ultimatum. Last seen on the Venice Lido in 2009 with his acclaimed 3D horror The Hole, Joe Dante returns to the festival with the disappointing schlock fest that is Burying the Ex. All I wanted to bury was my head in my hands during the screening of this tired, cheap and cliché-ridden film.
