Motion Picture Assocation Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin continued to not hold back at CinemaCon, delivering another Eliot Ness-fueled, colorful crusade speech against piracy.
“Remember – these aren’t teenagers playing an elaborate prank!” exclaimed Rivkin in a drum that’s been beaten by the MPA since the days of the org’s forefather Jack Valenti.
“The perpetrators are real-life mobsters … organized crime syndicates – many of whom engage in child pornography, prostitution, drug trafficking, and so many other societal ills!”
“They operate websites that draw in millions of unsuspecting viewers whose personal data can then fall prey to malware and hackers,” Rivkin said.
Make no mistake here at CinemaCon where the crusade against anti-piracy is very serious. Divorce papers might have the power to slip through to movie stars on stage during studio presentations at the exhib-studio confab, but take out your phone and the security guards will jump on you...

CinemaCon kicks off today in Las Vegas, and as the official convention of the National Association of Theater Owners gets underway, organizers have added another honoree to the roster: Geena Davis.
The Oscar winner will be feted with the Viola Davis Trailblazer Award during the Big Screen Achievement Awards inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on April 11.
“Geena Davis exemplifies the true essence of a trailblazer in Hollywood for not only her remarkable film career, but also in her tireless advocacy championing underrepresented voices in film and other forms of media,” said CinemaCon managing director Mitch Neuhauser. The trophy will be the second to carry the name after Davis was presented with the honor ahead of the release of The Woman King in 2022.
Geena Davis will have other duties in Las Vegas. Her Bentonville Film Festival has partnered with the Coca-Cola Refreshing Films program in a shared mission of supporting next generation creative talent.

Leave it to Tom Rothman to get a crowd going.
It has become a tradition for the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chair-ceo to kick off CinemaCon with a colorful remark. This year was no different as he took to the stage in Las Vegas Monday night and addressed the state of theatrical as it continues to find its footing following the Covid-19 crisis.
“For the past three years, as the punditocracy pissed on your business, we at Sony held fast. We were the only major studio devoted entirely to theatrical,” said Rothman, sparking applause. “We were sure in the conviction that movies in movie theaters couldn’t just survive but triumph.”
Rothman also delivered another message: “The other thing pundits say is movie stars don’t matter anymore. I really hope all my competitors believe that shit. True movie stars matter more than ever, they are just more rare than ever.

CinemaCon has reportedly ramped up its security protocols after Olivia Wilde was served child custody papers on stage during last year’s event.
The 39-year-old actor-director was presenting her Harry Styles-led thriller Don’t Worry Darling when a court process server handed her a brown envelope.
Wilde later called the incident a “sabotage” attempt by her ex-fiancé, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis.
A source told Variety at the time that Sudeikis “had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered”.
Variety now cites CinemaCon sources as confirming that “extra layers of security” have been put in place to prevent similar debacles.
These new measures reportedly include security guards around the stage and the studios presenting will now get to decide who sits in the front row.

CinemaCon is making sure things don’t get Wilde this year.
The annual convention of movie theater owners is updating security protocols for its 2023 edition, after a shocking breach last year involving “Don’t Worry Darling” director Olivia Wilde.
The filmmaker was served child custody papers on behalf of former partner Jason Sudeikis at the 2022 convention while in the middle of a presentation on stage at Caesar’s Palace. Images of Wilde opening a manila envelope slipped to her by a process server went viral on social media, an incident she would later describe as “vicious.”
This year, numerous sources told Variety that extra layers of security have been put in place to make sure no such hiccups occur. This includes the installation of guards around the stage perimeter, an insider added, as well as extra manpower in the wings, both stage right and left. Additionally, each studio that presents at...

Olivia Wilde is opening up about being served child custody papers in April while onstage at CinemaCon, where she was introducing her forthcoming film Don’t Worry Darling.
In April, Wilde was presenting the psychological thriller to an audience of 3,000 exhibition industry insiders and press when an unidentified guest approached the stage to interrupt her as she read from the teleprompter. The guest placed a manila envelope on the main stage inside the Colosseum theater at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
“This is for me?” Wilde asked the woman as she picked up the envelope. She pulled out its contents and read the top page, said “Thank you,” and then went back to her prepared comments.
It was later revealed that inside the envelope were child custody papers from Wilde’s former partner Jason Sudeikis. The pair, who split in 2020 after nine years together,...

Olivia Wilde, onstage Tuesday during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation for her upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling,” was mysteriously interrupted by an unidentified person who approached from the audience and slid a manila envelope in her direction.
“This is for me?” Wilde asked on stage, suggesting that the moment was not staged.
But the director didn’t appear phased as she looked at it its contents, and it was unclear at the time what the envelope contained.
It is now known the envelope contained legal papers from her ex-boyfriend, Jason Sudeikis, with whom she shares two children.
“Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis,” a source told TheWrap.
The source added that “Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved...

CinemaCon is set to reevaluate its safety protocols following an incident on April 26 in which Olivia Wilde was served a mysterious manila envelope on stage at the Las Vegas event while presenting her new film “Don’t Worry Darling.” The envelope included the words “personal and confidential” on it. Wilde thought the file was a script when she opened it on stage. The incident occurred during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation.
“To protect the integrity of our studio partners and the talent, we will reevaluate our security protocols,” NATO managing director and head of CinemaCon Mitch Neuhauser told Variety. “We will act accordingly because it’s the right thing to do. We want to do the safe, proper thing.”
Variety has numerous eye witnesses who said the individual who served Wilde the envelope was credentialed by CinemaCon.
According to Deadline, the envelope contained custody documents being served to Wilde on behalf of Jason Sudeikis.

The spirit of CinemaCon 2021 could be best summed up when its managing director this week took the stage at the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum wearing a “Son of the Pink Panther” T-shirt and a “Jurassic Park III” cap, memorabilia from movie theater trade shows from decades past. Heading into the opening remarks of CinemaCon on Tuesday morning, Illumination founder and CEO and Despicable Me franchise producer Chris Melendandri gave an impassioned speech about moviegoing and why the big screen is vital. Of course, any kind of day-and-date release puts exhibitors in competition with the studios’ streaming services, and no doubt there’s a loss of cash in the collapse of the theatrical and PVOD window.
However, the worst takeaway from dynamic windows is piracy, plain and simple.

When exhibitors and studio executives travel to Las Vegas later this month for CinemaCon, they’ll enter a state in which 19 percent of viral lab tests came back positive for Covid-19 last week — one of the highest in the nation, according to a report released Wednesday by the CDC, which also labeled Vegas’ Clark County a “sustained hotspot” for Covid.
The pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s CinemaCon in March 2020. As the Delta variant sees case numbers rise across the country, several studio executives told IndieWire that they and their colleagues don’t feel comfortable going and wish the National Association of Theatre Owners would cancel.
At the same time there’s little appetite at studios to back out, at least at this point; they respect NATO’s work and the pains that exhibitors have endured during the pandemic.
Last month, Disney decided not to send executives and talent to the convention.

It’s a requirement this year for all of those attending CinemaCon 2021 to be fully vaccinated against Covid. As such, we hear that the theatrical exhibition-Hollywood studio confab will go on from Aug. 23-26 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nv.
This despite news that Disney won’t be sending executives or stars to CinemaCon out of safety from the threat of the looming Delta variant.

CinemaCon has announced its 2021 festival for distributors and exhibitors will gather in August instead of the traditional date in the spring.
CinemaCon 2021 will now take place Aug. 23-26 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas after originally being scheduled for April 26. The change is due to uncertainty about international travel considerations and restrictions on large gatherings.
“With all the travel, logistical, and capacity concerns for the convention, our 7,500 attendees, vendors, and studio distribution partners, we couldn’t guarantee we could present the kind of show the industry expects in April,” the festival’s managing director Mitch Neuhauser said in a statement. “In close consultation with our studio and industry partners, we are rescheduling CinemaCon for August, when we think we can put on the kind of showcase we do best, and celebrate the moviegoing experience with the entire industry.”

CinemaCon, the movie theater exhibition industry’s annual trade show, has been rescheduled. The National Association of Theatre Owners, the organization behind the event, cited ongoing international travel restrictions and limits on large gatherings due to coronavirus as the reason behind the delay.
The yearly gathering of cinema lovers, which occurs at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, is usually held in late March. In 2021, CinemaCon will take place four months later than expected on Aug. 23-26.
