In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

It’s 2010, and Gemma Arterton is describing to Empire Magazine having spent an entire day shooting kidnap thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed in tears. “Your body’s not supposed to cry that much. It is exhausting.” Martin Compston, her co-star in the crying scene, agrees in earnest and the interviewer jokes off-camera, “So what you’re saying is: feel-good hit of the summer?”
Compston laughs, “Yeah, Disney Channel!” and Arterton repeats the gag, shaking her head at its ridiculousness “Disney Channel!”
13 years, a brand shift and a streaming revolution later, and Disney is now the UK home of The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Disney+ is also the UK home of writer-director J Blakeson’s latest collaboration with Arterton: TV thriller Culprits, which is out on Hulu in the US.
That eight-part series is the story of consequences catching up with the diverse crew who pulled off a mega-money heist years earlier.

Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
In the season’s first episode on New Year’s Day, Ghost was eliminated and was later revealed to be football star Chris Kamara.
Still, there’s a long season ahead, with plenty more costumes to be unmasked. Here’s a guide to the clues and guesses so far.
Who is Otter?
Otter first appeared in episode one with a passionate performance of Jimi Jamison’s “I’m Always Here” – also known as the Baywatch theme tune.

The Masked Singer UK is back for a fourth season, welcoming a new cast of 12 incognito celebrities.
On Sunday (1 January), the top-secret singing series, which sees a number of celebrities dressed in oversized costumes to hide their identity, returned to ITV.
During the opening episode, Cat and Mouse, a duo act, were among the first batch of competitors to perform for the judges by Irving Berlin.
Who are Cat and Mouse?
The clues revealed in the first episode included the number 200,000,000 written on a notepad.
Cat said he was “no stranger to legalities” and liked to “get to the bottom of cases”, as well as knowing “how to spin a tale”. The Vt also showed five different jars of spices lined up.
So far, fans have speculated that the duo could be Spice Girl Emma Bunton and partner Jade Jones. Others have their suspicions that the furry duo are married couple Shirlie and Martin Kemp.

The Rig is a brand new supernatural thriller series, directed by the legendary John Strickland, and is making its way to Prime Video on January 6th. While the show may be entrenched in mystery, and dark themes, our two interviews with leading cast-members were quite the opposite, as we had a lot of fun chatting about this brilliant new series with Martin Compston and Emily Hampshire, as well as Iain Glen and Rochenda Sandall.
Of course we speak about the themes of the show, and shooting in Scotland, as well as working with Strickland and the other members of this talented ensemble. But we also speak about cups of tea and battered chocolate bars. Martin Compston has addressed ongoing rumours about another series of Line of Duty.
Series six of Line of Duty came to an end in May 2021. While many have speculated that another series is in the pipeline, there has been no official confirmation so far.
Compston, who plays Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the hit BBC crime drama, was asked about the prospect of a seventh series during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Friday (30 December).
The Scottish actor said: “Look, nothing’s changed. I’m really chuffed, we’re really delighted people still want us back. That conversation, we had a really honest one [about] whether we were all up for doing it again, and I believe we all are.
“But unfortunately, at this point in time, there’s nothing immediate, there’s nothing coming very soon. I think we’d all like to at some point, it’s just all getting us together.

“The common mayfly has a life expectancy of just one day,” announced the voiceover in a memorable Vodafone advert from the early Noughties. “But is he miserable about it? Not one bit.” This insect’s life, repurposed as metaphor, has come to represent the flickering flame that is human existence. Life, getting shorter with every passing minute. It’s no surprise then that Scottish novelist Andrew O’Hagan used “mayflies” as the title of his 2020 novel about two friends working through a lifetime of memories as the light fades, a story that’s adapted this Christmas as a BBC One two-part special.
Martin Compston is Jimmy, a successful author returning to the Ayrshire of his youth at the behest of Tully (Tony Curran), his oldest friend who has incurable cancer. “I’m f***ed, Noodles,” he says, using Jimmy’s childhood nickname. “I’ve got four months and that’s the short of it.

This feature contains spoilers for all series of Line of Duty
If, like much of the UK, you are still nowhere near over that Line of Duty series six finale from May 2021, you might be wondering if that really was it for the nation’s favourite crime drama. Will there be a series seven of Line of Duty? This question is becoming as oft repeated as ‘just how many waistcoats does Steve Arnott own?’ and ‘Seriously – Buckells?!’
When asked about it, the show’s cast have been teasingly vague: back in August, Martin Compston said ‘there’s always a chance’ whereas in early October Adrian Dunbar went one step further, saying ‘Within the next few weeks or couple of months we might hear something.’ So far, so promising.
As of this week, however, series mastermind Jed Mercurio gave the latest official update as: ‘There’s no news.’ We won’t...

Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar has suggested that the next series could have as few as two episodes.
While there has so far been no official confirmation that the hit BBC police drama is returning for a seventh series, a renewel is widely expected.
Dunbar, who plays Ted Hastings in the hit BBC police drama, suggested that he, alongside co-stars Martin Compston and Vicky McClure, will find out later this month whether Line of Duty will indeed return.
Speaking to The Times, however, he claimed that he thought the prospective next season would contain fewer episodes than previously.
“There’s a big appetite for more Line of Duty,” he said. “It could be three or four episodes, I don’t think there’s going to be six for some reason.
“It might be two 90 minutes. But it’s all entirely down to [creator Jed Mercurio] what the storyline is going to be.

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2022, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv last week from the London Stadium, has raised a record-breaking £15,673,728 so far for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the care-free, play filled childhoods they are entitled to.
This record-breaking amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and The Power of Nutrition who have matched donations up to £4 million, meaning double the difference for children. This figure has smashed last year’s record total for money raised on the night.
The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out London Stadium with 54,410 fans in attendance, 10 years on from the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The match ended 4-1 on penalties to Soccer Aid World XI, taking them into the overall lead with 6-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match. The end of Peaky Blinders creates a difficult gap to fill. Until the feature film arrives to continue the Shelby family’s story, what other series combines its violent swagger and period style with spirits, ghosts and political history? It might be impossible to match the unique combination of larger-than-life characters and quotable dialogue in Steven Knight’s BBC gangster drama, but these recent British TV series will scratch some of that itch while each offering something unique of their own. Add your own recommendations below.
Gangs of London
Don’t be misled by the title, said our reviewer, this Sky Original is no clichéd cockney geezer-pleaser. It’s a stunning, complex drama with an excellent cast, thrilling action and ambitious scope, and one of the very best shows to come out of the UK in recent years. It’s also extremely violent, so those of a sensitive disposition, consider yourself warned.
