Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was one of the director’s more cerebral works, one that required some level of innovation when it came to the stuntwork. Nolan has been known to make films that routinely push the envelope in one manner or another, delivering a film that has a lot of heart with well-executed scenes, whether it be drama, action, tragedy, or comedy.
Robert Pattinson and John David Washington in Tenet
One of the most innovative scenes that were in Tenet was the reverse fight scene John David Washington participated. While it could have been the case that the director shot the scene the right way forward and then reversed it for the film, Nolan actually wanted the backward fight scene to be choreographed, which Washington revealed, was quite the challenge for the stunt workers, who had been in the film industry for quite some time.

Actor Denzel Washington and filmmaker Spike Lee have been known to work together on films like Malcolm X and Inside Man. Their frequent collaborations helped form a close bond between the two. But there’s another well-known actor who Lee feels he’s bonded with on a slightly similar level.

Washington and Lee have one of cinema’s most notable actor-director relationships. The pair first came together in the 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues. Lee immediately pictured Washington in the lead role of the film after seeing how women responded to the Oscar-winner.
“Before I wrote one word of Mo’ Better Blues, I knew I wanted Denzel Washington to play the lead,” Washington once told Entertainment Weekly. “In the fall of ’88, Denzel was starring on Broadway in Checkmates with Ruby Dee and Paul Winfield.

Actors in Tinseltown often take on roles that push them outside of their comfort zones. Few actors understand this better. Case in point: Denzel Washington, whose portrayal of American Muslim minister and civil rights leader in Malcolm X was filled with intense dedication—and, unexpectedly, tangible fear.
Before slipping into the character for Spike Lee’s Oscar-nominated masterpiece, Washington’s introduction to Malcolm X was somewhat limited, confined to his stage performance in When the Chickens Come Home to Roost. Learning more about Malcolm’s life’s complexities, the weight of the role grew apparent, leaving a lasting imprint on Washington’s psyche.

The actor, 69, appreciated for his dynamic performances, found himself in uncharted waters—it wasn’t just the challenge of embodying such a complex real-life character but also stepping onto a stage where politics could translate into a real threat to one’s safety.

Did Anna Wintour add more tables to this year’s Met Gala? Because the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art felt especially crowded on Monday evening, May 6, teeming with Hollywood A-listers wearing a plethora of artful looks. And while not everyone leaned into the evening’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” for the most part the stars acquitted themselves well in looks that ranged from quiet elegance to over the top and outrageous.
Even with the nature-centric theme, the night surprisingly was highlighted by some stars in neutrals. Nicole Kidman offered a great backstory for her black and white Balenciaga gown, while Cardi B served up the night’s best drama in a Windowsen black gown that almost spanned the width of the museum steps. Flesh-toned gowns likewise were abundant, including Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta and Lizzo in a custom floral-inspired corset gown by Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto.

Actor Denzel Washington starred as the titular character Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed biopic. The movie was one of the most important features in Washington’s career, and it also might’ve been one of the most intimidating.
Washington and Lee didn’t have the typical worries filming Malcolm X like underperforming or bad reviews. Instead, doing the feature would have them scared for their lives.

King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on Denzel Washington but he did have something on Ethan Hawke on Oscar night 2002, when Hawke lost Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable performance in Training Day. But without his co-star, Hawke might have been plenty more devastated than he was allowed to be.
Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? (via Variety), Ethan Hawke remembered that Denzel Washington had some sage wisdom after he lost to Iris’ Jim Broadbent. According to Hawke, Washington told him, “‘It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better…You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status.’ That’s the way he thinks…The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. Brad Pitt may have cemented his legacy of a legendary Hollywood actor back in the 1990s, but one of his outstanding roles could’ve never been his if it had been given to another actor as it’d been supposed to.
And the second candidate for the role wasn’t inferior at all — with all his experience with action films and thrillers, Denzel Washington could’ve also made a great fit.
While talking to Jamie Foxx on Grey Goose Vodka, the actor revealed that he had almost landed David Mills’ role in David Fincher’s crime thriller Seven that worthily holds the status of one of the best thrillers of the 1990s.
Washington went further with explaining the reasons for turning the script down — with the main one being that the story had seemed too demonic compared to what he would have chosen to do on the screen.

Denzel Washington is unarguably one of the best actors and personality as a whole that the entertainment industry could ever be gifted with. Not only is he one of the most respectable celebrities in all of Hollywood, he is also one of the most widely commended actors of all time. If anything, he doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind and act his heart out.

That being said, he also aimed to break one long-standing stereotype about him while working on his 2001 thriller-crime masterpiece with Ethan Hawke, Training Day. According to what Hawke shared during an interview, even when people tried to stop him, Washington stayed on his decision to prove that he could play a bad guy and still be a role model by “being great at my job.”

Ethan Hawke reveals what Denzel Washington said to him the night Hawke lost his ‘Training Day’ Oscar
The year was 2002 and Ethan Hawke was up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in “Training Day.” When Marcia Gay Harden read Jim Broadbent’s name, winning for “Iris,” Hawke’s co-star Denzel Washington whispered something in his ear.
It wasn’t “boom!” As Hawke revealed in a recent interview, Washington – who had already won an Oscar for “Glory” and would win a second that very night – said, “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
Hawke, who would go on to get three more Oscar nominations for acting (“Boyhood”) as well as screenwriting, expanded what Washington meant. “You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” he said. “That’s the way he thinks. That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple.

Ethan Hawke was nominated at the 2002 Oscars for best supporting actor for his performance in Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller “Training Day.” He lost the prize to Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), but he immediately got some much-needed perspective from his “Training Day” co-star Denzel Washington, who happened to win the Oscar that same night for best actor.
During a recent interview on Max’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” series, the host asked Hawke about a story he heard in which Washington leaned over to Hawke after the latter’s Oscar loss and whispered in his ear: “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status. That’s the way he thinks,” Hawke said about Washington’s advice in the moment on Oscars night. “That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth.

With things being so slow at the box office in the early going of 2024, you would half expect to hear people reporting sightings of tumbleweeds rolling across the floors of their local movie theaters. Praise to the cinema gods, May is finally arriving with a promising crop of tentpoles to help rejuvenate the marketplace, starting with director David Leitch's much-buzzed-about '80s series turned contemporary action-comedy "The Fall Guy" (you can read our own Jacob Hall's glowing review of the picture here). But never fear! If you're searching for something to watch at home, too, Netflix will provide in bountiful amounts.
Well, sort of.
Truth be told, next month is looking kind of sparse when it comes to Netflix exclusives outside the purview of shows with firmly established fandoms (see: the latest season of "Bridgerton") or the service's usual smattering of specialty offerings, including live comedy events and ongoing anime series.

In 2002, Training Day costars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke were Oscar-nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Washington won, Hawke did not, losing to Jim Broadbent for his role in Iris.
Hawke said Washington provided some sage advice after he lost.

Deemed one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, Denzel Washington exudes a classic movie star aura. DiCaprio and Washington have a few things in common beyond being praised for their craft. At one point, both actors were known for doing standalone films without doing too many sequels or franchises. They were also the two richest actors to have done so, with Washington right behind DiCaprio. When Screen Rant mentioned this to Washington himself, however, he seemed unimpressed by the stats.

Hollywood actress Kerry Washington, renowned for her portrayal of Broomhilda in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’, has opened up about the impact of sexual assault on her life.
The 47-year-old ‘Scandal’ star talked about the assault while addressing her September 2023 memoir, ‘Thicker Than Water’, at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books held at the University of Southern California, reports ‘People’ magazine.
In response to a question about how the abuse has influenced her, Washington told Erika D. Smith that it was one of the earliest instances in her life when someone denied the truth to her, causing her to doubt her intuition.

Based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, "The Equalizer" trilogy sees Denzel Washington playing a killing machine. Washington is Robert McCall, a former Marine and ex-Defense Intelligence Agency agent who would really like to be left alone. Unfortunately, scumbags and other villains frequently cross his path, which means McCall is often getting back into action and killing a lot of people.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the "Equalizer" trilogy is ultra-violent and action-packed. It's also surprisingly solid. These aren't great movies, but like Robert McCall, they get the job done in swift, brutal fashion. "The Equalizer 3" feels like an ending of sorts for Robert McCall, which makes for a sturdy trilogy. But how does the trilogy stack up as a whole? Which is the best entry? Which is the worst?
Let's find out by ranking "The Equalizer" movies!

Prime Video’s Fallout has been receiving largely positive reviews, along with critical praise for the performances in the series. Aaron Morten is one such face that the audience familiarized through the series. The actor plays the role of Maximus, an ally to Ella Purnell’s Lucy, in the series. Fans believe that Aaron Morten closely resembles disgraced actor Jonathan Majors and that he could replace Majors as the MCU’s Kang.
Aaron Morten in Prime Video’s Fallout
Disney fired Kang actor Majors following his guilty conviction on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Marvel is looking to recast the role, with Colman Domingo and Jon Boyega being some of the names thrown around for the role.

It was not the best time for Hollywood star Will Smith despite winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in his 2021 film, King Richard. The celebration of his Oscar win was sidelined by his behavior as he slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

As Rock attempted to lighten the event with laughter, he made a joke directed at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith while introducing the nominees for Best Documentary at the Oscars. Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes in response to the joke. Smith found it funny at first as he was seen laughing at the joke, but after seeing his wife’s response, the actor could not hold back and rushed to the stage and slapped Rock.

Amazon’s Fallout series led by the trio of Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten turned out to be a delightful adaptation of the popular video game series. The show managed to capture the essence and environment of the games whir telling a wholly original story set in the mythos of the franchise.

Nicole Renard, the 28-year-old social media chef from Kennewick, Washington was eliminated in seventh place on Thursday’s episode of “Next Level Chef.” The former Miss Washington from Team Richard Blais struggled in the Bento Box challenge, admitting Japanese cuisine is not her strong suit. She landed in the elimination round against Izahya Thomas and Gabi Chappel, both from Team Gordon Ramsay. Watch her exclusive video interview with Gold Derby above.
“I’ve never made a bento box,” Nicole admits. “And to do three different components in 30 minutes essentially gave us all 10 minutes for each. That’s less time than we’ve had for any challenge. I was definitely overwhelmed. I’m not familiar with Japanese cuisine. I’ve never cooked it. I don’t eat it a lot, so heading back down into the basement I definitely felt in over my head.”

Ridley Scott is all set to take us back to Ancient Rome with his upcoming Gladiator 2. The previous installment was critically and commercially successful with 5 Oscars including Best Picture and Actor. New details from the upcoming project have been recently revealed at the CinemaCon 2024 and surprisingly, the fans are not very convinced about it.
Russell Crowe played Maximus in Gladiator
Gladiator is one of the most significant films in Ridley Scott’s career. The film boasted some iconic performances from Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and others. The sequel is set to present a new cast including Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn. However, the plot details of the sequel suggest that it may be a cash grab rather than an honest continuation.

A lively CinemaCon presentation closed out with spectacular first footage from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II as studio top brass mostly put speculation of mergers and acquisitions behind them to focus on a rich upcoming slate.
Yet there was scarcely a mention of Mission: Impossible 8, the next instalment in the spy action franchise from Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie due out on May 23, 2025. There was no recorded segment of Cruise dangling from the International Space Station announcing the new title, and no sneak peaks.

It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

Paul Mescal is the face of the new Roman Empire.
The Oscar-nominated actor leads Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2,” the sequel to the Academy Award-winning 2000 film, alongside an impressive cast that includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen reprising her role from the original film.
The footage screened at CinemaCon on Thursday was still unfinished, but Paramount debuted five minutes from the film. In it Mescal, who plays the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the original film, is again a slave fighting in games inside the Colosseum. Quinn is the new Caesar deciding the fate of the warriors with a turn of his thumb, Pascal is a general who is being honored with a series of games, and Washington’s character is mysterious, working from behind the scenes to control the power dynamics of ancient Rome.

Gladiator 2 swept into the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where theater owners were given the first look at footage from Ridley Scott’s epic.
Scott sent in a video from London to introduce the piece. “It is possibly even more extraordinary than the first,” said Scott of the upcoming film, a sequel to 2000’s Gladiator. Star Paul Mescal called working on it a “standout moment” in his life to date. Denzel Washington said the film will have “emotion” and “spectacle ” beyond anything else in theaters this year.
In the footage, Mescal is revealed to be a gladiator (apparently, he is not playing the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus, as had been reported). His character is seen fighting murderous monkeys, as well as a soldier on a rhinoceros. At one point, the Colosseum is filled with water for an epic ship battle.

There was something fitting about the setting.
Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer from “Gladiator II” on the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, a Las Vegas hotel that reimagines Ancient Rome in all its decadent splendor, albeit with a few more slot machines. Director Ridley Scott seems to be offering a bloodier version of that distant age, one that finds Paul Mescal entering the arena as a nobleman who has renounced his privilege and finds himself in a life-and-death struggle for the amusement of the Roman people.
Based on the footage that Scott brought to Sin City to share with cinema owners, “Gladiator 2” recaptures the first film’s epic sprawl and shattering action sequences. The teaser saw Mescal face off against a charging rhino, a horde of vicious baboons, and Pedro Pascal, among other threats to his chiseled physique. There were also naval bombardments, political intrigue aplenty...

Refresh for More…Paramount ended their CinemaCon 2024 on an epic note, that being Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II. The logo was unveiled and title made official today at the Las Vegas studio exhibitor confab.
Raised stakes here: Rhinos, man-eating monkeys, battling boats in the Colosseum and a very quotable, wise, fierce Roman statesman played by Denzel Washington — he’s not an Emperor. Not only does Paramount have a Thanksgiving tentpole locked up here in the sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning Best Picture, but — wow — they clearly have another awards contender on their hands.
“It’s more extraordinary than the first” beamed Scott in pre-roll footage which also included stars Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Paul Mescal.
First shot in the trailer is a glimpse of hands sifting through rice, and echo of the famous shot of Maximus’ hand skimming over the top of a waving field of wheat in the original film.

Announced in February, Lee’s High and Low is an English-language remake of Akria Kurosawa’s 1963 original, which itself was a loose adaptation of Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, and is set to star Denzel Washington and feature Jeffery Wright. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, with 2006’s Inside Man being their most recent meeting. A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures are developing and producing the project, while Lee and Alan Fox penned the script.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” Much of Tony Scott’s 1995 thriller Crimson Tide takes place aboard a submarine, with the conflict coming from the two main characters — played by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman — at odds over their interpretations of a missile launch order. Because of the close quarters of the sub, Washington told us at the time of the release that at times, it almost felt like doing a stage play with Hackman, rather than a film. Gladiators, suit up: The “Scandal” rewatch podcast, “Unpacking the Toolbox,” is set to return with new episodes on April 11.
“Unpacking the Toolbox” is hosted by former “Scandal” stars Katie Lowes (who played Quinn) and Guillermo Díaz (who played Huck) — their Irl friendship was forged on set, and fans nicknamed their twisted on-screen partnership Huckleberry Quinn.
Part of the iHeartPodcasts network, the Shondaland Audio series “Unpacking the Toolbox” — a reference to Huck’s torture kit — hit pause during the SAG-AFTRA strike, having covered the first two seasons of Shonda Rhimes’ ABC drama, which ran for seven seasons from 2012 through 2018.
“Scandal” revolved around Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, a D.C. fixer who also happened to be having an affair with the very married President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). The series was a slow burn for ABC, ratings-wise, but midway through its second season, its delightfully batshit plotting and wild weekly cliffhangers caught on with audiences,...

Kamasi Washington has recruited André 3000 for “Dream State,” the latest offering from the musician’s forthcoming album Fearless Movement.
Across a hypnotic eight minutes, Washington’s saxophone and André 3000’s flute interweave and enchant. As the song’s title suggests, there’s a dream-like trance that envelops the song, but it becomes much more active and vibrant when Kamasi Washington’s rhythm section enter. “Dream State” is more meditative than previous Fearless Movement cut “Prologue,” but it still features some dazzling, stirring moments of improvisation.

Of the song and the collaboration, Kamasi Washington wrote in a statement that the song “is a celebration of life and the opportunity it gives us to explore new possibilities. We created this song together instantaneously as we improvised off the music we made in the moment. It was such an honor to work on this song with one of my heroes,...

Actors Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds collaborated for the 2012 feature Safe House for the first time. The film saw Washington in the rare role as a villain, whose character would undergo a torturous interrogation process by the government.
Although Washington could’ve used a stunt double for the dangerous scene, he wanted to experience the feeling of being tortured firsthand.

Washington mostly preferred to do his own stunts in his films. This was the case in Safe House, an action thriller that required Washington to be in decent shape. Since he couldn’t rely solely on stunt doubles, Washington and his co-star Ryan Reynolds worked with professionals to physically prepare for their roles. In a resurfaced interview with Black Film, Washington asserted that he also had time on his side while training for the feature.
