"Coherence" is one of the best sci-fi thrillers there is -- the type of movie that breaks your brain in the best possible way. It's a mind-bending movie that tells a grand scale story in a small scale setting, but without the need for diagrams to explain its plot à la "Primer." In this regard, it's the more accessible version of that cult classic.
In a nutshell, "Coherence" is the kind of low-budget indie genre movie that tells a simple story and leaves an impact, with its filmmakers going on to make bigger-budget movies. It is not, however, the kind of film that seems designed to spawn a franchise. Yet, somehow, more than a decade after its release, it appears director James Ward Byrkit is developing a sequel — and he's recruited producer Kate Andrews from the spectacularly twisted "It's What's Inside" to join the project.

Do you know what’s real? Do you know who to trust? Director James Ward Byrkit’s sci-fi thriller Coherence was released back in 2013, and a follow-up movie is on the way.
Deadline reports that James Ward Byrkit and producer Kate Andrews (It’s What’s Inside) are developing “a feature follow-up to Coherence,” with Byrkit returning to write and direct.
Deadline notes in today’s exclusive report, “Plot details are being kept under lock and key — including whether the new film will be a prequel, sequel, or a different story entirely.”
James Ward Byrkit will write the screenplay alongside Alex Manugian.
He tells Deadline, “I’ve been inundated with pitches for sequels and offers for remakes ever since the film came out but nothing ever inspired us until Kate Andrews sent me an email with two words that unlocked the box. So either Kate’s a genius or she...

Exclusive: Director James Ward Byrkit and producer Kate Andrews (It’s What’s Inside) are developing a feature follow-up to Coherence, the sci-fi thriller co-written, directed and executive produced by Byrkit, which has garnered a cult following since its release to critical acclaim in 2013.
Plot details are being kept under lock and key — including whether the new film will be a prequel, sequel, or a different story entirely. Byrkit will be at the helm as director and will also pen the script with his co-story writing partner Alex Manugian from the original film. Andrews will produce under her Boldly Go Productions following the sale of her first film It’s What’s Inside to Netflix for a festival high $17 million at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, on which we were first to report.

The other night, I had a hankering to watch a good high-concept movie I'd never seen before. I saw 2014's "Coherence" on a few lists, and being almost wholly unfamiliar with it, I decided to fire it up and give it a shot. Thankfully, this film gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and eventual "Hustlers" director Lorene Scafaria star in this ultra-low budget brain melter about a group of friends gathering for a dinner party while a comet passes by overhead. When the power goes out, a couple of them trek up the street to a neighboring house with the lights on -- only to discover something that shakes them to their core. I won't get into the specifics here, but the film has an incredible conceit, and director James Ward Byrkit, who shot...

James Ward Byrkit's "Coherence" is the kind of sci-fi psychological thriller that leaves audiences with more questions than answers by the time the film ends. Shot on a shoestring budget and with actors who are close friends with Byrkit, 'Coherence" starts with the simple premise of eight friends having dinner together on the night of a comet passing. While audiences are treated to some staple tropes associated with the sci-fi genre, "Coherence" remains unpredictable right until the end. As the narrative essentially deals with alternate dimensions created by a rip in space-time, one would assume that the actors were thoroughly aware of their complex character arcs as the film progresses. However, this was not the case.
In an interview with Yahoo Movies in 2014, Byrkit delved into some of the theories posited to explain the complicated turn of events in "Coherence," and how the actors were as much in...

Though "Coherence" sounds like the title of a movie about achieving clarity or unity of some sort, viewers of James Ward Byrkit's 2013 directorial debut may have found the film's increasingly complex sci-fi plot anything but clear. The title refers to the concept of quantum decoherence, which is mentioned in the movie as the main character, Em (Emily Baldoni), reads from a book on physics. "Quantum decoherence," the book says, "assures that no possibilities have interaction with one another."
This is the opposite of what we see happening in "Coherence" as Em and seven other guests at a dinner party find themselves interacting with other possible versions of themselves from a seemingly infinite web of alternate realities. The movie is a mind-bender, and of course, quantum physics is heady stuff, but according to Byrkit, the idea for "Coherence" was born from a desire to scale back what he was doing...

Dance and work your cares away when “Fraggle Rock” returns to HBO in HD. Almost 30 years since it finished its run in 1987, the classic muppet TV series, created by Jim Henson, is making its way back to the cable network channel. Per Deadline, the new digitally remastered version will air at the end year on HBO, HBO Go, and HBO Now.
“In remastering the series, illuminate has created a contemporary look for the series with meticulous attention paid to every detail — sharpening the images, cleaning up the contrast, increasing the vibrancy of the colors and re-formatting for wide-screen — all under the careful supervision of Brian Henson,” said Richard Goldsmith, executive vice president of global distribution for the Jim Henson Co. in a press release.

Coherence centres on eight friends enjoying a very grown up, suburban dinner party. A comet is passing by Earth and changes to the atmosphere are making some of them jumpy and uncomfortable. An unexplainable shattered iPhone screen is an early warning sign that something unusual is coming their way. During what seems like the longest night, their real lives, jarred by this astronomical anomaly, are confronted with multiple, alternative realities of themselves.
Their problems start with a power cut and the intriguing sight of just one house in the entire neighbourhood that still has its lights on. Two of the dinner party go and investigate. When they return one has a cut on his head and doesn’t want to talk about what he’s seen.

From D Films, Sneak Peek director/cinematogapher James Ward Byrkit's impressive, "Twilight Zone"-inspired debut science fiction thriller "Coherence", now available on DVD/VOD/Est:
"Coherence" is based on 'quantum mechanics', referring to a quantum state, where different versions of reality can still interchange with each other.
Director Byrkit did have a specific idea for the film, but cast improvisational actors, giving them the basic outline of their characters, motivations and major plot points:
"...'Emily' (Baldoni) and her boyfriend 'Kevin' (Maury Sterling) are two of several people attending a dinner party at the house of 'Mike' (Nicholas Brendon).
"Kevin's ex-girlfriend' 'Laurie' (Lauren Maher) will be there, making things tense for both Kevin and Emily.
"The dinner party goes fairly well until the power goes out following a comet sighting. They discover that a house down the road still has power and a few of them decide to investigate.

Schrodinger's cat is an imaginary illustration of a paradox: "When does a quantum system stop existing as a superposition of states and become one or the other?" Writer/director James Ward Byrkit explores this thought experiment and various results in his first feature, Coherence, which adds a new dimension to the typical dinner party film.
Coherence evolves at an intimate dinner gathering of four couples: former dancer Em (Emily Baldoni) and Kevin (Maury Sterling), former Roswell actor Mike (Nicholas Brendon) and his introverted wife Lee (Lorene Scafaria), older couple Hugh (Hugo Armstrong) and Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), and Amir (Alex Manugian) who brings his new girlfriend Laurie (Lauren Maher).
It's quickly revealed that Laurie has an intimate history with Kevin, which leads to awkward moments, but Em is more concerned about something she's heard -- the astronomic event of a lifetime taking place that same night. Miller's Comet is due to pass near Earth,...

One of the surprise treats of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is low-key sci-fi thriller, Coherence: the sort of film where walking in with no expectations is the best way to approach things (but please do keep reading this review).
James Ward Byrkit‘s feature follows a group of old friends whose dinner party is cut short by a power outage, thought to have been caused by the passing of a comet that night. Part of the group ventures across the street to the one remaining house with power where they discover the full psychological horror of their predicament.
Due to the unexpected narrative direction of Brykit’s screenplay it would be unfair to go into the detail...

Like the better episodes of The Twilight Zone, Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Shane Carruth’s Primer before it, indie sci-fi Coherence is a brilliantly staged and sharply written mindscrew of a movie that left me equal parts giddy, chilled and bewildered. It’s easily one of the most thought-provoking and deeply engrossing cinematic experiences of the year – not to mention a highly auspicious debut for writer-director James Ward Byrkit.
It’s hard to talk about Coherence without spoiling its many fascinating twists and turns, but I’ll do my best. Our protagonists are eight friends who come together for a dinner party on the night of an astronomical anomaly – “Miller’s Comet,” which is passing closer to Earth than ones recorded in the past. As Coherence opens, hints of the comet’s influence can be seen in broken phone screens and disrupted signals.

An approaching comet, a cracked cell phone, and a dinner party are the building blocks upon which Coherence is constructed. Very soon, however, Schrödinger's cat, intermittent power outages, and fractured personalities are poured into the mix, followed by a sweet, sweet topping consisting almost entirely of brain-teasing puzzles and head-shaking twists. It is possible to be a bit too clever for your own good. Directed by James Ward Byrkit, who wrote the screenplay based on a story that he and Alex Manugian devised, Coherence brings together four couples in a house, with only occasional forays into the outside world. Time Crimes: Byrkit’s Exercise Somewhat Overbaked by Inchoate Ideas
Fans of Shane Carruth’s blend of intelligent and hyper complicated low-fi sci-fi should certainly be interested in James Ward Byrkit’s debut, Coherence, a concept that is, of course, facetious at best in this mind-bending puzzle. Playing like the relationship issue version of Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, the initial set-up reaches dizzying heights of possibility and discussion worthy instances. Inevitably, however, the narrative is constricted by its own structure of multiplied repetitions, which are necessary for intricate developments even as they tend to become an impediment to continued investment.
During the evening when a comet speeds notably close to Earth, several old friends converge at a dinner party. Seven of them are friends, while one of them, Amir (Alex Manugian) is bringing a new girlfriend, Laurie (Lauren Maher), who used to date Kevin (Maury Sterling). Kevin is now in...

A full trailer has been released for a solid-looking psychological thriller called Coherence. It was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, and the story follows the events of a night when an “astrological anomaly” affects life on Earth. I enjoy watching movies that are supposed to mess with your head like this.
On the night of an astrological anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, Coherence is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.
The movie stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and Lorene Scafaria. It's set to be released in theaters and VOD on June 20th. I'll definitely be checking this one out.

One of the more intriguing thrillers I saw out of Fantastic Fest last year was Coherence. It's more sci-fi in nature, but it has the pulse of a sinister Twilight Zone episode that I think horror fans will enjoy. A trailer has hit in anticipation of a limited theatrical run/VOD debut on June 20th. Coherence was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, and it stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian (who also conceived of the story), Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong and Lorene Scafaria.

(It's a great way to maximize what one imagines to be a relatively small budget, yet the film never feels confining, thanks in no small measure...

Last we heard, Fraggle Rock was looking to make its triumphant return to pop culture via a big-screen movie a la The Muppets, with New Regency hiring Rango cowriter Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian to write a new script. However, before that happens, it looks like Jim Henson's Fraggles -- originally a television series on an early version of HBO here in the states way back in the '80s -- are inching their way back into the mainstream through other channels, like in this Ben Folds Five music video. Like the Fraggles, Ben Folds Five are also reuniting, launching a new album (The Sound of the Life of the Mind), with this video debuting the first single off said album, "Do It Anyway". Phil Hodges directs the video, which finds the main Fraggles (including Uncle...

There have been talks, for quite a while, about a Fraggle Rock movie. Now it looks like they are going to get the ball rolling on this project.
THR just announced that Jim Byrkit(co-writer of Rango) and Alex Manugian have been hired to write the script for the movie version of the much loved Jim Hensen TV show. For those of you that were not able to watch the original show, here is a little synopsis of what you are missing:
Initially a Canadian series that became a hit internationally (in the U.S. it played on HBO), Rock told the adventures of a group of cave-dwelling puppet creatures called Fraggles. In their lives are a race of small industrious creatures named Doozers, who live in the caves, and the Gorgs, furry giants who look at Fraggles as nuisances.

This is probably much more exciting to me than it is to most people, but the Fraggle Rock movie is actually happening. Jim Byrkit, co-writer on Rango, is teaming up with Alex Manugian, a voice actor, to bring the Fraggles to life, with Henson supervising. I have such fond memories of Fraggle Rock.
I'm becoming concerned about all the humans acting like zombies lately. The face eating in Miami, then a man barricaded in his home cut open his stomach and tossed his intestines at police when they stormed the property. Then a man in Baltimore ate a guy's brain and heart and hid the rest of the body in the basement. Should I be concerned?
I know that snicks brought up the inevitable One Million Moms protest of the gay Father's Day ad by Jc Penney. But I'd like to focus on one segment of their outrage for a minute.

Dance your cares away, because there’s great news on the horizon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rango co-writer Jim Byrkit and actor Alex Manugian have signed on to write the script for the Fraggle Rock movie. So, yes, two men involved in making a weird, wonderful movie are on board to help make a potentially weird, wonderful movie. Some crazed, colorful cave-dwellers, dangerous monsters on the surface, and a talking pile of trash. It almost makes you wonder where our H. R. Pufnstuf movie is. Of course, Jim Henson‘s name and the resurgence of The Muppets can’t hurt. Nevertheless, this is happening:...

'Rango' Collaborators Jim Byrkit & Alex Manugian Hired To Write Long-Developing 'Fraggle Rock' Movie
After years spent in development purgatory (everyone from Ahmet Zappa to "Hoodwinked" writer/director Cory Edwards have worked on the project, from as far back as 2006), it finally looks like the "Fraggle Rock" movie, based on the beloved Jim Henson series, will make it to the big screen. Last year New Regency got the project going again, and just yesterday the Hollywood Reporter revealed that a pair of screenwriters have been secured – Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian, who both worked on last year's Oscar-winning animated western "Rango."
Byrkit received a story credit on "Rango," alongside director Gore Verbinski and credited writer John Logan (he also worked as a storyboard artist for the film). In fact, Byrkit has done design work for Verbinski on all three of the filmmaker's 'Pirates of the Carribean' movies (and provided illustrations for Verbinski's big screen debut, "Mousehunt"). This year, he also wrote and directed an...

Down on Fraggle Rock, there have been plenty of fits and starts about the movie version of "Fraggle Rock."
First announced back in September of 2005, a feature film version of "Fraggle Rock" -- the cult children's television series created by Jim Henson that ran from 1983 to 1987 -- was supposed to hit theaters in 2009. As you'll notice, that never happened, but not for a lack of trying.
Ahmet Zappa was hired in 2006 to write the script for the "Fraggle Rock" movie, which would have been a musical. In 2008, The Weinstein Company picked up the rights to "Fraggle Rock" and hired Cory Edwards to write it as a feature-length musical. In 2011, New Regency picked up the rights from The Weinstein Company with the hopes of bringing the felt creatures the big screen. Now, finally, that version of "Fraggle Rock" has a writing team: Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian, who co-wrote "Rango" together.

Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian are set to script New Regency's big screen version of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . The original series, which premiered on HBO in 1983, featured a world populated by a mix of human characters and Fraggle Rock puppets. Initial plans for the movie had the core characters Gogo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red leaving their home in Fraggle Rock and interacting with humans. Update: Two years have passed and things are completely different for the Fraggle Rock movie. It's now at a different studio, New Regency. They've hired writer Jim Byrkit and voice over artist Alex Manugian, both from Rango, to write the script. They wrote the upcoming Disney movie Fleeced. The Jim Henson Co. and Montecito Picture Co. are making the movie.

Riding those sweet, sweet Muppets waves, a Fraggle Rock film is starting to materialize over at New Regency. Jim Byrkit, a co-writer on Rango, and Alex Manugian, a voice actor from the same film, have been tapped as the writing team. Go ahead and listen to the theme song and preemptively mourn the days when your Fraggle Rock references were at least mildly obscure.

Now that The Muppets proved to be both a big success and worthy of the sequel treatment, other studios have finally started moving on their own Jim Henson-based projects — as small as that number may actually be. Thus, seven months after the rights were picked up by New Regency, it’s been announced that James Byrkit (Rango) and Alex Manugian (a voice in Rango) are getting underway on the screenplay for a Fraggle Rock film set up at New Regency; The Jim Henson Company and Montecito Pictures are producing. Despite much ballyhooing about its return back in 2006 and then 2008, forward movement on a film adaptation of one of Muppet man Jim Henson’s other creations, Fraggle Rock, hasn’t exactly been smooth. But New Regency is trying to keep the momentum going, hiring Jim Bykrit and Alex Manugian to channel their inner Doozer and build the latest draft of the script. The Fraggles, as you’ll likely know, are the cave-dwelling fuzz balls that live beneath a lighthouse* and spend their days largely having fun. When, that is, they’re not annoying the workaholic Doozers by snacking on their carefully constructed buildings. Then there are the Gorgs, the furry giants who treat our small heroes as pests. The TV version routinely found hero Gobo receiving postcards from his Uncle Matt, who was exploring “outer space” (our world). To collect his messages, the Fraggles ran the gamut of eager lighthouse keeper’s dog Sprocket.

With humor as dry as its dusty landscape and a sprawling blend of classic cinematic references, Gore Verbinski’s Rango is an animated film for movie lovers who don’t mind getting their adventuresome fix and consistent laughs from a misfit pack of talking varmints and one unforgettable reptile.
At first, the klutzy, crooked-necked pet chameleon entertains himself with imaginative one-act plays and starves for friendly interaction. But when a car accident leaves the lonely lizard stranded in the desert, he saunters into the forsaken town of Dirt where, using his honed knack for improvisation, he assumes the name Rango and a heroic persona to match.
Voiced by Johnny Depp and infused with his comic timing, Rango’s exaggerated movements mimic Depp’s eccentric style, an endearing blend of natural charisma, offbeat silliness, and freakish sensibility.
